What a fantastic book to use with / alongside children to teach them all the basic skills they need to be able to cook a range of simple, yet tasty, meals in the kitchen. It has very clear, simple and child-friendly photographs to help guide the child step by step through each dish. This treasure of a book will help build a child’s confidence in the kitchen, giving them a love for healthy cooking and eating habits early on. The added sections about nutrition, budgeting, planning, and rules are a real bonus too.

Thank you to Storey Publishing and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review.

My 4.5 year old and I spent a day perusing this cookbook! While it was meant for older children, she absolutely loved the step-by-step pictures and the empowerment of kids cooking dinner for the whole family. We made the Cheesy Bean Quesadillas, the Hearty Grilled Cheese (SO GOOD! We used cheddar and sourdough bread), Pizza Night! (and everyone chose their own toppings), and the Popcorn Chicken (less of a success). My husband and I want to try a few of the Asian-inspired dishes and will enlist the girls (4.5 and 2), to help with the stirring and prepping.

As mentioned above, the step-by-step photographs set this apart. Even as an adult, pictures of recipes help us know if we are doing things right, and seeing the kids performing each step was awesome. I also loved the safety steps and guides for basic prepping, like how to grate ginger, boil an egg, chop an onion, and wash lettuce and herbs. I wish we had this in hardback already!

Kids Cook Dinner by Deanna F. Cook the 25 easy to cook recipes is an ideal way to get your kids, grandkids or nieces or nephews to help cook dinner by themselves or with you. Beautiful step-by-step instructions which are very easy and simple to follow. Each recipe encourages the children to learn with or without any help. A great way to include, encourage kids to cook and taste new things. Recommended for children aged between 8 and 12, I think it’s really ideal for any age.

The author has a list of simple things that kids can do to make cooking easier - such as washing their hands, getting out materials and preparing ingredients that will make it easier to cook.
The terms chop and dice are explained, along with how to mince garlic and peel fruits and vegetables. The terms mix, stir fry, bake and boil are also explained and there are pictures that help to show what the terms mean.
The measuring terms liquid and dry measure are explained, along with safety measures for using knives, stovetops and ovens.
An interesting footnote - there are directions on how to read an ingredient list on a can, emphasizing that sugar is also corn syrup, and that there is less sugar in a product if sugar is at the end of a list of ingredients and more sugar if it is at the beginning.
Bean and cheese quesadillas are the first recipe with only a few ingredients, they are fried in a pan and they are easy for a child to make.
A salad using feta cheese, olives, cucumber, lettuce and tomatoes is next, it even includes a dressing recipe with olive oil, lemon juice, oregano and salt that is easy to make. This recipe is a little harder than the quesadilla recipe.
Kids can cook veggies 3 ways - by roasting them, boiling them and microwaving, the roasting is the most involved as it requires chopping and using the oven while the microwaving is the easiest.
There is a recipe for tabbouleh that requires measuring, dicing and straining and an easy recipe for pita chips to go along with it.
There are some fun pasta recipes that may require adult assistance, and a fun pizza recipe that requires making homemade pizza dough and measuring toppings and cheese.
Your child will enjoy making chicken nuggets and shakshuka for dinner with adult supervision !
Enjoy!

In my house, my grandkids (7y/o & 8y/o) tend to play a lot of ‘What do you want for dinner?’ games. Then I spotted Kids Cook Dinner: 23 Healthy, Budget-Friendly Meals from the Best-Selling Cooking Class Series and I knew it was the time to turn the tables on them to sort out dinner…with supervision of course! Together we sat down, looked at all the directions and pictures, and tried out a few dishes.

And the boys loved it! It really spoke to them at a level they can understand about prep work, safety, cooking methods, and what it really takes to create a meal. It’s quite the Home Economics 101 for grade schoolers. The recipes have nice step by step directions that they could follow easily enough with quite a variety of dishes that even these picky eaters enjoyed. Some of their favorites were Popcorn Chicken, Nutty Noodles, Fried Rice, Hearty Grill Cheese, and their ultimate favorite - Pizza from scratch!

This really was a wonderful cookbook for kids. It certainly has inspired my two to get into the kitchen and get involved with making meals. The smiles on their faces when they served Mom and Dad were total worth it. This would make a great gift for an aspiring chef. I heartly recommend it.

Great cookbook which covers everything children need to know about preparing a meal, including budgeting, meal planning and nutritional content. Lots of colourful photography with step by step instructions

Kids Cook Dinner is full of solid basics for teaching children about cooking and basic basics, from start-to-finish, as well as other responsible inclusions, such as teaching the concept of calculating meal cost or how to read a nutritional label. The recipes are easy enough to set up a child's success, and are (mostly) healthy as well as tasty. My one critique would be lack of inclusion for dietary restrictions (something that has bothered my own child in the past when borrowing kids' cookbooks). It would've been easy--and much appreciated--to add notes on recipes or an addendum at the end of the book to suggest how to change out ingredients to accommodate gluten free or dairy free or soy free diets.

Super well done book for kids. The recipes are simple yet they cover a diverse range of flavors which you don’t often see in kids cooking. I would say if your child has shown interest in cooking this one needs to be on your shelf.

Kids Cook Dinner
23 Healthy, Budget-Friendly Meals from the Best-Selling Cooking Class Series
by Deanna F. Cook

I received a digital arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fantastic book. I am a mom to 5 and 8 year old boys who are constantly eating. I’m the daughter of a home economics teacher and in a previous career taught inner city tweens how to make nutritious snacks.

I love how everything is broken down into steps. The steps are illustrated with real kids doing the tasks. Nutrition, safety and budget are all taken into account. The recipes start out relatively easy and familiar and then expand to grow with the child as they grow in confidence and in an expanding dietary palate. Common knowledge is to involve kids in the cooking to get them more interested in eating the food. This is a fun and interactive way for them to build real world life skills and to want to try new foods through the challenge of continuing their adventures in cooking. This would make an exceptional book for home schoolers, libraries and anyone hoping to branch out from chicken nuggets and hotdogs but unsure how.

This was such a cute cookbook. I really liked it! It used simple language and lots of pictures that kids would be easy for a child to follow and understand. The recipes were also simple but healthy and diverse. It explained different cooking terms and gave measurement conversions. This would be a great book for a beginner cook.

Really good book, lots of children friendly recipes here that aren't the usual fish fingers or other bland meals, encouraging kids to get hands on in the kitchen, always top in my book. The recipes are tailored to children with all the appropriate language designed to really talk to children and laid out in a way that makes it easy for them to categorise what ingredients are required.

A fab at encouraging kids to cook, would purchase this for the little one's book shelf as I feel it's great encouragement and helps with trying new foods if they've had some hand in making and exploring food positively,

The beginning of the book impressed me quite a bit, explaining about meal costs and labels on food etc, the pictures were also very good and high quality, I for one, certainly recommend this book to any parent, school or educator!

With thanks to Netgalley for the free ARC in return for my review.

Well, this book was a delight to work through! My 7 year old daughter and I read this together and I was really impressed with both the amount of content and suitability for children.

Kids Cook Dinner is a beautifully bright book and it will certainly attract childrens' attention. It doesn't just include a lovely selection of recipes but also shares important information such as how to read nutritional labels, how to budget for meals and kitchen safety. It is full of pictures of children cooking and I love that it has a picture, as well as instructions, for every single step.

My only criticism would be that there are quite a few 'salad' recipes and, whilst they look lovely, they aren't something that would appeal to my children. It would be nice if a few desserts could have been added as I think kids would love this.

Finally, at the back there is space to write your shopping list and plan your meals for the week. An excellent skill for children to learn, because I still struggle with this as an adult!

As a parent, I think this book is excellent and it lovely to have my children excited about cooking dinner for us.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC in return for an honest review.

This is a fantastic book to get the kids cooking!
Filled with easy to follow, accessible recipes to get a quick start in cooking, this book also features something many other kids cook books omit: the kitchen basics such as how to chop an onion, or press garlic or grate cheese or wash salad. Basics that we, as adults know, but forget to teach the kids. There;s also a an excellent section about budgeting, nutrition, and meal planning, too
The recipes are simple ones, but easy to follow for the kids, and include a diverse range of cuisines. Most recipes stay on a singe two-page spread, so they're not overwhelming, and they all include full colour photographs of kids actually cooking.
This book is aimed at older primary - 5th/6th grade, although younger kids will be able to follow along as well, with assistance.

I'll be buying a copy of this one for my kids!

~Many thanks to NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~

My thanks to #NetGalley and #StoreyPublishing for the advance copy eBook in exchange for an honest review. I loved this cookbook. I will buy it in hardcopy. It’s got a nice variety of recipes, more on that in a sec, but more compelling than the easy-to-follow recipes is the informational lessons. There is info on calculating the cost of a meal, money saving tips on shopping, the healthy composition of the plate, how to read a nutrition label, and a series of skills. The skills include kitchen rules, prep, measuring, conversion and equivalents. This is basically everything an adult needs, but in kid version. It’s a wonderful early learning, skill building book. Then the recipes. The recipes #DeannaFCook chose include budget friendly healthy vegetarian options, and only a modicum of meat. Exactly what I would be looking for in a cookbook! Everything is kid-friendly, but not patronizing: it goes beyond PB&J to stretch the palate and encourage creativity. A great cookbook.

Such a fun cookbook. This one is unique because it has tutorials for different types of things that will need to be done in the kitchen. Chopping, washing fresh food, simmering and boiling. It is such a great start to a child's education in the kitchen. And the recipes are all simple and delicious. A perfect first cookbook for any beginner chef!

Wow! Wish I had a cookbook like this when I was a kid!! The variety of foods. How to use different utensils and pans, especially a wok, is awesome. The pictures accompanying the recipes are fabulous. And with the varying recipes, kids are bound to find a recipe or two to try. Parents will breathe easy knowing their kids understand what they are doing when following the guidelines for safety, which are extremely important. This cookbook would be a good reference for anyone starting out cooking.
