I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Now my love for Pride and Prejudice grows stronger each and every year. I adore reading the book whenever I cross paths with it. As well as watching the movies from time to time. Seriously, anything related to Pride and Prejudice makes me heart very happy.

Honestly, I'm not sure how many retellings I've read that are about Pride and Prejudice. I don't think I will ever keep track of it either. Mostly because they are for enjoyment. I also can't wait for the next one to be created.

In this, you will meet Elizabeth Bennet and her chaotic family. I've always been a huge fan of Lizzy because she just seemed like a woman who knew what she wanted. She was stubborn, intelligent, and quick with words and wit when needed. I also enjoyed how she kept Mr. Darcy on his toes because he was nowhere near prepared to deal with her.

As for him, well, he's equally adorable in my eyes. Yes, he can come off a bit hard from time to time, but I liked how Laura made him a bit more relatable and likable in this retelling. It was interesting to see how enamored he was of Lizzy in the beginning instead of being so standoffish. She intrigued him constantly and soon feelings were bound to develop.

Then there's the drama. Oh, the drama. Whether its family related or not - I ate it all up. Each page and chapter just sucked me back into the world I know and love. In the end, I'm very happy that I got the chance to jump into this and I can't wait for Laura's next book.

A delightful retelling of Jane Austen's classic tale. The Bennet family is portrayed realistically in their

social and economic setting., with five daughters to marry off. The story unfolds in a very simplified way making it

accessible to young readers. and pupils who need an easier way to read. and become acquainted with this story.

This book will promote reading confidence and enjoyment.

The 3-star rating comes from the fact that I'm not really the target audience for this book, and I kind of expected it to be a twist on P&P rather than a... let's say, straightforward retelling. It's probably not very fair of me, but that being said, if you're looking for an easy-to-read version of Jane Austen's masterpiece for a kid in middle school or even for an English Second Language class, this would be a very good pick. Laura Wood manages to capture the bare bones of P&P perfectly, and in a way that will encourage readers to read the original when they are ready to do so.

This was disappointing. I saw that it was a Pride and Prejudice retelling and requested immediately as I *adore* P&P. However, it turns out the "retelling" is just a straight copy of Pride and Prejudice with some of the wording changed to make it more modern. And it's not even very good writing.

We have such sentences as: "No!" Lizzy yelped. "I mean..." she stuttered.

That's just... I can't read one of my favorite novels rewritten like that. I read and skimmed the first third, skimmed farther in case the quality improved, and then gave up.

If I had read this before reading the original, I might not have enjoyed P&P much, and that would have been a travesty.

I am a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice, it is was one of my most favourite classic novels so I was really intrigued when I saw this version, a retelling of this timeless classic. But, Laura has accentuated and taken the key themes and scenes from the original text and has retold this beautiful story to make it a more accessible read for all readers, including reluctant readers without spoiling or compromising the impact the original novel has. I am really impressed, as this must be a very difficult thing to do.

Whilst reading this book it was really nice that the characters and themes felt the same as how Jane Austen had portrayed them. I didn’t feel that Laura had changed anything that hadn’t happen throughout the original story which this was really pleasing to read.

Classic novels do not appeal to some younger readers but the stories are wonderful so I am really happy that Laura has written this book and I hope many more authors continue to write more accessible books of these timeless stories.

A huge thank you to the publishers, Barrington Stoke, for letting me read an advanced copy of Pride and Prejudice on Netgalley to read and review on my blog.

As a woman that believes Jane Austen walks on literary water, this abridged version keeps everything great about the classic, while also simplifying the language and social commentary of Austen's time. This is a perfect introduction to classic literature for upper elementary and middle grades.

This condensation of Pride and Prejudice does a wonderful job maintaining the character development and central plot points with an economy of words. Some of this is accomplished with direct phrases, such as removing much of Mr. Bennet's banter and just stating he loves to tease his family. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books and worthwhile to make accessible to all. Great for high/low or young readers.

This was a fast read. Definitely a quick read for an updated classic. Can't wait to share with my eighth grade students.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite classic novels and this retelling was absolutely amazing! I think this book would be great for a younger audience and for anyone who wants to get into reading the classics by Jane Austen. Laura Wood really stayed true to the original story and it felt authentic.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite classics of all time. I was really excited when I was provided with an Arc of this book as I have been trying to get my daughter to read my favorite book but she is dyslexic and the length and style of writing are a bit much for her. We read through this version together and she loved it! This is such a great way to bring classics to those who may have a harder time with them. Now she wants to try reading the original version!

I used to be one of those people who believed everyone had to read the classics. But in reality, books change, language changes, and society changes what they consume. The classics may have been wonderful, but they are simply not compatible with a lot of modern readers.

That being said, it's a huge feat to take on a retelling of such a famous story and it was done marvellously. Full of the charm and elegance of the original tale, this will sweep you into one of the worlds most iconic love stories in a new and fresh way. Of course this isn't exactly true to the original and has a quicker pace, but this is exactly what you should expect.

With modern language, this retelling carefully rewords the witty remarks and jokes that simply wouldn't make sense in this time, changes antiquated terms and creates a more accessible way to enjoy classic literature. Perfect for younger readers or anybody who may struggle with reading, I definitely hope Laura Wood turns her hand to some more tales soon!

Pride and Prejudice- a retelling was indeed an easy-to-follow retelling that did the original justice. The writing was lucid and made the read enjoyable for younger readers. This would be perfect for someone wanting to read an easy version of Jane Austen!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free e-arc!

As a fan of Austen's work since I was a teenager and a fan of Laura Wood's historical fiction work, I was very intrigued to see how she would retell Pride and Prejudice. I love the premise (that it stays true to the original work but simplifies some of the more antiquated language of the original that might put off reluctant readers or modern teenagers in general). Overall, I think it achieves its goal and would make an excellent gateway into the world of Austen's genius. The one thing I feel it lacks is a sense of the characters' interior worlds. Both Austen and Wood are very good at creating vivid characters, but I feel that in trying to simplify the original work character development was sacrificed to language and plot. Therefore I wouldn't recommend that it be required reading in a course, but it could make an excellent independent reading book to help bring more young people to Austen.

An abridged retelling of Pride and Prejudice that makes the story accessible. I think this would be a perfect gift for younger readers or readers who find the classics intimidating. Wood captures Austen’s essence in her retelling.

I will forever stand by the fact that Pride and Prejudice is by far my favorite novel, and that it was Mr. Darcy that first had me falling in love with the misunderstood morally grey individuals we so often see in works of fiction these days.

This retelling stuck true to the classic but was formed and progressed in a way that I think would be more attainable for younger readers. Laura Wood stuck to the core of what makes Pride and Prejudice so great, keeping the characters and their values and who they are as Austen intended. Unlike other retellings where authors will take liberties with the characters and their lives Laura Wood stuck to what we know and love about the store at its core.

I stand by my assessment that I think this would be great for young readers to introduce them to the world of Austen, and look forward to ordering a few copies for the young reader we have in my family, as well as making sure my friends who are English teachers have a few on hand for their classroom libraries.

I commend Laura Wood for the job she did here, and how instead of changing the characters I love, she brought them back to life as Austen had in her own writing. Beautifully done, and I can't wait to add a hard copy to my own shelf filled with the different variations of Pride and Prejudice.

This is a great shortened version of a classic! The characters are still captured well and none of the main plot is really lost.

This is a great version especially for younger readers that might be intimidated by the original. It is not easy to adapt a classic novel.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book for my honest review.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books and Laura Wood is one of my favourite contemporary authors. So it is an understatement to say thatI was looking forward to read this retelling! Thank you to @netgalley and @barringtonstoke for sending me the eARC. 😊

I have written a DETAILED review on my FB page (link below) but since everyone might not like looooong posts, here’s the review in a nutshell. This is an enjoyable retelling that achieves its objective of making a classic more accessible. I have always mourned that present day readers, especially teenagers, find classics too intimidating or unrelatable or flat-out boring. But I also feel that the super simplified versions adaptations- for readers as young as 7 or 8- do much disservice to the originals. Laura Wood has managed to achieve that fine balance between retaining the heft of the original, and simplifying the text to make it accessible to today’s young readers. Though a few illustrations (in the classic style) would have been the cherry on the top!

Recommended for children aged 10-12.
