A real family epic with lots of twists and secrets coming to the fore.
Naomi lives at Anchor House were she and her late husband raised their daughters Martha and Willow.
The girls are very different characters; Martha organised and forceful, Willow softer and taking life as it comes.
When Ellis moves in next door to Naomi and they realise that they have a history the close relationship between mother and daughters is tested.
This is another wonderful read from an author who never fails to deliver.
most enjoyable book to read shows how peoples lives are not plain sailing but families come together to help resolve and all comes together in the end
I have been reading Ericas books forever
This one doesn’t disappoint
Another great book
Can’t wait for the next one
Thanks NetGalley
I really enjoyed Mothers and Daughters by Erica James. As a mother of daughters and a daughter myself, so much was relatable.
A story of secrets and love, Naomi is mother to Willow and Martha, and recently widowed. Martha desperately wants a baby and a family whereas Willow is pregnant but not sure she wants all that comes with family life. Ellis comes back into Naomi's life after many years and in true Erica James style, all the strands eventually come together and resolve.
With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
#MothersandDaughters #NetGalley A well written book about family secrets and relationships. Easy to read but the story was not all roses and romance, the subject matter touched on some difficult areas such as grief and domestic violence. I half guessed the ending but there was a little twist near the end and part of me was very sorry that Rick did not suffer more! Would love to read more from this author.
Mothers and Daughters, the latest novel from Erica James, is as the title suggests a multi-generational story featuring widow Naomi and her two adult daughters Martha and Willow which explores the family dynamics of the three women and their relationships.
The story is narrated from the viewpoints of each of the women with the occasional chapter from their male counterparts which gives us an insight to each of them, their everyday lives and the complexities of their relationships. The more we read, the more we discover about hidden secrets - both in the past and the present day - and that the girls are struggling to accept that their mother is starting to make a new life for herself after the death of their father.
At first Martha really irritated me with her judgemental nature and not being able to be happy for those around her, whereas I found myself wanting to shake Willow and tell her to stand up for herself and see what was really going on in her relationship. But by the end both women had redeemed themselves in my eyes, Martha for being there for her sister and Willow for standing up for herself. As for Naomi, she deserved happiness but I understood why she didn't want to upset her daughters especially when they were both dealing with their own issues that were making them unhappy.
Mothers and Daughters is a book that you will easily lose yourself in. But don't be fooled into thinking this is going to be a light-hearted read as there are some dark and serious issues explored that show us that you never really know what is going on behind closed doors.
Erica James does it again
A beautifully written story about family secrets and the impact it can have on everyone in that family
Assumption are made for very good reasons but actually have a detrimental effect that are carried from childhood into adulthood.
It is an absolutely brilliant read one that you just can’t put down.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, I absolutely loved it. I haven't read any Erica James for a while but thoroughly enjoyed this one and couldn't put it down. Naomi is a widow, her larger than life husband has passed away two years previously. In some ways she and her two daughters are still, grieving and we can see how he affected all of their lives. Naomi's old flame Ellis moves in next door and we see how his presence affects the family. We also gain an insight into the daughters' romantic relationships and their personal struggles. This book was so easy to read with believable characters and a realistic portrayal of how the dynamics of family relationships work. Secrets are uncovered with not always happy consequences but it illustrates the strength and love in families. A great read that I was sad to reach the end of.
Mothers and Daughters by @the_ericajames another @netgalley read. Naomi and her daughters are getting over the death of their husband and father. Martha and Willow who are the daughters are very different and don’t always see eye to eye. However like many families, this family has its secrets and we watch these secrets unfold. I have never read anything by this author before however after reading this I will definitely been reading more from this author. I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. I love the way the author makes it feel current , set in current times with mentions of covid, which instantly draws you in. I loved that the main characters were strong woman and that they each were so similar but also so different. When the secrets came out the similarity’s between the daughters became so much clearer. Right from the beginning I knew this book had great potential, potential to be a great book and I wasn’t disappointed. There was something by the way that it was written that made it feel like the plot and the writing had a sense of maturity to it, it flowed, every word seemed to be perfectly written as though it was always meant to be written this way, if that makes sense. It felt like you were reading about people you knew or had read about before. For me it was so much more than what I expected and the plot went in a completely different direction to which I thought it would, so definitely a few surprises along the way. Also don’t judge this book by it’s cover because it tackles some tough subjects grief and abuse to name just a couple. It parts it’s quite gritty but I loved that it wasn’t what I expected. The only thing I would say is that it took a little dip in the middle, where I wondered where this was going however the plot twist soon gets it back on track. This book will make you laugh and cry and it will make go wow has that just happened! To be honest it will make you feel every emotion possible and I can see this as a tv series, thanks to the writing it jumps from the pages into the imagination of the reader and plays out like a movie in your mind. I will be recommending this book to everyone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Oh wow still reading at 3 a.m I could not give up until I finished it.
Two sisters, so different, Martha and Willow and their mother Naomi, all with secrets which were withheld for too long.
Along comes a best from the past in the firm of gorgeous Ellis who sounds so nice and who proves to be the linchpin who holds it all together.
I love Erica James books and this was another page turner late into the morning!
Thank you netgalley for this Arc.
I have read all of Erica James' novels, and Mothers and Daughters is definitely up there with the best of them. The story is told from the point of view of three female members of the same family - mother, Naomi, and daughters Martha and Willow. They each have their own hopes and dreams and secrets. It is only when revelations about the past come to light that they are able to fully understand the dynamics of their relationship with each other.
This book sensitively highlights some serious issues. Throughout the ups and downs experienced by each of the main characters, it is the loving bond between mothers and daughters that sees them through.
A warm, satisfying read that I would highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Another brilliant novel from Erica James, I used to always read her latest novel as soon as it was released, but I haven’t done that recently, but after spotting this on Netgalley, I just knew that I had to request it, and I am so pleased that I was approved.
Since the sudden death of her husband, Naomi has steadily rebuilt the life they shared in the village of Tilsham by the sea.
Her eldest daughter, Martha, is sensible and determined – just like her father was – and very much in control of where her life is going. If she could just get pregnant with her husband, life would be perfect.
Willow, the youngest, was always more sunny and easy-going, yet drifted through life, much to her father’s frustration. But now, with charming new boyfriend, Rick, she has a very good reason to settle down.
The three women are as close as can be. But there are things Naomi has kept from her daughters. Like the arrival of Ellis, a long-lost friend from way back, now bringing the fun and spark back into her life. And she’s certainly never told them that her marriage to their father wasn’t quite what it seemed…
This is a page turning story about relationships, life and exactly what lengths mothers will go to protect their children. It was another unputdownable book, and I was really invested in the characters too, there was such a broad mix, from the hard-working Naomi to the rather displeasing Rick, whom it seemed was just there to irk everyone. The setting was idyllic too, a beautiful coastal village, with just enough going on, and a few ‘nosy’ neighbours too!
A perfect book to read either curled up under a blanket with a nice cup of tea or lying on the beach with a cool drink to hand.
Thank you to @netgalley and @hq for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A beautifully written book which has the reader engaged from the start. This book was outstanding and memorable!
It was a family drama involving the Miller family , Naomi and her two grown up daughters Martha and Willow. The storyline had many twists and turns producing a multi layered book, as it explored the dynamics of all the various relationships. Some extremely difficult subjects were handled sensitively, which gave an insight into why certain characters acted like they did . All the main characters were likeable and engaging
In all , an outstanding read which I would highly recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley, HQ and Erica James for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review
Mothers and Daughters by Erica James was a complete delight. After a reading drought (I just couldn’t get properly into anything as easily as I normally would) this book hooked me right in and held me captive until the wee small hours. Fantastically rounded characters with a lovely plot line around their lives. I was immersed in Naomi, Martha and Willow’s hopes and dreams, fears and insecurities. The storyline rolls along without pause and rounds out the male characters too, introducing a few very real and dark social issues. Erica handles these well and the feel-good nature of the book is a balm. I totally loved this read but accept it’s a genre I enjoy and with that, to be fair, it’s a little predictable and neat. Not a minus to me. Five resounding stars
Erica James novels are always a good read and Mothers and Daughters does not dissapoint.A truly relateable story about the relationship between a mother and her two very different daughters.
I was given a copy of Mothes and Daughters by NetGalley and the publishers ion return for an unbiased review.
A family drama type of book that draws you in.
Not everything is sunshine and roses in this family and there were some difficult events covered. it certainly went a little darker than I was expecting but this provided an effective. balance to what could otherwise have been a fairly predictable read.
The characterisation was strong throughout although often overstated with regards to the two daughters.
Mothers and Daughters by Erica James ⭐️⭐️⭐️
As sisters Martha and Willow couldn’t be more different and so when their widowed mother Naomi starts a new romance with an old flame they disagree with how they should handle the situation.
As the story unfolds we learn more about the family’s secrets and how the past can hold us back. All the characters are well described and complex enough to make them interesting, but I think Naomi was my favourite.
This is a fairly gentle read that deals with some hard hitting subjects of infertility and domestic abuse, and of the beautiful and complicated nature of the relationships between mothers and daughters
A well written, poignant, and riveting family drama about mother, daughters, and relationship. I think that the author created a very realistic description of how this very complex relationship can be.
Great storytelling and character development
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I was given an arc copy of this book by The Publisher and Netgalley for an unbiased review. I found this book a bit hard going. Obviously a Mother & her 2 Daughters form the basis of this story, following the death of her Husband. The girls are in their 30s. The eldest was Daddy's Girl and the other constantly being compared and belittled by him. She felt she was never good enough. Whilst staying in her Friend's house cat sitting, her Boyfriend suddenly decides it's time they move in together in his flat. He becomes obsessed by her and displays gaslighting tendencies. Her Family become very concerned. There are issues around their Mother's new relationship where they dont seem to realise that she is entitled to be happy. The ending of the book surprised me with several things that I didnt see coming!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily.
I do not intend to deliver spoilers, or repeat parts of the plot in the way some other reviewers have. This book is accurately described as a family drama, and I thought feelings and emotions among the family members were explored and described very well. The combination of secrets and lies hidden from others in the family are realistic and completely believable. I found the tale totally absorbing and an unexpected twist or two (and some predictable events) kept me engaged right to the last page. If you like well-written contemporary fiction I'm sure you will enjoy this as much as I did.
