You're My Cutie was one of the most adorable shoujos I've read all year! The story follows Madoka, who's obsessed with romance stories about cute younger boys falling for their upperclassmen. So when a cute younger boy starts working part-time at her parents' dinner, the stars should align, but Shikura's face and personality do much at all. At least, not until he starts pulling up the shutters around his heart and the two grow closer.
This manga has such a wonderful natural progression of their friendship and budding relationship, and I loved how both of them were characterized. All the awkward moments of them tiptoeing around each other were so sweet and funny, and since this is a dynamic I don't see often it was really refreshing. I can't wait to read more, since it left off on such a cliffhanger!
Part of the way through reading this, I forgot I had to review this and just thought I was reading a manga for fun. This is great! The plot has good pacing, the illustrations are lovely and clear, and things are clarified for an English-speaking audience that might not understand certain cultural specificities. I appreciate how complete the characters are, and how we get a peek into Shikura's life and mind. He's not just a pretty face and a bad personality, he's someone who's been hurt and is trying to live a normal and fulfilling life. I mean, and he's kinda adorable, not that I have a crush on him or anything!!
Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for the ARC.
Thank you NetGalley & Kodansha for this opportunity!
What I love about this manga
I LOVE SHOJO MANGA A LOT! It makes my heart go fuwa-fuwa. And this manga is so cute!! My heart about to explode while reading this!!! Shikura acting like an a** for while but now he's cute!!! UGH he's not cute! He's GORGEOUS!!!!! My face goes all red while reading this manga. I am totally going to get myself a copy. I am head over heels for Shikura kun,. All in my mind is Shikura kun. It is a cliche plot but I love it a lot. Plus the artstyle i love it too. Shikura kun really play hards to get, I pity Madoka. I love their relationship. A wholesome relationship. I might die reading this manga. My heart can't handle it anymore.
I'm a big fan of Shoujo manga and I found You're My Cutie to be a great one, and I really can't wait for volume 2 when it comes out in a few weeks. Main character, high schooler Madoka is similarly a fan of Shoujo manga in particular when an older classmate falls for sweet younger classmen. So when a younger classman, Shikura starts working at her family restaurant he is exactly her type... until he opens his mouth and starts spouting rude comments and is very standoffish. But the more they work together and the more Madoka proves to Shikura isn't anything like the normal girls in his life and that she doesn't have a crush on him, the more of his true personality shows. Shikura is actually very shy and sweet beneath all of that gruff exterior. But what is Madoka to do when she finds out Shikura is actually very much her type...?
There is not much for the plot except for showing a sweet romance blooming between the two main characters and some great show of boundaries and getting comfortable with a person, which was incredibly sweet!
THAT ENDING! THE CLIFFHANGER LIKE WHAT?!
I don’t really have many things to say about this manga. It’s cute, the art is lovely and overall, it’s fits well into the “nice reset” stories I like reading. It’s just a pleasant and sweet kind of read when you are in the mindset for something cute.
This was such an adorable manga! We follow our main character Madoka and the boy her family hires to help them out at their diner. He’s a lot more reserved so the two of them slowly form a friendship.
The progression of their friendship was so adorable! It felt so natural and was full of cute, hilarious and moments that had me so hyped for the two of them. I can’t wait to see where things go in the next volume! This one ended on such a cliffhanger!!
Highly recommend if you love a good shojo romance manga! So heartwarming!

I really enjoyed this manga. It's not free of cliché and at times I felt as if the relationship between the two main characters (Madoka & Shikura-kun) was progressing a bit too fast, but the story hooked me nonetheless.
Besides the gorgeous artwork, what I liked most was Shikura-kun's characterization. He was far more complex than your average hot guy. On the surface, he looked arrogant and cool and composed but actually, he was an adorable, goofy mess.
I would surely read more from this series.
Fun story that falls a bit of the generic, cliche trope but I did enjoy the artwork and it's characters.
You're My Cutie! is the first book in a series of mangas by Nakaba Harufuji. Kodansha Comics was very kind to accept my request, and I'm glad they did because this manga was a real pleasure to read. Being an avid reader of shojo, the trope that readers can find in You're My Cutie! is not exceptional, yet it makes us all have an enjoyable moment.
I was surprised because I think it is my first time reading a manga in which the girl is older than the boy, but it was nice and also very interesting to see the differences. Madoka-san is very bossy, and I liked her very much for that. She develops her sweet side through her magazines, like some teenage girls would do with series and books, yet she is very mature for her age. She is not a child anymore: she helps her parents with their restaurant and is very responsible when it comes to doing things on her own when her parents ask her to, for instance, go buy some things at the groceries store.
As for Shikura- kun, he seems very cold at the beginning, perhaps also very rude towards Madoka-san, but, when Madoka starts to know him, she understands that his life is not as easy as it seems. Shikura-hun is a sempai who's very handsome; the girls at his school are obsessed with him and don't let him be free. Their attitudes towards him could basically be all the coincidences one could find in a shojo: them falling into his arms *coincidentally*, or bumping into him, or lending him their umbrella to avoid being soaked under the rain...etc. When Shikura-kun brings up all these situations, it's actually very funny to notice that these coincidences are too good to be true and, for him who is a 'victim' of them every day, it is very tiring. That is why he wants to put a distance from Madoka at the beginning. He doesn't want her to fall in love with him.
On the whole, I appreciated my reading. It is fast-paced, nice to read, the translations are good. But the plot didn't surprise me and, sometimes, it felt a bit too fast. Like, for instance, on one page Shikura wants to be the farthest away from Madoka, and on another, it is the contrary. I won't spoil the end, but I was a bit irritated by how things ended at the end of the first book. It felt a bit like 'All those things for...that?'. But I guess that, for a new reader of shojo, this turn of situation would be great. For me, who have read many many many shojos before, it left me unemotional.
I would still recommend You're My Cutie! because it is nice to read, the drawings are amazing, and it is funny!
Speaking about this, it was released on September 21st, so don't hesitate to grab your copy if you're interested in this manga! Thanks again Kodansha Comics for the eARC!
Review to come in a few days: I received this book from Netgalley/Kodansha publishers in exchange of an honest review.
I just HAD to request this manga, it looked right up my alley. Adorable, fun, featuring a hot guy. What more could I want? XD
In this one we meet our MC, a girl named Madoka who works at her parents store. She loves cute guys, especially when they are kouhai (aka younger than her). I really loved Madoka, and I loved how unfazed she was... well for most. Haha, we can see he is affecting her in ways, but she holds it in/to herself which I just loved. I also definitely loved seeing her slowly fall for him when she discovers more of his personality, when they get closer and closer. She had some fantastic facial expressions that made me laugh at times. I also love that, despite that she wants to have more fun with friends/clubs/etc. she sticks to helping out her parents.
Then there is Shikura-kun, a hot guy whose personality definitely doesn't fit his pretty boy exterior. Really, the guy looks hot and composed and tough, but actually he is just like a puppy. He puts his apron on wrong, gets lost because he went after a kitty, loses his phone, and so much more. It was just fabulous how he actually was. I am definitely happy that he turned out this way, because the first few pages I just wanted to punch him. XD I also felt for him and how girls treated him. I get it girls, he is hot. No need to stalk him, pounce on him, and all that. Sexual harassment is not cool. I was happy for him that he could open up to Madoka, and also her family. That he found out that there was a safe place with a girl who wasn't immediately horny for him. I am proud that he said his excuses over certain things, because yeah, you make it real hard for Madoka to help you if you are that hyper-focussed on things (which again, I can understand given all the girls and how they react to him), but I am happy he realised it. Good boy!
The story is pretty much slice of life with a dash of romance in it and that was just what I needed.
The ending, OK, now I need more of this! Hello? You cannot just end it like that!!!
The art was just fabulous and I love the style of it. The facial expressions were top notch!
All in all, looking for a cute manga about a girl who isn't so fazed by a hot guy and a hot guy who has a whole different personality than you may think when you see him first? Try this one!
Instead of a meet cute, You're My Cutie is like repulse-cute. The typical cringe set up would have our two protagonists falling for each other within the first chapters but in this story it's commendable that our heroine gets repulsed by the guy's personality and tries to focus on their work relationship instead. Key word: tries. The two put up a commendable effort to get along and slowly get to know each other like normal humans who just happen to be in an ideal setup. (I received a free ARC from the publisher via NetGalley for my honest opinion.)
This was so cute. I really enjoyed this read. Shikura and Madoka is a unique pair. Shikura is the type of guy that does not like girls who fall for him. His guard is always up. At first, he seems to be rude and egotistical. However, in reality, he is only protecting himself from others. This book portrays a 'don't judge a book by its cover' type of feel. I cannot wait to read more from this series.
*DISCLAIMER: I received a free copy of this manga from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
I might be 23 years old and 100% cynical when it comes to romance, but nobody, NOBODY will keep me away from a cute shoujo manga whenever I want to relax and enjoy something light-hearted!
True, there are some tropes that I like more then others (and who doesn't?).
"You're My Cutie" contains exactly some of the elements that I love the most:
- a funny, empathetic and not eccessively girly protagonist (with 17% of clumsiness)
- a younger male character, apparently really moody and unfrendly but with an adorable cute+goofy side
I can't say much more because I don't want to spoil you anything, but I can grant you that is the perfect manga to read if you're looking for something fluffy and funny to spend your afternoon/evening!
Thank you to Kodansha and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
You're My Cutie, Volume 1 by Nakaba Harufuji an absolutely adorable shojo manga. The story revolves around Madoka, a high school heroine who is a huge fan of manga where innocent, pure-hearted boys fall in love with upperclassmen boys. She dreams about this happening in real life to her. When a boy who is her ideal type starts working at her family's restaurant, it should be a dream come true. But what happens when she finds out the boy is has a rude attitude? He's nothing like the boy of her dreams. Will sparks fly anyway?
Overall, You're My Cutie is perfect for fans of shojo manga like Kiss Me At the Stroke of Midnight or Princess Jellyfish. First of all, I absolutely loved the modern and cute art style of this book. The characters are drawn perfectly in standard shojo style, and every page was a sight to behold. Anyone who wants to reminisce about falling in love for the first time or about high school relationships will enjoy reading this book. Another thing that I really enjoyed was the brutal beginning of the book. The characters start off hating each other, but gradually, they start to become closer. If you enjoy slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romances, or if you're a fan of shojo manga in general, I highly recommend that you check out this book, which is available now!
Gosh this is utterly adorable! The art is super cute and the characters are so fun. I love how Shikura has a very pretty face, but his personality comes across abrasively, especially as he's often been accosted by women which has made him wary. I also really enjoy Madoka trying to be a cool, older coworker and also not fall for Shikura, but seeing his soft, scatterbrained side absolutely trips her up. This was such a cute, fun manga, and I cannot wait to see what's going to happen next after that ending!
Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for allowing me to read the first volume of this very cute manga. I mean seriously man, the art in this shoujo is heaven 😍😍😍😍😍😍
You’re My Cutie, Vol 1 is a really fun start to what seems like will be an adorable and excellent Shojo series. Our heroine is Kawahara Madoka, who’s friends and family tease her for being into younger, soft guys. She works at her father’s diner and this is where she bumps into the grumpy and aloof Shikura Momoki - the newest part timer. Shikura is used to people taking advantage of him so he has his guard up around Kawahara, but we don’t know exactly why yet. But the more time these two spend around each other, the more a genuine affection for each starts to blossom.
This story is so heartwarming and fun - it will make you squee - but then also there’s a really great theme of boundaries and understanding that people will take time to open up on their own pace. And there’s even emphasis on the respect for those boundaries - so that was really excellent to see in a Shojo Manga! You’ll still get your fun tropes of “quick we have to fake date!” or “boy gets sick and must be taken care of,” but it’s all in a little more of a thoughtful lens.
The art is gorgeous and sells the shojo aesthetic, but also there is a unique humour that the artist brings that really helps sell the tone of the story. And it has one of my favourite eyeball reactions in a long time! Definitely recommend and really excited to see where this story goes!
*Thank you Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for the ARC*
Sigh. My year of re-living my manga reading college days continues. I am loving on the manga and this one is no exception.
The artwork is cute, beautiful and funny when necessary. The storyline is solid and the characters are all real and three-dimensional. I love it and want more.
Definitely one I will be recommending at the store and I can't wait for the next one to come out!
4, solid and sweet, stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
ARC Copy...hmm doesn't feel strong on me so far but I can sense this could be a romantic and promising start to the series.
