The Patient started off well for me, it is well written and I was drawn to the setting of my home town of Salisbury and the character of Rachel. However I found that the relationship between Rachel and Luc did not ring true for me, this quickly became too melodramatic and I increasingly lost interest in the plot.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC

Rachel Goodchild is a GP and married to Nathan for 25 years when she meets Luc Lefevre, a patient and falls in love with him. Luc is also married to Ophelia and recently moved to Salisbury. Luc and Rachel start an affair. With her head turned by the affair, she behaves totally out of character. I read this book quick as I wanted to know what happened in the end. A gripping read as murder and stalkers are thrown into the mix.

I've never read anything written from a doctor's perspective before and to be honest I found this one a bit grim and depressing. Nevertheless it develops into a well thought out, gripping murder mystery.
Well worth the read.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. A gripping thriller with numerous twists, and a very clever story. The characters are all slightly unbelievable, but not so much as to spoil my enjoyment of the book. Definitely one I would recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great story telling as it wove a compelling and intriguing plot about a GP caught up in a love affair with one of her patients. I couldn't put it down! Wonderful settings and characterisation, thank you!

A beautiful book! I was hooked from page one! Totally immersed in the characters and the story. Twists and turns throughout. Fast paced with murder, family tribulations, deceit, love and suspense! A truly wonderful read. A triumph for Jane Shemilt.

This was a amazing thriller, telling the story of a doctor falling for her patient and risking everything in the process, especially since she supplies him with drugs. I loved every second of this frightening story.

Was very happy to receive an advance copy of @jane.shemilt's next novel 'The Patient' for release in April 2022. Thank you to the author, publisher @harpercollinsuk and @netgalley. This was a compelling read with strong characterisation. Dr Rachel Goodchild is a well respected GP living in Salisbury, married for decades to history teacher Nathan and with an emotionally distant adult daughter Lizzie. Carrying some guilt about a patient who could have been saved from his breakdown and then subsequent suicide, Rachel decides that the stringent timings she works to sometimes need to be scrapped. When a man who isn't a patient arrives after hours in extreme distress, Rachel puts those timings aside to alleviate his pain, talk to him and get to know who he is. He is Luc Lefèvre and she knows that as her patient, she shouldn't be attracted to him but she is. Cue a spiralling love affair, a sultry visit to France and then a few murders thrown in for good measure and we have the makings of a great thriller. I loved this and found not only the shadowy settings of Salisbury an apt location for a thriller but the affair between Rachel and Luc moves to the South of France where the hot sun pulses onto naked skin, the sound of cicadas hangs in the air and the smells of lavender and grass make for an evocative read.

An easy to read, fast paced book that I couldn’t put down and finished in a day.

I enjoyed this book on the whole, however there were some moments where excitement and drama started to build up, but then these weren’t developed further and felt unfinished.

An enjoyable book full of intrigue. Rachel , a well respected GP falls for one of her patients, threatening to destroy both marraiges and have a host of complicated consequences. Add stalking, murder and a famous painting and it will give you a sense of what this book has to offer. While a little unbelievable it was engaging and worth the read.

An OUTSTANDING WORK OF FICTION. LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT. This is a stunning, completely absorbing, gripping book which is impossible to stop reading. Draws you in from the get go and the ending is breath taking.. The protagonist Rachel is a well respected doctor, who just wants to help everyone, she's happily married, or so she thought. Her patient Luc is an attractive man, who moves into her village with his wife Olivier. Brian one of her neighbours is a lonely old soul, who just wants a friend and he starts following Rachel. This is when the plot starts getting tense. Two murders happen in the village and they all point to Luc, that's when twists starting happening. The plot is amazing, there are plenty of surprizes, characters all have depth and they are relatable. This is the first book I have read by Jane and what a book to get me hooked, I will now be buying all Jane's other books. I would give this book a millions stars if I could, I really did enjoy it.

Wow! I was sucked in by the first few pages and I couldn't put it down! I loved all the twists and turns, especially one near the end that I hadn't seen coming! I did figure out who the murderer was about halfway through but was still unsure, such were the twists, turns and tension!. The locations were fantastic and I really felt like I'd been transported there. I will definitely be looking out for more books by the author.

I read this one pretty quickly; it was easy to read and I was keen to know what happened.

I really didn't like the main characters which always spoils a book for me and I felt as if there was a lot about their background went unsaid.

I felt as if it was a little far fetched at times. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book!

I was between 3 and 4 stars and went for 4 in the end because I really didn't put it down much for a few days.

I loved this one. Very fast paced, had me turning pages as I tore through it – I had to see how it would end. The characters were well rounded and the narrative felt believable. Gave me chills. Solid five

A melting pot of story and scenery. Descriptions of Salisbury Cathedral Close and Southern France are perfectly portrayed to take you there. Rachel is a GP working in Salisbury, living an ordinary life in that milieu when love and crime send her spiralling out of her known orbit.. I couldn't wait to turn to the next page.

"When Rachel meets Luc, the attraction is instant.
But she is a doctor, and he is her patient."

An excellent read, with an interesting premise. I found this in parts engrossing, sometimes infuriating. There were times when I couldn't quite believe in the main relationship, neither Rachel nor Luc were pleasant characters, but perhaps that shows the skill of the writer.

A twisty spectacular thriller with some great shocking moments.
Hooked from the off and the pace never dropped.
A really intriguing character relationship worked for me.
Daring, surprising.

Rachel, a GP married to a teacher, has no idea what is in store when she agrees to see a patient, Luc Lefèvre, who turns up unexpectedly after hours. Before long Rachel - whose marriage is struggling and whose adult daughter, Lizzie, is emotionally distant - is caught up in a pretty dire situation. Stalking and murder are only the start of it...

The Patient, told from Rachel's perspective, is a really well written book which evokes a clear sense of place - the Close in the shadow of Salisbury Cathedral, where she lives, is well rendered.

I did guess the "twist" about the painting - to be fair it was clearly signalled at one point. Towards the end, my attention faltered a little and I wasn't totally sure what was going on, but I think that's a me problem.

I loved a previous book by Jane - Little Friends - and I couldn't honestly say I enjoyed this quite as much, but it was a good read nevertheless. Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was quite an average thriller. It was not memorable but I still enjoyed reading it. The plot was good and the characters were interesting. Being in the medical field myself, I particularly enjoyed the accuracy of the medical references.
