This is equal parts clever and well-written. A slightly different take on the do-over plot, which kept me interested throughout. Recommended.
I really appreciate the free review copy!!
The Correction
by John Hazen
Description
It’s human nature to make mistakes. We learn and grow because of them. What we can’t do is go back in time to correct a mistake—that is unless we meet Joseph Vance or his family. When Joe performs Corrections—a gift passed down generation to generation over eight hundred years—people are transported back for a do-over of a wrong decision they made. As a result, lives are changed, usually for the better. But after one Correction goes terribly wrong, Joseph loses what is most dear to him. He must then make a choice, one which will determine whether he will be redeemed or consigned to a life of despair.
What a wonderful, magical read. the Correction turned out to be! The story is told through the generations of a family with the gift. of a correction...or a do-over. Please give this book a chance, the writing is a well-written, pulled-together read.. I personally love it.
I received this e-book from NetGalley after it was published. I was hoping it was an advanced copy because I wanted to tell the publisher that there are a large number of typographical errors present and it could really use another round of editing. That definitely took off at least half a star from my rating. I would have likely given this 5 or at least 4.5 stars.
Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were a lot of historical references and the author is clearly knowledgeable about the past. The main character is a descendent of a long line of people who can alter somebody else’s past when they verbally express that they regretted their action. This gift is called The Corrections. It was interesting to hear the stories of his ancestors and some of the Corrections that they did. His stories were charming and fun to read. I was never quite sure what was going to happen next. Some Corrections turned out well and others did not. It’s dangerous to mess with time. It was interesting to try to appreciate the issues the main character went through in determining the ethical and moral consequences of his actions. This was definitely a feel-good book, almost inspirational. A really good read minus the typos. I would read more by this author.
If you could go back and live again but differently, would you? That’s the question posed to many in this entertaining, thought-provoking novel about a family that passes on the ability to let people have a “do-over”.Handled very well by the author, this fantasy doesn’t get weird, but moves sensibly through the generations encouraging the reader think about decisions made and being made.
