This is an interesting dystopian novel, which is a little different to the others I’ve read in that the people in this book don’t realise that they’re in a post-apocalyptic world. As far as they know this is just how everyone lives, at least everyone in the Silo because no-one else exists, or do they? They all live in a very hierarchical world where you live in certain places in the silo, for example those who work the machinery live in the lower sections and very rarely if ever venture to the top levels. Everyone knows where they belong and what they are born and bred to do. They also know that if you don’t obey the rules then you’ll be sent out of the Silo into the deadly world outside so you can clean the windows so that those inside can watch you slowly die. If this sounds a little frim and dark then you’re getting the feel for this book.
I have to admit that I had to take quite a few breaks while reading this book as I really did start to feel quite claustrophobic at times. I also felt that there was a lot more book than was strictly necessary, this story could have easily and well been told in a lot less pages. I completely understand is people gave up part way through, to be honest I partly did that myself. But once you start getting to the far end of the book it does start to get really interesting as people start discovering things. I’m guessing that there was so much book there just to ensure that the world was sufficiently built for us to feel exactly how the characters felt.
Overall this isn’t a bad book, just a little too long for the actual plot. The pacing is pretty good if a little slow at times, just when you’re thinking things have settled down there’s another secret revealed or something tragic happens to your favourite character. I will be reading the other books in this series but I might give it a while before I pick the next one up. I’m hoping that the next books are considerably shorter and have a little more going on in them or I’m going to be reading these books for years to come!
Thank you so much for accepting my request to review Wool. I must apologise for not reading and reviewing this book around the publishing date. My reading tastes have changed quite a bit and I don't think the dystopian genre is something I'm very interested in right now. Thank you.
