Fiona Gibson is a new to me author and after reading The Woman Who Took a Chance I am now hunting down her backlist.
I enjoyed the feel good nature of this story, it was real, relatable and I found it thought provoking.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly gifting me this book.
Great read for everyone but if you happen to be in your fifties is also shows how you can still meet the man of your dreams. Although I am younger I still thought this was a very enjoyable story. Well worth 5 stars. and I recommend it to all.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this e ARC
Jennifer Morton is a flight attendant. Correction... Was a flight attendant. Past tense. She's a fifty year's old unemployed ex flight attendant now. Wondering what to do next with time in her hands and her feet on the ground, she finds herself testing online dating sites just because of her twenty something year old insistence. But life doesn't get easier once you get to that and and status and a few more ingredients start to pop up to spice up her existence. New experiences collide against old habits and the mix begins to get interesting.
I loved this book very much. The characters are absolutely lovable, the pace is fantastic and the end is fabulous. It's one of these pieces I can say I loved from the first paragraph to the last. Quite enjoyable!
This is not the first book I read from this author, and it will not be the last.
Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book had a great premise and I really liked it. It was cute and fun and I enjoyed our main character. In fact there was a lot of character development throughout and it was written very well.
FINALLY representation for women who are over 50!!! The Woman Who Took a Chance is a sweet, laugh out loud romance novel. Jen, a redundant flight attendant, finally enters the world of dating apps as she got time on her hands to find love. Her dates and message exchanges are hilarious. Men should read this as a textbook of what NOT to do on date or message a potential love interest. This novel is more than just a romance, its about the opportunity to find what brings you joy no matter your age.
This novel is definitely a feel good romcom. Honestly, I have to believe there is some truth to her experiences with dating apps -YIKES!! This is a novel I will recommend because the MC's mature age as we are ALL not twenty-somethings looking for good love story.
Thank you AvonBooksUK for the advance reader copy.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I am a fan of Fiona's style of writing. It is also refreshing to have a female protagonist who is not in her 20s/30s. I could relate to some of the issues that Jen faced.
This isn't a typical romantic novel, although the main storyline is about Jen's experience of Online Dating. This book also focuses on the social issues that are facing Jen.
This is well written and humorous. It was an easy lighthearted read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
You can pretty much rely on Fiona Gibson to write a great story
Jen, 50, is left searching for a job when the budget airline she works for goes under and needs to take a holiday prize which she will lose if she doesn’t take it soon.
She manages to find a job in a local supermarket, however still hasn’t found the ideal travelling partner for the holiday.
When she meets a mature friend of her daughter, who tells her about her online dating stories and so Jen decides to adventure into online dating.
This is a great read and like many other readers I found it so refreshing to read a romantic comedy where the main character is close to my age rather than in their 20s or 30s. Jen is such a likeable, relatable character.
Thanks must go to Avon and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Fifty year old Jen has a job as a flight attendant, but she finds out that she’s lost the job she loved doing.
After her daughter talks her into it, Jen starts online dating and looks for a partner. Through the men she meets, the story outlines the downside of meeting people through technology and not face to face.
The characters were relatable and the story was easy to read.
The Woman Who Took a Chance by Fiona Gibson is a lovely story about a woman who got a second chance at life and love.
I quite enjoyed the book about a middle aged woman and her quest for love at that time of life.
I felt that situations, people, relationships and current state of affairs were realisticaly portrayed. There were few funny moments, few tearful ones and it is altogether a charming read.
The book is easy to read, it flows nicely although around the middle it drags on for a bit but I stuck with it and I am happy that I did as it rounded in a very satisfactory way.
Very uplifting and lively read and highly recommended.
Ooh I really loved this one, it was such a quick and easy read, the perfect palette cleanser in between your more hard hitting stuff.

When Jen finally succumbed to setting up the dating site profile and the men started tumbling in, that's when it really got going, I just loved all the different characters she attracted, it was such fun!
👠
I also enjoyed Jen's Mum's storyline, it added a touch of seriousness to the otherwise light and funny read but without it being too overpowering and taking over what is essentially a feel good novel.

I liked where it was set, Glasgow, there's not enough books set in Glasgow to be fair but unfortunately alot of the time i didn't know I was in Scotland at all. I think a bit of Scottish slang and maybe some deep fried food references(😂) would have went down a real added treat here but hey ho, I understand it's a very character driven plot and actually the characters more than made up for it!
Jen is a fifty something single mum who has just been made redundant when the airline she was a hostess for folded after covid.
Jen's daughter Hannah lives in London so invites her to stay for the weekend. Hannah and her friends persuade her it's time to make time for herself and to try online dating
Some disastrous dates and new friends make for a great read
I love Fiona Gibson! I loved her previous books and I was sure I would love this one.
I love the fact that her main female characters are not the usual 20/30 something and I love that they are always spot on characters, women you can easily relate to, with stories that feel authentic and true to life.
I can't wait to read her next book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest rreview.
This was quite a funny book, but the amount of "terrible" men was quite daunting, this was my first by Fiona Gibson, I will have a look at her other books, nice characters and deals with some deep issues.
Jen just lost the only job she’s ever worked. At 50 years old, she suddenly is forced to completely change her life. Her 23-year-old daughter, Hannah, convinces her to sign up for a dating site to find a man for a vacation Jen has already planned. In the past Jen has never been interested in dating, but now she’s thinking what the hell!
This book was interesting in that it didn’t really feel like reading a book at all. There really is no plot here or any suspense causing me to turn the pages. It felt like hearing about someone’s life except that someone is a fictional person so it doesn’t really matter much, does it?
This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy reading or felt bored. It did prevent me from really getting into the story, but I still found it entertaining and a light read. Jen’s prior job was a flight attendant, and funnily enough I was on a plane while reading! So to me, it felt like the right book for the occasion. There just wasn’t enough here for me to justify a higher score, so I’ll settle on a 2.5.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When 50 year old single Mom Jen loses her job to a redundancy, she’s at loose ends and decides to change up her life. New job, start dating, maybe finally take that dream vacation to Greece that she won at work.
The story moves along at an even pace, following Jen and the many men she meets. She also cares for her aging Mom, has a 23 year old daughter just starting her career and her daughter’s father, a man she loves, but “not in that way”. I thought it was a good representation of dating at 50, and the challenges of being in the sandwich generation.
I don’t put spoilers in my reviews so you’ll have to read it to find out how Jen’s life turns out. It’s a nice book for an afternoon and a cup of tea.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
If you are looking for a light-hearted, comical, feel-good romantic read that focuses on middle-aged second chances and life after children, this is the book for you!
This plot focuses on Jen's story, a 50-year-old mother of a grown-up daughter who has concentrated on her career instead of romance. She finds herself contemplating her life after being made redundant from her flight attendant job as the airline goes bust.
As the story develops, the reader learns more about Jen's character, and I like her. I hope I am as resilient as she is, and the concept of her being a strong, independent woman is brilliant. I am confident many readers will relate to her.
I was captivated by the writing style with plenty of laugh-out-loud incidents (no spoilers here). I was excited and intrigued to find out who would win Jen's heart after being convinced to try online dating for the mature woman.
Fiona Gibson is a beautiful rom-com writer, and although I haven't read all her work, this is a true delight that encourages me to read more by her.
Jen has been a flight attendant for her whole working career, so when she is suddenly made redundant she is at a loss what to do next. To make things worse she has a holiday prize that she won that must be claimed within months or she will lose it, but nobody to take with her. Jen's daughter has been pushing her for a while to try online dating, and although hesitant Jen decides that maybe now she is grounded it is a good time to start, and who knows maybe she can find someone to come to Greece with her.
This was a very enjoyable feel good read, with plenty of laughs along the way. Perfect for a holiday read or something to brighten up the dreary days of winter if you are in the Northern hemisphere.
Jen is a very likable character. It doesn't take long for readers to get to know her, and she is refreshingly honest and so relatable that it's impossible not to warm to her. I appreciated her and Rod's friendship, and I thought it was great that Gibson chose this backstory for her characters. It's awesome to see a slightly unconventional family unit being portrayed with such a positive outlook.
Jen's experiences with online dating are hilarious, and something that I think a lot of people these days will have some common ground with. Regardless of whether you have personal experience in this area or not you will definitely see the laughs (and potentially some of the horrors) of the online dating world. It's a pretty accurate picture!
This is the first book I've read by Fiona Gibson but I can see on GoodReads that she has quite an extensive back catalogue. I'll definitely be dipping in to see what else takes my fancy.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. Jen, the main character, was great. What was refreshing was for there to be a female protagonist aged 50, and I thought Jen was great. Redundancy, online dating apps, and dementia were all explored, so there was some substance to this book, alongside the romance. And yet, I wouldn't call this a romance. There is an element of romance, but it doesn't dominate. Jen is an independent woman and ends up going on, what was supposed to be a romantic holiday, with her female friend. :-) I appreciated the epilogue where loose ends were wrapped up nicely. With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Loved this book. I stayed up late to keep reading this. All the characters were so relatable. Jen’s dating dramas can be verified by women all over the world! I love that she was a little bit badass towards the end and I was really pleased with how it ended. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting a bit of escapism and a fun read.
As a fiona Gibson fan I was made up to be chosen to read this one for Netgalley. The plot follows 50something flight attendant Jennifer on her look out for love in the modern day, safe to say it doesn't always work out how it should. Also caring for her mother along the way. Fiona wrote the sensitive part perfectly.
I loved all the characters in this book. It was so easy to get into and had some o my god moments which i love too in it. And I always enjoy Fionas style of writing and have many of her books. A well deserved 5* on goodreads for this one. I'd recommend 👌
