This novel has a slow but compelling plot filled with suspense, twists, and red herrings that kept me guessing. The remote setting of Cumbria added to the sense of isolation and foreboding, creating a tense atmosphere that permeates the narrative.
Past and present timelines are woven together, providing glimpses into the history of Oaktree Farm and its inhabitants. The parallel investigations into the current crime and the unsolved murder from twenty years earlier added depth to the narrative, revealing the complexities of the characters and their relationships.
Overall, I found this to be an entertaining Christmas crime novel that offers a captivating mystery set against a wintry backdrop. I listened to the audio version and found it perfect for listening to while busy in the kitchen!
Really enjoyed this one. It's the second in the series and again we have a killer who strikes at Christmas but is also a murder entwined from years before can they solve this crime and the historical.one too. And we still have the fear that the detective will get hurt as his enemy has followed him from London. Really good and goes at a good strong pace.
I had a few download issues with the book and by the time it was sorted, the file had unfortunately been achieved.
The perfect Christmas time read. A small town with a big crime with the perfect twists to keep you hooked until the end. Can't wait for the next one!
Good Christmas read and a big improvement on the first in the series. With a family found murdered in their home it's up to DI James Walker to discover what happened, but all is not as it seems.
Great read, makes a change from the usual romance themed Christmas books.
James is hoping this year is going to be a quieter Christmas, unlike last year, but just when he thinks he coukd get his wish, the bodies of a family are found at their farm just outside the village. Initially appearing to be a murder-suicide, James is not convinced and on investigating further, uncovers a chilling similarity to a tragedy at the same farm over twenty years ago. Add into this, the criminal that he and his wife Annie fled London to avoid is now on the run and suspected to be heading North, James is most definitely not going to get the peaceful Christmas he was hoping for!
This is a really well-plotted mystery with excellent police procedural elements. In a picturesque setting with a cast of characters that we are getting to know more, it is a great Christmas read.
The Killer in the Snow by Alex Pine is the Second book in the DI James Walker series and narrated by Sid Sagar.. Length: 8 hrs and 56 mins
I found this audiobook Brilliant, it was fast paced and full of suspense throughout with likeable characters. The narrator, did an absolutely outstanding job of telling the story.
I highly recommend this series they have been Brilliant!
Big Thank you to Avon and Netgalley for this copy and audiobook which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily
This story is set in beautiful Cumbria and over the Christmas period. More a Deje Vue as a lonely farm in the middle of nowhere and 3 bodies murder or suicide? The same farm 20years previous the same happened and the killer never caught and the baby was never found presumed dead, so D I Walker takes on the case and really pushes the boat out to find a solution and to see if a solution could be found for the 20year old case as well.
The story was well presented and started off very well but did seem to sag in the middle a bit but well worth a listen and the narrator Sid Sagar did an excellent job.
I would like to thank Netgalley and HarperCollins UK for an audio copy to listen to.
I listened to the audio book version of this book and absolutely loved it! It really kept me hooked with all the twists and turns until what really happened at Oak Tree Farm is revealed.
This was my first Alex Pine and DI James Walker book, but it definitely won’t be the last, I’ll definitely keep my eye out for the next one as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for letting me review this.
Got the audio and the kindle version. Love it! Two days after Christmas, DI James Walker is called out to Oaktree Farm in rural Cumbria, where the Bateman family is found dead in a possible murder-suicide. The question is whether there is a connection to the murders that occurred at the same farmhouse twenty years earlier? There were some twists and turns right through to the very end!
The Killer in the snow. is the second book in the series of James the detective by Alex Pine.
James is investigating a case of a family who have been murdered in their own house, where 20 years earlier a similar crime was committed. Is it a coincidence or a copy cat?
The narrator is really good, helps describe the warming relationship between James and his wife and his character comes across as genuinely caring and interested in cracking the case.
Really good read and I can see me reading more of his books in the future.
Thanks so much for the ARC.
This is the second book in the DI James Walker series. Unfortunately I hadn’t read the first so part of the storyline was based on events in the first book. However, the main storyline was full of twists and turns and kept you guessing the outcome right to the very end !
The narrator was ok however his attempts at accents and differentiating between characters was really off putting and probably would’ve been better if he had just read them normally
The second in the series and I enjoyed it as much as the first. You don’t need to have read the first to enjoy this, but I am glad I had already read it. Interesting case and an interesting main character - I enjoyed both aspects to the story. I recommend if you like the genre. I also liked the narrator. I am looking forward to the next one.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the audioARC of this book.
DI James Walker Series #2
A year has passed since DI James Walker cracked his biggest case yet, and he's hoping for peace and quiet this festive season. But across the fells, a local farmer returns home on Christmas Eve to find footsteps in the fresh snow that lead down to his basement - an no footsteps leading away. Days later, his body is found, alongside those of his wife and daughter.
DI James Walker is investigating what looks like a murder/suicide of a farmer, his wife and daughter. But the more James Walker and his team investigate into the family, the more intriguing the case becomes. Over twenty years ago, the previous owners met a similar fate. There's also a dangerous London gangster who's went missing that's vowed vengeance on James Walker.
The pace is fast in this twist filled read. There's also plenty of suspects to choose from. This is quite a good series so far. The books can be read as a standalone.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #AvonBooksUK and the author #AlePine for my ARC of #TheKillerInTheSnow in exchange for an honest review.
this is a quick paced seasonal festive thriller. the second in a series but you can be read as a standalone although there is a side story that connects the two. The story has an easy to follow plot with different complications throughout that added depth. an enjoyable fun read
**please note due to low rating I will not be leaving a public review for this book as I have not paid for it.**
Narrator 3 stars
Story 2 stars
I really struggled to get into the story and it didn't really grab me until the end. The end and how it came together was fantastic just wish the lead up to it was a little more grabbing.
Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review the new Alex Pine Thriller. This is the second DI James Walker book I've read and was excited to be approved, It's not necessary to read the the first one, and also is set over the festive period but doesn't have the same feel.
DI James Walker is called out to Oaktree Farm in rural Cumbria, where the Bateman family is found dead in a possible murder-suicide. Twenty years earlier a similar set of murders occurred at the same farmhouse, but is there a connection?
I enjoyed this book as a follow up but preferred the first one, which seemed to have more of a cat and mouse theme. This one was more of a mystery to solve.
Love it! Enjoyed the story and the characters. Wasn't aware this was a series, but, now that I know, I will get to DI James Walker's book 1 asap.
Really appreciated the opportunity to get to know this writer and to have access to this ARC.
Following the success of The Christmas Killer, Alex Pine brings us another killer Christmas thriller The Killer In The Snow. I listened to the audiobook, which is fast paced and full of twists as DCI James Walker finds himself in the middle of another murderous crime investigation at Christmas, exactly one year after the events of the previous killing spree in an otherwise sleepy village. A couple and their daughter are found dead at their farm. Questions mount when strange foot prints are found in the snow, and a hidden peephole found in the walls. Additionally, the home is also the location of an unsolved crime some twenty years before. The village produces several suspects, but the truth constantly eludes us. On top of all the hype of the present murder enquiry and it's links to the cold case murders, James and his pregnant wife find themselves on the hitlist of an escaped and dangerous convict from London (the reason they relocated to the village), who is threatening vengeance - he holds James responsible for the loss of his marriage and family - they left without a trace after James helped send him to prison. So much going on in this book. It will have you guessing until the end. With thanks to #AvonBooksUK #HarperAudio #AlexPine and #Netgalley for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great book, I enjoyed it from the very beginning. Thanks to Net Galley for the audio version of this. It reminded me that I have another book by Alex Pine on my shelf that I still have to read and I can't wait now. Would highly recommend.
