An enjoyable holiday read for fans of Below Deck :) Ex Marine Sarah is hired as security on a luxury super yacht. Sarah suffers from PTSD but takes the job as it promises to be an easy task - which it isn't! Wonderfully descriptive, good character development and overall good whodunnit. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the advance copy.
I really enjoyed this book with its fast pace, fear and tension throughout. A good mix of characters from all walks of life, most with various issues from their past. Sarah, an ex-marine had more demons than most and when an apparently simple job of escorting a luxury yacht to its destination came up, she reluctantly agreed and decided to use the trip to get her life back on track. However, as soon became apparent, all was not as it should be on board and as one disaster after another befell them, the voyage became anything but easy. Not knowing who to trust was the most dangerous part as the yacht continued its perilous journey across the stormy Atlantic. An excellent read that had me hooked, with a well thought out storyline that left no questions unanswered. My only slight criticism was the Prologue - I spent most of the book waiting for this part and it would have been much more thrilling had this been omitted or with just a hint of what was to come. I know it didn’t tell anything like the whole story, but for me, it diluted the tension. However, I would love to read more by this talented author.
The book starts by introducing Sarah, an ex-marine, who has a history that made her leave the marines. I liked her as a character as she felt like a strong female lead. She joins the crew of a super yacht as security.
Then the boat and the crew are introduced. This got confusing as a lot of characters were introduced quickly. The boat set sails and it is one disaster after another; first with the boat and then with the crew. This does seem slightly far-fetched due to the number of disasters that occur. The plot twist at the end is good - something different. The baddie can be guessed with the clues in the book.
The description of the boat is good and I liked the writing style. This is an easy read and an OK thriller. Just don't read it on a boat as it will get you worried with everything that could go wrong!
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A Stranger On Board took me a few chapters to get into, but once I was invested into the story I had to keep reading. I loved the premsie and the story backdrop. Being on a Yacht with no way out of the situation really added some tension into an already exciting plot. Overall a good solid read.
Although the writing was well executed, this book just wasn't for me unfortunately. I felt uncomfortable reading it because the great chip on the lead character's shoulder kept getting in the way. I wanted to read about a strong female hero but it just didn't come across that way to me. I also felt that there was far too much forelock tugging descriptions about the wealth of the owners and the opulence of the boat. Although it just wasn't for me, I know that others have really enjoyed this book, so I guess it just goes to show that it just you can't please everyone!
A Stranger on Board follows Sarah, an ex marine suffering from PTSD. She’s employed by an ex-colleague as marine security liaison and her job is to board a luxury super yacht as it is transported from the UK to the Caribbean. What could go wrong? Well it’s seems quite a lot! When one of the passengers goes missing, Sarah discovers there’s a killer on board and her priority is to unmask them and protect the crew but first she needs to identify the killer. This task is made all the more difficult as they head into a massive storm and run into issues with the boat.
I did enjoy this book but found it took quite a while to get into it. The bindis set the scene well and you could almost feel the claustrophobia setting in. There were plenty of characters all with their complexities and whilst predictable in places and slightly too long I did want to keep reading to see how the book concluded. Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Michael Joseph UK and the author for the chance to review.
A good fast paced thriller which kept me turning the pages. Lovely to be on board a luxury yacht but not with the finger being pointed at everyone. The main protagonist is a great character.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for ARC in return for an honest review.
Looking after security for a luxury boat should be easy, until things start going wrong. A tense and thrilling read.
Sorry, this was a DNF at 50%. I found the main character annoying. She was written in a condescending, weak way, which didn’t fit with the remit of the book. She was too fluffy, definitely not marine- like! I would say a typical way a male author would interpret a female ex-marine. A shame as I had high hopes for this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Another binge worthy thriller. This reminded me of 'The woman in cabin 10' and makes for a great holiday read. The premise isn't the most original but this book is still well worth a read.
This book would make an amazing film or netflix series!!
We could have a bit more romance in there for good measure
I like the sense of desolation, rising fear, things going missing, rations getting thinner. This all gives an excellently tense backdrop to a unique story upon a superyacht and without giving too much away what could and does go wrong.
Really enjoyed this book and would like a sequel
Huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book.
Ex-marine Sarah French joins a luxury superyacht as on-board security, she's excited to get her life and career back on track. Surrounded by crystal waters, it seems like the perfect place to start over. As they head into open water, though, tensions between the crew quickly build. And when someone goes missing, Sarah has a terrifying realisation. One of them is a killer. All of them are suspects.
I do love a good thriller and although this book wasn’t quite what I expected, I mostly enjoyed it. It’s well paced and I really liked Sarah as a character, I loved the inclusion of PTSD rep and I found her back story super intriguing! Death in paradise is such a great thriller trope and one of my favourites so I loved this element of the book.
I do think it was a bit too long, I personally prefer my books to be between 300-350 pages which is my sweet spot but that’s just my personal preference. I also found that there aren't that many characters so it wasn't too difficult to work out who the culprit was but it’s still a good read (particularly a good poolside read) and I’d recommend to thriller fans!
This was not what I expected - not glamourous - more of a horror story, but very gripping and the protagonist was fantastic. enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this book, read a majority of it in one setting. Fast paced high seas thriller. And though I guessed the plot midway through it did not take away at all from the pleasure of reading this novel.
The book is well written and gives the impression that the author is well versed in Naval and boats and general.
The main protagonist is a kick ass female ex- marine who is a complex but likeable character who has a form of PTSD. There are a range of colourful characters from all over the globe, as you would find in the world of luxury yachting.
I will definitely give Red Ops a go, his other book as a I think this will also be a fast paced winner!
A book of three thirds, two of which (beginning and end) were gripping, one of which (if you hadn't guessed - the middle) was somewhat pedestrian.
The main storyline follows a security guard onboard a multi-million dollar yacht taking its maiden voyage across the Atlantic ocean.
As the plot progresses, the ship suffers mechanical challenges with all not being as it seems with the rest of the crew.
The story is a unique idea that works on paper; however, for me, the way it all ended was farfetched and disappointing.
That being said, I would be very interested in not only reading the sequel but interested in watching any Hollywood film that could piggyback off the back of it.
For these reasons it was worthy of a four-star review (rather than three).
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Penguin Michael Joseph UK for an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Cameron and NetGalley for allowing me to read A Stranger on Board before the publication date.
Ex Royal Marine Sarah French is living with PTSD and panic attacks following her experiences during her last tour of duty.
Mitch, an ex Royal Marine has started a security company providing military trained personnel. A new client asks for a security detail to accompany the superyacht, Escape, from Majorca to Antigua where it will undergo the final fit out. Mitch offers the position to Sarah.
No sooner has she arrived on board than the captain announces that they will sail early.
It is not long before she realises that work which should have been completed in Majorca has not been done. There is also secrecy about crates which were brought on board immediately before the yacht sailed.
As Escape heads into the Atlantic, tensions are rising among the skeleton crew.
A storm is forecast but the captain refuses to change route, heading straight into the storm.
When a member of the crew goes missing, Sarah is forced to the conclusion that there is a killer on board.
No longer does Sarah have her forces family to rely on, instead she has to call on all her training and a discordinated crew to save the superyacht and those on board.
This was an unusual book which I thoroughly enjoyed.
A fast paced thriller which was okay but not especially compelling. For me, there wasn’t enough intrigue and variety in the story about a super yacht with someone on board intent on causing trouble and the characters were not particularly interesting to me. It was predictable and forgettable. With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for an advance copy to read and review.
Loved this one. A murderer on board a luxury yacht. Full of twists and turns. Fast paced. A terrific read. Will read more Cameron Ward for sure.
Puts the reader on edge almost from the beginning. What could be more simple, or welcome. A paid job for Sarah, formerly with the military and now taking time to try to recover; recover from the horrors of the war in Afghanistan and the loss of her partner. The job comes via a former colleague: a luxury yacht is to be delivered to the owner after some upgrades. The task for Sarah is simply to sail along as Security; with the minimum crew, she can take time to reflect and recover. She doesn't even have to make friends, just nurse her bruised soul. Well. Best laid plans, and all that.
Another really fun thriller with very classic murder mystery thriller vibes! Definitely gave me the same sort of vibes as The Holiday by T M Logan which I absolutely loved!!
Didn’t warm to the characters too much but the plot itself was pretty good and was an easy and enjoyable read!
