The third book in The Beautiful series did not disappoint.
Unlike the first two books, book three focuses on Arjun and Pippa. Celine and Bastien have disappeared and Pippa is determined to find her friend and make sure she is safe. Her mission finds her following Arjun Desai through a tare into the Sylvan Vale, where she soon discovers that the land of the fae is not safe for a mortal. Forced into an arrangement neither of them was expecting, will Arjun be able to save them both?
I really enjoyed this look at some of the other characters from the series and loved the chemistry between Arjun and Pippa. Celine and Bastien still feature but this book concentrates more on the fae world as opposed to the vampire world.
As with the first two books, the storytelling and world building is fantastically detailed and immersive, and like book two it felt darker and more dangerous.
As with the other books, this does end on a cliffhanger, and I’m intrigued to see what will happen next. I can’t say much more without spoiling the plot but definitely one for fans of fantasy, faeries and intrigue!
Renee has not disappointed with this instalment of her vampire series!! I find myself lost in this world and never wanting to return to the real world. Thank you for writing such a superb book
As expected, this book was absolutely beautiful and did not disappoint. The imagery, the language, the characters; everything is so well written and creates such a depth that is unique and utterly fascinating. I’m so grateful and honoured to have received an arc and cannot wait for other people to read it too!
I have decided after rereading the last third of the 2nd book to not continue this series. I wasn't sure about it but have decided that it isn't for me. There is nothing necessarily wrong with the series, just isn't for me.
I rarely do this, so apologies to the publisher for not reviewing this one.
I was up and down with the series in the previous two books but generally enjoyed it. This one lost me somewhat. I would put it down for days and then plod on. I think I’m just not the target audience for this author anymore. No doubt if you loved her previous books, this one will be equally enthralling.
There is a change in POVs we are following Pippa, who is searching for Celine and Arjun, who is looking for a healer for Odette for half of this book and we go from New Orleans through the veil to Fairyland, A big choice to make by the writer but it was refreshing to get to know the side characters but this isn't as plot driven as the first two books, we do get back on track but by then it's nearly and over but the end is definitely worth waiting for!
I loved The Beautiful - it was a 5 star read when I read it a few years ago! Unfortunately the rest of the series just hasn't lived up to its strong opening, at least to me.
I liked that the focus had switched to Arjun and Pippa for this book - but partly because I was a little bored by the end of The Damned. The settings and world building are still incredible, but the plot just felt quite stilted and nothing really resonated with me. I'm vaguely interested in knowing how the series ends, but probably ly not enough to rush for the last book.
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
So, I'm a big fan of this series, but I wasn't huge on the focus of this book - Arjun and Pippa aren't my favourite characters in the world, but I still enjoyed the book.
The incredibly enthralling and hotly anticipated third book of Renée Ahdieh’s utterly decadent historical YA Fantasy series is just so addictive. I was hooked from the very first page and literally couldn’t put it down.
Odette is on her deathbed and The Court of the Lions have done everything they can. Now, only a healer from the Sylvan Vale can save her and Arjun Desai (a half fey) is the only one able to cross the boundary between realms. He despises his former home, but knowing it’s the only way to save Odette leads him to return and leaving a mirrored tare open between worlds.
It’s only days until Pippa Montrose is to wed Phoebus Devereux, becoming a member of his well respected family and offering her the salvation she desires. But Celine is missing, Pippa is certain she’s with Bastien Saint Germain and beloved Arjun can lead her to them.
With the help of Eloise (daughter of a powerful sorceress) Pippa discovers the gateway and slips through in search of her friend. But what she finds is a world of danger, duplicity and magic she doesn’t quite understand.
This was soo incredibly spellbinding, I loved every single second of it! Unlike the previous books, The Righteous focuses more on some of the supporting characters like Pippa, Eloise and Arjun and I really enjoyed reading from their POVs.
All the characters were well written but I absolutely loved Pippa and Arjun, the swoon-worthy chemistry between them was simply incredible (I’ve actually been waiting for them to spend more time together since first meeting in The Beautiful.) I’m surprised to be saying this but they’ve surpassed my Bastien and Celine as my favourite couple, which I never thought possible.
I’m also pleased to report the world building is even more deliciously detailed than in the previous books. We get to explore the Sylvan Vale (and it’s inhabitants) like never before, which was truly fascinating and definitely added more depth both to the world and to the characters who reside in it.
There’s not much else I can say without spoiling the entire plot but I definitely recommend to fans of Paranormal or YA Fantasy—trust me you’re going to love this series!
Thanks to Hodder&Stoughton and Netgalley for the e-arc.
I adored The Beautiful, but ended up thinking The Damned was a bit of a disappointment. However, I was still intrigued enough to give The Righteous a chance.
Admittedly, I was caught off guard when the focus was on Pippa and Arjun. Additionally, I could barely remember anything from the end of the second book, so I was slightly lost as I tried to remember why Celine and Sebastien were 'missing' and what had happened to Odette. Truly, this really impacted my enjoyment. It wasn't until quite a long way into the book that the author made reference to what happened to Sebastien's sister and uncle, and why Sebastien became a vampire. Personally, I'd have preferred the author recapped this much, much earlier on; I was slightly disengaged from the story until this recap. I was also surprised when suddenly Celine and Sebastien's POVs appeared 50% of the way through the book (although this was when I started to remember what had happened).
Overall, the book felt disjointed and a little boring. It definitely seems as if the next book will be more exciting, since we were left with so many hanging threads, but I'm still not sure if I'll want to read it. I loved the first book so much that it might be enough to sway me - a foolish hope that the narrative will pick up again - but after two disappointing books I'm not so sure.
I have now picked up my brain cells that this BRILLIANT book scattered.
First of all, a kind thank you to the publisher who granted me an e-ARC of this book. I never in a million years thought I'd get this.
I have loved this series for so long, and you get this attached to a series, you're almost afraid to read the next book. I felt this deeply when I learned that The Righteous would be mostly in Pipa's and Arjun's povs. Arjun was one of my favorite side-characters in the first two books, but I loved Bastien so much that I didn't know how it would work. But HOLY MOLY.
I repeat. HOLY. MOLY.
Let's take it step by step. Our new main character duo!
I will follow Arjun to the Vale and beyond. Seriously. Someone tries to hurt my boy, and I'll hunt them down. I can honestly say that Arjun is one of all-time favorite characters, alongside Bastien and Magnus Bane. Arjun isn't as flashy as Magnus but they both have this coping mechanism of hiding their pain and traumas with wit and indifference (that isn't as real as they pretend to). Arjun is also as smart and resourceful as Bastien is, but when Bastien commands the scene almost by attacking it, Arjun takes the reins from afar in the "I know I'm awesome and I'm happy from my place of honor over here". I truly, truly, TRULY LOVED ARJUN.
And Pipa, this girl is an inspiration. It's not that she discovered herself in this book. She was always brave, good, and endearing. It was that she embraced who she is and what she wants. She can a little frustrating (haha) but she's so endearing, likeable, and RELATABLE. Celine is a brazen character, but Pipa is as strong and wonderful main character as Celine. Reading her pov was like a breath of fresh air. It was a beauty to finally see a character like Pipa as the main lead. I think Pipa is more nuanced than Celine, in fact.
Plot
I'm usually very good at predicting what was going to happen, but in this case, I just lay back in my bed and enjoyed the wild ride through the Vale. The pacing is the same characteristic pacing from the first two books, and even though at times, it slowed down, I enjoyed the characters and the world too much to care. I can read ten books set in this universe, and it won't get old.
Worldbuilding
Mind-blowing. Ethereal as Arjun. (See what I did there?)
For those who are interested in povs, The Righteous includes povs by Arjun and Pipa (mostly), Bastien (some, thank goodness), Celine, Michael, and Emilie (few).
Overall, I believe The Righteous is brilliantly crafted, from the characters down to the narrative messages the author has included. The author conveyed those messages in such a superb, elegant, and succinct way. She tackled colonialism and misogyny, tore them down, and spit them out.
One of my favorite series, and one perfect sequel that is like no other. Cannot wait for the fourth and last book.
I really enjoyed the righteous, and the damned by renée Ahdier. But I didn't enjoy this one as much. Still a wonderfully written book, just not enough solid plot for me
I wasn’t aware that this was gonna focus on Pippa and Arjun, but emotionally I’m not upset at all. I loved being in their POV and seeing them interact with each other.
This was an enjoyable quick and easy read, I didnt know it was part of a series and I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books, my fault completely so I am definitely going to be looking for the others but overall I enjoyed it.
