This was my first time reading a book from the author but I am delighted to say I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I look forward to reading more books from the writer in the future
Like an old friend no matter how long it’s been since reading a Veronica Henry novel, once I start reading it’ll feel like I’ve never been away. Another great read.
Veronica Henry’s heart-warming and feel-good stories never fail to draw me in. Her description of the setting takes you there and introduces you to more of the residents in the Devonshire village of Rushbrook. With each book a community is built, and I found myself rooting for Cherry, Maggie, Rose, and their families. The story was a gentle reminder that life can be what you make it, there’ll be change and to never give up. For me Veronica’s books are page turners, uplifting and leave me craving the next novel. Perfect, relaxing, and cosy escapism. Many thanks to Veronica Henry, her publishers and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Witty, emotional and absolutely wonderful, lose yourself in Veronica Henry’s magical new novel, The Impulse Purchase.
The bond between Cherry, Maggie and Rose has always been strong. Despite the difference in age between mother, daughter and granddaughter, the three of them have always been there for one another through the good times and the bad. When Cherry impulsively purchases a pub in the village she had grown up in, Maggie and Rose are keen to get involved and they all pack their bags and head over to Rushbrook in Somerset to take over The Swan and restore it to its former glory. The three women are each assigned a role: Cherry is front of house while Maggie is in charge of the kitchen and Rose takes control of the garden.
As new life is breathed into The Swan, the locals are absolutely delighted and the pub once again takes centre stage at the heart of the community. The bar is not just a cheerful place to have a drink and a natter, but a safe haven to restore one’s spirits and find a shoulder to cry on and a good friend willing to listen and dispense advice if needed. Cherry’s impulse purchase has changed her family’s lives, but will it also provide them with the happiness they seek?
Veronica Henry’s The Impulse Purchase is a beautifully written and heart-warming story about family, community, friendship and the ties that bind us together that cannot fail to raise the spirits and brighten up your day. Cherry, Maggie and Rose are three extraordinary, multi-layered and brilliantly drawn characters we can all relate to and cheer for.
Uplifting, engrossing and absolutely delightful, Veronica Henry’s The Impulse Purchase is a gorgeous page-turner you will want to tell your all your friends and family about!

The Impulse Purchase ‘The Impulse Purchase’ is the latest by Veronica Henry.
Cherry, Maggie and Rose are mother, daughter and granddaughter, each with their own hopes, dreams and even sorrows. They have always been close, so when, in a moment of impulse, Cherry buys a gorgeous but rundown pub in the village she grew up in, it soon becomes a family affair. All three women uproot themselves and move to Rushbrook, deep in the heart of Somerset, to take over The Swan and restore it to its former glory. Cherry is at the helm, Maggie is in charge of the kitchen, and Rose tends the picturesque garden that leads down to the river. Before long, the locals are delighted to find the beating heart of the village is back, bringing all kinds of surprises through the door. Could Cherry’s impulse purchase change all their lives – and bring everyone the happiness they’re searching for?
Lead by a strong female cast, ‘The Impulse Purchase’ is a lovely strong of three generations of women starting over in a small village whilst bringing hope and opportunities to others.
When celebrating her husband’s 70th birthday, Cherry is overcome with the need to do something for herself for a change and not for others and using the money left to her by her mother, she invests in the derelict pub in her childhood town. Her husband thinks it’s a ridiculous idea but she’s determined to prove him wrong so with the help of her daughter Maggie and granddaughter Rose, she’s going to be turn The Swan back into the bustling hive of activity that she once remembered.
I loved the women in this story, they were strong, determined independent all out to prove their capabilities. The 3 generations made for lovely reading with their close bond and how the women look after each other during the hard times, united in grief after the loss of Frank, Maggie’s husband. Rose has never gotten over her father’s death and is anxious about the future for her little girl and family. She invests her time with helping others, people with addictions and sometimes finds it hard to separate her job from her life.
The story is also seen from the perspective of 2 other people in the village, teenager Chloe who’s holding her family together due to her mother’s own addiction and Russell, the local farmer who’s supplying food to the pub, who’s also adapting to life and loss and finds himself warming to the newcomers, especially Maggie.
Beautifully written and packed with heart, this story was a joy to read from the start. Packed with charm, relatable characters and scenarios, ‘The Impulse Purchase’ is a story about friendship, start-overs and and there’s always some logic behind impulse buys.
You can buy ‘The Impulse Purchase’ from Amazon and is available to buy from good bookshops.
An absolute joy to read! Comparable to sitting down with richest chocolate pudding, sk sumptuous and gratifying. Heart warming, romantic and full of positive affirmation. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are truly forces of nature and Rushbrooke is somewhere I would love to visit! Highly recommended read.
Thank you Netgalley
The Impulse Purchase by @veronicahenryauthor another NetGalley read. Cherry, Maggie and Rose, are Mother, daughter and granddaughter. These three women are a force to be reckoned with and each have their own hope and dreams and are all going through some tough things. One impulse buy by Cherry changes everything and it’s not always an easy ride to get to where they want. I really liked this book, about 3 generations of woman, woman that are at different stages in their life’s but never the less are strong and determined woman, woman that have this amazing unbreakable relationship. Through their strength and determination they are inspirations to others. These three woman are head strong, they feel with every bit of their hearts and yet while they maybe struggling with stuff in their own life’s they are there for others without question. I loved that they cared about the history of their family, about where they came from and about the ones they lost, like the home Cherry was brought up in and the memories that evokes. They cared about keeping those memories alive, Cherry having her fathers fishing box and plans her mother made of the garden, these memories being passed from generation to generation. There so much that I loved about this book that I could waffle on for ages, reading about these three woman as the book went on it was like they were people you knew, became almost like friends that you wanted to see succeed. I admired them for facing the fear of new things head on, with such gusto, belief and determination, even though the fear of it all failing was always there. Not only do these 3 woman stand alone so elegantly with such strength, it would be wrong of me not to mention the beautiful setting this book is written around. The way the author describes Rushbrook, instantly builds an image on your head so perfectly that you can imagine yourself sat my the river of a summer evening, I felt that I knew this place almost and had visited it. I’ve been a fan of the authors for sometime & in fact have a TBR of her books. Weather you are new to this authors books or a fan already this book won’t be a disappointment and I will definitely be recommending to all.
If only life really as about following your dreams. For Cherry as she watches the great and good celebrate the retirement of her husband, photographer, turned university professor she witnesses something that rocks those dreams.
Returning to Rushbrook to finalise the selling of her late mother’s house – on impulse Cherry buys the local pub.
Cherry is not the only one following her dreams, her daughter Maggie is still grieving for husband and his death has left a huge hole in her life. With her experience in PR suddenly not required by her regular clients thanks to a better offer, on impulse Maggie throws everything and follows her mother to Rushbrook and wants to spend the time in the kitchen of this pub to realise her own dreams and go back to her roots.
Rose has lost her dreams, the death of her father, the loss of her grandmother and being a young mother is perhaps not the life she envisaged. She is struggling mentally, but wants to do right by everyone. When on impulse she does the wrong thing at a local drop in centre. She runs to Rushbrook to be with her mother and grandmother.
Three women at very different points in their lives, are all thrown together to get the village pub at Rushbrook back up and running. At the same time to get their own lives back up an running.
Told from all the points of view of the main female protagonists, this book is if anything a glorious celebration of women being able to achieve anything no matter what life decides to put in their way. A sense of determination exudes off the pages and I was swept a long with all of the characters both the main ones and the cast of supporters as well. I felt particularly for Chloe whose life was at the point of going down a very different path.
We are swept into the village, the descriptions of the rundown pub and its makeover, the garden, the surrounding areas. The descriptions of the food had my mouth-watering and I could hear the sound and the smell of the pigs as a local farmer who is living up to his own impulse purchases embraces village life and the new owners of the pub as well.
There was something about this book which moved me, reminded me how strong a single female can be and that determination and a bit of old fashioned hard work can get you anywhere and that whatever path you choose, its always the right one for you at that time. It may be that all impulses are for a reason.
And for that reason I implore you to make your own impulse purchase and buy this book – you will not be disappointed.
I love anything written by Veronical Henry, light, lovely settings, quintessentially very english. I tend to listen whilst walking and will keep walking to keep listening, A must read for an escape from every day life and the horrific news.
The Impulse Purchase has the feel-good factor throughout and is a lovely escape.
From the first pages, I have good feelings about this book, so immediately want to read on. The family has 3 main strong women within it: Cherry is the mother of Maggie and grandmother to 22 year old Rose.
Cherry is in the business of seeing properties that need renovating and flipping them into profit. She has long time partner - Mike, on the cusp of retirement.
Maggie is a successful PR woman, specialising in promoting food.
Rose is a student, also on the cusp of looking for a job as she tries to navigate life and her mental health issues and grief from losing her dad.
It starts with the organising of Mike's retirement party as he got set to depart from his work at the university, and this is when readers first meet Cherry, who has an interesting and different outlook on such parties, but she wants it to be perfect for him. Things change however, when Anneka appears in his life...
There are many changes and challenges within the family; a family home up for sale, grief, new job, studies, moving onwards in the childcare chain. Within each challenge, there is also a certain amount of resilience, which is a joy to see. There are of course, chinks in their armour, but that's what makes them human, but they keep trying to forge new paths ahead. It's just what people need to be reading about today.
There's an impulsive purchase, not a new dress or a book or anything like that. This impulse purchase is a pub called The Swan. It's made when Cherry is selling her parents home and she recalls having many a happy time there. There's a lot of work to be done, but nothing that this family cannot handle in what is a heartwarming story as they set off to work, calling in builders Cherry has worked with before and pulling together to do extensive work to revitalise the pub. It's a joy to watch the idyllic scenery pass by and to see the family work together to create something great for the village.
Interweaved amongst the main family story are other characters, such as Chloe, where the pub gives her new hope in life and Winnie who the pub gives new work prospects to and a future in the pub's kitchen.
There's good food, cast of characters, wildlife and so much more. This book most definitely has the feel-good factor. It's lovely to escape into and is joyous to read.
It really brings a smile to my face to have discovered author Veronica Henry and her books. I've always loved finding new authors but this one is a little different..
I'm not sure exactly why but I felt a huge comfort reading The Impulse Purchase.
Almost like, I've discovered this wonderful secret.
We meet the most gorgeous characters in Cherry, Maggie & Rose.
There is this infectiousness within these three ladies that makes you long to be their friends.
I will admit it took me a couple of chapters to get into the their stories but once I did, I became engrossed..
I loved these ladies and how their lives intertwined.
Almost like how families should be...
These multigenerational characters so comfortable with each other, so ready to help each other out. I loved it...
Cherry is married to Mike. Mike is due to retire shortly and has these ideas of travelling, seeing a little of the world and spending time together.
An overheard conversation one evening shifts something in Cherry that sets her on a path a little different to her husband.
Daughter Maggie is trying to find her feet after the death of her husband. Her business suffers a setback and gives Maggie the opportunity to move in a different direction to what she had planned.
Granddaughter Rose has her struggles and while Cherry & Maggie are mindful of this, Rose must go at her own pace..
I simply adored how the story unfolded through the eyes of three generations of a family.
Quite rare to see but to be cherished when it does..
Each of these women so different with their ideas, their life experiences and their enthusiasm..
A beautiful read that I am thrilled came across my path and it is so well worth your time.
My mum in law loves to read so I think I am going to share this beautiful book with her next time I go to visit. I'm sure she will love it.
I don’t think Veronica Henry ever disappoints. I have to admit that this took me about 70 pages to actually get into this book. Once it got flowing though, it was fabulous!
This latest book is told by the three main characters. It’s a tale of relationships, trust, grief and family bonding. These three strong women were each fabulous on their own, together they are a force of nature. As each of their stories unfold, I became more invested in them. I adored them all and was rooting for their new venture to be a huge success.
“Haven’t you learnt that there is nothing more exciting, more invigorating, more life-affirming, then an impulse purchase?”
I really liked this quirky and unique novel. I admired the story itself; gentle and most beautifully told with richly drawn and diverse characters. As the story goes on we learn more about each of the women and what their dreams are. I feel as though every reader of this book will be able to relate to one of the women. You can never imagine how quickly your life can change, so it is best to grab the bull by it’s horns and go for it as you never know what is around the corner.
A lovely pure escapism story and a joy to read.
Haven’t we all made an Impulse purchase ok maybe not a pub like Cherry does but it’s such a good idea for a book. When the 3 women in her family Cherry her daughter Maggie and her granddaughter Rose accompanied by Rose’s daughter Gertie move into the Swan pub to turn it back into the heart of the village they don’t realise how it’s going to change all their lives. Such a lovely read that just makes you feel great when you’ve finished it.
I chose to read THE IMPULSE PURCHASE with my Aunt, but I would have loved to read it with my mum. The characters of Maggy, Cherry and Rose are inspiring multigenerational characters and the book got me thinking about the people I value in my life such as my Aunt and my Mum.
I have to say that I was always quite jealous of my friends when they had time to spend with their grandparents; sadly I never had this opportunity. But possibly that’s why I loved this story so much; how the three generations of women are so close and they had the chance to build something together, not only as a family but as friends.
As you can imagine, neither of the main characters have a happy beginning, Cherry, Maggie and Rose have their own problems. But when they decide to move to Rushbrook and transform “The Swan” I am sure they didn’t expect it to change their lives forever, for good or bad… But, the good thing between these three women is the trust and friendship they share, of course they will not agree with everything and maybe this adventure will not have a happy ending. But they will try it and this will make them stronger as a person and as a family.
This had been an amazing read, it was impossible to not feel connected with the story or the characters and want them to have their dreams come true. Of course, the path is not easy, but sometimes, having someone on your side makes you stronger than you ever thought.
I highly recommend you to read “The Impulse Purchase” . It’s an astonishing story, believe me.
A lovely book, easy to read with nice characters. Three generations coming together and building something for a community.
A beautiful story showcasing strong independent woman helping eachother and others to build a better future.
Set in a romantic little town.
This was a lovely light , feel good book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a lovely easy to read story of three generations of women, each with their own problems and how they find themselves through grandmother Cherry's impulse purchase of a run down pub in the village she grew up in.
Cherry's life partner Mike is about to retire, and after a lifetime of supporting others Cherry isn't sure she wants to continue in the same way. Daughter Maggie lost husband Frank four years back, her PR business is under threat and she doesn't even realise she needs a change. And 22 year old Rose, mum to Gertie, 3, is still coping with mental health issues after her fathers death when she was 17.
Their combined efforts to tansform the Swan give them all a start to the new life they need in a lovely rural setting with a cast of lovely characters.
This is an absolutely wonderful book. Having read some of Veronica Henry's work in the past I expected a good read but I was blown away.
Strong, inspirational female characters, new starts and hope for the future. Plus a wonderful setting.
This ticked all the boxes for me. Read and enjoy!
Another exquisite read from a fabulous author. A tale of 3 Generations of incredible women working as a team to turn around a village pub. Wow ladies and gentlemen! This is definitely one that shouldn't be missed!
Sometimes you have to let your heart rule your head . . .
This story introduces us to Cherry, Maggie and Rose, three generations; mother, daughter and granddaughter, a close knit family who, since the death of Frank, Maggie's husband and Rose's dad, have been living together at Admiral House in Avonminster, Cherry and Mike's home, Cherry's mum has also recently passed away and Cherry decides to visit her childhood home in the village of Rushbrook, Somerset one last time before the new owners move in, but she comes away with more than she bargained for after popping into her old local, The Swan, as she impulsively decides to buy it and restore it to its former glory. They all up sticks and move to Rushbrook, leaving Mike behind at the family home, will her rash decision herald new beginnings for them all, or could Cherry come to regret her impulse purchase?
This latest book is told by the three main characters, with little snippets by others too. It's a tale of relationships, trust, grief and family bonding. These three strong women were each fabulous on their own, together they were a force to be reckoned with and, as each of their stories unfolded, I became more invested in them at every turn of the page. I adored them all and was rooting for their new venture to be a huge success. My usual genre is psychological thrillers but every so often I take a break and go for a feel good easy read, and Veronica Henry is one of my go to authors for that type of read, The Impulse Purchase is the epitome of an easy read because you open it's pages and it envelops you in the warmest of hugs from beginning to end, I read this one in less than twenty four hours.
I'd like to thank Orion and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Amazon and Goodreads.
This is a very quaint book and the characters in the book are strong.
Cherry, Maggie & Rose are three generations of the same family. Cherry has just sold her Mother’s house in Rushbrook and on impulse buys the Swan pub in the village. We see the woman all turning the pub back into the pub that it used to be a hub for the community to come to. We see how the woman find themselves coping with their lives and becoming stronger and believing in their relationships.
Would recommend this book.
