This is an enjoyable read from start to finish.. When Cherry buys a pub without checking with anyone in her family and friends things could have gone disastrously wrong but there is a really good feel factor about it. Cherry’s daughter and granddaughter also become involved with the Somerset village where the pub is located This impulse purchase changes their lives for the better and the locals also welcome the upgrade to the pub. There is romance for both Cherry’s daughter and even her granddaughter in the village too. There is a brilliant group of characters in the countryside story as well. This village setting makes you want to move there too. There is humour too in this story and it is beautifully told. This is an escape from everyday life. There is romance and this is a fun read that is full of hope for the family we get to know. Veronica Henry always delivers a beautiful and hopeful story and this doesn’t disappoint. This is Henry at her best.
This story is about three generations of women who are at different stages in their lives and have different emotions.
It is set in a village called Rushbrooke.
Cherry is the eldest at 70, who's daughter is Maggie and her daughter is Rose. After cherry's mother recently dies she sells the ancestral home making a nice little nest egg.
Whilst visiting the little businesses in the village one Monday morning she discovers the local pub The Swan is up for sale, as she started work here as a teenager and spent most of her time drinking here she feels a fondness for it. It has been left to run down and nobody goes there anymore. It used to be the heart of the village, full to bursting most nights and lovely locally reared and grown food being used within its meals. On impulse, Cherry decides to buy the pub. Her partner Mike is not impressed and it makes a thorn between their long-term relationship.
Cherry has a vision and with her daughter and grandaughter on board she is set to reinvent the pub.
Will it be a success or a flop?
I loved this story, it was so easy to follow and had a nice warm feel to it just what I needed to cosy down to after a busy Christmas. The characters were pleasant and it all fitted together so well.
A great book.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this lovely book. xx
I know I'm rather partial to an occasional impulse purchase, but I have to say I've never bought a pub on an impulse.
And while most people could also say that, Cherry can't as it is her impulsiveness to buy a pub in her home village that really kick starts this book.
And I loved how it was three generation of women taking over the pub, Cherry who is going through a blip with Mike, Maggie, her daughter who is still grieving the loss of her husband, Rose, the granddaughter who is suffering from anxiety and in addition Rose's daughter who is adorable but too young to have a role in the pub.
I loved the chapters from their points of view, in addition to an occasional other chapter from Chloe and a few others.
These are strong independent women who are working together to create a real community pub, and I loved seeing how their lives all change as a result of it.
I felt as though I was there in Rushbrook alongside the women, and at the pub itself. I really enjoyed every moment of this book, and would love to return to this setting in the future.
Thank you to Orion and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I love Veronica Henry's work and this was no exception. I read it in one sitting it was a quick easy read that had her usual mix of humour and lightheartedness. Great writing, great storyline and great characters. I loved it.
Another triumph from Veronica Henry!!
Cute old fashioned pub the grandmother purchases on an impulse and her daughter and granddaughter get involved.
I love Ronnie's books but this one is probably now my favourite!
I reviewed The Impulse Purchase for LoveReading.co.uk. I have chosen the book as a Liz Robinson Pick of the Month for February and a LoveReading Star Book.
After an overload of dark fiction recently, I felt in desperate need for something more lighthearted, entertaining and heartwarming, and Veronica Henry delivered with the story of a family, 3 generations of women, all of whom find themselves at a crossroads, with their own issues, worries, needs and hopes. Cherry finds herself thrown off course by an incident at her long term partner, Mike's retirement party, a professor of art at Avonminster University, and has not got over losing her mother, Catherine. Her daughter, Maggie, is still grieving the loss of Frank, unable to come to terms with this, facing challenges to her PR consultancy business, and her daughter Rose has serious anxiety issues that were exacerbated with the loss of her beloved father, although her young daughter, Gertie has helped to stabilise her.
Cherry is overseeing the sale of her parents home in Rushbrook in Somerset, and visits The Swan pub which had been a part of her life as long as she can remember, she even worked there as a barmaid when she was younger. The Swan is in a terrible state and on the verge of being sold to a developer, she cannot bear the thought of this. She buys it on impulse, with the intention of renovating the premises and reopening it as pub serving as central hub to the local community. Maggie takes on the food, kitchen and PR aspects and Rose works hard to bring the neglected gardens that go down to the river up to scratch. Mike refuses to get on board with Cherry's project, unhappy at not being consulted and concerned it could fail and lose them money. The pub is renamed the Three Swans, a reference to the 3 women, as they hire local staff, getting involved with the community, will they be able to make a success of their new venture?
Henry creates characters that you cannot help but adore, fans of Henry will recognise the return of characters from some of her previous books here. The family bonds between Cherry, Maggie and Rose are strong, they will do whatever they need to do to support each other, and The Three Swans and the village of Rushbrook turns out to be just what Maggie and Rose need to help them move on in their lives. This is a wonderfully relaxing read to be immersed in, I loved the three women and the Rushbrook community, especially Chloe, pig farmer Russell, and Amanda. A perfect feel good and escapist read. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.
This is the first book I've read by Veronica and I really enjoyed it. Fell in love with the characters from the very beginning and couldn't put the book down as I was so keen to find out what was going to happen next. Highly recommended
I absolutely loved this book. Generations of incredible women working as a team to turn around a village pub. Those who live rurally know how dependent a community is on a space for them to be together and celebrate- Cherry’s impulse purchase was vital for the village but also turned out to be life changing for all of the women in the family. I loved the complexities of all of their characters- Maggie and Rose were just as interesting as Cherry and it was amazing to see them bloom in Rushbrook. I genuinely enjoyed every page and I’ve added Veronica Henry to my favourite author’s list. Would absolutely recommend.
Another fantastic book from Veronica Henry as always. A lovely emotional heart warming story. A great one to curl up with.
This novel follows the lives of 3 generations of women who take on a pub in the village where they once lived.
A heartwarming book where the descriptions are such that you can almost taste the food.
Classic Veronica Henry. Perfectly imperfect characters, no surprises but as ever, a safe pair of hands for the romantic genre.
You know you are in for a good read with a Veronica Henry book. A heart-felt story of three women trying to change their lives. Emotional and totally well written and enjoyable
The Impulse Purchase is another wonderful, heartwarming, and sometimes emotional read by Veronica Henry. The story follows three women (a mother, daughter, and granddaughter) who take on a rundown old pub in the village where they grew up. The descriptive language will make you wish you were there with them too.
All three women are likable and relatable, and I love that Veronica doesn’t just write about young characters. She shows their strengths and weaknesses, and although this is fiction there are some very real topics covered such as homelessness and addiction.
I’ve read many books by this author and most of them are five star reads - This one is too! I thoroughly enjoyed The Impulse Purchase, which along with The Beach Hut series, has been one of my favourites.
A good book that was well written. I’ll be reading more books by this author as I couldn’t put it down. Well done.
This book was great fun. It describes the lives and loves of the three women and their endeavours to create new lives for themselves. A book for all ages as the women are grandmother, daughter and granddaughter. It’s been. A while since I last read a book by Veronica Henry and I thin that I will go and search out some more of her titles now.
Oh wow what a brilliant book. I couldn't put it down. Admittedly I was wanting to stamp my feet in frustration over some of the people like chole's mum, so glad she got herself sorted out.
I'm glad it had a happy ending for every character in the story. I want to know more now how they all get on, is Mike's exhibit good, does Rose ace the courses she's doing. Does Maggie live happily ever after.
I actually want to go and sit at the 3 swans and have a glass of something to drink.
Cherry and Mike have been together for nearly fifty years and the book starts as he is about to retire from his post as a lecturer at the University if Avonminster.
Cherry has a eye for interior design and loves to take properties that no-one else will touch, make them beautiful and turn a profit.
Maggie, their daughter is still recovering from the death of her husband, Frank. Equally devastated is Rose, Maggie's daughter who has anxiety issues following her father's death but is a great mum to Gertie her small daughter.
Cherry grew up in Rushbrook, a small Somerset village and the sale of her late parents house is the catalyst for huge changes for all of the females in the family.
Cherry follows her gut and buys the village pub but can she, Maggie and Rose turn the business around in a short space if time and will Mike still be there whatever happens.
This is a story of family, community, love and relationships and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
"The Impulse Purchase" is an enjoyable tale of the lives and loves of three generations of the same family. At the beginning Cherry is planning retirement with her partner, Maggie is running her own PR agency while her daughter Rose is trying to decide what to do with her life as she continues to struggle with the trauma of her father's death. The lives of all 3 women and their families change when Cherry buys the local pub in the village where she grew up.
There is laughter and tears, new relationships and new beginnings.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
A warm, uplifting and optimistic novel filled with glorious food references. So good to see middle-aged and older women depicted in this way - vital, engaged, busy, fun-loving, still having sex, able to do great things. This is a reality we do not see enough in works of fiction
