My thanks to NetGalley and Pan MacMillan for a copy of “ The Interview” for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book and was intrigued to how things would pan out .
It was full of suspense and action , but things seemed to drag on and I’m afraid to say I lost interest,, and skimmed through the latter part of the story.
I really wanted to like the book but on reflection I can only give it an average score.
There are some good interview tips in this book. At the start, anyway, then it turns into the worst interview ever. Some unusual psychometric questions are quickly followed by a disappearing interviewer. Except he hasn't disappeared at all, he is watching as the interviewee tries to get out of a locked room.
This is a fast and tense thriller with few characters. It is written mainly from the first person point of view of the interviewee, with a few chapters from other characters in the third person. However, the attempts to escape from the locked building did go on for a very long time and it is a bit too much.
An original premise and brilliant opening. A great read for those who like 'cat and mouse' type of thrillers.
A good start to this thriller and the premise was interesting. However, the slow pace of the narrative failed to grip me. The ending was a let down and a disappointment.
Nerve-wracking becomes terrifying! No matter how awkward or tense they were, none of the interviews I have attended so far have come anywhere near the horror of this one! Certainly no amount of preparation beforehand could have prepared the main character for what was to arise in her interview.
Ewan’s interviewee arrives for her interview, totally unsuspecting of what is to come. Understandably nervous at the outset, she soon starts to feel more than just a little uncomfortable as the interview progresses.
Although the plot at first seems highly unlikely Ewan’s description and style make this very uncomfortably believable. The tension and fear mounts and the climax is not without its twist.
A definite read for thriller fans.
Thank you to Pan Books (Pan Macmillan) and NetGalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a gripping read to begin with but it fell flat towards the end of the book. I felt the last few chapters were slightly unnecessary as the story dragged a bit. However in saying that it was overall a good book but the ending and the length of the book let it down a bit.
What a mind - this was so addictive and I didn't know what was coming but I had to finish reading it - it was a very late night. I don't know what to say about anything as there will be plot spoilers but everything is teased out and makes sense. A bit made me really sad, understand why but it was a bit tearful.
So recommend this book.
I must find more by this author - what a mind.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
The Interview is a book I would rate at 3.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 4⭐️ for the rating.
Kate Harding is the main character in this book, she has an interview for her dream job at 5pm on a Friday. She arrives and the book turns into an escape room type of adventure as this poor woman initially jumps through hoops answering questions and completing multi choice questions. She then finds herself alone in this office box in the centre of the room and has to escape.
This book was very like a escape room day out for me, the book was very far fetched though it was totally unbelievable by the end. The plot line was a different one but could have done with going somewhere else or something different just to make it a bit more believable. The writing was engaging and did a good job keeping me guessing but the ending was the most unbelievable part unfortunately. I did enjoy reading it and would suggest others to if they like a guessing type of read.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
Really good book. Had you gripped from the beginning and the last quarter I could not turn the pages quick enough. Its crazy to think how easy it is to get dragged into something so crazy when all you thought you were doing was going for an interview. Full of twists and turns.
I have such a problem with this book, as the writing is really good and engaging. I was instantly hooked. Th intrigue kept me on me guessing.
And then we have the ending... Wow that was a dumpster fire. The whole explanation behind MC's husband's death was so ridiculous, so over the top that it literally made me laugh out loud. Like, honestly, it was such an overkill (quite literally) that it instantly made me hate that book.
It is late Friday afternoon when Kate goes for an interview for a job. She thinks she will a good fit & she wants to do well. The building is ultra modern & when she is shown into the area of Edge Communications she is impressed with all the extra things that are provided for the employees. Everything is open plan although there is a glass cube & it is where her interview is to take place. Joel, the good looking man interviewing her seems to have an odd interview technique. He explains that his job is to find the answers behind the answers. She is left alone to fill in the psychometric questionnaire. The questions seem intrusive. She starts to feel uncomfortable & this soon turns to fear as she finds she can't get out & there seems to be no-one around.
This was a real page turner. I really admired Kate's determination as she changed from the somewhat introverted quiet character to the strong determined woman who is going to survive. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
What the heck?! After reading this book, any future interviews I attend must be held in the middle of the day with an armed police escort accompanying me! Really enjoyed this one - a strong 4 stars.
This was one thrilling ride!
I started off absolutely loving it and was desperate to find out what was going on, I found the first half of the book so intriguing. The rest of the book continued to hold my attention although I did find it slightly too detailed in parts which slowed the pace down a bit.
Still, a great book with great characters, really well written, action packed and claustrophobic in parts. I raced through it in a day.
This is the first I’ve read by C.M. Ewan, I’m looking forward to checking out his other books now!
Oh where to start with this one. OK I'm going to go straight in with it. I didn't enjoy it 😕
It's such a slow burn, and by the time it started to reach its climax, I'd already lost interest.
I debated DNF'ing but instead ended up skimming most of the second half of the book. I felt like I had put in so much time with it, I couldn't just put it down, but at the same time I couldn't wait for it to be over.
I seem to be massively in the minority as scrolling through Goodreads there are a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews but unfortunately it just wasn't for me
‘Her dream job? Or a deadly trap … ’ - cover teaser.
My thanks to Pan Macmillan for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Interview’ by C. M. Ewan in exchange for an honest review.
At 17:00 on a Friday Kate Harding arrives for an interview at Edge Communications based on the 13th floor of London’s most recent statement high rise - known as The Mirror.
Kate is impressed by the trendy open plan office with plenty of extra features for its employees, including a climbing wall, a refectory, and even arcade machines. She is ushered into the large glass box located in the middle of the room and introduced to her interviewer, Joel White.
Not going to say more as this is definitely a novel best read ‘cold’ and while it’s quite a mundane start definitely buckle your seatbelt and clear your schedule as this was an intense thriller that I found almost impossible to put down.
The novel for the most part takes place over the course of a single evening with the occasional flashback to earlier events.
Overall, an outstanding workplace thriller that I found both exciting and entertaining.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
A gripping read. This fast paced book held my attention all the way through.
Telling the story through several different points of view, with some flashbacks to fill in the backstory, it mainly covers the nightmare interview that Kate finds herself enduring.
This was a book that kept you on the edge of your seat and it was very hard to predict what would happen next.
Recommended..
I like the books that are fast, with this book you are always on the edge. It was a book that really surprise me andcit happen really rarely. The main characters are great and it is really a good suspance, thriller and mystery with a romance as well.
Thank you Netgalley and Pan Macmillian for this arc copy.
The Interview by C.M. Ewan
Kate Harding is ready to reboot her life. The chance comes with a last-minute interview for a post at Edge Communications, a famous PR company. The interview is set for 5pm on a Friday, not the best of times perhaps, and things don’t start well. She’s late, daunted by the size of this massive new glass building in London, and then finds herself being interviewed by someone other than she expected, the rather charismatic Joel White. The interview takes place in a glass office, high above London’s streets. Joel begins to ask his questions and, as they become increasingly personal, Kate’s anxiety and nerves are transformed into terror.
And that’s pretty much all I want to say about the plot because The Interview is a fabulous, tense stand alone thriller and it shocks time after time as Kate descends further through the circles of hell. If only the people in the streets below would look up! Interviews can be frightening at the best of times and it’s easy to empathise with Kate as she sits in this glass box facing questions from a man who clearly knows far too much about her. But this empathy then becomes mixed up with tension, fear as the thriller takes off and becomes a truly exhilarating read. It’s not often I can say that about a thriller, perhaps once or twice a year.
Much of the novel takes place over a very short period of time, making it all the more urgent and immediate, but as it goes on we have flashbacks, teaching us more about Kate and her interviewer. This adds context to the interview, although my favourite sections were definitely those set in this incredible building, which couldn’t be more fitting for such a horrifying scenario! The fact that everything takes place just out of plain site of a busy London, with office workers pouring out of the surrounding buildings into pubs and bars, adds so much to the tension. I have to add that I really like Kate’s character, her resilience and courage.
if ever a book should be called a page turner, that would be The Interview. It is chilling and intense but more than anything else it is thoroughly entertaining.

A Window Breaks
Wanted to love this but wasn't a big fan:(
I feel like I would have loved the book if it were shorter. It felt like the details went on for too long and throughout half the book I was skimming thru it.
This did feel very claustrophobic and many of the situations felt very heart-pounding. And there were some good twists towards the end but like I said if it had been shorter I might have enjoyed it more.
Kate is trying to rebuild her life after fifteen traumatic months, so when she is contacted by a recruitment agency about a position with Edge Communications, she jumps at the chance of securing this dream job. The interview starts like any other but as time passes it becomes more disturbing, Kate wonders why has she been brought here and what answers is Joel expecting from her? Is this dream role turning into her worst nightmare?
The Interview is told from Kate's perspective and bounces between two timelines. It's a well thought out, fast paced, action packed thriller, capturing the strength and determination that Kate needed to survive her ordeal. At times I had to suspend belief as parts were a little 'out there' but this added to the intrigue of the story and kept me hooked, devouring it in less than 24 hours. If you like a rollercoaster ride of a read, which is, at times, emotional, then this one is for you.
I'd like to thank Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for inviting me to read this, I will post my review on Amazon and Goodreads.
This is the first book I read from this author and I was intrigued by the premise of this book. It’s a very intense and fast paced thriller, with a claustrophobic setting. Unfortunately it was not as gripping as I thought it would be and after a few chapters I didn’t feel motivated to keep reading. Besides that the main character’s continuous failed attempts to scape were not moving the story forward in an exciting way.
