I think The Trivia Night by Ali Lowe had a lot of potential but unfortunately I felt like the writing style let it down quite a bit. The first four chapters were told from different points of view, but it was very difficult to tell the protagonists apart. I didn't like how each chapter ended with something super ominous, which was probably to help build tension but because it kept happening again and again it felt a little ridiculous. Not every chapter needed to end with something like "It was going to be an amazing night!" or "We're out of time so I'll have to discuss this in my next session." It felt very repetitive and took me out of the story.
This was a very quick and easy read but unfortunately it fell very flat.
A thrilling read that really keeps you entertained until the very end. Recommended for anyone who loves a good read.
A novel about people with too much money and not enough sense. And secrets. Lots of secrets and lies. The Sydney setting put this apart from others of this genre. So what really happened on Trivia Night? All will be revealed slowly though both narration, letters and a chat between a character and her therapist. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. Yes it might seem familiar but that doesn't mean it isn't a good read, especially for travel.
This was the perfect beach read . Secrets, scandal and gossip galore . A bunch of not very likeable characters but at the same time they are people you can’t get enough of ! Very much in the style of liane Moriarty and with a great Sydney setting . It’s definitely one to binge in the sun and I’d love to see this on screen !
If you love stories that have all the parent playground gossip / scandal / rivalry ingredients but just wish the author would take it up a notch then this is the one for you! Set in an exclusive town where what you wear, what you say and what you do as the parent is infinitely more important than the activities of the child in the school and then comes The Trivia Night, the biggest social event on the school calendar and for our protagonists on Table 6 the beginning of a life changing series of events that will leave you as the reader unable to stop turning the pages.
The book is written in various styles, one character talks to us, the reader, another in a series of letter and another to their therapist but at no point does this seem clunky, in fact this gives the book and unusual and welcome charm that certainly lifts is above other similar books in this broad genre.
Thrilling, humour filled and more than a little relatable (we have all seen those playground cliques right!) Ali Lowes debut novel is an absolute smash and I cant wait to read more of her work.
Hachette, thankyou for giving us a copy to read and review. 5 stars all the way!
Trivia Night is perfect for fans of Big Little Lies. The plot is addictive and filled with secrets, gossip, and twists galore. The characters are well-developed. Highly recommended!!
A really enjoyed this book, purely because I just could not work out what was going to happen next. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A tense and captivating story of gossip and scandal with plenty of humour and a cast of fascinating characters - perfect for fans for Lianne Moriarty!
Riveting Domestic Noir..
Immersive and riveting domestic noir which is much more than the blurb would have us think. Narration, told from several different perspectives and time lines, is well done and insightful and the plot is populated with a cast of characters, both engaging and credible. A top notch, one sit read which kept this reader glued to the pages from first to last.(Many thanks to NetGalley/ Publisher/ Author)
A delicious tale of how far people will go to stop their lives from being torn apart. After the events of a school fundraising evening some parents take things a bit too far and there is fatal consequences.
This was a solid read and I really enjoyed it. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This put me in mind of Liane Moriarty's story-telling, set around a small-town parent/ teachers group and the chief fundraising event, a quiz night. There are a group of 4 couples on table number 6, two who have known each other for ages, and two who are newcomers to the school and to one another. As the drinks flow, the flirtations and jealousies rise up, things are said and done that can't be undone.
The story is told from multiple female viewpoints, with some chapters written as letters and emails, others as therapy session notes, and others told in a more traditional way, all which helps to keep the story moving quickly.
There were some twists I was half expecting, others that made me gasp out loud, and I was desperate to see how it all resolved itself
This would be a great book to read by the pool or on holiday.
Far too many bland insufferable characters. I can’t name them there were all interchangeable in looks and temperament. The story was easy to follow but just no substance. Do parents really behave like this in Australia or anywhere else apart from these books?. I think I I’m to9 old to try and imagine myself amongst them.
Note to self - don’t request, wish for or buy any more books about school mums.
When one fun night turns into a disaster, decisions made over a few drinks lead to life changing measures and regrets. This book is so gripping that I couldnt have put it down even if I had wanted too, which coincidently I didn’t.
Thank you to netgally for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I did enjoy this book and it kept me guessing along the way. I did feel it had quite a few similarities to Big Little Lies by Lianne Morriarty but it did change as the story progressed. The book follows the events in the lead up.to and after the Darley Heights Trivia night where the actions of 4 women have a dramatic effect on their lives. The story is told from the different view points of these women which made it interesting and there were a few good twists along the way. Definitely an enjoyable book and one I would recommend.
I love this new genre of books-school mum noir? Bit reductive, but I can't think of a better descriptor. It's great that the insidious nature of motherhood, with the hidden toll it takes on women ( white, privileged women, but still women), is being explored in completely relatable ways. This book is perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty, while also not being derivative at all.
School is hard enough to navigate as a student. Unfortunately, with children, one has to navigate all of that all over again! Trivia night explores the fallout of one rather wild night on 4 couples, but it's not just that night-it just brings underlying discontents to a head. How these couples navigate this, and make it through, forms the core of the story. It's very well written, and a quick, compelling read.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. It was an entertaining read and what would be expected for a story based in a suburb of Sydney. Gossip and plotting aplenty with a lot of characters, though told mostly though 3 of them. It was funny in places and well written so it hooked me to the end.
Unfortunately this book didn’t work for me. I found all the protagonists too alike and similar that I couldn’t distinguish between them. The writing is filled with superfluous details on women’s clothes and yoga routines and how hot so and so’s husband is. I just wasn’t engaged. It wasn’t really a thriller. It lacked suspense and momentum.
Oh wow, Ali Lowe, way to knock it out of the park with your debut novel! I had been hearing about Trivia Night everywhere and I was so desperate to get my hands on it! There was much happiness when I finally did and I devoured it straight away.
There was so much to love about this The Trivia Night, with it's Big Little Lie's vibes. As you know I love a book set in my hometown of Sydney so immediately it had that going for it. A domestic drama/thriller about a boozy trivia night at the local primary school, where things get taken further than any of them would imagine. And then the consequences of their actions, not only for them but for those around them. These women were all so different but this night would bond them forever.
As you would expect with a story about women, there is jealousy, backstabbing, gossip, rivalry and so much more. Money was divider here in Darley Heights - some had it, some wanted it. It was emotional as you get to know each woman., and the secrets that they were hiding. While I probably wouldn't want to be friends with them, they all touched my heart at one time or another throughout the story.
I will never look at a Trivia Night the same way again! You can find out what happened on February 22nd.
Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for my advanced copy.
How long does it take to tear someone's life apart?
The Trivia Night written by Ali Lowe is her debut novel. Welcome to Darley Heights Public School. Full of school yard gossip and a lot of backstabbing. This book was fast paced and role in different perspectives from Amanda, Alice, Zoey and Lara. Some are told in emails and some are told by transcript. They all meet each other when Darley Heights puts on a trivia night to raise funds for a new air conditioner for the school hall. Table 6 is definitely the party table, once you start reading it you will definitely know why.
If you are a fan of Big Little Lies by Lianne Moriarty and the tv show Desperate Housewives you will enjoy this read. I loved that it was set in Sydney. It was also an easy book to devour.
Thank you Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for a copy of this book for my honest review.
The Trivia Night by Ali Lowe is great fun with an edge of darkness. Set in the swankier part of Sydney there's intense competition amongst the yummy mummys of Darleigh Heights primary school to showcase their private number plates and the results of their gym and yoga classes during the school run. The school holds a fund-raising trivia night annually that also gives the parents a chance to meet and bond. For the folk on Table 6 the evening is life-changing as "Beautiful people" Luke and Lara Hampson confirm rumours that they're Swingers, the other 3 couples on the table are intrigued,drunk...........and things get decidedly out of hand.
While this is often a laugh out book it also covers a plethora of social problems and personal issues in a sensitive and insightful way without becoming preachy or judgemental. The fallout from the trivia night shenanigans affects each couple in different ways and things hot up when it seems their antics have been observed. It does lag slightly towards the end but a very entertaining read.
