Oh my Gosh!!! This book, I could not stop listening to it! (Audiobook)
AD-GIFTED
tandemcollectiveuk, electricmonkeybooks gifted and chose me to participate in their #agggtmlistenalong
Not only was I sent the audiobook, but the physical copy as well, thank you so much!
This book was so good!
From the fantastic characters, the suspense, the twists and turns that keep you guessing, this book has definitely become one of my favourites.
Pip is a fabulous character, that you can fall in love with so easily. Her determination and strength is perfect for her role within this case and is portrayed great. I loved following along and considering theories and experiencing different suspicions for the outcome.
This book was written so well!
I was highly impressed by the audiobook narration, with its multi cast and sound effects adding to the brilliant experience.
So impressed, I've already started on the sequel.
Really good book for all ages. Follows the story of Pippa as she searches for who killed Andie Bell. She ends up being helped by the accused younger brother who wants to clear his brothers name. It’s a brilliant thriller and isn’t so scary that younger readers can’t read it but it’s also maintains it’s maturity rather than being almost childish like some books can be.
Definitely needed for fans of only murderers in the building. Holly Jackson has done an amazing job in developing well thought out characters who make you route for them while trying to solve the case yourself.
This book is phenomenon.
I'm so glad that I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook for it because the narrators are absolutely amazing, and the format for the interviews was so entertaining! The mystery and investigation into Andie's death honestly had me gripped from the very beginning, and the only thing that prevented me from binge reading this book all in one night was my uni exams 😂🌃
Pippa was such a funny, brave and strong female protagonist, and I loved her dynamic with Ravi so much! They are the ultimate duo for me now. Also, the fact that the story was centred around her EPQ project only peaked my interest all the more, because it reminded me of my own project back in sixth-form (although my topic was no-where as exciting 😅)
Would highly urge you to check this out if you're a fan of:
- entertaining ya thrillers
- academia setting/vibes
- awesome detective duos
- strong female leads
You won't regret it 😉📖
(also let me know if you do, because i'd love to chat about it!)
I can't wait to continue the series soon! Holly Jackson is officially an auto-buy author for me 😌💖
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much to the publishers for providing the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!
Absolutely brilliant book for YA. Loved every second of it and have been recommending to my students.
This story was addictive! I binged this book like a Netflix series!! I loved the main character, Pippa, so much - especially the way her relationship developed with Ravi, another key character in the plot. I haven’t read much YA but the storyline worked really well - everything fit together perfectly and the many twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The way that the story unfolded felt so real - the investigation, the forensics, the interviews - Pip was a real force to be reckoned with! A definite must read from me!
The characters are brilliant in this book, I just loved Pip and Ravi and the determination they both showed investigating the case. I loved how as a listener I was taken along for the ride and with so many twists and turns it kept me on my toes.
I loved the narration for this book, it’s done exceptionally well.
I normally listen to audio books when I’m doing my housework or walking the dog so I usually only get a couple of hours in a day but with AGGGTM I found myself looking for things to do so I could keep on listening and I finished it in record time for me and then went on and bought book 2 and 3.
So if you’re looking for a story that will have you totally and utterly gripped with characters that are realistic and quite relatable the AGGGTM is one I will definitely highly recommend.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is one of the most buzzed about YA books on the internet.
And that's for good reason! Holly Jackson's classic whodunnit mystery thriller is a fantastic take on the genre, with a strong back story, richly developed characters and a twisty plot.
Five years ago 17 year old Andy Bell goes missing. Her boyfriend Sal Singh, is found dead, presumed a suicide. Andy was never found and Sal was pinned for her murder. But Pippa Fitz-Amobi doesn't believe this is true, so under the guise of her Extended Project, she sets out to find the truth.
Our main character Pip is clever, headstrong and determined. She's not without her flaws, diving headfirst into trouble, but her dogged determination to get to the truth and her resourcefulness in the face of danger and threats single her out as a remarkable heroine.
The plot is perfectly pitched - trailing enough clues to keep you guessing without being impossible to work out. There's a true carousel of potential suspects to follow, and someone trying to stop Pip from investigating. It truly followed the format of a classic murder mystery with up to date tech which was seamlessly woven into the book. Jackson doesn't shy away from the tough topics despite this being YA, with plotlines exploring everything from drug use to sexual abuse. There's some very dark moments in this book (not to mention a heartbreaking plot point that I definitely could have done without!) and Jackson establishes high stakes. There are definitely a few trigger warnings for this book so if you want to be prepared, check them out.
While this book is a self-contained story, there is a full series following Pip's mystery solving adventures, and the moment I finished A Good Girl's Guide to Murder I went in search of the sequel.
Not only is this a fantastic book in itself but the narration and production of the audiobook was stellar. The narrators are brilliant at bringing the characters to life, and providing the right sound for the interviews and recordings. It was an absolutely joy to listen to this book and I can't wait to get to the next one!
Synopsis -
17 yr old Pip is an A grade student who decides to complete a project for extra credit. She decides the topic of her project will be to re-investigate the disappearance of 17 yr old Andi Bell, five years earlier. The whole town believes that Andi’s boyfriend, Sal Singh, murdered her before committing suicide; but Pip isn’t so sure…
My Thoughts -
I really loved this! There were so many lines of enquiry for Pip to follow, but it was written in a way where even listening on audio, I was able to keep up and spot little clues (which were often red herrings).
The story twisted and turned all the way until the very end, but without becoming confusing.
AGGGTM is YA and I can see that this would be great for a YA reader, but it definitely great fun for us older readers too!
I particularly loved that the story including Pip having a ‘sidekick’ and that Ravi had his own important reasons for helping. Their relationship was heartwarming - I loved him nicknaming her ‘Sarge’. 🥰
Narration can really make or break an audiobook experience for me, but thankfully I loved Kristin Atherton as Pip.
It was a great production, with different actors used in parts and various sound affects to break up the main narration, production logs and interviews.
I’ve decided to keep with the audiobooks for the rest of the series, as I enjoyed it so much. Book 2 is reserved with Libby 😁
Summing up, I thought this was a perfect YA thriller, which was really enjoyable as an adult reader.
Everything about this production is brilliant! The story, obviously, is excellent. But the way that the audio has been produced really captures the essence of the book. A mixture of diary entries, interviews and narration, it creates a brilliant world that you can really escape into. So in terms of narration and narrator, it really is top notch.
As for the story itself, it is brilliant. Compelling, well laid out mystery that you really want to get to the bottom of. Pip is trying to complete an project for school whi h starts out looking at the media handling of a murder case in her town 5 years ago. But Pip thinks the person accused of the murder, who himself is dead, is innocent. The more people she contacts for the project, the more lies she uncovers. Can this good girl discover the truth behind the case without ruining the lives of the people around her?
This has to be one of my (if not my!) favorite audiobook of the year!
Ever so cleverly done with different #narrators , and wittily written, alternating project entry logs, interview recordings and the main story, this book is simply addictive and you cannot stop reading/listening!
Pip takes you along with her to solve the mystery, peeling layer after layer, uncovering truths about every protagonist, making you question the status of each and every single one of them.. absolutely brilliant!
I laughed, I cried, I gasped, was totally engrossed, it was perfect!
A Good Girls Guide to Murder was a very good read! It follows Pippa Fitz-Amobi as she looks into the murder of Andie Bell and the death of Sal Singh, the person accused of murdering her. Pippa does not believe Sal murdered Andie and Pippa is determined to find out the truth.
The way that this book was narrated was brilliant and unlike other audiobooks I have listened to. There was a mixture of narrators for when Pippa was interviewing people and the sound of the audiobook changed when she was recording things as voice notes.
The as story had me hooked from the first few lines and I raced through it.
I cannot believe I waited so long to read/ listen to this book. It was such a good read and Im very much looking forward to the rest of the series.
I'm not exaggerating when I say that this was the best audiobook I've ever listened to. Setting aside the story for a moment - the production quality alone puts this in a league of its own.
Multiple voice actors present the story, along with sound effects (to depict things like recordings and phonecalls) that are just enough without being distracting. I've listened to some that add unnecessary effects that completely detract from the experience and ruin any immersion into the story, but this team got it just right with AGGGTM.
So that aside, what about the story? For such a simple plot, the presentation along with the strong connection that's built with our two MCs makes this a gripping read. They're relatable and realistic, and if it wasn't for the VERY highschool setting of the whole debacle it would be easy to forget this is a YA. And by that I mean... things haven't been made unnecessarily fluffy and censored as can sometimes happen with mysteries aimed at teens. I really appreciate that, and it was pulled off wonderfully.
I had book 2 reserved with BorrowBox about 4 chapters in, so I'll be looking forward to carrying on as soon as it's available.
O…M…G. This book shocked me, gripped me, entranced me, made me shout, laugh, and cry all at once. I’ve never had that from a YA before. Especially not a murder mystery novel.
The story took so many unexpected turns and kept me guessing right from the beginning what happened and who was responsible. Every time we thought we’d found a new lead, more suspects popped up and made me suspicious of everyone.
I loved creating my own murder board along the way and found it such a thrilling experience. The story was so well thought out I’m honestly amazed it is a young adult novel. It just goes to show the lengths people will go to to save themselves or those they seem to care about.
The Audiobook narrators did a fantastic job with this book and I loved listening to it alongside reading the physical paperback of this book. I’ve already gone out and purchased a copy of the audiobooks for Good Girl, Bad Blood and As Good As Dead so I can do the same thing and have the full, immersive experience of these books.
CONTENT WARNING: Murder, Death, Blood, Vomit, Drug, Drug Use, Alcohol, Alcohol Use, Infidelity, Injury Detail, Rape, Sexual Assault, Death of an Animal, Confinement, Domestic Abuse, Xenophobia, Racism, Mild Cursing
I truly enjoyed the story and the narrator!
Not normally reading YA novels, but this was so intriguing and full of twists. I already got the other two books.
I listened to this as part of the listenalong for Tandem Collective and it was a wonderful experience.
Can't wait to read more/listen to other audiobooks from Holly Jackson. My reviews and stories can be found on Instagram at @nazathebookworm. Thank you for the chance to listen to this!
I loved this! The actual story itself is incredibly captivating and draws you in with plenty of twists and turns.
I’ve not read much YA before but this had me HOOKED!
The audiobook choices for voices was spot on and was a really enjoyable listen, I would recommend!
Well I was not expecting to love this book as much as did but oh my goodness! It’s marketed as a YA thriller but all the older readers I know who’ve read it have loved it too so I think that’s testament to how good it is.
Andie Bell has been missing for five years, the whole town presuming that her boyfriend Sal Singh murdered her. Her body was never recovered though and something about it all just doesn’t sit right with Pippa Fitz-Amobi, a younger student who looked up to Sal. Pip refuses to believe Sal could’ve done such a thing and sets out, under the pretence of a school project, to prove his innocence. She enlists the help of Sal’s brother Ravi and, as together they begin to delve deeper into the evidence, someone starts sending Pip threatening messages. If Sal really did it why does someone want her to back off so badly? And what lengths will they go to to stop her?
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. We are constantly introduced to new evidence, new suspects and new connections between them all. In the majority of books this would be irritating but Holly Jackson does such a good job of explaining everything and putting it all in perspective that it was never too much. You can always keep track of where the investigation is going and you never lose the focus which I loved. The friendship that grows between Pip and Ravi is sooo wholesome too and, although being a book about a murder some of the content is bleak, it’s just what I needed to read to restore some of my faith in humans.
I was lucky enough to listen to the audio version and it made for such an immersive experience; we hear from various voices as if we’re actually listening to Pip’s recordings and telephone calls which works really well. I would 100% recommend the audiobook to anyone, it’s so so good and I’ve already downloaded the next one to listen to! I’ll be keeping track of everything Holly Jackson publishes from now on ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!
P.S. I didn’t figure out ‘whodunnit’ until right near the end which is always good too 🙌 kept changing my mind. Have you read it and did you figure it out?
Thank you NetGalley, Tandem Collective and Harper Collins for allowing me to listen in exchange for a honest review.
Ah I loved this story & think I loved it even more as an audiobook!
It was performed really well & I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
I’ll be writing & sharing a full review on my bookstagram page asap. (The.readinglife)
One of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to!
At times it felt more like an audio drama with different voice actors and sound effects bringing to life the interviews, phone calls and extracts from Pip’s projects. It really is very well done and incredibly immersive - I found myself unable to stop listening!
The story itself is also great. Without the physical book to refer to, I worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the suspects but it’s written very clearly with neat summaries making it easy to keep track. I had a good idea of who was involved by the end but there were still enough twists and surprises to keep me guessing.
I loved Little Kilton as a a setting and Jackson does a great job of really getting across that small town feeling. All the persons of interest had interesting backstories and having them all connected in someway made the guessing even more interesting! Pip, the main character, is particularly easy to relate to and very likeable. There’s also a sweet bit of romance which was just lovely.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers and Tandem U.K. for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review,
This book was amazing! I listened to it as an audio book and found the narrator and the style it was recorded in made the story even better. The different sounds, personal notes, interviews and key people of interest sections were so good. I found the sections helped to sum things up and kept me up to speed with the latest findings.
It was such an inspiring school project, which concluded by proving who actually committed the crimes. There was also a little bit of romance along the way, so that was nice!
All in all, a very entertaining read, one that I think was made better by listening to it.
