Sisters Molly and Hannah have just lost their mum. Their father can't cope, so they are now living with their grandparents in Northumberland. During a dark, stormy night, Molly is convinced that she saw a man running for his life from a strange, ominous hunt but he has now vanished. He reappears in an abandoned building and seems to be hurt but reluctant to accept her help. The strange thing is that no one else seems to be able to see him. Who is this man and why can only Molly see him?

This haunting, fast-paced middle-grade book is full of myth, elemental magic and beautiful imagery of nature. The personifications of spring and winter are stunning and incredibly unique. It forced me to look at the natural order of the seasons in a different light.

The contrast between the strange, ethereal scenes that possessed a dream-like quality and the potentially mundane school scenes could have made the book seem quite disjointed but somehow it wasn't. It was the perfect coming together of two worlds at a particularly heartbreaking, difficult time for our protagonist. Molly had to go through this monumental change, as her man did.

Overall, it was a very well-written, powerful story of essential change, acceptance of death and the hope of rebirth.
