The golden girls getaway is another truly inspiring read championing the more mature ladies amongst us! Judy really advocates for the older generation and is fantastic at portraying how well life can be lived in old age warts snd all!
This book appealed to me particularly as it was based around travelling around the country in a motorhome which is one of my dreams that I hope to make reality! Also it started off In Wiltshire very near to Salisbury where I live!
Three friends Vivienne, Mary and Gwen live in adjacent flats, and are all very different characters who have survived the covid 19 pandemic, self isolating and all the restrictions that that entails and now restrictions have eased and they are all at a loss and feeling discombobulated, enter one very amorous landlord with a motorhome and a plan is hatched!
The ladies travel around the country enjoying the simple pleasures of life, sunsets, walks, good food and a growing relationship, which leads to revelations ,confessions and second chances!
Such a heartwarming, entertaining, awe inspiring read that I would highly recommend!
Thank you netgalley for this early read.
The Golden Girls' Getaway is my first book by author Judy Leigh. I really enjoyed her writing and this story, which was inspiration, no matter what your age. It told a story of making your dreams come true!
This is the story of friends, Vivienne, Mary and Gwen, who decided when the lockdown ended they were going to take a holiday, which they did. We see the affect the lockdown had, but as the holiday started, they started coming alive once again. They realized they didn't have to stay at what they had become during the lockdown, and started thinking about what they wanted in their lives for the future.
I'm a huge fan of books featuring the older generation. Their life experiences make them the best kind of characters and Judy Leigh does them justice.
I enjoyed going on a journey with Mary, Gwen and Vivienne in the borrowed motor home after escaping the confines of their London, lockdown flats, all in favour of the British countryside.
The book is chock full of humour, friendships and romance, running alongside the fab locations they visit.
It's a big hearted story, leaving you feeling uplifted and joyous!
Thank you to NetGalley and to Boldwood books for the opportunity to read this advanced copy.
The story of three women in their 70-80s who share adjacent apartments and find themselves feeling isolated after Covid quarantine. They decide to take a motor home holiday. The story is sweet and the characters good. There were parts where I felt the message or feeling was being dragged out or being overly repetitive. Overall though a nice read.
This was the first book I had read by this author and certainly won’t be my last
This was such a lovely escapism read while at the same time being relatable
And poignant at the same time. I loved how the friendship evolved between Vivienne Mary and Gwen when they decided to embark on a road trip and escape London after being couped up during lockdown and how through becoming friends and the bond between them they were all able to face their demons and challenges in live and also become happier with themselves and each other. I loved the humour in the book which was mixed with a lot of heart wrenching and heartwarming moments as the story came together. I also liked how the ladies managed to help others during their travels and make new friends. I would absolutely love a sequel to this to further see where the lives of these three ladies are going to go next and to further expand on how the story ended
In The Golden Girls Getaway we follow ladies of a certain age, Vivienne, Mary and Gwen as they venture out across Britain after feeling the effects of the lockdown. I found this book to be such a heart warming read that I devoured it in two sittings. There were lots of laugh out loud moments, and touching ones too. I thought it was an utterly charming and feel-good read and it deserves to be made into a movie.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the chance to read The Golden Girls Getaway.
This was such a quick, easy and adorable read. I loved the writing, the setting and the characters were so endearing I wanted to reach in and give them a big old squish. I loved it
I knew that I wanted to read this story as soon as I first saw it. I love a good road trip story and I like having a focus on older main characters, so I thought The Golden Girls' Getaway was going to be a great fit for me. And it definitely turned out to be a fun read! Set during the current strange times with lockdowns, face masks and social distancing, this story shows that there can be light at the end of the tunnel, and maybe even a little dose of romance too.
The story follows three older ladies and neighbors: Mary, Vivienne and Gwen. Each has her own interesting background and I like what they added to the story individually... Mary is Irish and a retired nurse with a hidden past as well as a mouth made for swearing. Vivienne is a successful actress and brings a little glamour to the story; she can be a bit annoying in points, but as a whole I liked her role. Gwen is an opera singer and has the voice of an angel, even though she doesn't seem to have the confidence to match it initially. It can be a bit frustrating seeing her talk herself down, but I liked her character growth and what the singing element in general added to the story.
The road trip itself was probably one of my favorite parts of the story. Once they are off on their little adventure exploring the countryside and coast, the many descriptions of the different stops really made the scenery come alive, and the food descriptions were spot on too. There is lots of time for self reflection as well as more hilarious situations, and of course there is a dose of romance packed in along the way as well. I also liked how everything wrapped up in the end, and while a tad predictable, there is just something about having an uplifting and comfort read to help forget about the world for a little while... Fans of the genre will have a great time with The Golden Girls' Getaway.
This has been the first book I've read up to now, which features the lockdown. For this reason, I found the start of book too much like everyday life & could happily have done without the mask wearing reminders. However, when you get into the story, it's about 3 women, in advanced years, all living within the same building, borrowing a motorhome to go on an adventure and try and kick start some fun back into their lonely lives. We see the friendships evolve with the women as we follow their journey.
This book sounded like the greatest funnest movie and I just knew I had to read it!
Premise
It has been a long and lonely year for neighbours Vivienne, Mary and Gwen. All ladies of a ‘certain age’, their lockdown experience has left them feeling isolated and alone. They are in desperate need of a change.
Things start to look up however, when Gwen comes up with a plan to get them out of London by borrowing a motor home. In no time at all the ladies are on the road – away from the city, away from their own four walls, and away from their worries.
The British countryside has never looked more beautiful. As they travel from Stonehenge to Dartmoor, from the Devon and Cornish coasts to the Yorkshire moors, gradually the years fall back, and the three friends start to imagine new futures with no limitations.
And as their journey continues and their friendships deepen, and while the seaside views turn into glorious mountains and moors, Mary, Vivienne and Gwen learn to smile again, to laugh again, and maybe even to love again. Now they can believe that the best is still to come…
It was so refreshing to read about women of a certain age and it was refreshing funny and heartfelt I love love loved it
Perfect for a book club
The Golden Girls Getaway by Judy Leigh.
I loved that the story was about 3 fabulous older ladies , Mary , Gwen and Vivienne set during Lockdown but coming together after being alone.
They borrow a motorbike and set off on an adventure to visit lots of Britain's wonderful places.
Funny , fabulous , and heartening .
I wish I could have tagged along !
This was a really fun read featuring three ladies of a certain age who are in need of a break after both lockdown and events in each of their lives giving them cause for thought. It was really great to read about older women still loving life and making the most of the here and now, each had a great back story but also a real zest and their warmth and sense of adventure really shone through. They had a great journey together both in terms of the stunning locations they visited and emotionally and it made for a very enjoyable and uplifting read.
Hatching A Plan….
Three ladies of a certain age, all in need of a change of scene, hatch a plan. A plan to escape the confines of their homes, of London and escape to the countryside in a borrowed campervan. The perfect road trip. Along the way friendships bloom as these ladies begin to laugh, live and love once again. A heartwarming, uplifting and enjoyable read laced with gentle humour and wonderfully drawn characters. Lovely.
Mary, Gwen and Vivienne are weary of lockdown and being alone, so they set off on a girl’s trip in a borrowed motorhome. As the three women of a certain age travel the beautiful British countryside, they take readers along with them for a lovely, funny, much needed break from these troubled times
