The tower by Kate London.
The Metropolitan book 1.
A long-serving beat cop in the Met and a teenage girl fall to their deaths from a tower block in London's East End. Left alive on the roof are a five year old boy and rookie police officer Lizzie Griffiths. Within hours, Lizzie Griffiths has disappeared, and DPS officer Sarah Collins sets out to uncover the truth around the grisly deaths, in an investigation which takes her into the dark heart of policing in London.Grounded in the terrifying realities of policing a city where the affluent middle-classes live cheek-by-jowl with the poorest immigrants, this is a complex, intelligent, thrilling crime novel by an author who has walked the beat.
A very good read with good characters. I did like Lizzie. 4*.
What a great read. I thouroghly enjoyed this book. I read when i could and in between jumped o the audio book. It was great as i managed to get through the books in no time. I also enjoyed watching the tv series, but only after i read the book.
I felt it was interesting and engaging and overall i enjoyed the read.
When a police detective and a young girl fall from a tower block, a young policewoman world is turned upside down. I recommend to anyone who loves a good thriller or mystery, to add this book to your list.
This I read along with the telly programme . Few differences but I much prefer the book. It allows ur imagination to do the work and the writing keeps you reading and enjoying it. I enjoyed it
I liked the description of this book and was quite keen to start reading it.
I was left a little disappointed. The characters were convincing and well described, it was old copper style which I found appealing. It touched on racism and sex.
I found parts of the story gripping and some of the characters interesting.
Some of the descriptions make you gasp out loud giving tension to the book.
But it just didn't grip me like other books,
There were bits I got bored with but on the whole, I did finish it, but don't think I would be interested in reading another by this author.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. xx
I thought this book was a really good police procedural read, the author knows her stuff being ex cooper. It felt it was believable and was engaging to read.
WOW - what an opening to a book
Plenty of twists and turns
Read it in two sittings
Thank you netgalley, Kate London and post mortem
I was very excited to read this as I’m one of those people who loves to read books before they’re made into tv shows or films…. This was disappointing and predictable, I’m very sad about that tbh because it had great potential but I think if you like crime books and are looking for something with a heavy police focus, this book is for you. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity
A tower block, two people fallen to their death from the rooftop and a small boy and PC Lizzie Griffiths alive on the roof.
What happened on the roof ? How did a teenage girl and a long serving police officer end up dead after falling from the tower.
DS Sarah Collins is sent to investigate but when her star witness, Lizzie Griffiths vanishes can she still get to the bottom of what happened ? Can she find the young police officer ?
A great thriller with plenty of insight into police procedures.
Thank you to Atlantic Books for a digital copy of this book.
The first instalment in a gritty series of capital-set novels by former Met police officer Kate London. DS Sarah Collins and her partner are called to a tragic incident at a South London tower block where a male cop and a teenage girl have fallen to their deaths. A compelling story told in flashbacks.
Postem Mortem, Collins and Griffiths #1 (aka The Tower) is the first novel in a new series by Kate London, that focuses on the investigations of DS Sarah Collins and PC Lizzie Griffiths.
The story takes place on a seemingly normal day for police officers Lizzie Griffiths and Hadley Matthews, as they deals with calls related to petty crime, neighbour disputes etc, but ends with Hadley dead and Lizzie treated with suspicion...... The novel begins with DS Sarah Collins arriving at the tower block, minutes after the tragedy has occurred. With both a dead officer and teenager, there are many questions to be answered and this will be the task for Sarah and her colleague Steve. Lizzie meanwhile has opted to hide and avoid dealing with the aftermath. As the story continues, Lizzie reveals the events that lead to the tragedy and the reader is brought rapidly through the story as the pace builds to an exciting conclusion.
What follows next is a powerful story, that benefits from the immense knowledge of the author in regard to investigations and the internal forces within the Met. This is not an easy read and in parts, I struggled to read about the racism and gender issues that seemed to permeate all levels within the force.
Well worth a read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Phenomenal. This book had me stumped. Sitting smug and thinking I had it all thought out, the author put me in my place. Finally we have a mystery that will keep you your toes. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Intense reading in this police procedural trying to find out what really happened when a policeman and child have fallen to their deaths at ‘ The Tower’
Well written with lots of twists and will be now interested to see how adapted for TV
This was a book with so many twists. A great story and I enjoyed it unfolding on the page. 5xxxx. If you fancy a police procedural with a difference I recommend that you pick this book up
In south London, a police officer and a fourteen year old girl lie dead at the foot of a tower block after plunging from the roof. On the roof with them: a five year old boy, and another service police officer.
Police investigator Sarah Collins has to rind out what really happened. Which might be rather difficult, since the other police officer has disappeared.....
Having read a couple of years ago the third book in this series it was strange to go “back to the beginning” with The Tower but I’m glad that I did.
Kate London’s novel isn’t a normal police procedural or crime story but a well paced & thought provoking read that starts with 2 deaths in strange circumstances. What follows is a police investigation with a difference with a number of twists and turns to keep you hooked
Definitely recommended.
A gripping and harrowing story, which has the ring of truth. Highly recommended.
This is a detective drama with a believable and disturbing plot.
When a police detective and a young girl fall from a tower block, a young policewoman world is turned upside down.
The tower in the tarot is a reference to the complete disruption of an existing way of life. This is not overtly stated, but is apposite.
A very good book.
The Tower by Kate London
Not your usual crime novel , but nevertheless still a good read.
A police officer is found dead , along side a young woman outside some flats . The police officer on the scene is Lizzie and we follow her as she goes through the process of the procedural to solve the mystery of the deaths .
A very compulsive read from Kate London with a believable plot. The book opens with the deaths of a police officer and a young immigrant girl. It's slow paced with a good insight into the mind of Lizzie, a young police officer. The book is not so much a crime novel, more of a story about the morality of modern policing and I would recommend it. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
