Super nice book with approximately 15 crafts to expand your knowledge of crochet. Personally, as a beginner/intermediate, I found some of the ideas way too complex for me. That said, It still is a great book to refer back to when I want to accept the challenge and try something new from one of the four season sections.
Not your Grandma's crochet. Today's crochet artists have access to fibers and designs that mean there is no limit to what can be created with a hook and threads. MODERN CROCHET STYLE has so many great patterns that work up quickly and easily, leaving you time to make more. They make great gifts for yourself or others. This book is a valuable addition to me pattern library and would be an excellent gift for your favorite "hooker".
This book was received as an ARC from Pen & Sword - White Owl through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
As a novice of crochet, and eager to learn, I was impressed with the patterns and projects presented in this book. However, from the content of this book, I'd say this book is more for the experienced crocheters looking for new ideas for future projects to add to their collection. i loved the photos of each design and the colors used really popped on the page. If anyone was to make me one of these corchet designs, I would be very happy. Once I get enough practice, I'll try one of these crochet designs in hope to succeed as a future gift for some special people.
A book for the experienced crocheter looking to add to their collection. This book deserves 5 stars.
This book was everything I wanted it to be. It had me turned pages without even realizing. It was so good!
Great book for all those interested in crochet. Lots of ideas on items to make. Well written and easy to follow
Modern Crochet Style by Lindsey Newns includes 15 crochet patterns ranging in home decor to accessories. The crochet terms are explained in both US and UK which I always find helpful.
Keeping that in mind you need to remember these patterns are written in UK terms. There’s also a section explaining the different UK crochet techniques with a few photos included for reference.
As far as the patterns themselves, I found them well written with clear photos. One of the patterns I want to try is the “luxe scrunchies”. I had never thought of making scrunchies with delicate mohair yarn to give them a nice fluffy look. I love this idea and will have to look into my yarn stash to make a few. I know I have velvet yarn somewhere around here.
Some of the other patterns included in this collection are a gingham bag, woven wall hanging, textured cloths, loopy cushions and this slogan bathmat shown below. I like that the patterns showcase different crochet styles and techniques such as graph work and tapestry crochet. I also like the use of different textured yarns.
Overall, Modern Crochet Style by Lindsey Newns is a very nice collection of unique crochet patterns featuring different techniques to hone in your crafting skills. I would say this book is for the advanced beginner onwards and would make a nice addition to any crocheters pattern book library.

The book is divided into four chapters. The author begins the book with terminology, substitutions/conversions, abbreviations, and techniques.
Chapter One: Spring
Chapter Two: Summer
Chapter Three: Autumn
Chapter Four: Winter
In chapter one, I love the scrunchie pattern. The woven wall hanging reminds me of macrame work. The textured kitchen cloths would make a nice housewarming or hostess gift. In chapter two, the eye mask is so cute, and I look forward to making several of them. The tassel basket is a great way to use extra pieces you have stashed away. The placemats technique is an amazing way to combine two different types of materials into one project.
In chapter three, the “Soak” bathmat is unique. The duffel bag would be great either as a tote or a large purse. The patterned scarf is a twist on traditional granny squares. Chapter four has hat, cowl, scatter run, and holiday stocking.
I really enjoyed this book. The projects are all different and it is nice to see an assortment of projects than the more traditional crochet projects. I recommend this to anyone looking for new projects.
I love looking through crochet books as I have become a pattern collector. This book did not have any patterns that interested me personally. I lean toward a different style of crochet I suppose. It would be good for an advanced beginner though.
This book contains 15 patterns from t-shirt yarn bath mats and raffia beach bags, to luxe Christmas stockings and leopard-print cowls. The patterns are easy to read and well illustrated. The book contains information of materials and basic instructions for stitches. This book didn't have many patterns that interest me personally but I'm thinking new crocheter's will find it appealing and not basic blankets or vests. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Great crochet instructional book for beginners to intermediate crocheters. It included beautifully styled photos for all the finished projects with great yarn and color choices. I especially loved how every chapter was a season; spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season included several projects that go with the season. New techniques and old with pictures and detailed descriptions were included. Abbreviated glossary was also included. I would recommend this book to my crochet friends.
I liked this book, but I think it’s a bit too much for me as a beginner. However, it’s nice to see what I could achieve.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
I’m an Advanced Beginner in crochet. I really liked this book. There are interesting projects that I hadn’t seen in other books. I found the instructions clear and easy to follow.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
My reading has faced a few alterations in the past few months because I started to pay serious attention to crochet and knitting again. One of the primary reasons(there were a few) was this book.
I received a logbook of sorts with tiny checks with a large order of yarns a couple of years ago. I never figured out how to note down the stitches on it until I got to this book.
I have not worked proper Fair Isle style before and have not done complicated colour work either. This book let me learn and implement it with ease! I tried only one of the patterns in here, but the clear instructions and the simplicity of the projects were refreshing. I jazzed up my version of the hat in the book, mostly because I only had a random collection of yarns, and I wanted it to be warmer.
I would love to keep a copy of this on the shelf to browse and adapt designs from. There is nothing exceptionally novel in the patterns and suggestions within these pages, but it is done in a manner that greatly boosted my productivity, and that is all a person really wants out of such books, right?
I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading and trial experience.
I was so excited to be accepted to review a digital copy for Netgalley. I'm an avid crocheter. I loved the patterns offered in the book, they are well explained. Can't fault it!
I would happily collect all crochet books if I could, so I was very happy to get this advance copy. This is a nice little book but It doesn’t have very many projects or photos/ illustrations. I didn’t see any photos or illustrations of the basic stitches and I always find those to be very helpful. It is divided by season which is a bit different. One note…these are UK terms which can be confusing, at least for this crocheter.
This book was both informative and easy to follow. The pictures were vibrant and well placed. I can't wait to try some of these patterns myself! These are not your Grandma's crochet patterns. An old craft ready for a new age.
Modern Crochet Style might just be my new favorite go-to book when I'm looking for a fun, meditative project to work on for a weekend.
As soon as I flipped through, I saw so many projects I wanted to start immediately. So far, I've made the Geo Hat (so cute) and the Patchwork Scarf (which is easily my favorite design in the whole book). I'm a fairly experienced crocheter and have read dozens of patterns from different designers, and I can honestly say that Newns does an excellent job of providing clear, detailed instructions for every project. There's also a great range to the difficulty of the projects; none of them are too complex (though some provide a good challenge), and there are plenty of quick-and-fun simple projects. I think both intermediate-experienced and beginner crocheters will find something they love in this title.
Also included in Modern Crochet Style is a helpful stitch glossary, dozens of colorful, beautiful photos, as well as a super helpful "Tips" section for the different projects. Definitely recommend this title for anyone looking for unique, cute crochet projects!
(thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for a free review copy in exchange for an honest review)
I was able to scan this book and look at the techniques used in each pattern. The patterns are cute, use a lot of common stickes in modern and creative ways. The directions seem easy to follow making this book a great addition to any library or crafters bookshelf.
Modern Crochet Style has fifteen projects and is divided into five main chapters: Introduction and each season.
The Introduction includes the crocheting abbreviations, conversions for UK/US terms, and techniques for each stitch. Some of the stitches have descriptions only of how to do it, whereas others include photographs.
The Spring, Summer, and Winter chapters each have four projects to complete and Autumn has three.
Each project has plenty of photographs to show the end project and the steps needed, alongside the materials required to make the item. There is a mixture of projects, be they for the home - cushion cover, placemat - or as a fashion accessory - scrunchy, scarf, hat.
I like this book and it would be great for a beginner like my daughter who I have just taught the basics to.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
Loved it.... this is one of those instances where I wish I had one craft bone in my body. I have tried but can not get the hang of crocheting. I really want to try to make one of those placemats with macrame cord. Simply gorgeous! This book gives me hopes that I can at least make something.... five stars, I really enjoyed looking at the patterns even if I know nothing about what it means.
