It is rare that I find a crochet book where I would actually want to make anything. This is the exception. There are a few patterns I will try. The instructions are very clear and for a reasonably experienced crocheter the patterns are easy to follow.

I learned how to crochet years ago and I have gotten better with each year I've been doing it. I saw this book and new that I had to review it. It has many cute crochet patterns to be able to do and some of them are easy. I wish there were just a little more patterns in the book but it's a good start. I'd get it for someone else who loves to crochet.

Divided into seasons with patterns for each. There are a few that are something I would never make, that are those crochet items that look vintage crochet that I don't care for. Then there are modern looking items like a Geo beanie and an interesting pillow. Especially nice is a rug/runner using up your "what in the world am I going to make with this Scrappy yarn"

A fun book on crochet both little and bigger projects for your home or as gifts. Some are perfect for the left over yarn that is always hard to use.. The instructions are well illustrated and some of the articles made such as hr, bathroom mat, hair tie, 3D baskets, woven and tapestry cushions - are little different from most crochet books. There are also a collection of different yarns such as raffia, hemp used and incorporating macrame cord in fruit placement mats. There are also some traditional items such as hats, scarves stockings.
A handy book to have and could be used to teach simple crochet

This book is a good one if you are familiar with crochet and need a few more patterns to get inspiration projects. There is a variety of skill levels and very useful household items. I was really happy to see more than just beanies or blankets here. Definitely will be making some of these projects in the future.

While this looked like a cute crochet book, I do think it’s important to note that it is in UK terminology, which is difficult if you’re used to US terminology just because they share some of the same stitch names (example: treble stitch) but are different. While the patterns looked adorable (the scrunchie one definitely caught my eye!), I know that many people (myself included) would find it difficult to relearn the terminology they’re used to.

This crochet pattern book offers a nice selection of patterns. The patterns range from home decor items to wearable garments and accessories. The writing is accessible and easy to follow. Patterns are geared towards beginning crochet crafters, though they offer plenty of challenge for more advanced crafters.

This will be a new go-to book when my friends want to me to teach them how to crochet. Simple yet beautiful projects that are well explained and detailed instructions with gorgeous pictures make this a perfect book for beginners and advanced crocheters alike. I think my fav was the Pom Pom duffel bag, but there are so many projects that I will for sure end up making for myself as well as for gifts. I like that there were detailed instructions for all the stitches as well as a breakdown of yarn weights so that if you don’t have the specific one, you can substitute and still get he desired effect.
Well done!
Thanks to Pen & Sword and Netgalley for this Arc in exchange for my review.

This is a great crochet book for beginner crocheters. Everything is explained really well, and the book goes through everything step-by-step. There are nice, big color photos of the finished projects. I found a few that I wouldn't mind making. I don't care for some of the bold colors, but that's easily remedied by choosing my own colors. That's one of the great things about crochet. Some of the patterns are a little bold for me, but I don't think you can please everyone all of the time.

If you are either a beginner to crochet or an expert this is the book for you. The instructions are clear , easy to understand and the illustrations are superb. There are a wide range of interesting projects which will make the crocheteer want to pick up their crochet hook and get started.

A fun book full of fresh new ideas for every season. The book provides instructions for making scrunchies and wallhangings, and incorporates chunky yarn into projects, which is always so much fun.

For advanced crocheters.
Newns is a UK author so U.S. crafters will need to be prepared to translate the measurements and find equivalent yarns since many of her brands won't be readily available here. Secondly, and far more importantly, it's assumed that you are pretty proficient and are ready to jump into more advanced techniques. I'm a visual learner so I found the instructions too wordy and the illustrations too sparse. Otherwise, for the crafter skilled at crochet, this books is filled with gorgeous projects and unique ideas.

Some beautiful crochet makes to inspire. It is good to see more unusual ideas in the projects
presented (for example using cord to make placemats and the scrap rug). The projects have a seasonal theme and are very varied.
All the techniques are very well explained at the start of the book and the patterns are clearly presented.
I think this would enable a beginner to tackle the projects with confidence and would make a delightful present for a beginner or someone with previous crochet experience.
A delightful book!

I'm so pleased I have been introduced to Lindsey and this beautiful book. I am someone very new to crochet, currently not really straying out of my comfort zone and using the same one stitch to crochet scarves for family! I would say Modern Crochet Style is a great introduction to crochet and the different stitches but also perfect for those experienced in crochet as it includes some really nice and modern designs. I love the light, fresh photography throughout the book. The close-ups of the stitches are extremely helpful and I love the fact the book is divided into seasons with relevant designs for each season. I'm slightly daunted by some of the patterns/designs but with the instructions laid out clearly, I feel it's something achievable. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC, it's given me the inspiration to jump in and try new crochet projects!

It warms my heart to see younger people picking up some older hobbies and this book is a great example. The author shares a varied set of projects and provides good instructions. Though I don’t agree the book is for beginners too, as there aren’t pictures outlined different stitches and I can see them easily becoming frustrated.

This is a lovely book for beginners and more advanced crochet enthusiasts alike. It includes easy to follow patterns for home accessories like placemats, bags, cushion and wall hanging. It also includes patterns for a scarf, scrunchie and even an eye mask. One thing that struck me though was the title was I was intrigued by the title of "Modern" crochet style, but I found the style was still traditional - this wasn't an issue for me, as I love to crochet anyway.

Its okay, some of the projects are mostly weaving tbh.
I did see some new techniques and the photos are beautiful

Modern Crochet Style is a wonderfully vibrant pattern book full of new and original pattern designs for your home and yourself. The patterns are easy enough for a beginner to tackle and the step by step instructions and wonderful pictures make each one easy to follow. Refreshingly everything in the book is useful and appealing so it is a great place to start on a .crochet adventure.

Modern Crochet Style will revive crocheting just like macrame has come back. Lindsey Newns has created beautiful projects that are also innovative in technique. Creating scrunchies from hair bands will be easy for the beginning crocheter. Then they can move on to a granny square scarf featured on the cover. Using crochet to make a background for a woven hanging or to make a rug from a crochet/weave hybrid is ingenious.
I haven't crocheted in years and this book has me itching to dust off my hooks.

Modern Crochet Style is a pattern book with tutorials by Lindsey Newns. Due out in late Dec 2021 from Pen & Sword on their White Owl imprint, it's 112 pages and will be available in paperback format.
The layout is clear and bright with high contrast text and modern feeling colors. The chapters are arranged thematically: a tutorial introduces the basic stitches and concepts and is followed by the project patterns (there are 15 total) grouped seasonally: spring (hair scrunchies, an adorable gingham bag, wallhanging, kitchen cloths), summer (eye mask, cushion, basket, placemats), autumn (bathmat, duffel, scarf), and winter (hat, cowl, rug, and stocking). The photography in the sample pages is excellent, clear and full of color.
The projects are quite appealing and not-too-trendy (but not stodgy), and are versatile enough to invite crafters' personal embellishments or followed as written. The author gives specific information about yarn weights and good tips on fibres and colourways.
Four and a half stars. This would be a superlative choice for public or school library acquisition, maker's groups, fibrecrafts groups, activity groups, pension homes and similar. The projects range in difficulty but none are beyond the scope of a keen amateur. I was impressed how cute the hair scrunchies turned out and it's a really great pattern for using up tiny scraps of yarn which we all seem to collect.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
