Another winner from Molly Green. I have been privileged to read her last three books from #Netgalley, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Bletchley Park was such an important part of the war, and much has been written about it. This book has been well researched and deserves to stand up at the top with the best ones. Looking forward to her next book - I have read them all!
Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park has it all. Two people torn apart by war. An incredible and beautiful saga that will have you looking forward to Book 2 of this new series. The storyline and characters are something you will find yourself rooting for.
Molly Green has done a fantastic writing job with this book. I seriously can’t wait until book 2 is released.
Thank you to #netgally and #avonbooksuk for allowing me to read the eARC of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.
What an absolutely fabulous read this book by Molly Green is! I consider myself lucky to have received an ARC from #NetGalley.
This was one of those books that held me entranced from start to finish. Dulcie, or Dale as she likes to be called, is a compelling main character for whom the reader cannot help but care. Her relationships - be they with friends, her parents, co-workers, or love interests - ring true and carry the story in a heartwarming and sometimes heart-wrenching manner.
The setting of WWII in England, and in snippets in Germany, is incredibly well researched and riveting. It also holds some chilling parallels to events in present-day Europe. The insight into the secret work done by women is intriguing, and the difficulties of the bombings of London come across with painful clarity.
I'll be interested to see under which title the book is eventually released - Summer Secrets or Wartime at Bletchley Park.
Green has definitely written a book that will go down as one of the best of the year.
I love reading anything set around Bletchley Park. This book was very enjoyable with a great set of characters to really become attached to.
Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park by Molly Green is the debut of The Bletchley Park Girls. Dulcie “Dale” Treadwell is a reporter who is only allowed to write fluff pieces. With the outbreak of war, she is hoping to be considered for more serious articles. She is in the heart of London when the city goes dark the night war is declared. She meets American broadcaster Glenn Reeves, and it is love at first sight. After a special night together, they make plans to meet the next day. Dale is heartbroken when Glenn fails to show up. She is unaware that he had to leave for Berlin shortly after they parted, and Glenn had no way to contact Dale. After entering a crossword competition, Dale is recruited for Bletchley Park. She signs the Official Secrets Act and begins her work in Hut 6 on the enigma machines. Once Dale gets the hang of the work, she finds it exciting. Dale hopes to get a promotion to a cryptographer after she has proven herself. After returning from visiting her parents in London, Dale is summoned to Commander Travis’ office where she is summarily dismissed. She is not given a chance to explain her side of the story. Is there any way to for Dale to her vital war work? I like Molly Green’s writing style. It is casual (easy going) which makes the story easy to read. The book moved along at a good pace. I thought the author captured the time period and I can tell she did her research into Bletchley Park. I wish there had been more on Bletchley and the work done there. The main focus of the book was romance. I thought the characters were realistic. Their behavior and attitudes suited the era. I liked Eddie who also worked at Bletchley. He is a lively character with a good heart. He becomes good friends with Dale. I actually liked Eddie more than Glenn. The ending was abrupt and felt incomplete. I hope we learn more in the next installment in The Bletchley Park Girls series. Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park (also known as Wartime at Bletchley Park) is an engaging historical novel that sweeps readers back to the start of World War II in England. Summers Secrets at Bletchley Park is on the beam with a first glance romance, a warlord landlord, a serious supervisor, mysterious machines, a missing man, a flirty friend, parent problems, and a perilous problem.
This was such a lovely book to read. I’ve read a few about Bletchley park and this one was as good as the others. I always enjoy a war-time saga and this one had it all. Romance, and sadness and then of course happiness. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
This is a book of two people who are split up by war, in different places but are joined by their hearts.
Working as a reporter, Dulcie, she’s looking at the blackout in London, standing on a bridge, meets Glenn, he works as a American war journalist. It’s his last day as he’s going to Berlin, they are supposed to meet and swap addresses, but Glenn doesn’t turn up.
Then Dulcie has a job offer, to work at Bletchley Park, to decode German codes. Not being able to tell truthfully what she’s doing, she tells her mother and others that she’s a clerk for the war office.
There’s another person working there, Eddie, who likes Dulcie, but, she’s thinking about Glenn. As she’s new to the place Eddie helps her.
Dulcie loses her job after someone turns on her. Will she be able to prove she did nothing wrong and get her job and honor back?
Will Glenn and her see each other again or does she agree to Eddie said.
It was interesting to read about those that worked as code breakers at Bletchley Park. Also how during the war, time was spent whilst trying to help save people.
I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc of 'Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park' by Molly Green.
A romance story set along the backdrop of WWII and Bletchley Park. Dulcie 'Dale' is a reporter in London on the eve of World War II. The night the blackouts have been announced Dale is out watching the lights being turned off trying to catch a story that will push her career to the next level. She doesn't get the story but she does meet Glenn Reeves, and American, and falls in love. When Glenn leaves without a word on a secret mission Dale is heartbroken until by chance she wins a crossword puzzle competition and is invited to come to the War Office for an interview for a job. This is where she becomes part of Bletchley Park and all the goings on that happen there.
I enjoyed this story, it was a pleasant, fun, romance novel with a historical background. I thought that Dale's relationship with her parents was well explored and added good detail to the story. The ending was emotional and pleasing though it leaves me wondering about what will happen when Dale learns more about Glenn and when they are going to be able to reveal their secrets, also how they plan on continuing to be together if Dale is in Bletchley and Glenn has to go back to America? Maybe in future parts we will learn a bit more about Glenn and Dale.
Overall, 4 stars.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this lovely book
any book that has bletchley park is always going to be good...this is my first book by this author and it wont be my last
dulcie is a wannabe reporter but as with the times women reporters arent taken very seriously....then one day she enters a crossword competition and her life changes forever....
the characters that you meet in this book are very likeable apart from one... and there is always one... a very enjoyable storyline that drags you in and keeps you reading right to the end...
will be keeping an eye out for more of this authors works
First book that I have read by this author but will look for more of her books. Interesting to read about Bletchley and made me want to learn more about what the lives were like of the people who worked there.
Like other reviewers I found the ending too abrupt and would have liked to learn more about the people and what happened to them.
Thanks for an ARC and the opportunity to read this book
Love from Afar
A romantic war time love that is heartwarming. Two young people separated by a war, by a continent, but connected by their hearts.
Dulcie is a reporter for the local newspaper. One day while watching the blackout in London from a bridge she meets Glenn Reeves, an American war correspondent. On his last day before being sent to Berlin to cover the news there they are to meet and exchange addresses, but Glenn never shows up.
Meantime, Dulcie is offered a job at Bletchley Park decoding the German Enigma codes. It is top secret and she cannot even tell her mother or anyone what her job is. As far as anyone knows she is a clerk working for the war office.
Eddie , another code breaker working at Bletchley Park is attracted to Dulcie, but she only has eyes for Glenn and he is who she is thinking about. Even so Eddie and Dulcie are good friends and he helps her out as she is new at Bletchley Park.
Even when she is betrayed and dismissed from her job, Eddie still is there for her. Can she prove her innocence and regain her job and her reputation? Will she ever see Glenn again, or will she accept Eddie's proposal?
This is an interesting book about the code breakers that lived at worked at Bletchley Park in England during the war. It is about how they did their jobs, spent their leisure time and helped to save lives during WWII.
I did enjoy reading this book and I would recommend it.
Thanks to Molly Green for once more writing a great book, to Avon Books U.K. for publishing it and to NetGalley for making it available to me.
I became a fan of Molly Green last year when I read A Sister's War. I absolutely loved that book so I had such high hopes for Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park. Unfortunately I was left a bit disappointed. It's a decent historical fiction read but I was just expecting more. It was interesting to read a book set around Bletchley Park and reading about the work that was carried out during the war and I enjoyed reading about Dale's growth and determination throughout the book. I did not like Glenn though. I found him quite cheesey and I was cringing quite a lot whilst reading the parts with him in it.
Dale meets her American GI and after that no man will ever match up to him. This is the story of Dales war and her adventures at Bletchley Park. Meanwhile Glenn is having his own adventures in Berlin. An informative historical love story.
A love story and a view of life working at Bletchley Park during WW2. While the love of her life is away, a young woman finds herself a job at the Park helping to decode messages.
First book I've read by this author. Great setting for this story and a brilliant start to a new series.

Absolutely loved this book, and because of last summer's visit to Bletchley Park, it made the story come to life more, imagining Dale and the girls in the huts.
The story centres around Dulcie (Dale) Tredwell, who lives and works in London as a journalist, at the break of WW2. She enters a crossword competition and finds herself offered a job, that will aid the war effort and is Top Secret so she is not allowed to talk about it. She ends up at Bletchley Park, trying to crack messages sent by the Germans.
She has met and fallen in love with an American Broadcaster who has gone to Berlin to work, and she meets another chap in Bletchley. Will she forget about her love or give in to a new one.
This book was lovely and give you an insight into the role of the men and women of Bletchley Park.
A book with a great story and characters that draw you into the lives of them all I have loved reading reading Molly Greens new book as I do like her books.5*
Bletchley Park, and how it played a role in ending the war, is a fascinatingly rich subject and within its walls is set a compelling romance between Dulcie (who prefers to be called Dale and is secretly working on the decoding machines) and Glenn (who is an American journalist working in Berlin trying to persuade the Yanks to join in the fight).
I thought the description of the war, the immediate effects of the blackouts etc in London and then the suspicions of the people in the local area to Bletchley were well-written. It is truly commendable that the real people who worked the machines at Bletchley didn't break the secrets act and the hardships they endured such as the dark sheds, constantly changing shift work and whispers of cowardice was again well described and realistic.
Overall anyone who likes historical fiction and romance would enjoy this story.
**Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read an advanced e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own **
Bletchley Park is such a fascinating subject and setting for historical fiction and I've read many of them. While not as compelling as some others, this is an enjoyably light romance. I loved the unique billeting she has and enjoyed the descriptions of the house. The characters are endearing, with one notable exception! Everyone needs a nemesis, though. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
A reasonable romantic yarn set around the (now) world famous Bletchley Park, at a time when its work was as secret as it is possible to imagine. However, for readers looking to find a more compelling story along the lines of, say, the Girl from Bletchley Park, then this may fall a little short. There is a danger, always, in getting aboard the trend of novels set around a particular historical event, and this is certainly the case with the amazing work of the Bletchley Park men and women. A reasonable read, nonetheless.
