Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park
by Molly Green
Dale is a Junior reporter for the Kensington Post but only allowed to report on mundane storird like garden fetes and woman’s interests as obviously they’re not very intelligent. Bored and frustrated she decides to do a human interest story the first night of the night black as war has now been declared and meets Glenn an American radio broadcaster getting ready to go to Berlin on the bridge. Her editor throws the story in the bin as sentimental rubbish. Dale wins a crossword competition in the telegraph and is offered a job by the war office. After arriving at Bletchley Park all is not plain sailing.
A book that encompasses you and all the characters are lovely although there are a few really nasty and descriptive scenes involving the horrors of war.
Very enjoyable well written read if a tad slow in parts. 3.5/5
What is it about Bletchley Park that attracts so many authors? Hot on the heels of The Rose Code by Kate Quinn comes Summer Secrets at Bletchley Park by Molly Green. The novel starts just before war is declared and we are given an idea of how normal life is suddenly turned upside down, initially by the London blackout which our lead character Dulcie witnesses as she writes a heartfelt piece for her newspaper. Romance blossoms for her from the chance meeting of an American called Glenn Reeves, a broadcaster. Her blackout article was not well received by her editor and more or less becomes the catalyst for a change in her life. The outcome of a crossword competition steers the direction of change she so desires, namely a job in Bletchley Park.
It's quite an engaging story and I found it thoroughly entertaining. There were a few niggles and one was a description of a plastic snow dome. At that particular time it would have been glass, as plastic ones only came out in the 1950's. The other was to do with Glenn Reeves who I don't believe is a narcissist however.......He took her in his arms, murmuring against her hair, 'I love you Glenn.'
Anyway, I will give it four stars, knocking a star off for having similar themes to The Rose Code.
What a sweet book this was to read. A story that captivates you and characters you want to read more about. A perfect book for the sofa and a glass of wine!
I have read a few novels by Molly Green and was delighted to be approved to get an advance copy of her new saga.
This did not disappoint. Full of interested characters that come to life on the page. Easy to read an dfollow storyline.
Anybody who likes historical fiction will love this book.
Thanks to#NetGalley for the advance copy in return for an honest review.
Dulcie (known as Dale) meets American Glenn on Westminster Bridge on the night London's lights went out at the start of WWII. Glenn is a broadcaster, about to be sent to Berlin, and Dale finds herself swept up in a tale of love at first sight. However, things don't run smoothly, and Dale finds herself with a top secret job at Bletchley Park, not knowing whether Glenn is even alive. Will they both survive the war and find their way back onto each others' arms?
An enjoyable and interesting read based around the secrets of Bletchley Park. I enjoyed the characterisation, I found myself caught up in Dale's worry for Glenn. Definitely looking forward to the next part of the series.
Brilliantly written book focusing in the work done at Bletchley Park during the second world war.. The lives of the code breakers and cryptanalists working in the stifling huts is told with authenticity and factual accuracy. Having read several books on the work of Turing and Welchman as well as visiting the amazing Bletchley Park ,this brilliant book brought history to life with its human touch. We sometimes forget what amazing feats of endurance and sacrifice these brilliant people endured and how in the face of accusations of cowardice or worse, they never broke the official secrets act, many of them taking their secrets to their graves. The beautifully crafted love story played out against this backdrop added another dimension and the characters were believable and engaging. Highly recommended
A wartime story that flowed along nicely but without any real major shocks.
Dale works as a newspaper reporter but is not very happy as she is not trusted to cover any big stories. This is mainly because she's a woman. Once again we see how women's lives were so much harder then and how little was thought of them. They were looked on as homemakers no matter how intelligent. Dale is bored and frustrated with life when she applies for war work.
She ends up at Bletchley working with the code breakers. Having already met and lost the man of her dreams she keeps herself to herself initially. Slowly she begins to make friends.
The part about Bletchley was very interesting. Enjoyable learning about what they really did and how strict it was. Signing the Official Secrets Act was serious business.
I did think Glenn's stint in Berlin could have been explored a bit more to add to the story. Also there were parts that were a little implausible. A few too many coincidences.
I didn't like the ending. Too abrupt. It's almost like it's a story to be continued but I don't think it will be.
Oh my, this book just pulls you in from the beginning. Dulcie is living at home with overbearing mother and a father who is more interested in pursuing his own interests. While out one night Dulcie bumps into American Glenn Reeves who promises his love for her then doesn’t keep a special promise. To help overcome her disappointment Dulcie goes off to Bletchley Park where she prefers to be known as Dale.
Will she ever get to meet Glenn again now that the war is underway.
The attention to detail is quite something, I learned a lot while enjoying myself at the same time. It was quite fascinating. Loved it.
Summer secrets at bletchley Park.
What an outstandingly fabulous read I loved the characters also the simplicity of the story as well a really good and very catching book you have to keep turning the pages highly recommend.
A WWII romance set at Bletchley Park. A part of WWII history that wasn’t really known until recently because the people involved had to keep it a secret. But now that Bletchley park and the code breakers are known, it’s become a popular setting for WWII novels and WWII romances and I’m loving it.
A wonderful saga set during Ww2 Molly Green has written another lovely story. The characters the setting the story line we’re warm and I really enjoyed this book.#netgalley #avonbooksuk
What a great ww2 saga from a seasoned author.
Dulcie or Dale as she like to be called has one hell of a journey in this well written book. It follows her career in Bletchley Park with a few mishaps on the way and a little bit of romance thrown in.
A great curl up and read book.
Highly recommended
Dulcie lives with her mother. Her father is working away from home when he sends his wife bad news. She is distraught and clings to Dulcie as she doesn't want to be alone. But Dulcie has other ideas and as a result of winning second prize in a crossword competition she is asked by the government if she wants to do something to help win the war. Soon Dulcie finds herself in Bletchley Park de coding German messages,
Before she left to go there she met Glen, an American radio correspondent . They fall in love but all too soon he is posted to Berlin and they haven't given each other their contact addresses .
I thought this was a good read. I've read a few books set at Bletchley and enjoyed reading this one too.
I thought Dulcie managed to cope well with some of the obnoxious people who came into her life. I did find it it strange that two men fell in love with her at first sight within a few weeks of each other. My imagination only stretches so far.
I was enjoying reading this but was surprised and dismayed when it ended so suddenly. It doesn't look as if the next book in the series is a sequel to this so I'll just have to be content that everything will have turned out well in the end
This is one of my favorite genres to read, so I was interested in checking this one out. I've never read this author in the past, but I enjoyed her writing style. She created a storyline and characters that pull the reader in, which themes of love, family, and friendship woven throughout. I've never read other stories that featured Bletchley Park, so I liked that, as well. The ending felt a bit abrupt, but perhaps the author has a sequel in the works.
What a wonderful historical fiction! Perfect to cozy up with and read with a cup of coffee or a snack. Green has a way of crafting likeable characters and creating a comfortable yet exciting atmosphere in her books. While some elements felt a little far fetched, the book as a whole was an absolute pleasure to read. Quickly becoming one of my favourite historical fiction authors, I can't wait to see what else Green writes. I know I'll be reading whatever she puts out in the future.
A new WWII book taking place at Bletchley Park, the place the German codes were broken. It played such an important part in the war so it was very interesting to read more about what went on there on a daily basis.
I like Dale as a character, she was smart and young and she handled herself well. I did think the ending of the book was pretty abrupt, but it looks like there will be more books in this series.
This book was sent to me electronically for review by a Netgalley. I enjoy WWII books…this is a quick, light read about a segment that we seldom read about. The author has woven a journey for the reader…tantalizing…interesting…learning…love…family…friendship…themes running through this book…try this one…
Firstly thank you Netgalley for this ARC.
What can I say another brilliant book by Molly. Family saga based in the war just love it can't wait to read more
