This was a solid mystery with enough twists and turns to keep me intrigued. I liked Steph even though she is a bit naive at times.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow this book just totally took every single fear I have about often being home alone and put them into a book to taunt me. Certainly got my pulse rate up!
Steph knows something is going on after her split from her husband, even if her daughter Bea says otherwise.
This book also highlights many of today's problems in society, including homelessness, which is sensitively and wonderfully written. The characters are believable and well drawn, Steph somewhat naive, Bea and arrogant little madam.
It builds to a breathtaking finale where you will keep shaking your head as you don't see the twists before they smack you in the face. Brilliant.
I found this to be a chilling and nail biting read. It was a real page turner that I had trouble putting down. The twists and turns kept me very engaged.
This is what I would read when I am in the mood for something light and not that forces me to think hard.
The writing is good and the plot is decent. The twists, you do see it coming or if you are guessing, chances are your guess is correct.
Steph is an extremely kind woman to the point where you end up wishing her to not be that kind.
I adore this author. Rona Halsall is definitely on the list of favourites from Bookouture and this book hasn’t disappointed.
This is well written and completely addictive. I have devoured page after page in just one sitting. This has been a read that I have been unwilling to put down.
The Guest Room has kept me guessing and been filled with suspense throughout. Steph is a character who is too nice, whereas Andy is easy to dislike.
This is a book which moves at the perfect pace. It is entertaining and filled with twists and turns. I can safely say there is nothing to dislike about this book.
I absolutely cannot wait for more. Halsall keeps getting better and better.
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and the author Rona Halsall for the advanced copy of The Guest Room. After thirty years of marriage, Stephs husband Andy leaves her to live life on her own for the first time. Steph is determined to keep the home where she raised her family despite her husband and daughters wishes. When strange things start happening in the home, Steph decides to let a tenant in need of help into her home in hopes that having someone else around will allow her to feel more at ease and help with the financial side of things in order to prevent her husband from selling the house from under her. But once the tenant moves in things seem to take a turn for the worst and Steph no longer knows who she can trust.
Although I enjoyed the idea of this book, I found it very predictable. I found the book became repetitive early on and didn’t hold my interest like I had hoped. This was an easy read but fell a bit flat for me. I would recommend this book to anyone enjoys a thriller, I just found it a bit too predictable to be suspenseful enough for my liking.
Steph is lonely. Her husband has walked out on her and her grown children have no time for her. She allows a young man to move in with her to help him out and suddenly her family is now interested in her and the mistakes they believe she is making.
I can see how their concern is warranted, but it takes some usually incidents before Step can see that.
I highly recommend this read--you will feel the suspense for her as weird stuff happens and it becomes more and more confusing to figure out who is behind it.
“Thinking is difficult, that’s why most people judge.” This book talks about judgment of others without knowing the complete story. Steph is a nurturer with a huge heart. Her passion is helping those who have lost their way get back on track. A young homeless man named Noah touches her heart. Reminding her of her estranged son, he quickly becomes the focus of her kindness much to the chagrin of her daughter and husband. Should he be trusted? Are his motives genuine, or is something more sinister at play? This character driven thriller kept me reading late into the night. I was immediately drawn into Steph’s world and was interested in the outcome. The final twist was definitely a surprise. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.
Usually Rona Halsall books are exactly the type of stories I like that have me gripped from the very first sentence. I don’t know why but this one was different from the all of the others and I really struggled with it. I think I started reading it 4 or 5 times but after about 6 chapters I just wasn’t gripped. Not sure if it was my high expectations due to the author or just because of the story. Either way I can see I’m in the minority based on other reviews hence the reason for my rating.
What a gripping mystery
This was a very disturbing but good read.
Thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish and could not get enough of.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
Thrilling. Beautifully written. A treat of a read. Love this author and her wonderful books always always deliver.
This book is the sheer definition of suspense - it is quick and easy to read, but most of the tension comes from the expectation that something bad is going to happen. There is not a lot of actual action in this story, so it’s more suitable for fans of slow-burn mysteries.
What I personally liked about this book is that the premise is interesting, and the twist is surprising, but it also makes sense in the end. What I didn’t like as much is that some things were left unexplained. There were some loose threads which could have been developed further, and some other parts that could have been shortened. Also, I unfortunately didn’t like or connect with the protagonist, Steph. She kept thinking she needed to be more independent, but then all her actions went against that resolution. This means that there was not much character development for her over the course of the story.
Despite the flaws I mentioned, this was overall a fun and quick read. If you’re looking for something light, go for this book.
The Guest Room By: Rona Halsall and Narrated by: Emma Gregory was an excellent audiobook. I've always loved Rona's books and this one did not disappoint, I was hooked within the first chapter I listened to and ended up putting my earbuds in and started to do some DIY. I was in a world of my own! Steph thought she had everything,
a loving husband and two wonderful children and they had a lovely home. Then, after thirty years of marriage Steph’s husband wants out of their marriage and he left their beautiful home. Then, their son rushed off to begin his own life in the military without a word and then Steph’s daughter got married leaving Steph on her own all in their family hime. Steph has never been alone for over thirty years and all of a sudden strange things start to happen around her home and then she starts to have money worries. Steph needs to act quickly and decides to take a lodger in. Out of all the people Steph could of had as a lodger, she decides to take on a young lad called Noah who reminded her of her son. Noah os homeless and she wanted to reach out and help him especially as .
the idea of him moving in sounded like the best solution for both of their worries.
This book had lots of twists and turns throughout that will have you hooked. You will never get bored of Rona's books. She has a way of bringing you into all her books. Once you start you will not put it down!
I highly recommend The Guest Room.
Big Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
“The Guest Room” by Rona Halsall kept me up one night!!! Steph is getting a divorce and rents out her room to a homeless man. She hears strange noises in her house and strange things start happening. Her ex-husband and daughter are telling Steph to move out. I liked how the author portrayed people who are homeless in a positive light. We truly don’t know what another person is going through.
I guessed the culprit halfway through, but it was so much fun seeing Steph work out the clues. The twists and turns will keep you reading. I would like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
The Guest Room is another great read by Rona Halsall and I did think I’d cracked this a third of the way in to be totally wrong. 😂😂
Steph is trying to survive in her family home, her husband has walked out, Bea her daughter has married and left home and her son walked out years ago with no contact since. She is trying to hold down her job but when she returns to her home at night she feels someone has been in the house. Through loneliness she invites Noah, a homeless boy she has met through her work to lodge in her spare room to help her feel safe but strange things are still going on. Smashed windows, tv turned on in the middle of the night, the smell of cigarettes in the air are just a few of the things happening. Convinced this is someone trying to get her out of her house she has to find out who it is.
This was a decent read and I enjoyed it even though I smugly thought I’d got the culprit but hadn’t!! This has a good few red herrings and twists along the way to keep me interested and can’t wait for what Rona will write about next.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
The Guest Room is a great psychological thriller full of mystery and intrigue. There were many untrustworthy characters and the story was written in such a way that I was kept guessing right up until it became clear who it was towards the end.
Well written and full of suspense, twists and turns, I found this book really enjoyable.
The Guest Room by Rona Halsall is a psychological thriller that will have you guessing throughout the book. After 31 years, Steph‘s husband walked out on her and her daughter. Once he is moved out, Steph begins experiencing weird and unusual happenings within her life. Steph allows someone to move into her house as she rents out a room. Is this person safe? Who is causing this fear in Steph’s life?
3 for neutral. For some reason I didn’t get this book downloaded in time. I’ll make sure to update this review once I’m able to buy and finish!
Full review to come on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy.
This was on o.k. read for me. I would give it three stars.
The plot was interesting enough. Steph, a forty something woman, finds herself estranged from her husband of 30 years. She is also estranged from her grown son, who she hasn't seen for 10 years. Steph is close to her grown daughter, Bea, who has married a wealthy man.
Strange things start happening in Steph's home, windows are open, the smell of smoke, a broken window.
Who is the culprit? Who is trying to frighten Steph?
Steph meets a young homeless man at the shelter where she works. Because Steph is nervous living alone with the strange occurrences, she invites the homeless young man, Noah, to move in.
Strange things continue to occur, and now the list of suspects is growing.
The reveal was surprising at first, however, it meandered so at the end, that it lost it's suspense. The ending was rather flat, and went on too long.
