Seven individuals meet at a deserted nature reserve over the Christmas break with the intention of bird-watching and hiking together. Some among the group have more than these innocent plans set in motion however, with potentially disastrous consequences for all involved.

I thought the author did an excellent job of introducing the reader to the main characters and allowing us to understand their histories and relationships, whilst also keeping many secrets reserved for later dramatic reveals. I also loved the setting the group were soon to explore, which only became more sinister as the sun set and the snow descended.

My attention started to sway once the first dramatic interlude had occurred and did not return until the novel's close, however. So much of this novel was spent with the various characters fleeing through the dark with little other than their scattered thoughts and fears for their safety marking the pages. I wish far less time had been spent on this focus, as it soon began to feel repetitive with little added to the story-line.

However, my interest returned with the final reveal, which I did not see coming and thought ingenious on the author's part. I thought it a devious twist to end this novel with and ensured, despite my lacklustre response throughout, that this is an author I would read from again.

This was very enjoyable at the beginning. Well paced and interesting enough to keep me listening. However, as I got to the half way point I felt it really slowed down and by the end, I had lost all interest. Very disappointing ending, too. Most of the narrators were great, but I didn’t like the one who was reading Emily’s character.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC of this book.

'Hide' is a decent enough thriller. The action predominantly happens in realtime in a 24hours ash period.

The plot centres around a group of birdwatchers meeting on Boxing Day for a walk in a local reserve. One of the group doesn't make it out alive, The unfortunate victim is portrayed as more than a little annoying.... The remaining members of the group all have motives to want him dead (above and beyond his somewhat irritating personality!). Its a bit of a 'whodunnit', but with lots of action and the occasional bird reference thrown in.

The pace of this book was ok for me, quite focused on the action with cat and mouse type stuff (great if that is your bag!) One thing I really liked was the relationships between the characters - very dark and twisty and utterly fascinating!

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the fact that each character had their own narrator - this just makes an audiobook just feel a bit special ion my opinion!

Overall an enjoyable enough read/listen. My thanks to Netgalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my goodness- this book is amazing - amazingly scary!! The way the book is written you feel as if you are right there, running through the woods trying to escape a murderer. I was completely blown away by the plot twist, and I think I’ll be sleeping with the lights on for a bit.

Gripping psychological thriller featuring a group of friends who have arranged a special trip to a nature reserve on Boxing Day. Relishing the prospect of being able to visit when the site is closed to the public, they soon find themselves wishing they weren't so cut off from any hope of help. Narrated from multiple points of view, the interwoven stories combine to ramp up the tension.

I love Nell Pattison's writing and how her stories break down taboos around hearing impairments. A great story and a very well narrated audiobook.

I really enjoyed this pacy thriller. I loved the multiple POVs and the ending was excellent. I also really loved the nature aspect of the novel. It was a great original storyline.

I didn't particularly enjoy how the story developed and found it a bit boring. The beginning was good though and I'm glad I finished it, as I found the ending the best part. Almost thought a sequel could be possible... guess I'll have to keep an eye for future works from Nell Pattison. Thanks for the opportunity to hear this audiobook.

7 regular bird watchers get together at a nature reserve in Lincolnshire on Boxing Day. The reserve is closed but Lauren works at the reserve

After walking deep into the reserve to watch a murmuration they have split up to get different views and a loud noise rings out and one of the friends has been shot and another one has been injured but who is the murderer

There is no one else on the reserve as its shut so its got to be one of the group especially as the victim had a shown his true colours a few weeks earlier on a night out where he got drunk was abusive to all of them and said he knew all their secrets is this the reason he is now dead

Each chapter is a different character and narrator and it works well

This was a classic style of murder mystery/thriller where a small group of people in an isolated situation suddenly are confronted by a murder. Of course, they are miles away from the Visitor’s Centre, their cars, and assistance.

At chapter 38 just as it was getting close to finding out whodunnit I was gutted when my book ended but I contacted Netgalley who said they had been made aware of the issue and I was able to download the full version and finish the last 4 chapters which also brought another twist

Overall, I found ‘Hide’ a good listen with some interesting twists.

My thanks to HarperCollins U.K. Audio Avon for a review copy via NetGalley of the unabridged audiobook of ‘Hide’ by Nell Pattison in exchange for an honest review.

The audiobook has seven narrators, one for each point of view character. They are: David Thorpe, Sherry Baines, Alex Wingfield, Nick Biadon, Clare-Louise English, Billy Ashcroft, and Beth Eyre.

For the past few years Lauren has been meeting up regularly with a small group of nature enthusiasts. On Boxing Day she has arranged for them to visit the Lincolnshire nature reserve where she works for an afternoon walk and wildlife spotting.

Among the group is her sister, Emily, with whom she has a complicated past. After contracting meningitis as a baby, Emily is deaf, though she uses cochlear implants. Then there is Morna, in her 60s and a long time volunteer at the nature reserve. She appears to resent Lauren.

The chaps accompanying them: Alec, Ben, Dan, and Kai each have their own issues which are explored or hinted at in their chapters. Then there is a murder! No details of who in order to avoid spoilers.

Having seven narrative voices did seem rather crowded, though after the murder it drops to six. Once I realised the format, I made a notes for myself on who was who, which helped me until I became familiar with everyone.

This was a classic style of murder mystery/thriller where a small group of people in an isolated situation suddenly are confronted by a murder. Of course, they are miles away from the Visitor’s Centre, their cars, and assistance. I did wonder why a reserve didn’t have proper signage to assist visitors.

With no phone signal there’s a lot of wandering about in the woods holding their phones up and tripping over tree roots. Add to this lots of anxiety as to whether the murderer is one of the remaining group or an outsider, such as a poacher or someone trespassing on the reserve.

With respect to the audiobook, having seven narrator for the seven characters worked well at establishing the differences between them. I was quite pleased with this approach.

Overall, I found ‘Hide’ an entertaining whodunnit with some interesting twists.

An enjoyable thriller and a fab audiobook, Hide will give you chills! I could practically feel the ice coming out of the speaker, the scene is set so well. As a fan of walking the dog in pretty places I loved the nature reserve setting, it made it really easy to picture and was the perfect place for this to ensue. I liked hearing from all the different narrators and thought the cast were great; I definitely prefer books in which you get to hear multiple perspectives, especially in a thriller. In this we’d finish one chapter and be left hanging waiting to find out what had happened to that particular character which added to the suspense.
On the flip side I did feel it could have been a bit shorter as there was a lot of the same stuff happening that it went on for a little longer than it needed to. And there were a few plot holes for me too - <spoiler> Why didn’t Dan kill Emily when he first caught her in the woods instead of trying to talk to her? And if he was so hell bent why didn’t he pick her off sooner when it was just him, Morna and Emily? Why did he kill Alec? Still doesn’t make sense to me as when Alec described it it wasn’t instant. Was Kai faking his ankle injury and why did he keep stalling, surely not just for the purpose of avoiding his poacher friends? What was the light everyone kept seeing all about? Did Alec know Lauren’s secret? Why did Lauren run out to help Emily when she heard her scream if she actually wanted her dead? Why didn’t Morna help her grandchildren, her reasoning was ridiculous. And why on Earth is Emily so oblivious to how much Lauren dislikes her?</spoiler> I still have lots of questions about bits and I prefer when everything is properly explained away, BUT I did like the final twist at the end (although I did see it coming.) I would’ve liked to have known more about some of the characters back stories too. We hear a lot about some and not so much about others, especially Lauren who’s very important but who we only hear about second hand.

All in all it was an an enjoyable listen with a different premise to any of the thrillers I’ve come across before, I thought it was quite original. If you’re looking for a good, wintery read (but be prepared to feel cold!) this could be the one for you!

Thank you, @netgalley & @avonbooksuk for providing me with this ALC in exchange for an honest review. 💙 And happy Book Birthday to this one! 🥳

Seven friends go on a winter hike together to bring their nature group together. But underneath a layer of pleasantries, deep and dark secrets reside. 😱

Multiple POVs (narrated by a full cast) + a lot of secrets?
I am in! 🤩

I went into this story without knowing much about it. I saw the cover, snow-covered trees, and thought this would be the perfect wintery thriller. 😅
And, boy, was I right! 😎

There are very unlikeable characters, who I loved to hate, and who made me throw up in my mouth a little every time they opened their mouth. 🤢
Everyone is also hiding something from the group, which creates this crazy dynamic of "who knows what about whom". 🧐

I enjoyed this book a lot. The narration was also very fun, I easily could follow whose POV it was thanks to the full cast narration. 😁

I would definitely recommend this one! 💙

This book is perfect to read at this time of the year, and I really enjoyed listening to it while I was painting my house. The story is about different characters coming together to do some bird watching in nature, but one of the group are killed, and so they all go on high alert and try to stay safe. The beginning of the book was a bit slow, but after the murder, it became fast paced and more exciting. The narrators of the book were fantastic and they all did a good job of portraying each character. I liked the way each voice brought more depth to the story and I felt like I was in a movie, with a lot of tension and suspense. It was all very exciting and I found that I wanted to keep listening, to find out what was going to happen next. I didn't feel very connected to any of the characters; it was more like the story and setting were at the forefront, rather than each character having a full story, although some of them did have some things going on, which were revealed nearer the end of the book, and this was interesting. Overall, the book was good and it kept me engrossed until the end.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The quality of this download was much lower than usual. I assume this is some sort of download or app error but I couldn’t fix it even after force closing the app abs trying to download again etc. Some of the voices sounded okay but others were unlistenable at any speed above 1x. Any faster and the sound and clarity were completely compromised and sounded like robots talking, eeep sorry. 1x is just too slow for me to keep paying attention, so I won’t be able to finish listening. I’m sorry! I made it about 25% in and enjoyed it so far, I would (and probably will) buy this for myself when it’s released on the 9th. Thank you so much anyway to the publisher, the author and to netgalley for this advanced listening copy.

This was a brilliant and gripping novel that was hard to put down , it definitely is a page turner. The whole novel only spans a few days and there is so much action, twists and turns that it will leave you breathless. The characters were very easy to like or dislike and in depth enough so you thought you know them but do we really? Who is actually hiding a secret? Well you will have to read these book to find out you won't be disappointed.  The storyline was brilliant and so unique which I loved tremendously.  Its a perfect winter read. I listened to the audiobook and loved the fact there was a full cast of narrators with their different accents it really brought this book to life adding a great sense of atmosphere and tension.  It atmosphere of this book really left me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. I loved the cover of this book, it has so much atmosphere and mystery about it that just draws you in and makes you want to read it.
I must say I really did love the ending of this book it was so unexpected and shocking that there has to be another book eek.
Many thanks to the author and publishing team for bringing us this immensely gripping novel. I just can't wait to read the next instalment of this book. First of all I want to pay my compliments to all the actors that narrated this book, this was a first for me, so many narrating voices. A genius and effective answer to a multiple character story which really brought it alive.

Besides that, the story itself is incredible and fabulously written: clever, gripping and claustrophobic, it will take your breath away and keep you guessing til the very end, and what an end!!

The seven members of a wildlife-spotting group have received a great opportunity - thanks to one of their members working at a wildlife reserve, they have the entire reserve to themselves on Boxing Day to watch the starling murmuration that occurs every evening. However, when a shotgun blast rings out and one of them turns up dead, suspicions begin to fester in the group - everyone has a secret, and nobody wants to be exposed. One of them is a murderer and is stalking the others.

The book itself is reasonably well-written. My main issues are two-fold - firstly, the plot is very predictable. I guessed every single twist and the identity of the killer from about 30% of the way through the book. Secondly, the characters themselves are all pretty unlikeable - even probably the most likeable character turns out to be sleazy in the end and it doesn't sit well. It's a shame, because the performances in this audiobook version are pretty good but they're let down by the source material.

Hide is a slow burn UK mystery turned survivalist thriller where a group of friends embark on a bird watching expedition through a snow covered nature preserve. However, when one pretentious member threatens to expose the group’s secrets right before the trip, the group’s dynamic shifts and everyone is now on edge. When a gunshot echos through the nature preserve, the hide becomes a bloody crime scene; trust is replaced by self defense and self preservation. The gradual revelation of the shooter’s identity is just one of many twists!

I enjoyed the back stories of each characters and the dynamic of mistrust that grew and festered all the way until the end.

My only criticism is that we knew who died quickly but the identify of the murderer was a very slow burn and a lot of the chapters seemed a bit repetitive. The ending was fast paced and very interesting the and layers of the grandmother and sister’s revenge added depth. I also learned a lot about the deaf community and always appreciate a book when I can implement what I have read and learned into every day life.

Although I loved the cover of Hide, with it’s wintery, Christmassy cover, unfortunately that was just about all I liked about it. The story itself is about a group of birdwatchers who gather to watch a murmuration of starlings. Little do they know that there is a murderer amongst them. The murder, a shooting, is over very quickly with little description and from then on in, it’s a series of speculations from the characters of who may have done it and why. The ‘why’ seemed particularly woolly and I found my self nodding off listening to this book, as the characters’ voices were quite boring I’m afraid. I started listening to it in the car on my way to work, so as not to fall asleep but instead found my mind wandering off and then having to rewind it on the way home to pick up where I had left off. I always think that every book has its own charm but I struggled to find it in this tale. It was very obvious to me that the narrators were reading the parts, rather than performing them and the storyline itself was really quite dull. On a positive note, I did learn what a starling murmuration is and also, the difference between, birdwatching and twitching!
