An essential guide for any dog lover and owner. This Q and A style guide provides an overview of your dogs needs and asks many pertinent questions on how to understand and address a multitude of begaviours. Each question is given answers that include tips and methods to use on your own dog to help, and lots of beautiful photos accompany the text throughout. It is slit into short sections with headings to help you find information quickly when you want to dip in and out. The guide also includes lots of useful numbers you might need as time arises - eg if you think your dog has been poisoned, what to do if you think your dog has dementia. I have gained so much insight into my own two dogs and lots of useful tricks to help with their over-licking or how to stop them barking every time the door bell rings. A superb guide to manners and behaviours in your pouch. #thedogbehaviouranswerbook #ardenmoore #Netgalley
Upon becoming a proud fur-mum I’ve taken it upon myself to continually level up my knowledge, my secret weapon, the dog behaviour answer book which provides answers to real questions and easy to implement training for your basic commands (watch me, sit, stay, come, find your spot and off), allowing you to better understand your dog's unique behavioural quirks and address any undesirable behaviours.
It’s written to the likes of a Q&A column in a pet magazine, so if you’re impatient like me you’ll likely end up skim reading the question back story and get straight to the juicy bits and they will be juicy, eye opening and best of all practical.
Get ready to get your doggy behaviour questions answered... and a few more you never knew you had!
This book contains lots of great information and advice. My enjoyment was affected though by missing/misplaced/repeated text throughout the Kindle edition.
I read much of this book with my own dog sprawled against me or in my lap. Since I was focusing on points made in the book that related to her, that seemed appropriate. I'm happy to say I'd already progressed past many of them and patted her on the head for me having done it correctly but also for being so patient during the times I wasn't quite up to snuff. Dogs train us, too, you know.
If you own a dog, it's almost certain you'll find something of relevance to your partnership in this book. It's an easy to read, entertaining. and has many adorable photos and bits of doggie lore and information. I'd love to be clever and impress you with my way with words but, well, my message is simple. All dog owners or potential dog owners need this book on their shelves.
Daisy, my rescue corgi mix, gives it four paws up and an enthusiastic tail wag.
Thank you #NetGallery and #StoryPublishing for sharing this gem with me. My dog Daisy thanks you, too.
This is a very thorough Q&A style book about dog behavior with lots of color photos. It's composed of just tons of short questions and her answers to them, which each take up a few paragraphs. It covers things like how to get a dog to stop guarding resources, dogs who are grieving, getting ready for a move or a new baby, and so on. It tends to give rather short answers but they're mostly complete. Some topics aren't covered that I see come up the most in my best friend's pet business like what to do about aggressive dogs, dogs who keep escaping from your yard, dealing with excessive barking or weird phobias, and so on. Most of her advice is to train with treats. She also focuses on letting dogs know who's boss and there's a pretty heavy element of control and hierarchies. Some answers surprised me, like how to pick out a dog who'll like to wear fashions -- I think a lot of dog experts would just say don't dress up your dog. :) It's an interesting book though and I learned some new stuff.
I read a digital ARC of this book for review.

Dog owners and lovers alike will rejoice. This book answers many questions you have and those you didn't know you had. An in depth analysis of dogs and their quirks are included. I enjoyed this book and will reference it in the future.
Written in a friendly, accessible style, 'The Dog Behaviour Answer Book' gives you just that - answers to a whole range of questions about dog behaviour - both those out of sheer curiosity, and those requiring a solution to a problem. All the issues you'd expect are here - chewing, barking, separation anxiety etc. etc. There's also some more general advice and tips, such as how to choose a puppy, how to prepare for bringing a dog home, and at the end there's a section on teaching the basic commands (sit etc.)
I think this is aimed more at the dog owning novice - of which there are plenty at the current time. Even as a relatively new dog owner myself I had already picked up most of the information here from other sources, including good free internet resources such as those provided by some animal charities and dogs' homes. A lot of it is also common sense. In my experience advice on dog behaviour is easy to come by and logical, but difficult to actually put into practice.
A couple of times the answers don't feel as comprehensive as I'd have liked them to be or didn't quite answer the question asked. The initial section on 'what's it like being a dog' I'd hoped for more of a deep insight into the instincts of dogs and how they fit into the home. Revelations like them being able to smell and hear a lot better than humans can weren't really what I was looking for.
As I read a galley copy I wasn't able to get the full benefit of the formatting so I can't comment on the layout.
If you or someone you know is a new or aspiring dog owner, this is a decent book of information about dogs and their behaviour and some of the common problems. It is written with clear affection for and understanding of dogs. Experienced dog owners are unlikely to find anything new, and if you are looking for something more advanced then this isn't the book you need.
As a dog-mum to a misunderstood miniature dachshund, this book was super helpful.
So much prior to this I would have said “dog-Mum to a NAUGHTY’ miniature dachshund.
The book is laid out really well, it’s easy to read and understand - giving you clear reasons why your dog is showing certain behaviours and how to combat those. I would absolutely recommend to anyone getting a puppy, or for those with a frustrating young adolescent dog.
Very useful when considering how to train and care for your puppy and was easy to digest. There’s a lot to take in when getting a new dog, especially a puppy so to have something that gives meaning to why some behaviours are happening or why a dog reacts in certain ways is powerful and a great resource to refer back to, keeping it in my mind when handling your dog.
Many tips for puppies, I would have liked to see more detailed answers for adult behavior.
A good starting point.
Arden Moore has written a great book of questions and answers on the quirky behaviour of our beloved household companions. I think this is an interesting but perfect way of answering any and all of the questions we have on why on earth does my dog do this. There's definitely a few pointers in here I will be taking to heart with my own little terror (I love her really). Moore also includes a few little tidbits on different breeds and behaviours that are interesting and at times amusing, you'll definitely have moment of 'huh, that makes so much sense. This is a great book for the beginner dog owner.
I received an advanced copy of shortbread shakedown from netgalley for review.
Lots of wonderfully helpful I formation about dogs. From how to train a dog to do tricks to how to stop them jumping up at people - this book has so many top tips for dog owners. Clear instructions and interesting reasons for why dogs do what they do.
A great book for potential dog owners to read before that trip to the shelter to adopt a dog and then for dog owners to reread as that cute little puppy grows into a determined, strong-willed two year old. Moore connects dog behavior to their basic instincts whether is it barking, licking, or running. The Dog Behavior Answer Book provides logical explanations for why dogs do what they do and shows that misidentified bad behavior occurs rarely in spite to anger owners.
Having a puppy at home, and having had many a dog before, this book was quite helpful in trying to understand the dogs psyche and behavior.. I think it will really help in correcting some bad habits and improving the relationships!
The Dog Behaviour Answer Book is an interesting read that covers a range of issues relating to owning a dog. As well as choosing the right breed for you, puppy behaviour and why dogs act a certain way there is also basic training tips and case study examples of different behaviours and how to resolve them.
I think this is a helpful reference book which would be useful to new dog owners or those experiencing a specific issue with their pet. It is advocating reward based training methods and is clearly written by someone who loves and understands animals.
I love reading about dogs and especially their behavior. This book is interesting and each section is short enough to read quickly. The pictures are adorable! Perfect book for any dog lover!
This very informative guide and training book for dog lovers is fun and easy to read. Written in a question and answer format, it is filled with lots of practical advice and fun, interesting facts. For instance, my Maltipoo, Linus, is fascinated with dogs and other animals on television, but it never occurred to me that his excited barking could be frustration at being able to see a dog and yet not smell it. How strange! he must be thinking, lol. It was also fun to learn that his sister Opal’s zoomies are a show of happiness. Well written and visually pleasing book!
(Thank you for the opportunity to read this book! I have posted a review on Goodreads and will post on Amazon and B&N at the time of publication.)
What a fascinating and beautiful book, not only are there lots of cute dog photos but it’s packed to the brim with hints and tips to make your puppy/dog become the best that they can be. I love the simple advice and also all of the background about why dogs act in certain ways. This is a great read.
I have a 9 month old cockapoo so I found this book really fascinating and rather helpful! It’s so interesting to try and understand what your furry best friend is thinking and why they do the things they do!
