While I enjoyed Dial A for Aunties... I have to say that this sequel isn't for me.
Four Aunties and a Wedding is the second book in the Aunties duology, focusing on Meddy's wedding to Nathan, and how it goes awry - the many, many ways it goes awry.
For me personally, the appeal fo the first one was how outlandish yet plausible the construction of the plot was, and this was simply missing in this second book. It all veered towards completely outlandish which, for me, made the reading less enjoyable, for reasons I'm still working out. I just found it really difficult to really get in to.
All that aside, there's still the same quintessential humour as in the first book, where I did genuinely laugh out loud at some lines. I can appreciate where she was going, but it just wasn't really for me.
Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review!
If you want to be cheered up in these difficult times, then this is the book to do it. Meddy Chan is about to get married to the man of her dreams, Nathan. At Christ Church College, Oxford, no less. As the family travel to the U.K., the behaviour of the aunties begins to cause her some embarrassment. But that’s just the start of Meddy’s worries. If she’s going to save her wedding, then drastic measures are needed, and the aunties rise to the occasion.
This is a hilariously funny and light-hearted book, guaranteed to cheer anyone up. Jesse Sutanto has the market cornered when it comes to the ridiculous. I loved it. Her aunties are brilliant. The descriptions of the Chinese-Indonesian culture are excellent. How her family choose to interpret it had me in fits of laughter. The women are warm and loving and will do anything for family.
I was given this ARC for review.
'Dial A for Aunties' - the first book in this series - was an absolute smasher for me. It's not my usual sort of read but it was just so fun, the storyline was excellent and the characters in the series are hilarious.
This is the second book in the series and the characters are still as fun as ever. We're following Meddy during her wedding planning and wedding day to the dreamy Nathan. It's definitely a fast-paced experience and there's lots of characters, new and old, to get to know.
Although it was still very enjoyable, I didn't like this quite as much as the first book. I think it was just a bit too chaotic at times and I thought the first storyline was stronger. It also made me sad that the lovely Meddy was getting her wedding day ruined - I much prefer it when it's someone else's big event getting ruined (sorry!) so I can relax and enjoy the main storyline.
Having recently read and loved Dial A for Aunties I was delighted when I saw this sequel available for request on NetGalley. This book was just as entertaining and funny as the first. Although I felt the plot was somewhat predictable there was enough twists and turns involving the families antics to keep the story entertaining and interesting. I loved the relationships and characters in this book. It did an excellent job of portraying close family relationships albeit in some rather unrealistic scenarios!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable and fun read!
3.5*
I previously loved the first installment of the series, Dial A for Aunties (it became my favorite book instantly and I always gush about it every time someone brings the book up on Instagram) and I was definitely anticipating the second one. So when I was given an ARC of this from Netgalley, I truly had high expectations going into this book.
Were they met? Not really. I enjoyed this one, maybe not as much as Dial A for Aunties but the shenanigans that Meddy and her aunties found themselves in this one was the kind I was looking for in this series and I certainly liked that I get to see them in action again..
Even though a lot of people said that this book isn't as chaotic as the first one, I honestly beg to differ. This one was even more chaotic in my opinion, and if I said that I didn't get anxiety from reading about the aunties in this one I would be lying because this book gave me the worst kind of anxiousness - I think this is largely because it's Meddy's own wedding and if I were her I would be so frustrated.
I also think that reason contributes a lot to the 3.5 stars I'm giving it right now. I felt so nervous and anxious reading this, especially during the middle part and I felt that at some point it also felt kind of dragged on (especially during the middle part). I also think that the chaoticness of the Aunties in this one doesn't hit as much as the first and so made the middle part really sluggish for me (even with all that is going on). I enjoyed the first half though, and even more in the first 20%. I really thought it was going to be a 4-5 star based on that 20% alone but I was wrong I guess.
What I love about this book is how the topic of Asian diaspora and family was brought up, and I enjoyed the last 20% too because of this. I didn't really enjoy reading this in Meddy's POV during the middle part especially when she was having these conflicted emotions of being embarrassed about her aunties but also wanting to protect them at the same time because it felt so real and I definitely has experienced that feeling too in my life. But I liked the ending. I also loved the mixed Indonesian-English writing in this even though sometimes it felt way too confusing (due to the ARC format i think) because everyone was practically talking at the same time and reading this felt like I'm at the mall overhearing people and other families talk. I felt right at home. Also I loved how I can understand all the Indonesian cultures and quirks that were talked about (especially the whole arisan and the batik but make it a logo brand thing LMAOOO. Also thank you for mentioning kwetiauw aka my favorite dish of all time)
Even though I didn't love this as much as Dial A for Aunties, I did like this one and would still recommend it to everyone who wants to read and come back to these characters and their shenanigans again. I'll probably be rereading this also when my physical copy comes because I feel like I would enjoy the formatting a little more, and will definitely try and make up my opinion more during that time.
I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review
After reading and loving Dial A For Aunties, I couldn't wait to read this and it's safe to say it didn't disappoint. This book is one of those laugh out loud every one stares at you books. I loved every character and found them relatable and loveable. Following on from the first book Meddy and Nathan are now getting married after a long long long road of events that happened in the last book.
The best part - the aunties are back! Meddy's ma and three aunties have my heart with their fake British accents that had me dropping my phone several times. Meddy and her family find out that their wedding organisers are part of the mafia. Sounds bad right? Well it gets worst, they plan to execute someone important who will attend to the wedding and if Meddy tries to tell anything to Nathan, they threaten her to talk to the authorities about Ah Guan’s suspicious murder. Poor Meddy is struggling to leave the past behind her but she has to do something to stop their plans and at least she has the experience already.... This is the funniest, warmest, cosiest books I've read this year and I would defiantly recommend it to fans of Crazy Rich Asians.
Unfortunately I didn't love this one as much as its predecessor. I found it even more chaotic than the first book, and sadly not in as good a way.
It was rather hard to keep up with what was happening to whom and where - the cast of characters was simply too large this time to effectively keep track. I also felt incredibly sad for Nathan, who spent his wedding day with his new wife nowhere to be seen.
All the chaos of the first book but not as much of the heart.
They're back and just as manic as ever!
In this sequel to Dial A For Aunties, Meddelin has landed her dream man and a luxury flight to England for an idyllic wedding in Oxford. Unfortunately she's not alone, she's got the 4 Aunties as travel companions and with that company there is no way her wedding day is going to be all plain sailing, But then again when your wedding planners are part of the mafia nothing ever goes to plan.
Jessie K Sutanto has given us a sequel every bit as fun as the first. The antics of the aunties are laugh out loud hilarious and the book is filled with plot twists that are always unexpected. I hope to hear more from this author and perhaps this family in future.
Just like the first book in the series, 'Four Aunties and a Wedding' was hilarious and brilliant, with tons of characters that you just can't help but fall in love with. This book was such a quick read and I could not put it down because I needed to know what was going to happen next. 'Dial A For Aunties' was one of my favourite books of 2021 and is one of my favourite books of all time, so my expectations for the sequel were so high. Even though I loved this book so much, I think the first book was a lot better. Something about the storyline of this one did not excite me as much as the storyline from the first book did.
I was entertained the entire time whilst reading and I still adore Meddy and her aunties so much. There were so many scenes where I was laughing so hard at some of the things the aunties were saying or doing. They are absolutely hilarious and I adore them. I loved Meddy's wedding and seeing her finally get married to Nathan.
'Four Aunties and a Wedding' was just as brilliant as the first one and I cannot wait for further books about Meddy and her aunties because there is something so enjoyable and comforting about being in this world with these characters.
i LOOOVEEEDDD this. i really enjoyed dial a for aunties but this is such a zany, romantic, ultra-fun step up. jesse sutanto can write anything, but i really hope she keeps writing these
Fans of Crazy Rich Asians and My Big Fat Greek Wedding will enjoy this. I really enjoyed the first book so I was excited to read this one, and it didn’t disappoint. Meddy has her wedding coming up, and her family are being as hectic as ever. However, they really help her and Nathan out by finding a family of wedding planners, and Meddy immediately hits it off with the photographer, Staphanie. However, once the wedding in underway in London, things take a dramatic turn and the four aunties are back in action. There were times where I laughed out loud and also where the characters brought me a great deal of comfort as they reminded me of my own family, so overall it was a great read!
If you liked Dial A for Aunties, then you'll probably like this sequel too as it's filled with the exact same flavour of craziness and humour! It's difficult to describe this series as it's a little bit of mystery mixed with a little bit of romance mixed with whole lot of family bonding, but it's definitely an entertaining read! Each of Meddy's aunties are brilliant, hilarious characters and I love how all of them would do anything for her without question (even, you know, casually kidnap a few wedding guests). I did wish Nathan had got a bigger part in this though, but that might just be the diehard romance-lover in me talking! Pick this up if you want a light, easy, funny read.
I am sure that this book would appeal strongly to many readers. It is clearly full of humour and depicts Chinese Indonesian culture vividly. However, it somehow didn’t grab by attention and I struggled to read it. I suspect that this is more to do with me than the book. Jesse’s first book was highly acclaimed and I am confident that, if you enjoyed that, you will also love this one.
A good fun next installment from the author. I came away from this book feeling uplifted, it is lighthearted and carefree, with some funny moments. It is well worth a read.
Have you read the first book in the series, Dial A For Aunties? Did you love it? If so, definitely pick this up🥰 It’s as ridiculous and unrealistic as the first one, and I loved it!!😍😂
This time, the four auunties head to Oxford in Englad!!! Can you imagine them in a classically elegant European city like that?!😂😂 Many stupid things happen of course. It’s a disaster😂
But at the heart of this ridiculous story is the strong family bond and love. That’s what makes this series such a nice, heartwarming read at the end of the day!
DNF. I have not read the first book in the series and maybe that was the problem but I could not finish this book.
Totally unfunny with characters that just irritated me, I did try to persevere but just found it completely banal...sorry!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy for an honest review.
I haven't read the first book in this series, however the synopsis sounded absolutely promising and my kind of bonkers, so I've requested it, and as soon as it arrived on my kindle, I started to read.
Guys, I persevered. I went into this book with open mind, ready for everything, but this what I got has was simply beyond my expectations. It was too much. Too bonkers. And while I love bonkers it was too bonkers. It was so unrealistic that it was impossible to digest. At the beginning I really read every single word and tried to get into this book, into the world of the characters, giving them benefit of the doubt. But the more unrealistic it became, the more I found myself skipping some passages, more and more at the end. So unbelievable - and I know it's fiction, but it was more like science - fiction, what with the author letting her imagination run free, without any constraints.
My stomach didn't hurt from laughing because I didn't find it funny. I found it overdone and forced. You can be chaotic, of course, I am chaotic for example, but this what we got in this book was über. Über. Über. Making you feel stressed with its over - the - topness.
I think it was Nathan that has saved the book for me. Unquestioningly and patiently accepting everything that happens, staying strong by Meddy and her crazy aunts. Believing immediately what Meddy told him, without asking and wondering. This is a kind of man that every woman needs.
If you enjoyed Dial A for Aunties : Four Aunties and a Wedding, then you're probably going to want to read this because the last book was fun.
I wouldn't really advise it though. It's a bit too . . same-y.
There was no big secret - or there wasn't for me anyway - I was expecting a massive plot twist but it never materialised.
After the chaos that was Dial A for Aunties, I was ready for a second serving with Four Aunties and a Wedding. The first book sets a lot of groundwork for this book, so I wouldn’t recommend skipping ahead.
Meddy and Nathan are planning a destination wedding in Oxford, England after their reunion in the last book. The book dives straight in with wedding planning, i.e. the different ways the the Auntie's can meddle with the wedding – from them choosing wacky outfits to springing surprise wedding vendors on the couple.
The interplay between the Aunts is what delivers the best comedic moments. As a Brit, I was cracking up with their attempts at British slang while they were in Oxford and the 'gentle' competition between the four of them. Jesse Q. Sutanto does an amazing job of giving each aunt a unique personality that it's a delight to see how each of them react to the many 'situations' that arise through the book, like creating a diversion at the wedding (Tai Chi is involved, naturally.)
I'm conflicted with Meddy's character – I was frustrated with her rash decisions throughout the book but it all comes full circle when she realises being one and the same with her aunts is actually an important part of her. II would have loved to see Nathan play more of an active role in the caper than the 'handsome guy who just lets Meddy be Meddy' after his minimal role in the first book, but it is great to have a woman-oriented plot.
As with Dial A for Aunties, you can't take this book too seriously – you have to suspend some belief and strap in for the ride. The pacing of the book was a bit up and down – the the entertainment factor of the relentless chaos started to wane for me during the wedding itself, but it did wrap everything up with a neat bow at the end.
Despite its pacing issues, it's perfect for a quick read when you’re in the mood for lighthearted silliness with a bit of heart.
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the advance copy of this book to review!
The sequel to Dial A For Aunties, Four Aunties and a Wedding keeps up the humour, even at Meddy’s wedding!
Meddy and Nathan are getting married! They have the perfect venue in Oxford, UK (which means no extended family can attend - yay), Meddy has the perfect dress, and they have the perfect wedding vendors- a lovely family that Meddy has become fast friends with.
However, nothing ever goes to plan where Meddy’s aunties are involved. Crazy outfits, kidnappings and renegade wedding vendors all mean this will be a day Meddy will never forget..
More dark humour and hilarious catastrophes abound in this funny follow up!
Easy to read and pure entertainment, Four Aunties and a Wedding is a great book if you are looking for comedy and crazy capers.
I feel this sequel has more heart than the first. Meddy is emotionally preparing for her wedding, and encounters condescending sneers from her mother in law due to her family’s unique outlook, which makes her feel both angry and unworthy.
Despite their wackiness, Meddy realises just how alike she and her aunts are, and how she can rely on them for anything. I do feel for her as the wedding becomes a bit of a shambles, but it still wildly entertaining!
Short and sweet, this book comes in under 300 pages, making it the perfect holiday or weekend read.
It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should we. Great fun!
