Honestly, I have to say that I did have my reservations about this book - only because I loved the first book so much that I was worried the second installment simply wouldn't deliver. But boy, did it come through!
Out of all the books I have read, and all of the different authors I have discovered last year, Dial A For Aunties quickly became my favourite book, and Jesse Q. Sutanto my favourite author. Her writing style is commendable for being so unique and captivating, I cannot for the life of me even begin to wonder how she is able to craft such all-round spectacular stories.
Finishing DAFA left a giant, gaping hole in my heart that couldn't quite be filled no matter what I read, and so the second I heard of the sequel I literally could not contain my happiness. Four Aunties and a Wedding was EVERYTHING! It brought back the same unmatched humour, entertainment value, and the pleasure of being able to read DAFA - but for the second time.
It was truly the most entertaining book I have ever read, and I felt as though I could relate to Meddy - not in the sense of the mafia being at my wedding and trying to outwit them with my mother and aunts, but in the sense of the rich culture we hail from and the strong family bonds we cultivate our entire lives. Meddy is surrounded by her loving family - extremely quirky to the point that they seem like a "laughingstock", but loving in equal parts - who have demonstrated time and time again, that they would very much do ANYTHING for her. Be it cover up a murder or plot against the mafia. For all of their quirks that ultimately come from a place of love (like their English slang that honestly made me laugh out loud), she knows her family are very literally her partners in crime, and that in her crazy and unpredictable life, the ONLY thing she can truly depend on is them. And even Nathan? He was just the sweetest. He has proven multiple times that very much like her family, he also has her back. Without any questions or hesitation. The man was so sweet and understanding, that even in all the hysterics of the entire day and the events that unfolded that meant his wife (who he had literally married HOURS before) was not even with him for at least 80% of their wedding - he did not complain or argue, he just wanted to find the best way to support her and to be there for her. And I found their relationship so pure - even with the immense weight on her shoulders, Meddy's main aim (after ensuring the mafia didn't kill anyone at her wedding, of course) was to protect her husband. And that makes a book even as hilarious as Four Aunties and a Wedding, heartwarming all the same.
I was genuinely shocked when I saw I had the honour of being approved of this ARC. I could not begin to contain my excitement at being able to read an advanced copy of the sequel of one of my favourite books by one of my favourite authors. I was literally so excited from that point on, that even whilst I was reading the book I had to stop a few times to just squeal excitedly. I was a little nervous, only because it's the worst feeling in the world when you get the honour of receiving an ARC and you don't really like the book. Plus, with the sequel of my favourite book from my favourite author, a LOT was riding on this and I really did not want to be disappointed. And I definitely wasn't. It is easily one of the most hilarious books I have ever read - from the giant hats and English slang (you'll see), to how badass the aunties are, and the hilarious solutions they come up with, and everything that goes wrong in between. Four Aunties and a Wedding is a book you ABSOLUTELY have to read at least once in your life (and Dial A For Aunties, duh!) and I will NEVER stop recommending or defending it. Jesse Q. Sutanto is the gift that keeps giving.
This was SO much fun! It’s hard not to love Meddy and her family- her mother and three aunts, each more eccentric than the next.
In the first novel of this series, the Aunts helped Meddy when she accidentally killed a man right before a wedding the family were working at. This novel takes place at Meddy’s own wedding (to the disappointingly bland Nathan) where things quickly go downhill when she discovers that the wedding vendors are actually mafia planning on carrying out a hit on the big day.
There is a lot of fun to be had with taking the aunts and transplanting them to Oxford high society- particularly the slang lessons they have been taking meaning they describe everything as ‘the dog bollocks.’ Nathan’s parent, like him, pale in comparison to everyone else and his mother in particular is hard to like.
It’s a very predictable read (I could virtually tell you every plot point within the first 20 pages!) but that didn’t really lessen my enjoyment. Sutanto writes like a slightly edgier Sophie Kinsella, which is fine by me!
This is a cute and cosy read, full of whimsy. I fully understand why the characters created are much loved by readers, and think this will follow in the footsteps of the first Aunties book and prove hugely successful.
If you hate thrillers, deep dark mysteries, serial killers, etc., then this is the book for you.
As the second in the series, it does relate back to the original but is acceptable as a standalone book.
Whilst I fully appreciate its appeal, it’s not one for my tastes. I would like to award 3.5 stars, not worthy of a 4* for me.
Thank you NetGalley.
This sequel to the very funny 'Dial A for Aunties' is a riot. Our heroine Meddy and her devoted but formidable aunties (and mother) find themselves in England for her destination wedding to the love of her life, Nathan. But predictably the wedding doesn't quite go to plan and Meddy and the aunties must try to save the day as outside forces try to ruin things. This is quite hilarious and madcap but also sweet as the relationship between Meddy and the aunties is really lovely. This is such great escapism and hugely enjoyable.
We included this title in our article “22 books to look out for in 2022” on Caboodle, the rewards programme from National Book Tokens.
“This sequel to the hilarious Dial A For Aunties, in which Meddy Chan accidentally kills her blind date and turns to her aunties for help, is just as comedic and deftly written as its predecessor.“
I absolutely loved this book , it had everything to make a fantastic read , mystery lots of humour and so totally different to a lot of books I have read before. The characters were all amazing that while reading the book you could actually picture them in your mind they were so descriptive. I have not read the first book of this series but can not wait to read it. Would really recommend this as a brilliant read and really laughs out loud book.
Meddy Chan and the Aunties return for another hilarious adventure!
As Meddy prepares for her wedding to college sweetheart, Nathan, in England, disaster strikes as the mafia infiltrate the ceremony with plans to conduct their own criminal business. Meddy, her mother and three aunts have to combine their talents again to foil the nefarious plot and save her special day.
I couldn’t wait to read Four Aunties and a Wedding after enjoying the original book so much and it doesn’t disappoint.
The plot is as crazy and over the top as ever and the zaniness of the family and their behaviour is so enjoyable. Meddy also continues to be very likeable and her inner monologue is hysterical.
Chaos, cultural differences, the mafia and a whole barrel full of family love – what more could you want from a colourful, light-hearted story. Highly recommended!
I am so glad the aunties are back!! Four Aunties and a Wedding keeps the same pace and energy as Dial A for Aunties with a storyline just as outrageous, only this time set in the UK. The aunties are consistent and just as charming as before. I really appreciated the way Sutanto lightly explored the myths of the perfect immigrant and highlighted the fact that everyone's experience is not the same - and the danger that comes when people assume it is. I can't wait for the aunties' next adventure!
Thank you to NetGalley, the Author and the Publisher with providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book is the sequel to 'Dial A For Aunties', which I haven't yet read but have heard lots about. I don't think the fact I hadn't read the first book impacted on my understanding of what's going on in this book, though, as I still thoroughly enjoyed it!
I laughed my way through this book and read it in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. There were some serious moments, but the comedic timing was excellent and the book was well-paced. I found the characters to be three-dimensional and fascinating to follow.
In summary, this was an excellent book and I can't wait to read more from this author!
Dial A for Aunties was one of my favourite reads of 2021 so I was thrilled when I was invited to read an e-arc of Four Aunties and a Wedding. This sequel has the same bonkers energy as the first and I loved it.
Meddy and her aunts are back and once again find themselves against the odds in an increasingly off – the -wall scenario. The aunts seem to relish the bizarre turn of events and the opportunity to (badly) sneak around and try to take control of an out of control situation.
Meddy gets swept along by her aunts again, as she tries to rein in some of their more outlandish ideas, even as she navigates through her own wedding while trying to enjoy the day and not let on to Nathan what is going on.
Beneath all the high drama, there is a quieter story happening of marriages between different cultures – even though Meddy and Nathan are both Chinese-Indonesian they were raised in very different ways, with Nathan’s parents much more westernised. Nathan and Meddy just want everyone to get on but it isn’t that easy. Meddy herself is also undergoing a journey of finding out just where she fits with her family – she wants them to fit in but is fiercely defensive of their right to be themselves. Sometimes working out where you stand is the hardest thing.
A laugh out loud sequel, I loved spending more time with Meddy and her family. As with Dial A for Aunties, Four Aunties and a Wedding strikes just the right note between the sublime and the ridiculous. Komodo Dragon shaped fascinators should definitely be a thing…
I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ for an advance copy of Four Aunties and a Wedding, the second novel to feature Meddy Chan and her extended family.
Meddy is marrying Nathan, the love of her life, in Christ Church College, Oxford. She has the dress and a destination wedding (to discourage the cousins from attending), so what could possibly go wrong? With her aunties involved who knows?
Four Aunties and a Wedding is the first novel in the series that I have read, so I didn’t know what to expect. I would say that it works as a stand-alone and is self contained, so I thoroughly enjoyed it as it is funny, slightly anarchic and fast moving.
Any resemblance to reality in this novel is a coincidence. It runs through a series of events that get more farcical and outrageous as the novel progresses. It is clever and imaginative, but, above all, funny. Everyone knows that weddings are stressful but this is a whole new level for Meddy, her aunts not so much. I’m not going to spoil the read, but one bad scenario seems to lead to an even worse one.
Meddy is the straight man in this novel, the regular person who plays the foil to her unconventional mum and aunties. She is a product of Los Angeles, they of Indonesia and they haven’t become culturally assimilated. The culture clash is at the root of the characterisation and the humour comes from their antics and Meddy’s embarrassment at them. This could have gone disastrously wrong, but it is clearly written with love rather than derision. I love the aunties, who are strong, independent women with their own way of doing things. No matter how outrageous their behaviour or how much mayhem they cause it is done for the right reasons, a strong desire to make Meddy happy. In fact I can see my own approach to auntie-ing in them before I got promotion to Great Aunt with the attendant seniority and gravitas, ok, I got old and tired.
My only niggle with the novel is that the aunties get stuck in their foibles so it gets a bit repetitive. Fortunately there is always a new scenario for them to tackle so the repetition gets taken over by events.
Four Aunties and a Wedding is a fun read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Yes!!! Awesome book and I loved it 😍
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this book in exchange for my feedback.
Dial A for Aunties had to be one of the most purely fun reads in 2021. Four Aunties and a Wedding comes in close second to that. If you haven’t picked this series up yet, let me tell you, you are doing life wrong.
This installment follows Meddy as she gets married to Nathan. Only, it turns out that all is not as it seems with the wedding planners, when Meddy overhears a phone conversation. Now Meddy and her family have to do their best to stop what seems to be an assassination in the middle of her wedding, while she gets married. What follows is, frankly, pure chaos in the best way.
Without being too spoilery, here’s a list of my favourite aspects of this book:
— Meddy and her aunts, of course! They were the best part of the first book, and they’re the best part of this one as well. Not only do they have some great chaotic moments (a highlight is the various accidental kidnappings), they also have some excellent family moments. And, of course, Nathan is involved here to an extent too.
— The plot. Frankly, this is about as chaotic as you can imagine based on the blurb. Okay, so it’s not quite as laugh out loud funny as Dial A for Aunties, but it comes close. And it all becomes that much funnier with the reveal at the end.
— Meddy and Nathan. Particularly, the way Nathan unquestioningly stood by Meddy throughout, firstly with his parents, and secondly when he found out everything that had gone on (which, to get a tiny bit spoilery here, I loved because he believed her from the moment she told him and, while being a little upset she lied to him, he understood where she was coming from. Finally, an adult book with some adult communication).
— The ending. Which I cannot say really anything about, except what I said before, which is that it makes the entire book all the more hilarious.
So, honestly, if this is a series you haven’t yet picked up, you need to go out and rectify that immediately. Even if you’re not a massive fan of the genre, this is one that I think anyone would love.
"Four Aunties and a Wedding" was just as much fun as the first part of the series, and just as insane.
Did it make sense? Not really.
Was it a blast to read? Absolutely.
A quick and easy read that I found myself picking up after a long day to unwind. The characters are beautifully written and I came to love them within the first few pages and was rooting for them all the way to the end. At times I wanted to stop reading because I just wanted the experience to go on for longer.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Having loved the first installment in this book series, I had high hopes for this one and it was even better than I expected! The heroine and her crazy yet highly likable family are again at their top game while preparing for upcoming nuptials, battling yet another mystery.
I absolutely loved Jesse Sutanto’s Dial A for Aunties, it was one of my favourite books of the year. So when I saw Four Aunties and a Wedding available on Netgally I had to request it, and was so excited to be approved to read it. It’s safe to say that Four Aunties and a Wedding did not disappoint and was a perfect sequel to Dial A.
After getting away with literal murder, Meddy can’t wait to get married to Nathan, the love of her life. Her wedding should be perfect, she’s got the dress, an amazing destination venue and the perfect groom, what could possibly go wrong?
First of all this book is hilarious. I’m not ashamed to admit that it had me laughing so much that I actually snorted! Sutanto’s writing is just perfect, she writes with such warmth and humour. The best part though is that you never feel as though you are laughing at the Aunties in a mean way, but with them and at the situations they find themselves in. Their attempts to learn British slang in order to impress the other guests at the wedding was as heart warming as it was absolutely hilarious.
Personally I loved the Oxford setting. Having studied and then lived in Oxford for several years, it was a joy to read about Meddy and her Aunties’ antics in a place that is so familiar to me. Sutanto really captured the essence of Oxford in her story.
It goes without saying that I loved Meddy and her Aunties, as with the first novel they are simply a joy to read. I will admit this time that I felt sorry for Nathan and the situation he was in, but I also understand why Meddy did what she did.
When reading this book it’s so important to read Sutanto’s author’s letter first. She explains her desire to explore the Asian diaspora within her novel and this was done so thoughtfully. As a reader we are reminded that to be Asian can mean so many different things depending of where a person is from, when they left, where they settle and how much they have integrated into the new cultural environment. This was highlighted especially between the interactions of the Aunties and Nathan’s parents, particularly his mum. This was so well done and it really was heartbreaking to read the way that Annie spoke about the Aunties, and yet they remained true to themselves throughout, something Meddy came to appreciate even more.
A wonderful book and a fantastic sequel.
Revisiting my favourite family as they head to Oxford for Meddy's wedding, this book is just as fun and raucous as its predecessor. Nothing goes to plan, and every misstep leads to even more laughs. I also completely adore the unwavering acceptance and love that this family has for one another - its exactly the pick me up I needed on a rainy day!
By the way, where can I find my own Nathan? I don't think I've ever read a man so perfect!
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I read the first in this series and my thoughts were roughly, this is cute and fun, wildly ridiculous and unrealistic but if I take it as face value it's some fun.
I have almost the exact same thoughts about this sequel - the chances of any of these events ever happening? Zero! But the aunties are much more charming even in this one, I found myself becoming a bit more attached to the characters than the first book.
It's not a ground breaking piece of literature but it's also not trying to be - good fun with some nice representation.
I read the first book and loved I! This one followed the first! Loved the relationship between Meddy and her aunts! A good story and enjoyed all the laugh out bits too much
