My first book by Cathy Bramley but will not be my last. It is about 3 women of different ages that became great friends that helped each other through bad times. This was a really uplifting book that I wanted to pick up and read all the time. Highly recommended read.
I loved this book about a trio of women who all lived by the sea in Merle Bay but didn't know each other until they bumped into each other on the beach (a very funny meeting) and started a wonderful friendship.
The three ladies are Katie, owner of Auntie Small's lingerie shop, who had a secret from her younger days that resurfaces. Then there's Robyn, her husband is a local fisherman, she's recently gone through a traumatic surgery and they are struggling to move on. And finally there's Grace, who has recently lost her husband and has come to Merle Bay to reassess her life, but a secret comes to light that has her doubting her whole marriage.
The whole story is just so wonderful, three women who previously didn't know one another becoming great friends and helping each other talk through their issues, drink gin(!), laugh, and finally overcome any issues and move on with their lives. They are all women you'd love to be friends with, down to earth, funny and compassionate.
This was just a really lovely feeling book that made me want to live in Merle Bay and be part of the Sea Glass Sisterhood!
An absolutely gripping tale of three women who come together and become firm friends helping and supporting each other through difficult times. Merle Bay sounded like a wonderful place to live and those cottages sounded delightful. It was both funny and touching in equal measure. I didn't want it to end I was enjoying it so much.
The Summer That Changed Us is just gorgeous. A story about friendship, the strength of women and the power that comes with speaking your truth and living authentically.
Grace, Robyn and Katie meet quite randomly on Sea Glass Beach and they form an instant bond. All going through difficult times, they find solace and laughter and comfort with one another.
As they navigate their way together through their own problems, they find an inner strength they forgot they possessed. And it was so so lovely to watch each woman blossom and find happiness again.
I finished this book with smile on my face and joy in my heart.
A light feelgood boo ideal for that holiday read which was thoroughly enjoyable. A definite female friendship and solidarity book encompassing many issues facing women of all ages today. Delightful three main characters with a core age between late twenties to mid forties plus some more peripheral female characters mid-teens and mid sixties which could have been made more. There are, of course a few men for balance, all of whom are identifiable. Wonderfully set in a small coastal town in the northeast which provide a perfect backdrop.
This is the story of three strangers who become good friends. In Merle Bay Katie runs Auntie Smalls, the lingerie shop she inherited from her Auntie Jean. Robyn lives with her husband Finn McGill one of the last fishermen in the bay and is recovering from major health issues. Grace is staying at Sea Glass House, hoping to recover from the sudden death of her husband, Myles.
Each of the women have issues that they don't feel able to discuss with their nearest and dearest but after the get together they find the strength to face their problems and to be positive about the future.
The Summer that Changed Us is a lovely warm story of female friendship and how close friends support us and enable to see ourselves as others see us.
I absolutely adored this book. The setting was fabulous and I wanted to go and live there. The characters were great and I wanted to be in their gang. The storyline was brilliant and the friendship that the women formed was wonderful and realistic. And the way that they helped each other get through their issues was inspirational. There were some really strong messages that came through.
All in all, it was a fabulous feel-good read, incredibly inspirational, showing that through friendship and love, you can get through the things that life throws at you and even be given a second chance to live your best life. I adored everything about this book. For me it had everything a book should have.
Katie, Robyn and Grace meet one day on the beach when Grace needs rescuing. They form a kind of club so they have someone to talk to and share secrets with, as they all have something they are struggling with.
I think my favourite character has to be Amber
This is a lovely story about how 3 women become friends in the most unlikely of accidents. All three are dealing with their own traumas, from bereavement, illness and blackmail. This story talks of how they support each other through these.
This was very enjoyable story, a must read for fans of Cathy Bramley.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Grace has come to stay at Merle Bay to try to comes to terms with her widowhood, she is struggling with coming to terms with her husband's premature loss. She finds comfort when encountering and making friends with two local women. Robyn, who is having a rocky time due to health reasons which have been impacting on her marriage to local fisherman Finn and Katie who has found refuge in the small seaside town from childhood trauma and now runs Auntie Small's lingerie shop. Enjoyable story everything you would expect from the superb Cathy Bramley.
This was different to Cathy’s previous books, but equally enjoyable. Three women meet up by chance at a seaside town on the Northumberland coast. Each of them has problems and with their growing friendship, trust each other with secrets unspoken until then. They find solace in the sharing, highlighting the importance of female friendship. Important and serious issues are covered- cancer surgery, bereavement, and period poverty but all with a light and sensitive touch. There is humour too and it all flowed so beautifully it was a joy to read; an emotional roller coaster.
Thanks to Orion and NetGalley for an ARC in return for an unbiased opinion,
3 women who need friends to confide in, knowing whatever they say will go no further. A wonderful story of true friendship and love.
I loved this wonderful book and the friendship at the heart of it. Packed full of emotion as well as being thought provoking. I want to move to Merle and be friends with the characters.
This is an engaging read which makes you read with enjoyment despite you being able to foresee how the story is going to evolve. The characters are well drawn and you feel empathy for and involvement in their ongoing situations.
OMG I really wish I could give this 10 stars! What’s a book.
This has definitely been my favourite Cathy Bramley. The Summer That Changed us is a beautifully written magical story of love, support and friendship.
When 3 strangers meet one summer on the beach The Seaglass Sisterhood is created. Katie, Robyn and Grace are all holding back secrets which they think they can never share but after finding each other they learn to confide and share their worries with each other. Friendship is the most precious gift and the support they give each other is very moving.
Robyn’s story is one close to my heart and I totally relate to how important having strong friendships can give you support when you need it.
I can’t praise this book enough, it made me cry as it was just such a beautiful book.
Thanks you Cathy for writing this book,
Thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing for giving me an ARC of this book.
3 women Grace, Robyn and Katie who don't know each other meet on Seaglaass beach in Merle Bay, at least Robyn and Kate meet but go to the rescue of Grace who has fallen in the holiday home she staying in and can't get up.
All 3 have got personal issues to work through but have been keeping it to themselves, as they become friends they share each others stories and help each other work through them
Absolutely loved it, a definite must read
When you pick up a Cathy Bramley book you know you are in for a good read and this book has to be one of her best. Three women who become friends and are able to share the problems they are each struggling with. They call themselves the seaglass sisters and as their friendship grows they help and support each other through their difficulties. This should be a ten star review, I can’t praise it enough. Each time I finish a Cathy Bramley book I eagerly await the next
Wonderfully uplifting book about female friendship. A real 5 star read, covering lots of subjects really well like grief and adultary. One of Cathy Bramley's best. Thank you netgalley for the advance copy
The story of three women who are each coming to terms with traumatic events who meet by chance and forge a friendship that will carry them through the toughest of times
Katie runs a lingerie shop left to her by her beloved Aunt. Very good at her job but scared to trust anyone because of an incident when she was a teenager.
Grace has moved into a friend's house in Merle Bay while she is struggling to come to terms with her husband's death. She thinks their relationship was perfect but is anything ever what it seems.
Robyn is recovering from major surgery, still in shock at what she has been through, her husband is treating her like a patient instead of a wife and she doesn’t know how to get things back to how they were.
They spend time together walking on the beach, collecting sea glass and telling each other their deepest secrets they form a bond that will enable them all to move on with their lives.
This book covers subjects as diverse as bereavement, period poverty and cancer with sensitivity, tact and humour. Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you to Netgalley and Orion for an early copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I loved this book, it's possibly my most favourite of Cathy Bramley's so far. Hard hitting when it needs to be, it also made me laugh, which I felt was a perfect mix.
A definite 5 star review for me and I've already been recommending it to others.
