Too much of a slow burner. Not the book I was expecting to read. The synopsis made it sound better than I thought it was.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I couldn’t wait to see how the story developed.
This was well written, but unfortunately I found it really hard to care about any of the characters who all seemed quite cliched and I didnt find the plot particularly original.
thank you to netgalley and Bloomsbury for an advance copy of this book
Liv Travers never knew real friendship until she met fellow mums Beth and Binnie. The three women become inseparable as they muddle through early parenthood together. Then along comes Ange... Ambitious, wealthy and somehow able to do it all. Under Ange’s guiding presence, the group finds new vigor and fresh aspirations – bigger houses, better schools, dinners at exclusive restaurants. But Liv can’t keep up and is increasingly edged out. When the four families take a three-week trip to a luxurious holiday resort, Liv seizes the opportunity to reclaim her place at the heart of the group, only to discover the true, devastating cost of a friendship with Ange. Set over the course of a single, life-changing trip to a Greek island paradise, Little Nothings is a sly, suspenseful novel about female bonds turned toxic, and the desperate ends one woman will go to keep her friends close – and her enemy closer.
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own hone\st voluntary review.
Liv is friends with Binnie and Beth they are all happy with their frienship , their husband's get on and so do the children. Enter Ange who works with Beth and is welcomed into the group with her family. Ange however likes to spend money and encourages the others to follow her including private schools for the kids and designer clothes as well as spa days and frequent lunch or evening meals at her newly ex tended house. Ange seems to like listening to the conversations about things which have happened in the past with the women, and tries to join in with the inside jokes!! They all go on holiday to Corfu for three weeks, but Liv is already beginning to suspect Ange is not all she seems to be. Will the friendships survive the holiday? Just who have they all become and are they the same people now as when they met?
Loved this book, a bit of a slow start but really got going! Would love to see this as a tv mini series. Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this and to Julie for writing it. Would love another instalment!! Will be recommending to friends and family.
This was a fast paced chatty story that was hard to put down.
The book is very well written but I just couldn’t gel with the characters perhaps it was a little too dark and twisty for me. Absolutely loved the Setting in Corfu even if the characters drove me mad!
I’d recommend reading with a plate of delicious Greek olives and cheese.
My first novel by author Julie Mayhew and I did enjoy it. Quite similar to Liane Moriaty novels I think personally and a good story. Not as gripping as what I first thought after reading the blurb but nonetheless still a good rea.
We meet Liv who meets two other mums - Beth and Bennie at a local group and then Ange. With Ange in their friendship group, then things start to change They become the best of friends and go on holiday together along with all of their families.
This novel is definitely what other reviewers have said - chatty/gossipy, it did feel like what you would see on a TV show.
Lots of different things occur and Liv narrates the novel in the present day and also from the past. A good and intriguing beach read.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for allowing me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Liv finds two friends at a playgroup that make her feel complete. They are as close as friends can be until one of them invites another friend, Ange, into the group. The dynamics change and Liv feels left out. A trip to Greece for the friends and their families tests everything. What lengths will some of them go to to protect their friendships. A devious tale with lots of suspense.
Little Nothings is a book to read from behind the safety of a cushion! You don't like what you are reading but are simultaneously hooked, be warned.
On many levels this starts out of a book of our times. Liv has always been an outsider since childhood and struggled to make friends but then she meets Beth and Binnie at a local playgroup and finds her tribe. All goes well until Ange moves into the group. Ange is wealthy and casual get togethers now mean more cost, money which Liv & Pete don't have. Then Ange comes up with the idea for a holiday in Corfu which the pair definitely can't afford...
This book gets far darker than I expected and it is certainly full of tension. For lovers of a fast moving narrative, this is a must-read!
Loved this story about 3 best friends Liv, Beth, Binnie who have a very close relationship and help one another through parenthood.
This changes when Ange who is wealthy and a likes to take charge. Things start to change as she takes over and influences Beth & Binnie to get bigger houses and better schools for their children while Liv stays the same and can see Ange for what she is and taking over. When Ange decides to have a three week holiday in Corfu Liv has to agree to go even though they can't really afford it.
This is a great psychological story about friendships and how one person can change everything.
Highly recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley & Bloomsbury Publishing for a advanced copy.
I was expecting this to be a bit of Shirley Valentine goes rogue, but in the end I found the jumps between one time setting to another too abrupt and it left me quite confused, to the point I didn't enjoy it at all. Sorry!
A thrilling read! 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I couldn’t put this book down, I just had to know how it ended! I love an unreliable, unpredictable narrator that brings a realistically flawed character to life; and Liv did just that. You do, however, end up liking Liv less and less as she continues her journey of revenge – but perhaps that’s the appeal – for too long we’ve had perfect one-dimensional characters – here, is something real and shocking.
Although a little of a slow burner at first, this novel is well written and engaging and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good psychological thriller. As always, thank you to Bloomsbury Publishing, Raven Books, Julie Mayhew, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Little Nothings is a cautionary tale of always wanting more, striving to fit in and following the herd.
After struggling to make friends her whole life, Liv finally finds her tribe in Beth and Binnie, two mums she meets and bonds with at a baby group. But soon, there is an interloper in the form of the ultimate 'frenemy', Ange. Ange is capable and charismatic, and soon the group are caught up in a loop of one-upmanship with bigger houses, private schools and a luxury lifestyle. But someone has to pay for this lifestyle, and soon it all comes crashing down on Liv.
A group holiday is billed as the perfect start for a comeback, but when forced together in close proximity for 3 weeks with the alcohol flowing and inhibitions lowered, it isn't long before home truths are aired and tensions are raised, resulting in a holiday none of them will ever forget.
The story flits between past and present, giving an insight into Liv's mind and motivations. But is Liv reliable? I enjoy a story with an unreliable narrator as it keeps me second guessing what I think I know throughout. I didn't particularly like Liv, but I found her relatable in her search for true friendships and the need to fit in. The setting was idyllic, which only served to make events even darker as they unfolded. I wanted to shake Beth and Binnie, who felt a little two dimensional and only there to develop the relationship between Ange and Liv, and were oblivious to the sniping events going on around them, particularly after one event about 2/3 of the way through the book (without giving spoilers!) which is the catalyst for the ending.
It was engaging and easy to read. I felt like some aspects could have been explored further, such as the relationship between Clara and Alex, and I kept waiting for something to happen with a snake! The ending was deliberately unsatisfactory, in a world where readers have come to expect some kind of comeuppance - was it the right person who got their comeuppance? - and left me with the message that you should always think carefully about what it is that you want, as sometimes you just might get it.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I was going to, It starts off quite slowly with flashbacks between the present and the events leading up to the three week holiday in Greece. As the story gradually builds you start to get a real sense of the characters and their shared history. The tension then starts to build at a pace as you realise where this story is heading and it heads to its perfect climax! A really enjoyable read.
Liv has always struggled to make friends and it’s not until she meets Beth and Binnie that she feels she has friends for life. However, once Ange comes on the scene, she seems to be stealing Beth and Binnie away from Liv and always putting Liv down in a shuttle way. When they all go on holiday as families, the true dynamics come out leading Liv to behave in a strange way!
.Overall, a good read.
Little Nothings was an ok read but it wasn't the thriller I was expecting, I thought it more of a beach read. It was a bit of a slow burner to begin with with characters I just couldn't get on with. Unfortunately it just wasn't for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for my ARC.
Malevolent!
This book is dark and unsettling from the start. Set over a short period it follows the lives of a group of friends who go on holiday together. They used to be a group of 3 families, but when Ange joined the dynamics are thrown and Liv feels she is being ousted.
The story is told from Liv’s point of view and I was fully engrossed in her world view.
A great story about friendship, loneliness and acceptance. It will have you hooked.
From an editing point of view the chapters are long, only 6 in the whole book! The lack of capital letters was annoying.
Brilliant read and loved the settings - very easy to read and get quickly involved with and then didn.t want to stop reading until had finished - really enjoyed it
I was hooked from the start. I couldn’t put it down, a complete page turner that I didn’t want to end!
A story of friendship, identity and deceit, this is an incredibly written psychological thriller that had me gripped and reading late into the night with enjoyment and interest. This story is told from Liv’s viewpoint, and the characters within the friendship circle will be relatable to many readers making it work brilliantly.
The scenery is beautifully set by this author’s elegant writing style, but soon laced with a tense atmosphere, it can keep the reader fully invested and engaged.
