The first book was incredibly heartwarming and in my very teenage eyes was the best ya book I had ever picked up, and so, three years later, seeing there was a sequel, I was very skeptical, as I wasn't sure where the story would go.
The story was enjoyable and nostalgic, there were constantly references to places that had been mentioned, or were pivotal in the Arthur and Ben journey, which was really nice to see, as not every single detail of the first book was ironed into my memory.
The characters were also all still the same, the friendship group were fun and chaotic, Dylan was even more annoying and outgoing, but unlike everyone else, I see it as endearing and actually really liked Dylan as a character. The intense friendship between Dylan and Ben was one of the highlights of the book, and I found myself smiling at a lot of the conversations they shared. It was nice to see the side characters take more of a central role in this book.
The pacing at times became difficult for me to continue reading, there wasn't a lot happening in the beginning of the book, it just seemed to be a lot of third wheeling, and awkwardness, with a lot of tension between Arthur, Ben and the new boyfriends, which became repetitive. Thankfully the story does pick up, and there seems to be more of a point to there being a sequel.
The book covers a lot of important topics about relationships and every day life that I think teenagers will really benefit from. Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli did a great job at balancing the overall tone of the book, and extending a well loved story.
This was a really well written and enjoyable book, and I am definitely going to buy a physical copy and re read it whenever I need a lighthearted pick me up.
