This is definitely a dark and gritty read. It is not for the faint hearted!
I have to admit that it took me a little while to get into this book. There is a huge cast of characters, and I found that a little difficult to keep track of at first.
However, once I was into it, I began to love following these lively, dangerous and determined individuals. I particularly enjoyed the tension between Samantha and Seb.
There are some shocking and violent scenes, which definitely took me by surprise at times. Obviously this is a gangland thriller, so you’d expect such scenes, but Edie does a good job of, at times, dropping these unexpected metaphorical bombs on you when you don’t expect it!
Overall, a gritty and at times explosive and tense read perfect for fans of Kerry Kaya and Sam Michaels.
What a ride! It’s my first book by the author and I’m so looking forward to read more by her from now on.
I love reading stories that involve rivalry families and this one ticked all my boxes.
Samantha is a bada** heroine and while she's still trying to get the hang of her new role in the family's business and hierarchy, she's witty and beautiful and smart and also feminine and vulnerable.
So many twists in this pulse racing story, lies and secrets unveiled, love stories from the past and new ones building up, so much drama and I'm here for all of it.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley.
I enjoy a gritty, gangster read. Like most books of this theme there are a lot of characters but they are introduced slowly so you dont get lost. Addictive reading as the plotline thickens and you get to learn more about the brilliant cast. Fast paced it keeps you interested from start to finish. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
This was the first book I’ve read by this author and it was very enjoyable. There were seem good twists and turns that kept my attention. I look forward to the next in the series.
HFN....
But, so many ends hanging I hope there is another book coming out. I really enjoyed Seb and Sam trying to find their way thru all the drama. There were so many twists and turns and drama galore that you never knew which way was up.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy.
Wow-what a brilliant introduction to this author Takeover was. I am delighted to see there are other books for me to catch up on.
This is a gangland crime and I adored it from start to finish. There is a brief intro before speeding forward 30 years as Samantha gets ready for her Birthday at her fathers' casino. Samantha is sort of aware that there are things about his business she does really know about, but her focus is on building her own career as a graphic designer.
As the synopsis suggests, she is definitely plunged in at the deep end and has to learn the ropes fast when she unexpectedly finds herself at the helm of her fathers business. She does have support, but it is up to her to find out who she can trust!
This is where the author did an amazing job of not only throwing a wonderful twist in the early stages but also delivering a great deal of intrigue and mistrust from the first few chapters. Being a gangland story there is more than one family in the area, so there are a few characters to get to know as well as the hangers-on. I do think the author has kept the main players to the key roles and has other loitering with intent around the edges.
Family is key in these Birmingham based businesses, but when things start to get tough then it is those that are close to you who can know which buttons to press. With family tensions and also areas being taken over the intensity does build.
As this is my first time with this author I was interested to see different elements in her story, the intensity is not only within the thriller side of the story but also in a rather tasty romantic side. Something I wasn't expecting but it definitely added another edge.
I adored this story a lot and if you like hard-hitting, gangland, crime thrillers then this will be one for you to look out for. I am so glad I read this one and it gives me another author to add to my list. Takeover is a book I would definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed this domestic drama by Edie Baylis. Insight into the darker side of some business establishments. Complex characters that made me feel invested in the story.
Highly recommend
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
This is my first book by Baylis and I found it to be a brilliant start to what I think will be a gripping new gangland crime series.
The book tells the story or rivalry and alliances in the Casino world of the Reynolds & Stoker families.
Takeover is written in multiple perspectives, while the overall story is not anything new it is still a highly enjoyable read. If you like authors such as Martina Cole and Jessie Keane then this is definitely a book worth reading. I am looking forward to the second book to follow in the story of Sam and Seb especially.
Two Gangland Families the Stokers and the Reynolds are rivals but work amicably together.Samantha Reynolds learns on her birthday that her father has made her his heir something she never wanted as she has her own life plans. But her cousin is not a happy man at the news as he wants it all but he is not the only person interested in this news.Great book look forward to the next.5*
Another addictive book from a must read author. family rivalry is at the centre of this one. There are a number of threads which make up the plot of this and each are presented in a way you are trying to work out what will happen.
This has been an interesting, intriguing and addictive read which has kept my attention from the very first page. I have found myself completely caught up in this one.
This is an author who will engage the reader with the writing and make you feel as though you are watching events play out. This is fast paced and filled with a mix of characters.
I have loved this book and Edie Baylis is a must read author.
Daddy's girl, Samantha Reynold hadn't bargained on unexpectedly needing to step into her father's shoes and take over the family casino business. Pampered and spoiled, Sam knows nothing about the rules of this glamourous but deadly new world. She has a lot to learn and even more to prove. But she won't let her family down, especially when it looks like they could loose everything to their biggest rivals - the Stoker family.
This is a fantastic start to a new gangland crime series. The Reynolds and the Stokers are Rivals. Sam Reynold has recently taken over their family's casino business but Seb Stoker will stop at nothing to take over Sam's casino business. There is a lot of information at the beginning of the book but don't let that put you off. Once you get into the storyline it becomes gripping. There's several; threads to this book and it's told from multiple perspectives. Sam is being helped by a rival family member but can she really trust him? This is a fast paced read and I'm looking forward to reading more books in this new series.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks and the author #EdieBaylis for my ARC of #Takeover in exchange for an honest review.
A fabulous book that has a really good storyline. Lots of unsavoury characters and underhand dealings going on. A little mystery running through.
I love this authors work,
And this gangland fiction was absolutely so gripping from the start.
The Reynolds and Stokers are rivals, and all the characters grow on you as you read. A good start to the series and I look forward to what's in store in book two. Absolutely brilliant.
Never read this author before but I will definitely be reading more of her books . This book was brilliant and been set in Birmingham a bonus. I will definitely be reading the rest of her books . Highly recommend this author .
Absolutely brilliant!!!! Edie Baylis really knows what readers want from a gangland storyline!! From the very first page I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I cannot wait for the next one. Highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood books for this ARC. This was a gripping, fast-paced, high-octane story of 2 rival families, especially Stephanie as she comes to terms with her new role. There's a lot going on at the start of the book, lots of characters are brought in but as long as you keep on top of who's who, you're fine! Great descriptions, you can really picture yourself right there in gangland and you'll be hooked till the end. Can't wait to read the next one.
Loved reading Gangland Fiction for a long time now and Edie is one of the best in the genre. If you enjoy reading the likes of Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers, then this is definitely a book you'd enjoy. Takeover is a fantastic start to a new series and I'll be looking forward to the next one. Fast paced and gripping, once you start reading you may as well forget about doing anything else because this is gangland fiction at it's finest and you'll just want to keep reading.
This is one of those books that has A LOT going on! In the beginning there is a huge amount of information given to you but trust me you want to keep reading! Once the story gets going and everything starts coming together it is really good! With so much going on the author does an amazing job bringing everything together! With the ending the way it was you know there's going to be another one! It'll be interesting to see what happens next! Happy reading everyone!
The Reynolds and Stokers are rival families in a glamorous but dangerous world.
After her father dies Samantha Reynolds life is torn apart and she finds herself having to take over the family casino business.
She has no idea how things work but is determined to learn and prove she's up to the job.She won't lose all her family has made to the Stokers.
Seb is the oldest Stoker son and a man to be reckoned with, his not willing to stand by and give Samantha time to play at being boss, but sometimes people grow on you.
Other parties are ready to tear apart everything both families have once and for all.
A BRILLIANT READ the pace was fast and gripping throughout.
I was left wanting more so hopefully there's another instalment very soon.
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood books for the ARC
When I first started reading Takeover, I wasn't sold. I felt like we were introduced to far too many characters at once and I was constantly having to wrack my brain and rewind to previous pages to figure out who was part of which family / gang and what was going on. Once I overcame that hurdle and finally figured out who each character was and their relation to each other, however, I was hooked! My goodness, what an eventful read!
I can vividly picture the environment the book took place and each and every character felt real. I definitely have a soft spot for the lovely Len (🥺) & Gloria and look forward to seeing how the relationship blossoms (or potentially explodes!) between Sam & Seb.
I love that the story has been left unfinished and there's most definitely room for a sequel so fingers crossed that is on its way!
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Bolks for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review 📖
