DS Maeve Kerrigan & DC Georgia Shaw are called out to the discovery of a body in a hospital car park. Dr Hassan Dawoud has been found dead in his car & it looks like foul play. The investigation begins but it's not long before Maeve is pulled away into an undercover assignment.

Jellicoe Close seems like the perfect place to live but there are hidden tensions & dangers of a criminal nature. Maeve goes undercover with DI Josh Derwent & they have to live together in Jellicoe Close as house sitters & convince the neighbours they are a loving couple. The lines between professional & personal are about to be very blurred indeed.

Two parallel cases in this one but neither of them really mattered (to me anyway). I managed to narrow down the Jellicoe Close case to 2 suspects fairly early on, but let's face it - I'm here for Kerrwent!

Now, I'm not usually one for reading romance but Jane Casey has me in a chokehold with the smouldering attraction between Josh Derwent & Maeve Kerrigan. There's witty banter galore, flirtatious moments, & more chemistry than your average science lab. It's like peak Maddie Hayes/David Addison in the first 2 seasons of Moonlighting. It was by turns intense sexual tension & frustrating communication but never less than a gripping read. 4.5 stars (rounded up)

A Gripping, unputdownable thriller!! The Close by Jane Casey is nothing short of a masterclass in crime fiction. From the very first page, Casey weaves an intricately plotted mystery that kept me guessing until the final twist. The writing is crisp, atmospheric, and full of tension, perfectly capturing the unease lurking beneath the surface of an idyllic suburban neighbourhood.

Detective Maeve Kerrigan shines in this instalment, balancing her sharp instincts with her relatable vulnerability, making her a character you root for. The dynamics between the characters are layered and believable, adding emotional weight to an already compelling plot.
What stands out most is how Casey expertly builds suspense, dropping breadcrumbs of clues and red herrings, making it impossible to put the book down. The twists are perfectly timed, and just when you think you’ve figured it out, another surprise hits.

Whether you’re a fan of the series or new to Jane Casey’s work, The Close is a must-read. It’s gripping, smart, and flawlessly executed—a true gem for crime fiction lovers. Highly recommended! Thank you NetGalley UK for an advanced copy.

A suspenseful and engaging thriller with plenty of twists to keep you hooked. The writing is sharp and taut, and the plot had me guessing right until the end. I really enjoyed the mystery at the heart of the story, and the character development added depth to the experience. While the pacing slowed in a few places, it was still a solid 4-star read that kept me intrigued throughout.

The story of the Close follows Maeve as she navigates the ever-as complicated combination of her personal life and her private life. With easy to read chapters, I thoroughly enjoyed The Close. The inclusion of modern day slavery played offences mirror real-life new stories and is written in a way reader's understand th depth of the depravity of it.

Casey's writing is as enjoyable from her first book with plotinus that are carefully written, accurately presented and witty to keep you captivated.

One of my all time favourite crime novels. I loved the different take on the plot here, and the depiction of what should’ve been a nice place to live. Had me questioning my neighbours!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
I haven't read any other books in this series but there was sufficient detail to understand previous events. Clearly Maeve and Josh have a history, and the undercurrents in their relationship developed well alongside the complex cases they were dealing with. The cases were interesting and twisted and I loved the dynamic between Josh and Maeve. I completely recommend this book, I've signed up to follow the author, and will be looking for more by this author.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and although this isn't the first in this particular series, this didn't spoil the novel for me. It is really well written, with an engaging and interesting plot, that had me wanting to read on. The characters are all very well drawn and feel authentic. Very much enjoyed this.

Fast paced and gripping police procedural.

I'm a huge fan of the Maeve Kerrigan series, which is a brilliantly written mixture of police procedural combined with Maeve's personal life and inner thoughts.

The dialogue is realistic and the story flows smoothly to encompass a number of plot lines.

Still coming to terms with her assault, Maeve is struggling to get to grips with an investigation into a death which may be linked to domestic violence. Initially reluctant, Maeve agrees to go undercover with a colleague to investigate the circumstances which led to the death of a vulnerable person.

The sexual tension is palpable as they uncover more than they expect with the investigation spreading into crimes relating to domestic violence, child abuse and modern slavery

In this book Maeve goes undercover with her colleague to see if they can solve a crime. I didn’t realise that this book was number 10 in a series but I’m so going back to start this series because it was fantastic. I loved the relationship between Maeve and her partner and I’d love to see if this is build upon on previous books. I liked the two crimes and how they were built into the story - it was a fantastic plot. The is was a great police procedural read with lots of great elements - a book series that I really want to start from the beginning!

This book had a really familiar feel - so much so that I had to check if I had already read it! I absolutely loved Maeve and Josh and could not put this down. Isn’t it the BEST feeling when you find a new (to you) series to binge greedily?! Highly recommend and will definitely be reading more by Casey.

Maeve Kerrigan is struggling to get back to normal, she still suffers from headaches & feels sluggish. When a doctor is found dead in his car she finds it hard to get a grip. A vulnerable young man is found beaten & half starved. Investigations reveal that he had been staying briefly with a woman in Jellicoe Close- an upmarket residential street. It is decided that what is needed is eyes on the Close & DI Josh Derwent. & Maeve are asked to move into one of the houses as a young couple dog sitting for a resident. There is an attraction between them- how will living is such close quarters affect them? Will they manage to investigate without being found out?

Book 10 of Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent series and I recommend everyone to start at the beginning b and work your way through.

Jane Casey is back with an explosive, enjoyable and enthralling new Maeve Kerrigan crime novel that is absolutely fantastic: The Close.

Jellicoe Close looks like the perfect suburban street with its beautifully kept houses, manicured lawns and kind and friendly neighbours who look out for one another and are always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Jellicoe Close at first glance seems like the ideal place to live in, but it turns out that there is a dark and sinister underbelly bubbling underneath all this perfection. The neat front doors are hiding a ruthless monster intent on maximum chaos and destruction – and it’s up to DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent to uncover the truth.

Posing as a couple, Maeve and Josh move into the Close and as the lines between the personal and professional begin to merge, little do they realize that they’ve got far more than criminals to fear. As they begin to gather evidence and start edging ever closer to the truth, Maeve and Josh will need to stay alert and not let distraction of any kind get in the way of their investigation because someone in Jellicoe Close has murder on their mind. Can Maeve and Josh stop a dangerous criminal in time? Or will all their efforts prove groundless as this perfect-looking close is blown apart in one fell swoop by insidious evil?

Jane Casey’s The Close is crime fiction at its unputdownable best. Action-packed, fast-paced and brilliantly written, The Close is a creepy, claustrophobic and chilling page-turner full of heart-jolting twists and turns that will keep readers hooked and turning the pages until the early hours of the morning.

Maeve Kerrigan is, as always, at the top of her game and as she finds herself challenged like never before, in The Close, she will end up needing to keep her wits about her and trust her instincts if she does not want this case to be her very last one.

Dark, twisted and so good, Jane Casey’s The Close is an exciting and engrossing tale crime fiction fans will be completely captivated by.

A murder mystery thriller that you will find hard to put down! It starts off strong and doesn't let up. While I haven't read any of the other books in the series, I didn't find that it took away too much from this one. There was enough character information for me to go on. There was more romance than I was expecting but it made the story a little bit different from other thrillers.

My thanks to Harper Collins Publishing and NetGalley for a copy of “The Close” for an honest review.

I’ve enjoyed other standalone books by Jane Casey , and possibly much earlier books in this series, but something was missing for me in the reading of this.Perhaps it’s just my terrible memory but I got very confused by the different names and ,the storyline didn’t keep my attention.I also wasn’t sold on the” Will they won’t they”part , but perhaps it’s because I wasn’t invested in the couple.
I would definitely read more by this author, just not anymore from this series
