have only read one Maeve Kerrigan book before, so #10 was a bit of an odd place to start, but thanks to Netgalley I was able to read and enjoy this one. It would have helped, I think, to have understood the backstory and relationships a bit better, but saying that, the book did stand-alone well enough for me to still thoroughly enjoy it – and to add the other 8 I haven't read to the ever-growingTBR pile!
The story starts as DS Maeve Kerrigan is called in to investigate the death of consultant Hassan Dawoud, found dead in his car, parked outside the hospital he worked in. Recovering from some clearly traumatic events that have occurred prior to this incident (and presumably familiar to regular readers), Maeve is struggling with the physical after-effects – headaches, fatigue, and some emotional unrest. She is also then ordered to accompany her colleague and boss, DI Josh Derwent in an undercover sting at a close-knit community centred around Jellicoe Close where they will look into the suspicious death of a local lad with learning difficulties. To keep cover, they are to play the part of a young newly married couple, very much in love, spending a few weeks dog-sitting for one of the residents, an academic, while they are away on a work trip abroad. Pippin the dog in question, is a chaotic joy. There's obviously a history between these two – they can barely keep their hands off each other. The tension, both good and bad, is palpable and leaps off the pages.
This is definitely an exciting read, although there was quite a lot of mundane daily activity described in the undercover house, but I imagine that's how it actually feels to be living in that scenario, pretending to live a life of domestic bliss. I was quite immersed in the double investigation going on and the dynamics between Maeve and Josh, and also the developing relationship with Georgia Shaw, the DC that takes over the Dawoud case – her character development was well written and we start to see her grow as the book progresses. Her relationships with both Maeve and Josh develop and felt important to the direction of the story. After finishing this book, with its explosive finale, I am eager to go back and read the previous books in this series, and will definitely be seeking out the next when it arrives.

This is the tength book in the Maeve Kerrigan series and they just get better and better!!
DS Maeve Kerrigan is called out to a murder investigation, the victim Dr Hassan Dawoud is discovered in his car, outside the hospital where he worked.
Jellicoe Place is a nice quiet close, with immaculate houses and well kept gardens, but there are dark secrets behind these doors that may be hiding a murderer.
Maeve and Derwent are moving in posing as a couple that are house and dog sitting to uncover what happened to a young man who was found dead.
This is such a gripping read that will keep you intrigued throughout.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

D.S Maeve Kerrigan and D.I Josh Derwent have worked together for a very long time so they are the perfect pairing to go undercover as a couple in the heart of leafy suburbia. After all they bicker and jibe at each other like an old married couple 90% of the time. They are watching for any clue as to how a seemingly kind hearted old lady is abusing the trust of vulnerable adults and passing them on to be used as nothing more than slaves. They aren't aware just how many secrets the people in The Close are hiding and come across a crime much more insidious and damaging than the one they are investigating. I love this series. The dynamic between Maeve and Josh has always been a great one but there is always a little frisson of something more under the surface so I couldn't wait to see how having to act like a couple in love would affect them. There were bound to be fireworks and I wasn't disappointed although the waiting time until the next book is published is going to seem extremely long.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book

Gripping read, that had me hooked in from the beginning.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

Brilliant storyline and it kept me gripped throughout. Jane Casey has a great way of writing so you feel like you can see the houses from The Close in your mind! Perfect read for summer evenings in the garden.
Thank you to Jane Casey and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

A decent thriller with an interesting plot good enough to make me want to keep turning the pages. I enjoyed the description of the houses on the close and the characters who lived there. All in all a good read for the summer months.

Fabulously well written. Pacy, punchy and positively packed with a plot that’ll have you tearing through it in a day or two.

Even though this was the tenth book in this series and I hadn’t read the others I did enjoy this one. Now I’ve read it I want to read all the others in this series. A brilliant, brooding book. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

I started reading The Close not knowing that it was the tenth book in the Maeve Kerrigan series, but it did not matter as the quality of the writing drew me in and kept me turning the pages. Events from previous books are hinted at, but did not interrupt the flow of the story. The good news is that I also have another nine books in this excellent series to look forward to.
Investigating the suspicious death of a vulnerable young man, Maeve and DI Josh Derwent go undercover as house and dog sitters in the same street where the victim lived before he disappeared. On the surface, Jellicoe Close seems to be a quiet, peaceful neighbourhood, but soon the cracks begin to appear. A real feeling of menace develops as everyone seems to have something to hide. Maeve and Josh are under a lot of stress as they have to keep up the front of being a couple while trying to make headway with their covert operation.
We mostly get the story from Maeve’s point of view, so can only guess what everyone else is thinking. Every now and again there are short sections from the perspective of an unknown male that ramp up the tension – the voice is really creepy and just about every male character in the book is under suspicion at one point or another.
Obviously it was not ideal to start this late in a series, but I never found it a problem due to Jane Casey’s excellent writing. I really liked Maeve Kerrigan and look forward to starting at the beginning of her story. Thanks to HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

A fantastic read and one that I’d definitely recommend. Having not read the previous booked I was unsure how I would find this being book number 10. However I found it reads ok as a stand alone book and the story kept me interested. The characters are well developed and the plot is engaging.

Jane Casey is a wonderful compelling modern day writer. I love her books and this one especially. I find myself sympathetic and triggered by the characters which makes for greater enjoyment!!

Having not read the previous booked I was unsure how I would find this being book number 10, however I found that it reads quite well as a stand alone book and the story kept me interested enough, I would like to maybe go back and read the earlier ones in the series.

Rather a different type of thriller but still difficult to put down. Set in a quiet street, building tension, a dangerous person at large and sexual chemistry combine to make this thriller a great read.

This is another great book by Jane Casey. She is fast becoming one of the best crime writers. The characters are well developed and the plot is engaging.
A fantastic read and one that I’d definitely recommend.

A tense thriller with wit & a cute dog - what's not to love?! I'm not usually into will-they, won't-they romance, but I really enjoyed the interplay between Maeve & Josh.. The fully formed characters are skillfully described so much that I could see Jellico Close as I was reading. A cracking summer read.

This was my first Casey book and I enjoyed reading it. Usually I don't really care about romance in a mystery thriller type of book but I actually liked it in this one. It definitely had me hooked.

This is the tenth book in the series featuring DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent. Maeve and Josh are working as undercover police offers in a small neighbourhood posing as a couple in a relationship in order to investigate a potential link between the death of a vulnerable young man and a local house where he had stayed. Maeve is find the pretence hard as there certainly is some chemistry between her and Josh. As well as this case she is still carrying out her investigation about the murder of a young doctor who was found dead in his car at the hospital where he had worked. Thee are many twists and turns in both investigations before the truth is revealed. I really enjoyed this book and it certainly would work well as a stand-alone and I look forward to the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

I enjoyed The Close, as I have all Jane Casey books, but perhaps slightly less gripping than previous books in the series. It took a while to warm up, but was well written enough to keep my interest and overall it was a well-paced and engaging read.

Brilliant, atmospheric and tense: this excellent crime novel combined three plots and an ongoing will they won’t they relationship with skill and ease. This series just gets better and better.

I have arrived rather late in this series but I did find this book entertaining and well written. yes it would have helped to have known more about the main characters back stories from the previous novels but the plot was good , topical and interesting. A good modern crime novel tackling some of the issues of today
