The Close - by Jane Casey
This murder mystery started with quite a fast-paced move. Never boring in a chapter in this 400-paged book. The story began with a young doctor body Dr Hassan Dawoud was found in a car with a weird body posture, the curtains opened. DS Maeve Kerrigan was in charge in this murder case. When she was struggling to find the murderer.
Then it moved to another murder case at Jellicoe Close which a fractured young man named Davy Bidwell was discovered, physically abused. In this tight and harmony Jellicoe Close with some secrets. In the past few years, other lodgers were missing too. DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent needed to reveal the mystery in this perfect neighbourhood. Therefore they moved there as undercover. Not colleagues this time, but couple. How romantic!
The intense plots with well-created characters built the suspenseful story. Easy to read, lots of enjoyment. The Close is the #10 series in Maeve Kerrigan and this was my first read in this series, which means..lots to catch up for me!

Another gripping and nicely constructed book in the Maeve Kerrigan series. Interesting plot, enjoyed the characterisation and interpersonal relationships too.

I have read a couple of books in this series, didn’t realise there are now ten of them - I think I need to start from the beginning to get the full experience, because I did feel I was missing some of the back story. However, tHis was another enjoyable read, packed with mysteries and suspense, and a large and varied cast of characters.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A thrilling read, full of the usual thrills and frills. A recommended read.

I read Cruel Acts and that was definitely gripping and worth its 5 stars. By comparison this is far from gripping and better described as worth reading.
The Close is certainly an interesting mix of people but I would offer that to be true of most streets. After all, how well do we really know our neighbours??
An interesting read for a cold, dark night tucked up warm with your favourite drink. That is the best I can do for a recommendation.

Yet another cracker from Jane Casey in her excellent Maeve Kerrigan series that never gets stale and whilst this may be book 10 in the series, I think you could just about get away with it as a standalone but I really would recommend you read the rest of the books if only because they are all excellent!
The Close is yet another gripping read with the right mix of intrigue and action, red herrings and plot twists. Being a fan of Maeve and Josh, I loved that they were working undercover together acting as a couple and it really brought a different dimension and added tension to the story and kept my grubby little eyes reading as fast as they possibly could.
Highly recommended series and I can't wait for the next and many thanks to HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of The Close.

This book is actually the 1st one I have read by this author didnt realise it was book ten. There was a few times before i realised it was a series that I thought I had missed something, however it did not dampen the story. It could be read as a standalone. I really warmed to the two main characters in the book and how well they work together.
Had a laugh a few times with the antics with the dogs too! Think I will go back and start at book one really did enjoy and recommend. Thank you for advanced copy

The Close is another compelling and gripping addition to one of my favourite crime series.
It was great to be back with Kerrington and Derwent, solving another case with them. I especially liked that we get to learn more about the people behind the detective’s as they go undercover together to try and solve their case. I loved watching them relax and grow closer as the sexual tension between them slowly increases. This also causes some absolutely hilarious moments which had me laughing out loud as I read.
The residents of Jellicoe Close were an interesting bunch who I’m very glad I don’t live next too (well to my knowledge anyway). There were some very creepy people and some typical alpha males which I was fascinated to learn more about. All of them seemed to be hiding something which made it hard to whittle down the suspects.
This book actually follows three cases at once which I found very intriguing. As expected the author does a great job of weaving these together and keeping the reader on their toes with lots of red herrings. Just when I thought I’d figured it all out something would happen to prove I was wrong. The introduction of some fabulous new characters like Georgia along with the brilliant character development of Kerrington and Derwent means I’m hopeful there are more books to come in this series.
Huge thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Harper Collins for my copy of this book via Netgalley.

I’ve been a fan of the Maeve Kerrigan series for awhile so was looking forward to this new book. It did not disappoint! Have to say since this is the 10th book it’s better if you’ve read a few of the previous books so that you know the characters more (especially when it comes to the will they/won’t they pairing) but it still works as a stand-alone too. Highly recommend for crime thrillers fans!

Absolutely brilliant read! 2 undercover officers with a common unresolved past pretending to be house sitting to observe suspicious activities in a quiet suburban estate. Inhabited by quirky and peculiar residents, suspicions and tensions are high and when people start turning against one another, finding the real danger becomes more complex than a game of cat and mouse. Really endearing characters and superb story telling: this book is a must read!

Book 10 in this police series. This book was as good as previous one in the series. Following the death of a consultant in a hospital car park. Maeve and Josh go undercover in The Close and all is not as it seems. They are in more danger than they realise. I loved the fact that this book develops the tension building between Maeve and Josh.

I loved this book and I love love love Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent. This plot seen them take on the undercover role of a couple who are dog sitting for a friend in a pretty suburban neighbourhood. They have their eye on certain people, waiting to find out what has been happening to vulnerable men after being taken under the wings of these people. Are they all as innocent as they seem? Alongside this is the inner thoughts of a sick and twisted individual whose behaviour gets worse as the story develops. I had no genuine idea of who he could be as the majority of the men on the close are weird and creepy, capable of anything.
I really enjoyed the relationship between Meave and Josh, they clearly have feelings for each other and even super guarded Maeve has begun to realise this.
I can’t wait for the next in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for the ARC in return for an honest review.

This was a totally absorbing story. There were several threads to follow which kept me focused trying to work out who did what. Some really good characters who were easy to relate to. I loved the conclusion which leaves an enticing opening. Great read!

I love a police procedural murder mystery book and although this book has all those elements, it is more than just another story. The Close is a well written, tightly plotted book - just as the residents of Jellicoe Close are a tight neighbourhood when Josh and Maeve are sent undercover to see what they can find out about one particular resident but they get involved and uncover more than they were expecting. I was particularly intrigued with the relationship between Josh and Maeve and am hoping to encounter them in future novels. A great but unexpected read.

The latest in the Maeve Kerrigan series and definitely one of the best. I hope Jane Casey continues to write more books featuring this fantastic detective .
The plot was full of menace, suspense and twists and turns. Definitely a 5*!

Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent are on the latest undercover case in Jellicoe Close.
Jellicoe Close appears to be well kept houses with neighbours chatting over the fences and children playing together. The dark secrets of Jellicoe Close put both Maeve and Josh in danger and a ruthless criminal that will stop at nothing.

Despite only having read a few of the previous books in the Maeve Kerrigan series, I could still appreciate ‘The Close’ as a stand-alone.
Casey can capture the reader’s attention through her writing, which is filled with tension, drama, and suspense in all her work, and ‘The Close’ does not disappoint. DS Kerrigan and DI Derwent are at the forefront of an undercover case, and it is amazing to see how the characters have developed and grown from their previous appearances in other books. The storyline is full of twists and turns, but there are also some comical moments added to ease the heaviness of the dark crimes being investigated.
This new release has rekindled my love of this series and I will eagerly expect future releases, while also looking to gain more of the previous reads. If you are a fan of crime fiction with addictive and engaging characters and absorbing plots, it’s time to get your hands on ‘The Close.'

Book 10 in the Maeve Kerrigan series...
I'm loving the creepy cover in this next installment.
DS Maeve Kerrigan is back with us alongside her colleague DI Josh Derwent.
Their latest case brings them to Jellicoe Close.
We can all feel the slow, simmering tension between Maeve & Josh so I was delighted to see them in a situation where they might have to address their feelings towards each other.
Maeve is fragile and unsure of herself after her previous relationship which turned abusive.
Maeve can keep tabs on her other case with her colleague Georgia while she lives in the Close undercover. I did enjoy Georgia's infatuation with Josh whilst on her telephone conversations with Maeve, quite funny..
I don't think I enjoyed or liked any one of the residents they needed to get close to in order to see who was preying on the vulnerable.
They seemed rather abnoxious and so annoying.
Quite a sinister read where I felt people were lurking around corners, watching and waiting.
Author Jane Casey writes with passion for her characters..
A great read, so worth your time.
And if you haven't gotten to this series yet, I can't recommend it highly enough..

As a rule I don’t read books in a series out of order. I made an exception for this title when I found it on NetGalley simply because the blurb intrigued me. After finishing the story, I can say that not being familiar with the previous titles was somewhat of a mixed blessing.
Allowing the blurb to lure me into this book was the right decision though. The mystery (or should I say mysteries?) in this book were captivating, intriguing, and very well plotted. The blurb only reveals some of what is going on in this book which means we are dealing with an intrigue and action-packed story. I really can’t say too much about all of that without risking spoilers, but I do want to mention that this book kept me on my toes and managed to put me on the wrong footing as to the identity of the perpetrator(s). I loved the creepy insights into a murderer’s mind and the decent into madness they revealed while keeping their identity under wraps. In fact, the mysteries in this book and the outcomes were faultless and it was a delight to try and puzzle along (even if I got it wrong for the most part).
What didn’t work as well for me was the interaction between Maeve and Derwent. I don’t hold that against the book, though. This is book #10 in an ongoing series and I imagine that what transpires in this book has been set up over the course of the earlier releases. Furthermore, it is not as if you need to have read those earlier books to appreciate the complicated relationship between these two. There are enough references to what has gone before to ensure a new reader isn’t grasping around in the dark. Personally, I could have done with the blurb specifying that this book (series?) is almost as much about their complex interactions as it is about the mysteries they solve, but that is mostly because I’m not a huge fan of romance playing a (big) role in crime fiction. Again, if I had read one or more of the earlier titles, I would have been aware of this fact so it’s not something I hold against the author.
Overall, this was a gripping mystery with fascinating and well portrayed characters. The plotting is tight, the resolutions are clever and (for the most part) surprising, and the writing was faultless. I’m not sure I’ll go back to read the previous titles but I will almost certainly read future titles in this series.

I struggled with this book as I had unfortunately not read any of those previous to it. This was book 10 in the series. I would not recommend it as a standalone as much revolved round the tensions of the relationship between Maeve and Derwent who obviously have previous history. They are sent undercover to Jellicoe Close to solve the mystery surrounding the murder of a hospital doctor . They uncover a place that is not at all what it seems
