There’s a good story that this book almost tells but unfortunately goes off on an odd tangent. It would have made more sense to concentrate on the death of the brother Finn instead of going back to the scene 9 years later. I almost gave up reading in the prologue when on one short winter walk the character sees a squirrel, an owl and a mouse. Goodness what a nature stroll that turned out to be.

Juliet Reid wasn't able to save her murdered brother almost ten years ago. Can she stop an ice-cold killer in their tracks a decade later? A brilliant rollercoaster of a ride… I read this book in one sitting in less than a day and loved every minute of it!

Julia was the one who found her brother Finn's body nine years ago. She was only 15 and it colored her life. Now, she's come home again and this time it's her father who is dead. The official answer is a self inflicted gunshot wound but she's not so sure,. Add in the fact that the man who was convicted of killing her brother has been set free because of jury tampering and you're got a potential pot boiler. This is more of a simmer but it's still a good read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Good atmospherics and characters.

I think the best I can say about this one is that--for me--it was OK. I could not really get into the story and found it difficult to believe. None of the characters stood out for me. Read in December.

Secrets And Lies…
Secrets and lies, familial relationships and tragedy. Returning to her small home town of Parrish, Ohio, Juliet thinks a celebration is in hand, a joyous family gathering despite events ten years earlier. However Juliet is met with the news of her fathers suicide. The last thing that she expects. As she digs deeper, and certain events come to light, her brother’s murder ten years earlier comes into question. Well constructed romantic suspense with credible characters and a well drawn backdrop.

Such a Winter's Day
by Carlene Thompson
The book was just ok for me. Hard to explain what the main characters were hard to like..Far too much killing for no real reason. Just ok to me does not as I saw in reviews if they were honest reviews, then it was just me..

Ten years ago Juliet’s brother was murdered and now her Father appears to have committed suicide. Why now, 10 years later. Her Father was acting strange just before his death. There are multiple murders in this book with plenty of suspects. There is also a romance, altho I wasn’t wild about the romance aspect. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

I've been reading Carlene Thompson's books for quite a few years and at the end of each book I say to myself "That was her best one yet" This book was no different. With several murders both current and stretching back a decade and no fewer than eight possible suspects I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Carlene, can't wait for the next one.

In the depths of winter, I tend to gravitate towards gritty thrillers with plenty of intrigue and blood. So, it’s not surprising that I was drawn to this chilly-looking crime novel.

Ten years ago, Juliet’s brother was murdered and now her father seems to have committed suicide. But she isn’t convinced that this is the case. It appears that her father uncovered some secrets just before his death which may have been the reason for his grisly end. Juliet is desperate to find out the truth as to what happened to her father and stop the killer before they take more lives.

The significance of the title is revealed early on in the book but it didn’t really feature in any major way throughout the story. I was expecting to be hearing remnants of it within the pages but other than it simply being Juliet’s dead brother Fin’s favourite song, it wasn’t really too relevant. Fin’s story is revisited towards the end of the book but it’s certainly not the focus of the narrative, so it seems a strange choice for the book’s title.

Juliet’s father was acting distant and strange in the days before his death, so I did wonder whether Juliet was barking up the wrong tree by crying murder. However, her adamant insistence that he wouldn’t kill himself echoed throughout the book and I eventually began to suspect a character very close to her. He seemed to have something to gain from her parents being dead, so that’s where the intrigue really began.

Delving into Fin’s history and final days unveiled a tragic truth within his life. I didn’t see this part of the story coming and it gave it a darker, sadder basis for everything that takes place within the town. I think an investigation focusing on Fin’s murder would have been a much more impactful, interesting novel than the one I read.

There is a romance element to the novel and it made my flesh crawl. Alec is possibly one of the creepiest, most suspicious, ‘good’ characters I’ve ever read and Juliet’s crush on him made me cringe. I kept waiting for the big dramatic twist that would put an immediate stop to this incredibly icky love story and to my horror, it didn’t arrive!

Such A Winter’s Day is quite slow with a few murders that felt somewhat unnecessary. I didn’t see the final reveal coming and it didn’t really make a whole lot of sense to me. It felt as if, towards the end, Thompson just picked a character at random to be the killer, so it was very unsatisfying. Sadly thoroughly disappointing.
