I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s slightly different as it’s a murder story but the lead protagonist is a Crimes Scene Officer and I liked the detail that was involved with that. However, she ends up working like a detective, so the author might as well have made her a detective but included a character who was a CSI to give us the interesting detail. Just a thought.
I’ve only given four stars for two reasons:
1. The only nurse on the ITU, leaves the unit to go collect results from Pathology - firstly there’s never only one nurse on ITU and secondly, you’d never leave a ward, any ward unattended. The path lab worker would deliver them before that would happen and I imagine it’s all electronically delivered these days too.
2. It became slightly far fetched in the end. I won’t say anymore for fear of spoilers.
However, that having said, I loved the writing and it certainly had me turning the pages.
My thanks go to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for an advanced e.reader copy. The review, however, is entirely my honest opinion.
Great debut thriller.
Breakneck Point had something a little different as we read from the point of view of the killer as well as Ally, the forensic expert leading the way.
Well written with depth and great imagery of the locations. Fast-paced and recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for the opportunity to read and review.
I’m really sorry but this book did absolutely nothing for me and I was so happy when I reached the end. It just seemed quite amateurish and very silly, and there was too much unnecessary repetition and padding. Sorry, but thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC.
What a fantastic debut crime novel! Brilliant and intriguing plot that will have you flipping pages like they're on fire! Captivating characters and a twisted ending seals the deal for a great CSI female heroine, intertwined with a questionable police department and a serial killer that escapes notice. It's a great beginning to what I hope is a wonderfully developed series.

If you want a book to make you feel depressed this is it. CSI Ally is honest, committed to her job and faithfully recording evidence. Her police associates want to solve a murder and not necessarily let evidence get in the way. A court case finds the suspect innocent because Ally refuses to accept that some of the evidence is hers and that is was 'fixed'; she's ostracised as a result and police found guilty. She's dumped with almost non-cases as retribution. Various murders occur and are classed as suicide, natural and so on whereas she sees evidence that could suggest otherwise. She's ignored, accused of 'having it in ' for the detective in charge. Add to this is a difficult relationship with her teenage daughter made worse when abusive ex-husband gains a job at the daughter's school not to mention the adopted mother from hell. Ally is very focussed on work which is part of the problem.. An interesting twist is that we know who the murderer is right from the start and have monologues from him about the murders, his partner, wife, appalling old folk and the rest. He's very good at faking evidence and setting up vulnerable people for the murders and is oh so charming to everyone on the face of it. Ally and the murderer box and cox, and finally come together with an unexpected result. It's a well-written book with lots of interesting and accurate detail of both methods and characters. There are quite a few blanks though to me - what set off the murderer? why (abused childhood no doubt)? I felt for Ally as she so wants to do the right thing but with so much and so many people against her it is depressing. Not sure I could cope with more of this in another book but there is hope. Thanks to NetGalley and HQ for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
A good mystery novel. The characters are well developed and the story in intriguing and suspenseful. This one will keep you guessing.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Excellent story about Ally who is a CSI in Devon she has one daughter who is quite a handful. Ally is not very well liked as she is very honest and does not condone bent coppers.
It starts with the murder of a young girl the Police think they have the murderer but the evidence says different Ally has to convince them that they have the wrong person but no one will believe her. I couldn’t read the pages quick enough and can’t wait for her next book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy.
Excellent debut novel. Told from the POV of a CSI who values truth above everything, even breaking the rules. She is ostracized from the beginning for refusing to be complicit in corruption, which makes subsequent relationships in the workplace extremely difficult. At a murder scene she notices signs ignored or dismissed by police when brought to their attention, but as the bodies increase so does the tension as further signs are missed. Good pace and good characterisation makes this a really good read. I look forward to the next in the series.
I understand the author is a CSI herself which gives it added authenticity.
Thanks to HQ and NetGalley for a much appreciated ARC in return for an honest opinion.
This is a bit different from the usual crime novel I have read but interesting all the same. It was enjoyable to read from the killer’s perspective as the author shows early on who the killer is. A very good plot with a good description of the crime scenes without being too much information was interesting to read. I hope there is more books coming in the series I recommend this book and author.
I thought this is something a little bit different from the usual police procedurals. Its interesting and intriguing and certainly captured my attention.
I hope this is the start of a series and look forward to reading more about Ally Dymond.
This was an enjoyable book and I enjoyed the insight from the killers point of view and the investigators point of view. It was interesting to read the slightly more technical aspects of a CSI’s role and I felt this was done well without being too detailed or technical.
A different and quite brilliant crime novel with a difference!
A very clever plot and engaging characters makes this book a very good read indeed. I hope it is the beginning of a new series
Breakneck Point - T. Orr Munro
I'm a big fan of unconventional crime fiction, so Breakneck Point which features a CSI as the lead character grabbed my interest.
Ally Dymond in a CSI working across North Devon, she's also a single mum to a teenage girl and has recently been ostracised for refusing to corroborate falsified evidence.
It moves at a very good pace, the killer is identified to the reader very early on, no spoilers but it's someone whose job frequently puts them at the scene of the injured victims of crime. There are chapters from from Ally's perspective and from the killer's and it really works. They become locked into a battle of wits with the killer determined to carry on killing and Ally determined to get the police to take her claims seriously.
I really enjoyed the blend of serial killer thriller with strong character driven and psychological elements. The author is a former CSI and the experience and knowledge shows.
A very good fast, fairly dark and involving read. Not a must read, but definitely recommended and I look forwards to reading this author's next book.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ
Thanks to Tina and NetGalley for allowing me to read Breakneck Point before the publication date.
Ally Dymond is a highly experienced Crime Scene Manager with the Major Investigations Team in Devon.
Cited as a witness in a murder trial, Ally is presented with a production which she knows nothing about and clearly says so.
The result is that the accused is found not guilty, the victim’s parents are devastated for the second time, and DI Jon Stride is convicted of corruption.
Ally is re-assigned to lesser incidents and has to face the animosity of colleagues.
In the quiet seaside town of Bidecombe, the body of 19 year old Janie Warren is found. Ally is asked to provide support to a colleague. The investigating officer excludes a production which does not support her theory and arrests a man who was seen with Janie.
Cheryl Black is a vulnerable woman with multiple health issues and a chaotic lifestyle. When her house is burnt to the ground with Cheryl inside, the fire investigator determines that the probable cause of the fire was a dropped cigarette. Ally knows that Cheryl has stopped smoking, but DI Bob Holt refuses to listen to Ally.
When Ally’s daughter, Megan is attacked and is in an induced coma, Ally goes into full investigator mode, risking everything to identify the person responsible for the attacks.
BREAKNECK POINT opens in the midst of a slam dunk murder trial that has an unexpected development with serious, wide ranging ramifications. The situation has a domino effect, allowing mysteries to go unexplored. Apprehension and trepidation permeate every page making them fly by. Heart-racing, harrowing suspense is mind-boggling leading up to a dynamite finish.
WOW!! A debut novel that had me hooked from the very start. I couldn’t put this down once I started and kept reading to the end. An absolutely fantastic read and this author has jumped right up there with my favourites. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. This debut is an incredibly strong start and five stars out of five just isn’t high enough.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
When a young woman is murdered the lead detective is positive the evidence points to one man only. Ally, the civilian CSI officer, is convinced he's got the wrong man and reports her findings to his senior officer. After another suspicious death, she again accuses the same detective of arresting another innocent man. Shunned and ignored by the police Ally is then drawn personally into the search for the truth when her daughter is found battered and close to death.
A really terrific book with relatable characters and an ending that took me by surprise.
Loved it. As a debut novel it had everything, and was very well written. What an excellent read, and such a good plot. It had me from the beginning and was very difficult to put down. It was interesting that it was known by the reader who was the guilty party almost from the start and then the plot develops around it. The characters are very strong, loved Ally the CSI. There was also good development of the characters around her, which I sincerely hope can be expanded in a follow up book. Really appreciate the opportunity to read and review this book, an author to look out for, can’t wait for the next one.
