I loved this graphic novel! Really liked the characters and the artwork, really was fascinated by the characters' facelessness as well. The plot being open ended is a bit frustrating but adds to the aesthetics of the novel!
Thanks to Netgalley and Europe Comics.
What is the one thing you would wish for from an Japan loving Demon?
An unlikely friendship between a Demon and a Witch.
I have read a few graphic novels and this isn't your typical one. You have to concentrate on the story, to come to your own conclusion of what's happened. Which I felt did get abit confusing as it would jump ahead and I wanted to know what happened, rather than try and figure our the whole plot myself.
The colour palette really added to it, with very minimal colour with the characters being the boldest really helped them pop and stand out. I'm not sure about the characters having emotionless faces, you did get use to it but I found it abit eerie.
The whole plot was abit odd but you constantly had this feeling something was watching them from the woods, which I felt built suspense, as you, wanted to find out what it was.
I'm giving it 3* mainly due to the fact it left me asking too many questions, plus I felt like it ended on a cliffhanger ..... Will there be a sequel? Or has it just ended and left to the reader?

Netgalley and the publishers has let me read it for an honest review. The graphics were lovely and I enjoyed the faceless girls. We get that girls are missing from the town but all they do is continuedly repeat that. The main girl is kind of dreadful and I wanted to connect to her in some kind of way but wasn't really given the chance till the very end. I am hoping there is a second volume because even if this volume didn't give much of any info maybe the second one will.
I would like to thank NetGalley for giving me this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Night cry is set in a small town where they have been strange disappearances of girls and a witch summons an anime loving demon. I loved the atmosphere and the art style. One thing to note is that the artist does not include facial expressions so sometimes it can be hard to discern what a character is feeling. It's a very mysterious book and i was honestly confused by it. I did not know what exactly it was setting up or where it was going or even where we are. If you love a good plot, then i wouldn't recommend this but if you enjoy atmosphere and witches and you don't mind a mysterious ending then i recommend this graphic novel.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book!
Im such a big fan of witchy books, and this one was super cute! The art style was IMMACULATE.
I had a little trouble reading the words on my phone but that was more user error than book things.
And I’m not sure if it was just me..? but the plot was confusing at times.
I loved Laura though. And Mattie.
I’d still recommend it to anyone who likes witchy/occult-ish graphic novels!!
3/5 stars.
Although this one was a little confusing, I loved the story and the artwork and it was a nice, cute, short little read that made me smile.
So I don't really know how to describe this graphic novel because I am not really sure what I just read. I mean, Nigh Cry kind of said it best "I don't get this story". The art is beautiful but I wish there was more to the story. Did I finish it in one sitting? Yep! Did it keep my attention the entire time? Yep! Did it keep my attention the whole time because I was trying to figure out what was going on? Yep! I kind of hope they add on to this story.
This is the story of three characters and their relationships to each other, set during the nights of a small-town city full of mysterious disappearances which are being slowly forgotten by the inhabitants. It is written in a literary vein, meaning that the truth behind the mysteries and the strange and sudden ending might be intuitively understood by some readers but will never be explicitly explained. Therein lies the flaw; the mystery is somewhat at odds with the flavor of the characters' relationships (even if intertwined with them), and the ending seems to come out of nowhere and does not resolve much about the character relationships that are the focus of the rest of the book.
Overall, it's a short and mostly enjoyable read, even if it will take someone more literary-minded than I to figure out its unspoken secrets. Recommended for people who enjoy dark and moody character dramas with unexplained mysteries.
The art style of this manga was pretty cool. I really enjoyed the colors and shifts in atmosphere.
But the plot was pretty weird and it didn’t make much sense to me. It was trying to be a horror but it failed. And the characters had little to no personality. Overall, this was a pretty bland read.
This was a quick read with wonderful, atmospheric art, and a layered, mysterious story I really got into. Laura the pink, Japan obsessed demon was such a fun creation. She felt like something that would come out of the Buffyverse or Supernatural. I also appreciated that there was still some mystery at the end and wouldn't mind seeing more from these characters in the future.
Thank you Netgalley for this arc!
Night Cry, by Borja Gonzalez, is a weird one for a number of reasons. I wasn’t sure of what was happening most of the time but I enjoyed every single minute spent reading this graphic novel. The art style is beautiful and the story is interesting, melancolic at times too.
The ending confused me quite a bit, I’m still unsure of what happened, or what was happening in Teresa’s little sleepy town; maybe I have to read a couple more times to truly grasp the little details that might have escaped me.
I really enjoyed this short little graphic novel! The art style was so cute & i found the characters being face-less really interesting. I didn't 100% understand what was going on, but I loved it all the same.
This story lost me pretty quickly. I thought the art was pretty innovative at first, but as the story moved on, I struggled with differentiating them, especially because they seemed to go through hair and wardrobe changes. The story itself started out as interesting, but, similar to the art, it lost me. I had no idea what the end was about and overall could not tell you what happened during the entire story. Interesting premise, but I couldn't get into it.
I received a copy of this graphic novel through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly it was a very confusing book. The characters were faceless (literally drawn without faces) but mostly the art style was okay. It was a quick read, so it wasn’t overly difficult to finish it…But by the end of the story I was so confused and seriously didn’t know what the point of whole story was…Could anyone explain what the hell did I just read? 😆
The art-style was nice, but a bit confusing too. At times it was hard to tell which character was which because they didn't have faces. Also the plot was confusing and I didn't understand what happened in the end
"Because if you refuse to believe there are mysterious things at work in the world, secrets to uncover...you're admitting that this crap is all there is."
They say to write what you know, so Teresa writes about everything that goes on in her town. Or, everything she writes about comes true. Or, perhaps after meeting Laura, a pink demon, everything she has written has come true and has always been true and has never been fictitious in the slightest. These faceless characters have you relying on archetypes, which only increases the mystery. Are these different reiterations of the same character? Characters from her other zines?
Teresa says herself that she doesn't quite like her writing despite publishing it as a zine in her shop. And she writes quite a bit, though she has never sold Night Cry #38. All the other things you see in the town, the eye, the vines, the ghost, the demon, are all her subject matter. But Matilda, the young otaku who enjoys leafing through her occult bookshop, is something of reality. And perhaps that is Teresa's wish, to have fiction and reality finally combined. If she cannot get rid of her town filled with skeptics, perhaps she can instead turn them into believers.
As Teresa comes to discover what she wants to wish from Laura--a wish we never hear--we also explore her town, acknowledge the strange occurrences that seem to happen with increasing frequency. Though closure does not seem to be a theme of this novel, belief is. And to identify with Teresa, Laura, and Matilda, we must believe in the narrative, must not cast aside the oddities and eccentricities as the rest of the town seems to do. After all, a little suspension of disbelief never hurt anyone.
Night Cry is a witchy and melancholic graphic novel following an occultist bookstore owner and an anime-loving demon. Think Good Omens but super short and a bit more gloomy (a good kind of gloomy!!)
For only being roughly 150 pages I thought it was such a cute book! There's even some Sapphic elements to it!! The animation style is fantastic, it fits the vibe of the book so well and it definitely reminded me of the show Adventure Time.
But I do have to say that the story itself felt too ambiguous at times, almost to the point where I found myself wanting more. The ending is very much open to interpretation, which can be really nice it it's own way, but I would have loved something clearer to wrap it all up.
All in all I'd definitely recommend this book if you're looking for a short and comforting read <33
Thank you so much to netgalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book💗
I really wanted to like Night Cry, i think the art is absolutely beautiful and i love the style, the character designs are cute, and the story had potential.
However, the were also a lot of things i didn't like, the dialogue felt very unnatural, people don't talk like that, or at least not any people i've met.
The plot was also very difficult to follow i, was confusing from the start and i didn't know what was going on. Usually when that happens i understand more as i keep reading but here i just got more and more confused.
I also felt that the art style didn't really match the story, i don't exactly know how to explain why i feel that way but there was just something off about it.
Night Cry is a unique little graphic novel with fun characters, an inventive art style, and a lovely color pallet. The story stars a depressed shop owner masquerading as a witch who summons a wish granting otaku demon one night on a whim. These two and an awkward student (and frequent shop visitor) form a strange, but comfortable friendship, while the witch figures out what her wish will be. This whimsical plot line lays atop the background of a dangerous city - complete with creepy woods - where girls are going missing and something is watching from the darkness. The simple, elegant images and colors move the reader seamlessly through the story, creating moments of bubbling joy and sweetness among the building tension. Although the work is relatively short, I felt that each of the three main characters had well developed personalities and interesting interpersonal interactions. I wanted each of them to be happy. My only complaint is that the novel left me wanting to hear even more from these characters and solve the background mystery. The story ended without satisfying my desire to figure out what happened to the missing girls or what the demon will do once the witch’s wish is granted. That said, I’m excited to check out more from this artist!
Not sure I really understood everything, so a second read is likely needed; but I enjoyed it anyway. The art work is beautifully done.
