This manga is so very charming that the lack of plot didn’t bother me as much as it should have. The art is really nice and the protagonist (a tanuki/raccoon dog) is delightfully cute.
This manga doesn’t have a plot; instead it’s a sort of slice-of-life manga about a young woman who takes in a ‘stray’ tanuki— though she’s convinced it’s a dog.
I couldn’t stop smiling as I read this. It’s a funny, cute, and very relaxing manga that will really get your serotonin flowing.
I’m really looking forward to the next volume.
I received the E-ARC of the book from Netgally in exchange for an honest review
Love it when manga reminds me to relax, unwind and just enjoy an easy paced slow down kind of story. Love that there’s not much of a story line but more snippets of someone’s life with a rescue “dog” (which is a Tanuki but that’s the point of the manga)
The art is delightful and very nicely composed without much drama. I like that I can actually slow read and enjoy the images for what they are. I think one of my favourite thing about the manga is that the main character is a woman who lives alone but she’s not lonely or craving a partner or having loads of people around. I love how relax and comfortable she is and though I think she knows she’s got a Tanuki, she accepts the fact that the creature itself says “I’m a dog” and she just loves him regardless.
I also enjoy how the little leaf on top of the dog changes with his mood, it could be a longer leaf or a longer stem or a flower this manga is to enjoy the details and relax.
I wish it was a little longer and that my arc had more colour (Worth mention that as I got it in a digital format I might not have seen the final draft) I would continue with the series.

With You and the Rain, Volume 1 by Ko Nikaido was a neat surprise I really enjoyed. It's about a young woman who comes across a tanuki in a box looking for a home and their life together after she adopts him. It gives you all of the typical pet manga vibes with a couple of fun twists, he's a smart tanuki. ;-) I'm looking forward to reading more, but it's probably not something I'd want to binge back to back. It's more of a slice of life kind of story, but I really liked it.
The book is sooo cute that I read it twice!!! Actually, I adore every animal-themed manga!
This one is beautifully drawn. The storyline is simple, yet funny and sometimes very touching.
I know he's not a dog. You know he's not a dog. The vet definitely knows he's not a dog, but good luck convincing Miss Fuji of that, no matter who you are. What he is is a tanuki, a real Japanese animal that has the sort of folkloric side that coyotes have in some First Nations cultures, and for some reason, one day he decided that he wanted to be someone's pet. And honestly, it's hard to blame the furry little guy, because many of us treat our pets better than we do other humans, so why wouldn't a quasi-mythical animal want in on that?
I say "quasi-mythical" because the tanuki in question is definitely not your average racoon-dog. He can write, for one thing, but he's also got a leaf on his forehead, which in Japanese folklore means that he could transform into other creatures at any time. (Or perhaps the tanuki form is his transformation...?) While he's recognizably an animal, he acts like a mythical beast, and that disconnect, along with the poor vet trying desperately to pretend that everything's fine and Miss Fuji's total obliviousness, make this as silly as it is sweet. Not much happens, but there's a charm here that's easy to get pulled into.
This was an adorable slice-of-life manga that I really enjoyed. I thought the artwork was absolutely beautiful, and the tanuki (or, ahem, the dog) was soooo cute that it made me want to die. Being that this is slice-of-life, there really isn’t much that happens plot-wise, but the small everyday moments here were very heartwarming to me. I really hope this one makes it to physical copies because this is a nice, calm read perfect for relaxing. Looking forward to volume 2!
There wasn't much advancement from page 1 to the end. Super cute manga about a girl adopting what she thinks is a dog. The animal is adorable and can write on his notebook, but nothing happens with the plot.
A very cute series about a woman who adopts a tanuki (...which she mistakes for a dog). She's adorable, the tanuki's adorable, what more can you really ask for? This is a pretty simple series full of slice of life vignettes with lovely art and character design. It makes for a comfortable and quick read.
An absolutely precious manga of a girl and her “dog” who have every day adventures and get closer as they do. I loved these little scenes, it’s a very sweet book.
This was really cute. It reminded me of Lilo and Stitch in a way and I really liked that about it. This was very cute and fun to read. That's really all there is to say about this. It was a cute start to what I hope is a very cute series.
This is a sweet "Slice of Life", "comic sketches" manga. Heartwarming in every page.
Love the relationship between the woman an her "dog" (Tanuki).
'With You and the Rain, Vol. 1' with story and art by Ko Nikaido is a manga about a woman who adapts an unusual pet.
A woman walking in a park finds an usual animal that may be a cat or a dog, but is probably a tanuki. The animal is intelligent and likes to write notes. It seems to have fooled everyone around it into thinking it's a dog.
These are cute vignettes, but there is barely any character development here. The stories are cute and the art is good. It just depends what you are looking for. I wanted to know more about the girl and the unusual 'dog.'
I received a review copy of this manga from Kodansha and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
I love this kind of manga. And not because it is beautifully drawn, that it is, with super expressive and very funny characters, with lots of little details and a pleasure just to look at. No, it is because this story of a young woman who finds a tanuki and adopts it as if it was a dog (you know, because the tanuki told her it was a dog) is hilarious, tells a lot with very little and is so much fun I can't wait to get my hands on volume 2.
The manga is made of short, very short, chapters, that tell different events since our main human character finds the tanuki on a rainy day. All of them are a mixture of sweet and funny, and Ko Nikaido does an amazing job in creating the perfect balance. You read a chapter, laugh a little, look at the cute drawings, lose yourself into the expressive eyes that are telling there is a mystery to learn more about and go to the next chapter. And the next, the next... Till you finish the volume. It is the perfect balance between silliness (a tanuki writing on a notebook and people believing what it just wrote on it, the over-the-top father...) and depth (why is the woman sad, what is her relationship with her family...).
Read it!
With You and the Rain is a very cute story about a girl that finds a tanuki caught in the rain. Each chapter is a comedic slice of life of the two doing mundane everyday activities. I've read quite a lot of manga so I'm familiar with this type of light hearted story, which leads me to believe this story line would work better as a weekly web comic. If there was some overarching goal that the tanuki had or hint as to why it knows how to write, or why it wants to be with a human, then there may be more of a reason for me to continue.
From the cover, you can expect this book to be cute and easy to read. It was an adorable journey! I really loved each chapter that brought a new topic and challenge for these two to tackle. Personally I really adore tanuki and I find it funny that they are often mistaken as dogs because of their personalities and how they walk. This title is a really great manga for all ages. It is something I can easily recommend to children and those looking for appropriate manga for different age groups. It is also a great title for anyone that wants a relaxed, cute and comical read.
A woman adopts what she thinks is a dog but is really a tanuki. It's really funny at times, especially the tanuki's facial expressions. This is a cute, sweet, funny manga that I would recommend to fans of "The Masterful Cat id Depressed Again Today."
The book was made available to me just yesterday and got archived today , could not even download. I am giving 3 starts only to be neutral .
This definitely a manga I would recommend for the younger audiences or someone trying to get into manga to see the style of storytelling. The book is fun, lighthearted but not much to offer in terms of story.
Rating: 2.5 stars
This is an odd little manga. If it were an anime, it would be one of those ones with 3 minute episodes. There's a woman (I don't think she ever really gets a name?) who adopts a "dog" that's actually a tanuki that uses a notepad and marker to write messages. There are a lot of sweet, sometimes funny, little vignettes of her daily life with her rather odd "dog" (whom only her vet seems to realize is actually a raccoon... and that dogs don't usually write signs... but OK). It's a sort of relaxed, chill piece with no larger connecting story between the little slice of life snapshots, and no real driving plot or impetus to keep reading.
3.5/5 stars
Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha for an eARC in exchange for a review.
This lighthearted, slice of life manga focuses on a woman who finds a tanuki but thinks he's a dog. I really liked how light the story felt and short each of the chapters were. I really think that the tanuki's personality shined with his actions and his little pen and notepad. I do think that some of it requires some willing suspension of disbelief because if you think about how easily these people have been tricked by the tanuki, it makes the characters seem a bit dumb.
Side note: it reminded me of the editor in Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun who wanted to add tanukis into every manga that his authors were producing.
