It's an entertaining thriller that requires a lot of suspension of belief and it's a bit predictable at times.
I had fun and kept on turning pages but I would have preferred some more surprises.
The characters are not likeable but realistic and fleshed out. The storytelling is good and the plot, even if it's not perfect, was enjoyable.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for an exopy advances readers copy of The Golden Coupl in exchange for an honest review. I really likes the first three quarters of this book it was eerie and intriguing but the conclusion was a little rushed for my liking. I don't think Tina's murder was fully explained and I don't buy I that the father in law would just back off on the end.
The Golden Couple is a psychological thriller that delivers a complex and twisted tale of murder, infidelity and revenge. Over the top but enjoyable and compelling reading.

When you read a book from Greer Hendricks you have to throw overboard all expectations about a realistic and plausible story. That is the only way you can enjoy their books.
Avery is a counselor after she lost her license for being a therapist because of her unconventional working ethos. Being a counselor gives her much more freedom to work with clients. She created a method of 10 sessions to fix the problems of the people who seek her help. When Marissa approaches her she is intrigued. Marissa cheated on her husband and she wants to tell him about it. Avery is intrigued by the dynamics of the couple but it turns out that there are more secrets to unravel.
The story is told alternating between Avery’s and Marissa’s POV. Usually there are some twists and turns in the books from Greer Hendricks. This is not so much the case here. You can see the twist at the end coming from afar. There are also some irritating side plots like the one with big pharma and Avery which I think are absolutely unnecessary for the story. The story is not as complex and twisted as usual but it is an easy and quick read and I liked Avery and her unorthodox methods. She also adopts a sweet dog from the shelter so that counts for something. The writing is fluid and if you are looking for a light and easy read this might enjoy this.
A therapist takes on a new commission to resolve the problems of a married couple who appear to have everything that anyone could ask for. . Such is the nature of her job, that slowly and meticulously she researches everything she can discover related to the aspects of their relationship that they are either unable or unwilling to reveal. Methodical in her approach, using every available avenue, she explores not only the present, nor their recent past but the far reaching implications of the onset of their relationship. Undeterred by a current personal problem threatening her safety nor ongoing issues related to the recent bereavement of her husband she determinedly unpicks the layers of a tangled and dangerous relationship from which no one is safe. A complicated triangle that evolves into an obsessive and dangerous personality disorder leading to a worthy if unexpected conclusion . Many thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC.
What a superb read. I was hooked from the start wanting to know why Marissa opened up immediately to Avery. The whole story is full of twists and turns with unexpected results. These two make fantastic authors who know how to keep the reader entranced. Even the last two pages were totally surprising.
Characters are so real from the bitchy women to the conniving men. At the end I just wanted to give Marissa a great big hug.
Look forward to another great read from this amazing duo.
I cannot get enough of this writing duo. I have read all of their books and each one just keeps getting better.
The books tell the story of an unhappily married couple, seeking the help of a therapist. It is perfecetly paced. Howevever, when I started reading this book, I did have concerns about how it was all going to come together.
The book was incredibly clever and I don’t think that any other ending would have done it justice.
I particularly enjoyed the way the book was told from the different viewpoints and the way in which each chapter ended with a cliffhanger. I read the book in one sitting, continuously thinking "just one more chapter"
These two authors compliment each other perfectly, and they are a duo, I look forward to reading.
It feels such a long wait until the next one now!
Why am I only discovering these two brilliant authors now??!!
What an absolutely brilliant read! It kept me guessing till nearly the end and there are so many clever misdirects that it keeps the reader confused and distracted from what is really going on. If there was a butler in this book I would even have suspected him of being the evil finger in the pie.
I found the pace fast and the characters well developed.
I will definitely not skip any future books by these two authors!
Thank you to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
If you want a book that will keep you guessing, then this is the book for you. A couple who’s marriage is in trouble and a therapist that will fix you in 10 sessions !!
Marissa and Matthew seem like the perfect couple. But they are seeking the help of controversial therapist, Avery. She says she can fix her clients in 10 sessions but is she right ?
Marissa has slept with someone who isn’t her husband and in order to keep her family together, she thinks Avery is her answer. But soon we discover there is a lot more going on in the lives of Marissa and Matthew as well as Avery.
Can Marissa save her marriage ? Will Matthew forgive her ? Can Avery help the golden couple ?
This is a great psychological thriller with some great characters. It kept me hooked from the very first page to the very last. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves psychological thrillers that keep you guessing.
Thank you to Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
"Wealthy suburbanites Marissa and Matthew Bishop seem to have it all—until Marissa is unfaithful. Enter Avery Chambers.
Avery is a therapist who lost her professional license but it doesn’t stop her from counselling those in crisis, as long as they adhere to her unorthodox methods. And the Bishops are desperate.
When they glide through Avery’s door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. Because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden (some buried very deep!), and it’s no longer simply a marriage that’s in danger."
I’d read good things about this book so even though I’ve not read any Hendricks & Pekkanen before I thought I’d give it a go. I’m glad I did, I was hooked from the beginning!
This was a really pacey character driven novel, even though the final reveal was a slow burn. (Loved the plot twist re Skip v Matthew.)
It’s being referred to as a psychological thriller but for me it’s more of a domestic drama.
Marissa was likable but seemed to be spinning a tangled web around her. Avery fast became a favourite, I liked her independence, her attitude, her tenacity and general outlook. Polly is annoying! And it’s difficult to tell whether she’s just super naïve or more sinister. I won’t speak of Matthew or Skip to avoid spoilers.
I really enjoyed this. Full of suspense and characters I could invest in. I’d love it if an Avery Chambers series was on it’s way.
Thank you to @NetGalley and @PanMacMillan for the ARC.
Avery Chambers has lost her license to practice but can still treat people as a therapist. She is sought out by the Bishops - Marissa Bishop has cheated on her husband, Matthew and has conned him into attending, claiming it's for their son, Bennett who is eight, but she wants to confess to her adultery. With a vast number of twists, the finale is a good one which will be a shocker for many readers even if you work it all out. In a narrative from the perspectives of Marissa and Avery, The Golden Couple is a terrifically good domestic thriller choice for anyone who enjoys a strong, wholly absorbing character-driven novel.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Pan Macmillan via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
This story focuses on the marriage of Marissa and Matthew. Marissa is hiding a secret and brings Matthew to therapy with a non therapist called Avery. Avery has a ten step programme to get their marriage back on track, but Avery also has secrets of her own.
There were many strands to this book, weaving a much larger story than just the break down of a marriage. Each character had secrets, secret that slowly became exposed. This was a great read, and makes you realise that appearances really can be deceptive. Marissa and Matthew have always been “The Golden Couple”, and this couldn’t be further from the truth. The ending was brilliant, and gave a final twist into a story that was already full of surprises. Highly recommended.
Thanks to Random Things Tours for my gorgeous hardback and place on the blog tour!
This was my first book by Hendricks and Pekkanen and is certainly not my last!
I loved this book, and loved the audiobook experience too! I felt completely immersed in the story and characters, and the audio was absolutely stellar quality! It was a book that I would continue to listen to at any opportunity!
What a fantastic premise. A 'golden couple'b who on the surface have everything, but whose marriage is in trouble. So in comes Avery, a former therapist who lost her license. This would normally mean she is restricted, but by not being bound by rules and codes of conduct, means she is able to use unorthodox methods in her sessions. Honestly, this was utterly captivating! She was a FANTASTIC character and the authors did a wonderful job in conveying her complexities.
The ending was great too, and whilst I did have a few suspicions of my own, this was a brilliant book and one I would highly recommend.
A slow burning book, that gradually builds up to an intense, fast paced, nail biting thriller. Told in dual person format, this is another well written, fantastic, dark piece of fiction from both Pekannen and Hendricks.
Full of twists, turns, and red herrings to keep you guessing, and turning the pages, with one final killer twist at the end.
A character driven read, with our female protagonists being both realistic and relatable.
I found this book to be compelling, gripping, and a highly enjoyable read.
My nerves are now shot to pieces!
Many thanks to Random Things Tours for my tour spot.
Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I don't typically fall for a pitch that involves a therapist as I often find the storylines require too much suspension of disbelief, but I found this absolutely gripping. I thought the use of the two perspectives, as we've come to expect from this pair, expertly done and try as I might to figure things out... I was still surprised at the twist. Brava, ladies!
This was a brilliantly told story. It was the first I'd read from this writing duo, but I will definitely look for their other books after reading this.
The story centres around Avery, a disbarred therapist who lost her license due to her unorthodox methods and a couple, Marissa and Matthew who begin seeing her to try and resolve their marital issues. Lured there under false pretenses, Matthew soon discovers Marissa has had an affair. The plot is then mainly played out and developed through the couple's therapy sessions. On paper this sounds fairly mundane, but oh my god, it definitely isn't! Their visit to Avery sparks the beginning of a huge web of secrets, deceit, and murder.
I found the characters all so well portrayed, from Marissa's seemingly helpful, but irritating assistant, Polly, Skip the concerned friend from the couple's past, to Romeo the dog!
I also really enjoyed the many sub plots throughout the book, some of which were red herrings, but certainly added to the overall sense of unease and tension throughout, as it's almost impossible to know who you can trust. Such is the skill of the writers.
I did begin to suspect the culprit towards the end, but this in no way spoiled my overall enjoyment of the story. Highly recommended.
Thanks to the authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, publishers Pan Macmillan and Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was #gifted this book in exchange for an honest review from @netgalley.
& it left me guessing until the very end! Like jeez just when I thought I had figured it out.. BAM - PLOT TWIST! Don't ya just love books like this!!!
I was drawn in by the characters and the way the author developed their personalities and traits throughout the book. I enjoyed finding out the secrets they held and I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to see if more would come out!!
The story is told from the perspective of two characters but it's easy to follow and actually it's rather fast paced as I just couldn't flip the pages fast enough.
If you enjoy a psychological thriller.. then this is perfect for you!
Avery Chambers can fix anything. Well, not legally though. She'd lost her licence to practice as a therapist due to her somewhat unorthodox and unethical methods, but at least they worked. If she can't fix you in ten sessions, she won't even take you on as a client. She can fix any problem that comes her way - from the most depressed people, to the most aggressive abusers, to the most broken couples.
Marissa and Mathew are perfect, the golden couple - they're both stunningly beautiful, with a loving child, a successful life and clearly loving marriage. Until a secret comes out the shadow … Marissa cheated on him. But she is desperate not to lose everything so they end up in the office of Avery Chambers, but it soon becomes clear that cheating wasn't the only secret being hidden in that room, and for the three of them, these secrets might threaten to destroy all of them.
Perfection is deceiving...
A sharp, witty and beguiling psychological drama full of secrets, lies and misdirection. Starting off with the feeling of a contemporary domestic fiction, it slowly turns darker and twistier, getting blurrier and murkier so we don't know who is good or bad anymore. Avery was amazing - she was corrupt, she was harsh, she was unethical - but she also thought she was doing the right thing. She was rude, snarky and sarcastic and I loved her instantly. Marissa and Mathew were definitely an intriguing pair but next to Avery they definitely didn't shine too bright and I found their personalities a little muted.
This moved slowly, and was definitely a bit of a longer read - but the thrills and reveals started off subtle, and occasionally exploded into full blown chaos, including some very tangled side-stories that weave their way in.
Everything I hope for in a novel .. and a little bit more!
Marissa and Martin Bishop have, to outsiders, a perfect life with a beautiful home and a much-loved son. Only Marissa knows that she cheated but she can’t keep it from Martin and seeks help from therapist Avery Chambers whose process is not of the usual variety. Avery picks and chooses her clients carefully; since losing her license she can employ more of a maverick approach. Accepting the Bishops as her clients gives Marissa hope that their marriage will soon be back on track but even while ‘baring all’, there are secrets being kept . . .
I first came across these authors when I read their first novel, The Wife Between Us, and was completely bowled over by it so was just a tad excited to have their new one on my list. I’m not a duplicitous person, valuing integrity and honesty but my first thought – and I don’t think I’ll be alone in this – was why did she tell her husband? However, she did and that brings the opportunity of introducing the therapist, Avery Chambers into the equation and we have to wait some time to find out exactly what all ten steps of her ‘fix’ are. Very cleverly written, this book has several very likeable characters and a few I wasn’t sure about! Secrets are hidden all the way through and when they come out, it’s all rather explosive. Absolutely gripping, this is such a thrilling read and one I’m very happy to recommend. The Golden Couple easily earns a full house of sparkling stars.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is – as always – my honest, original and unbiased review.
Marissa and her husband Matthew have everything that a couple desire or do they?
Even their son knows something isn't right and when they mention splitting up the eight year old son soon states that him will not live with his father.
Avery Chambers is without a doubt a fantastic character and also her dog Romeo.
When she tries to help the family things aren't as black and white as it seems.
An enjoyable read.
