An addictive page turner…. It evolves around an unlicensed therapist who now goes under the title of been a consultant and the golden couple themselves who she is adamant that she will fix them more or less but their is a lot of skeletons falling out of their closet and why does she want to fix them so badly, you will have to read it to find out more but a great book..
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are back with a new domestic thriller about an unlicensed therapist named Avery who tries to save the marriage of Matthew and Marissa after Marissa reveals she has cheated with another man.
This a slow burn story that I almost gave up on half way through and I am glad I didn't because the final third of the book really set it alight and it all came together to a satisfying ending.
If you enjoyed this writing duo's previous books then you will probably enjoy this one as well. It didn't quite work as well for me but I will look forward to future works from them.
3.5 stars.
I literally could not put this book down. Luckily I read it on a day when I didn't have to. It sucked me in, held me captive throughout, spitting me out at the end, exhausted but wholly satisfied.
We start off with Avery. A therapist in name only having lost her license for, well lets just call them, shenanigans! She has a bit of a different way of working. A ten step method which I will leave you to discover in your own time. Her latest client is Marissa who rocks up for her session along with husband Matthew. He thinks they are there to talk about their young son's struggles, but is shocked when Marissa declares that she has had an affair, well, slept with a guy from the gym as a one night stand. But, although shocked and devastated, Matthew eventually agrees to carry on with the sessions...
But, as we will soon discover, the shock that Marissa delivered to him in the session isn't the biggest. In fact, you will probably start to reel at all the secrets, lies and duplicitous behaviour that this book delivers. One after another... until the whole and very shocking truth is finally laid bare.
Oh my days. If there was ever a book to go in completely blind to, this one rates up there. It's a bit of a slow burn initially but, like a chess match, the pieces have to be placed. The foundations laid. The story built up. Until it's time to smash it all down to get to the crux.
I blooming loved Avery. Especially her gung ho, don't care, attitude. If ever I need a therapist I'd love her to... well... maybe not... her methods are a bit insensitive and brutal. But she gets results. Not necessarily the ones she wants or expects... Still, I'd prefer her on my side than against...
And the story the authors weave... So very very well plotted. You really do need to pay close attention all the way through as everything is there for you. I just didn't realise the half of it as I was reading... So very clever and so very well executed. Kudos indeed.
The characters were what really made this book pop for me. I'd love to wax lyrical about each and every one but spoilers prevent me from doing so. There aren't many but all of them elicited some kind of emotional reaction from me - good and bad - along the way. And not always the same emotion all the way through sometimes either.
Anyway. A cracking book, probably one of my favourites of the year as it just kept on giving and completely pulled the wool over my eyes pretty much all the way through. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Ok so I love these two however this one for me personally didn’t reach their op usual awesome heights .
I was left flat and was more like a drama in a way and I wasn’t that intrigued or gripped
They are usually on the button but this was a bit disappointing. And I’m gutted to write that
Still three stars as it’s not less
Thankyou for advanced copy to publishers and netgalley
This a great read.
Marissa persuades her husband to see a therapist so she can be honest about sleeping with another man.
Avery is surprised by this revelation and is on hand to help the couple recover from this.
Things don’t go as smoothly as Marissa hopes but Avery is on hand to support her.
This summary really doesn’t so the story justice as there’s lots more going on but I don’t want to spoil it for you.
If you like an intriguing thriller then this book is definitely for you. I highly recommend it.
Thanks to Pan MacMillan and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
To the outside world Marissa and Matthew Bishop appear to have it all; successful careers, a loving marriage and a beautiful home that they share with their young son, Bennett, so when they turn up to a meeting with Avery Chambers, with Marissa declaring she has cheated on her husband, you begin to wonder where it all went wrong. Avery Chambers was a therapist until someone reported her for her unorthodox methods of treatment, so she now trades as a consultant, and a very successful one at that, she claims if she can't fix a client in her ten session programme, then she won't take them on, and she hasn't failed yet, but has she bitten off more than she can chew with the 'golden couple' and is she putting herself in the firing line?
The Golden Couple is a fast paced thriller which follows the lives of these three complex characters, each of them having secrets which could turn their world upside down, should they be revealed. The plot is well crafted with many unreliable characters, all interwoven in some way with the three main ones and, as the story continues, it all starts to become clearer what their connections are. There are lots of twists and turns in this book, with so many red herrings that will have the reader chasing their own tail, trying to decipher who the bad guy (or woman) is here. The story is a dual narration by Marissa and Avery in alternate chapters which flow seamlessly throughout. This is the fourth book I've read by these two authors and I couldn't put it down. If you like a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, intrigued at the turn of every page, then this one is for you.
I'd like to thank Pan Macmillan and Netgalley for inviting me to read this book, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
The Golden Couple is another great story by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. It was fast paced, with plenty of twists, turns and red herrings which kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the very end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for my ARC.
Another original, absorbing, engaging tale from this duo.
Avery has lost her license to practice but can still treat people as a therapist. Her methods are different and she digs deeper into the lives of her clients in her own time in order to deal with their problems.
She is approached by Marissa Bishop who has deceived her husband, Matthew, into attending by intimating to him it is about their son but, in fact, wants to admit to adultery and find a solution to their marital problems.
The characters are well developed and as the sessions progress so does the story of how each of them came to be in their respective situations.
Plenty of twists and turns; well written and absorbing.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Greer Hendricks/Sarah Pekkanen/Pan Macmillan for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is all about a therapist, Avery, a rather ‘left of centre’ one who has been ‘disbarred’ but continues to practice under another title and uses her controversial 10 step guide to therapy
Along come The Booths, the ‘golden couple’ who are seeking her help for a problem they think her therapy can help solve……but will it? or will it unearth more than the Booth’s bargained for
It’s a new take on a time old tale of therapists in psychological thrillers and it does work although meanders off on tangents throughout and various sub stories ( including ones from Avery ) and as the book progressed the 10 steps, so important and listed as we met each one at first, become more of a passing thing than vital to the story
However it is full of surrpises and shifts in story and is a viable look into relationship secrets and trust and ultimately the well read theme of ‘who do you really, really know’
7/10
4 Stars
Marissa and Matthew Bishop seems to have it all. On the public eye, they seem to be a perfect family with a perfect house and perfect lives. As per their family, friends and co-workers, they were nicknamed to be the Golden Couple. Yet, they seek out a controversial therapist Avery Chambers where Marissa confesses to her infidelity.
A story of secrets, intrigues, lies, betrayal, harassment, and a murder opens up to us. The Golden Couple is a page-turner thriller which kept me on my toes and kept me guessing until the very last page.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Parthian Books for an electronic ARC in return for an honest review.
I loved the authors' previous books, so I was excited to delve into this one. Although the plot held plenty of promise I did find the book lacked pace in parts which distracted me a bit. Some worthy twists and red herrings were in place with some surprising reveals, but I thought the buildup of suspense was lacking.
Power duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen deliver yet another riveting thriller! This is my fourth book by them so I juggled both high hopes and anxiety about being let down. My fears were unfounded, however, as I really enjoyed this!
Since these are auto-read authors for me, I went in blind and was absorbed right from the start. The story was intriguing and had me putting on my detective hat. So much so that I was mirroring the protagonist at times!
My favourite thing about this book would be the well-written and developed characters. I loved how there was quite a sizeable cast, which kept me guessing. Everyone seemed shady and I wasn't sure who to trust — exactly what I enjoy in a thriller. I also loved the main players, especially the different sides of Avery we got to see (Romeo!!!)
Compared to the authors' previous works where the characters were either typical of a domestic thriller (The Wife Between Us), cold and detached (An Anonymous Girl), or simply unlikable (You Are Not Alone), The Golden Couple has the best characters hands down.
The mystery was fun and compelling. Nothing wow, but I was certainly thrown off the scent for a bit. I also enjoyed trying to figure out how all the many different puzzle pieces fit together. The ending was satisfying and I loved following Avery's journey.
All in all, a great read and you won't be disappointed if you have enjoyed the authors' previous three collaborative books.
An intriguing and fast paced thriller about an unorthodox counsellor who whilst dealing with the fallout from a previous case and her own recent widowhood gets plunged into the intricacies of a seemingly perfect couples life. This novel is not quite up to the standard of the writing duos previous books but otherwise an enjoyable read.
Marissa and Mathew Bishop, “the golden couple” in front of everyone, has secrets and betrayal underneath their veneer.
When Marissa’s infidelity brings them face to face with Avery Chambers’, D.C’s infamous therapist, Marissa hopes for just a single chance that can repair their marriage. Avery, known for her notorious procedures, has her own battles to fight after losing her husband and getting embroiled in corporate sabotage.
There are a string of interesting characters revolving around these 3. There are links, broken and violent which ties them all together. Avery must decide whether the Bishop’s are worth her time or is there something even more sinister at play.
💎The title is perfect! How often we see such golden couples, especially in this age of social media, but dare we find out how life is in real?
💎Avery Chambers is one of the most intriguing characters I've read about.
💎The web of lies and deceit at every turn of the page makes it really difficult to understand who is the main culprit. I couldn't even realize the “crime” as such in the beginning, which creates some jaw-dropping twists.
💎The author duo brings out the dangers which are in stark contrast to the luxuries and memorable moments spread throughout the story.
Loved this book! Fantastic story, keeps you on your toes, very fast paced with some red herrings thrown in. Ending was a surprise and a good one!
When guilt begins to overwhelm a cheating wife, she seeks out a therapist who prides herself on her unorthodox approach to redemption and confesses her sins to her unsuspecting husband.
For the most part, this was definitely a slow burn mystery but not so much that I ever found myself becoming bored. There were plenty of subplots throughout, all of which were neatly tied off in the final pages. I thought the characters were excellent and definitely had my favourites, primarily Avery and I thoroughly enjoyed her adorable relationship with Romeo.
This is the first book I've read by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and I can't wait for more, my eyes will be peeled!
Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review 📖
I truly enjoy this duo's writing style.
Their writing sucks me in and it's so easy to read. They're really good at leaving breadcrumbs to keep you coming back for more. (Let's forget they ever wrote the wife between us)
However, the plot was not up to their usual standard. I'm used to their interesting and twisted storylines and this is your generic domestic mystery.
It also dragged on a little long. By the 80% mark, I was wondering if I would ever get the payoff. When I did, it was lacklustre. If you're a reader who thrives on figuring out the plot twist, then I reckon you will figure this one out in no time.
It was my first book by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, but I've heard a lot about their previous releases and definitely will give them a try.
This book is quite intriguing and twisty. I enjoyed the mystery element - there is something odd with the Bishops couple, the Golden Couple, as their friends and colleagues name them, and Avery Chambers, the family councelor and psychologist will find out what is going on.
Definitely 4 stars from me!
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ebook in exchange for honest review.
The duo nail it again. I have enjoyed all the Greer Pekkanen books and this one didn’t let me down. It has all the trade marks of the previous books with well described characters that you get involved with from page one. The plot is one you have read on the back of many book covers, golden couple have it all but the secrets haunt them but this book turns from predictable to rollercoaster ride at the turn of a page. I would highly recommend it.
I've read all of Greer and Sarah's thriller collabs and you just can't go wrong. You're guaranteed a good time with intense characters and an intriguing storyline.
I'm particularly interested in counselling/therapy so this instantly grabbed my attention - our main character Avery is a therapist who has been struck off for her hugely unconventional techniques, She likes to get really involved and personal with her clients by digging into their business, secretly following them around and occasionally setting up situations to test their reactions.
I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it - I just wish the couple we're following (Matthew and Marissa) were a bit more interesting. There were also lots of parallel storylines, many of which I didn't really see the point of, and don't feel they added to the story.
Overall though, another cracker from the duo and I look forward to their next book which I will definitely pick up!
