What a lovely story. Alexandra who we first met in Katie's previous novel decides to stop of in Paris before making her way to Switzerland when events happens and she suddenly finds herself in a job as a nanny in Provence. She immediately enjoys her new life gets on well with everyone but is very attracted to Antoine the children's father who owns the chateau where they live but with an ex wife back on the scene there are lots of desitions to be made about the children's future .Its a heartwarming story with lovely characters you immediately feel comfortable with and makes it a book you want to keep reading. I really enjoyed it and really recommend it
Alex was orphaned at a very early age and has been brought up, at a distance, by family living in Switzerland. Although the provided a place for her to live and nannies, companions and boarding schools none of them actually took her in and showed her any warmth.
After a period living in London with friends, a situation the relatives disapprove of, they want Alex to hold to finishing school in Switzerland.
Alex breaks her journey in Paris where she befriends Donna and, after a few white lies, secures a job as a nanny for a Count.
She thinks she will be working in Paris so is shocked to find that Antoine's rather dilapidated chateau is in Provence and that he has three children and a rather complicated family life.
A lovely, warm romance with lots of complications along the way, typical of Katie Fforde.
What a wonderfully heart warming book.
From the very first page I was transported to another time and place. Alexandra’s story is lovely and visiting 1963 again was wonderful. I loved seeing her grow and care for the children and try so hard not to fall for her older sexy boss. There was more than just one romance story going on. I loved Jack and Penelope reuniting and falling love again and even David f ding love, yet having to still stay hidden due to social convention. Seeing him step up and help Alexandra again and be her family was lovely. I loved his informal teaching and I loved the 3 children. Some lovely friendships were forged and I enjoyed seeing the children blossom under Alexandra’s care.
This book was everything I didn’t even I now I needed to read. I couldn’t stop reading.
You really cannot go wrong with a book by Katie Fforde and this is no exception. Set in the 1960’s and featuring a sunny French villa and a dysfunctional family, headed. by the handsome Compte.
Beautiful descriptions of the place, the atmosphere of the French countryside and food made me feel as if I were there and the characters were both charming and nasty, just what is needed in such a book.
Heartfelt romance and one I would highly recommend. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
After being a long-time reader of Katie Fforde’s books, I was excited to read A wedding in Provence, but even more happy to learn that just like her previous book a wedding in the country, we were once again stepping back in time, as I thought Katie’s writing was sublime in the last book!
We meet Alexandra, an orphan, under the care of her more distant relations and due to inherit a substantial fortune. On route to finishing school in Switzerland, Alexandra manages to secure a job as a nanny, quite by accident on a chance meeting in Paris. We are invited into a beautiful French Chateau in Provence, where she attends to her charges, finds her feet and new love with it.
The setting is obviously impressive, from being whisked from the trendy streets of Paris to the country chic Provence it was beautiful.
The characters were all fantastic even the ones we grew to love to hate! I loved the messages of families being created by not just blood, but links and love created through our lives.
It was an absolute treat to read, I really hope that Katie continues to revisit the past through her books because her writing absolutely shines. I truly felt like we had rewound in history and it was just a lovely escape on a dreary January day.
An enjoyable read. I loved Alexandra. She first appeared in another of Fforde's books, A Wedding in the Country, so it was nice to catch up with her and some of her friends. You don't need to have read that book though, to enjoy this one. I loved the setting, and just general life in the Chateau. The Count, his children, and the dog, Milou, are all great characters. The romance gently progresses, and I feel the ending was just right. With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank for the opportunity to review this free ARC.
I found this book a really easy read where the storyline carried you along. The characters were likeable and Lexi had a fair few battles to overcome along the way. It definitely felt like she was a Mary Poppins character of a Nanny. I do wish there had been a bit more build up of tension with the romance.
The setting for this book was lovely and made you want to holiday in France and enjoy the countryside and the food. The story went where you thought it would but there were some unexpected twists and turns on the way - from long lost love to new love where you didn't' quite expect it.
A lovely book and one to curl up with.
What a wonderful read!
Alexandra decides to stay in France working as a nanny to Antoine’s three children. She has never done that type of work before and finds she absolutely loves it. Great relationships are formed between Alexandra and the children who come to see her as a ‘mum’. Alexandra also has feelings for Antoine but feels it will never be able to go further.
Katie Fforde’s books are always a real treasure but this one I think may be my favourite so far. The writing is so lovely with well drawn characters who you really do care about. This book I feel has a huge emphasis on relationships which kept me turning the pages. A real treat.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC. It was a pleasure.
Katie Force's stories are light, entertaining and escapist. Her latest novel is st in 1960s France and follows on from A wedding in the country with Alexandra or Lexi taking centre stage. Lexi finds herself en route to finishing school in Switzerland, but a stop-off in Paris sees her life take a left turn as she gets a job as a nanny. Battling with challenging children, well meaning relatives an absent father and an array of animals sees Lexi find her niche.
Katie Fforde's plots are formulaic and we know how they are going to end but a it is an enjoyable journey getting there.
A good summer read!
Katie Fforde has come up with an easy to read and entertaining story. It is set in 1960s Provence and the main character, Alexandra, is en route to finishing school in Switzerland (at the request of her wealthy, distant relations) but through a series of encounters and events, she ends up as a nanny to three children in a beautiful chateau in Provence. Could they, and the children’s handsome and enigmatic father, provide the home and family she’s always looked for? Or will her relations get their way and she’ll end up becoming a proper lady in Switzerland?
While I haven’t read many of Fforde’s books, I enjoyed them but was a bit disappointed with this one. I felt that this one misses out on justifications and detail that would’ve made it make more sense and therefore be more enjoyable. This isn’t much of a spoiler as it happens early on but Alexandra falls for Antoine, the father of the children, ridiculously quickly and without much justification. Also, there is an event which happens towards the end which Alexandra misses and from the way her character is portrayed, it made no sense for her to do so, despite the relevant plot development..
But the supporting characters are good fun and, as I said, it was very easy to read. And the descriptions of Provence were particularly welcome during the cold and wintry days in England!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
I've read a few of Fforde's modern-day romances and found them a bit samey and quaint to be honest, but this particular book was absolutely enchanting. It was right up my street, appealing to my love of exactly this kind of story. Gentle and genteel, set in a luxurious past, entirely romantic, and so engaging. I want more like this!
Discovering that the Alexandra in this story, was Lexie from a Wedding in the Country, made my day. I really enjoyed that book and was sad when it ended. We catch up with Alexandra in Paris, filling a couple of days before heading to Switzerland to attend a finishing school on her relatives’ insistence.
Still in the heady days of 1963, Alexandra forges a friendship with recently married Donna, a rapid sequence of events leads to Alexandra changing her plans and heading to Provence. She is hired as a temporary Nanny to the children of the Comte de Belleville. Meeting him only briefly, she feels a rush of attraction which catches her by surprise.
Arriving at the chateau on the edge of Saint-Jean-du-Roc, Alexandra is shocked to discover that she is to act as both Nanny and Housekeeper to three very different children. She sets about getting them onside despite interference from both their grandmother and their estranged mother.
This is a fabulous story, which views the challenges, faced by sixties women, from a different perspective. With a few references to Mary Poppins, and support from her friends back home, it soon becomes clear that Lexie is far more than just a Nanny.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, in particular, I found it wonderful to revisit Lexie’s friendship with David. One of my favourite aspects of the last book, was their wonderful relationship. My favourite characters would probably be the children. Each had remarkably differing personalities which presented individual challenges for Lexie. A special mention must go to Milou, the dog, and the kittens, this crazy cat lady was enchanted by them all.
Once again, Katie Fforde manages to create a story of strong women, each character was perfectly developed and a joy to imagine. Alexandra’s or Lexie’s story arc is wonderful, and I enjoyed following her adventures. An escape to Provence was just what I needed.
I haven’t read a Katie Fforde novel for quite a few years, but you always know what to expect. A really well written, light novel that allows you time to escape for a while. The novel was a lovely idea and well written. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.
A Wedding in Provence was a book I wanted to be swept away to a beautiful setting and a story that would hold my attention.
Alexandra was in Paris on her way to Switzerland to go to finishing school but when she met an American woman and ended up getting a job offer that the threads of the story started falling apart for me. There seems to be no connection as to why things were happening. I did enjoy the children and location where she ended up working.
The biggest issue I had was she did not meet the father of the children until about a third of the way into the story.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House UK for the ARC. This is my personal review.
I so wanted to continue reading this, but life gets in the way. Katie writing of the chateau and surrounding area is wonderful, you feel like you are there; even getting wet and muddy. I now want to go to Paris and do the things that Alexandra did, and go to the markets that she went to, but I know that I won’t have the confidence that Alexandra has. Although the ending is obvious, you are still kept on the edge of your seat wondering if it will ever happen. I could rave about all aspects of the book, but it would give away too many plots and you will want to read it for yourself.
Having been orphaned at an early age, Alexandre, has had to rely mainly on just herself. When she finds herself as a Governess to three children, not much younger than herself the story becomes interesting. A simple story focusing on family security, beautifully written by Katie Fforde.
Such a good story. A long winding tale that somehow is only a few months long but you get the real detail of the casts lives. Alexandra is great, just rolls up her sleeves and copes with it all and yet we also see her vulnerability and what she longs for. The children are real and engaging and what book isn’t complete without batty relatives on all sides.
A lovely, feel-good story. I loved the setting and the vivid descriptions of the chateau, the surrounding area, and was sorry when the book ended.
I love a Katie Fforde novel. They're like a special treat to light up your day.....and this one is just as brilliant as all of the others! Alexandra lands herself a temporary job as a nanny in France when she should be on her way to a finishing school in Switzerland. She finds herself in a chateau in Provence with 2 teenagers and 1 young child, and they are not all pleased by the idea of a nanny!
I loved this story as we learn how Lexie wins the children over and works hard to improve their lives. And then there is her v charming boss.......
A brilliant feel-good story with fab characters and a beautiful setting. Go on treat yourself!!
