This was a lovely book. I’ve only read a few Katie Flynn books and have always enjoyed them. This one was no exception. The pages turned easily and I found myself at the end of the book very quickly. Highly recommend. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Cadi and Poppy want to be involved with the war effort of WW2. They move from a small welsh town to Liverpool. . The story tells of their lives and how love enters Cadi's life and makes her rethink her plans. Well written and enthralling.
Not my usual genre, but I really enjoyed this book. Cadi and Poppy, escape the humdrum life in a Welsh mining town with its pattern of marriage and babies all that's ahead for them. They want to see more of life as war begins and they head for Liverpool to sign up for the WAAF. At the age of 16 they're sent packing and have a very eventful couple of days looking for work. Life takes different turns for the girls and they grow up and cherish their independence. Their kindness shines through as they put threats to themselves aside to rescue Lizzie from her evil father. A human account of the first few years of WW2. #netgalley #therosequeen
Once I got into this book I couldn’t put it down, exciting. When I got to Izzy’s story about leaving her father.I had to put the book down so that I could get to sleep. Quickly picked it up again the next day to find out what happened..
We start with Cadi being the Rose Queen in the Rhos. Cadi and her friend Poppy are both fed up with their domineering fathers and decide to go to away to join the forces under the pretext of visiting Flo who is Cadi’s Aunt. In steps Eric and the bombing put paid to those plans.
I love that there are a lot of good and ineteresting new takes on WW2 and women's roles - this is good but not one of the best.
Cadi, a young girl, wants to do her bit in WW2-torn Britain and decides to persuade her parents to let her travel to her Aunt with her brest friend and support the war effort in Liverpool. The story is kind of slowly burning, sometimes even a bit on the dull side. A little less could have been more.
Cadi's character is growing up fast to decide which of the 2 boys she wants: her newly found love or the boy her parents wanted for her. However, her character lacks the necessary depth, she feels sometimes just lifeless.
You can't go wrong with any novel by Katie Flynn, her books are always a very good read and this one is no different. A wartime story and is of great interest. 5 stars and I really recommend this.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this e ARC
A heartwarming wartime romance. The frightening aspects of war are interwoven throughout but not overly dwelt on. Once again, a good array of characters.
Cadi is a very interesting story and I loved her and this story that kept me hooked.
Excellent character development, a vivid historical background, good storytelling.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I just love Katie Flynn books and yet again she doesn’t let you down. Such a lovely book that is well written and just a lovely story to read again and again.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK Cornerstone Penguin for the read 🙂
Katie Flynn does it again and never disappoints.
From the very first page you are gripped and right to the end.
Although set during the Second World War it is a story of a young women finding herself in society and going against her parents plans.
It is alive story as well and to me in times the writing was very reminiscent of Catherine Cookson
I loved it and can’t recommend it enough
Another wonderful book from the name of Katie Flynn a book with a lovely story and characters that go so well together.Excellent 5*
Novels set in the 1940’s give me great enjoyment and this one was no exception! Life during these times was tough especially when there were troubles at home, so friends providing support - both emotionally and physically made a huge difference. Cadi and her friend Poppy were eager to move away from their village to have new, more exciting lives with new experiences. Unfortunately they were very young and found city life was harder than they had thought. When they met Izzy my heart was in my mouth hoping that things would be okay for all. A really well written and atmospheric read from Katie.
This is an easy read and despite being set in the war years it is not too depressing or traumatic. Cadi is portrayed as a strong determined character who leaves her Welsh village to find a more exciting life. Her strength and determination carry her through a number of scrapes and difficult situations much to the disapproval of her family who already had her life mapped out for her.
I absolutely loved this book and It kept me waiting to see who would end up with who.
I just hope ther is a follow up
Another fantastic book from Katie Flynn. Following 2 welsh girls Cadi and Poppy and their move to Liverpool in order to “do their bit” for WW2 This is a different WW2 novel as it follows those on the ground in Liverpool left behind. Great characters and a wonderful storyline. Thanks Katie your publish and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
It’s not often I read books set in this time but I have read books by Katie before and this didn’t disappoint. Another well written book. Well done.
Thank you for sharing thus book with me, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It begins before the Second World War in Wales as 2 young girls become bored by the life mapped out for them in their community and long to travel further with the approaching storm clouds of war they head off to Liverpool to sign on for the WRAF despite being under age. As they are unsuccessful, the story takes unexpected turns through the war it is a lovely heart warming story.
I recommend this book to all.

Another Triumph for Katie Flynn
Set just before the War, in a little village in Wales, two friends are part of the yearly celebrations with Cadi being The Rose Queen. Cadi has her heart on escaping her village and making something of her life, and not settling down and marrying Aled, the farmers son, which is her dad's desire.
So at 17, just as the war is kicking off, Cadi and Poppy make the decision to head to Liverpool to sign up for the forces, even though they are underage, and it would be going against what Cadi's dad wants for her.
On reaching Liverpool, they soon realise that they are too young to join the services, so rather than admit defeat and go home, they scour Liverpool looking for a job.
The story follows what happens to the girls as they decide to stay in Liverpool, helping a few people along the way and maybe falling in love, whilst all Hitler's Bombs rain down on Liverpool.
I love Katie's books and this one is no different, I hope she writes a follow up book, to let us know what happens next in the story
Two young girls are desperate to leave their mundane life in a small Welsh village and head to Liverpool where they hope to be able to join one of the forces at the start of World War Two. Neither of them are old enough but have a fierce determination which as it turns out is not enough as both applications are rejected. They don't want to have to return home but there seems little alternative. This is just the start of a whirlwind of a story that proves to be very entertaining and one of the authors best to date.
Wartime drama with interesting characters and a good storyline. Two young girls from the country looking for adventure in Liverpool, find more than they bargained fot.
