This is the first book in a new and wonderful series! Jada and her Granny are the main characters and their relationship is so heartwarming. Granny is a vibrant and colourful character, and one that readers will immediately warm to. Her vibrancy comes from the bright colours she loves as well as her love for Jada!

Books like this are perfect for those just stepping into chapter books for the first time. Plenty of lovely illustrations fill the pages between the text and the characters are relatable and memorable.

I recommend this highly for emerging readers and for anyone who wants to meet the colourful Granny Jinks!

This story is the first in a new series all about family, friendship and following your dreams.

My daughter and I were immediately drawn to this book by the gorgeous shiny cover.
My daughter is now a confident reader but she still loves chapter books with illustrations and there are lots of lovely ones throughout this book. They capture the lovely relationship between Jada and Granny Jinks as well as the magical adventure they embark on together.

At the centre of the story is eight year old Jada and her Granny. It is so lovely to share a book that really emphasise this lovely bond.

Jada's Granny isn't perhaps your typical Granny though. She is a quirky adventurous character that dresses in loud colourful clothing, paints her furniture in rainbow colours and loves to make daily life as fun and magical as possible for Jada.

Granny Jinks has a secret dream of becoming a magician. The Magic Society auditions are announced at the local community centre. Unfortunately Jada's dad hates magic and signs Jada up for Maths classes instead and Granny Jinks up for crochet.
Can Jada help her Granny achieve her dream? Do Granny and Jada have what it takes to be the best double act around?

This story is inspired by the true story of Jenny Mayers - the first Black woman to be accepted into the Magic Circle. What a brilliant premise for a story!

My daughter read this book very quickly. She loved the magical fun storyline and the two main characters (not forgetting Luna the cat!) She was also keen to try the three magic tricks at the end of the book.

A fantastic new series about family and friendship that is perfect for readers aged 6+ We'll definitely be looking out for the second instalment in May!

This was a brilliant quick whimsical read that featured amazing characters, brilliant writing and a simple but fun plot. It followed Jada as she convinced her marvellous granny to join a secret magic society. This was a very enjoyable read that I would recommend. I will definitely read the next installment!

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the e-arc!

Jada loves spending time with her not-so-ordinary Granny Jinks and when she discovers a box of magic tricks in granny’s flat she learns of a secret dream to become a magician. Jada’s dad hates magic and when he enrols Jada for extra Maths lessons and suggests Granny join crochet club it seems that their after school fun has come to an abrupt end. That is until Jada hears of auditions for the Dalton Green Magic Society and sets out to conjure up a plan to help Granny become the society’s latest member…

The Marvellous Granny Jinks and me is the first in a new series of delightful first chapter books that are perfect for newly independent readers. Filled with family-fun, achieving dreams, making friends, finding your voice and conjuring up courage and bravery, the story of a young black girl and her energetic and loveable granny is heart-warming and magical in every sense.

We all need a grandparent like Granny Jinks, she is absolutely awesome! Despite her age and her son’s concerns that she should be slowing down and pursuing things more suited to grandparents she still has plenty of magic and sparkle left in her. And as Jada and her new best friend Tilda endeavour to help Granny Jinks achieve her magical dreams there is plenty of fun to be had and some very unexpected results.

Featuring cracking illustrations throughout and with instructions for having a go at some of Granny Jinks’ secret magic tricks, lovers of magic and those that share a special relationship with a grandparent will thoroughly enjoy this read. Granny Jinks and Jada will return with more in book number two, Animal Magic.

With huge thanks to Simon & Schuster for the copy I received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Recommended for 6+.

Jada’s granny is no ordinary granny. For starters, Granny Jinks is equally daunted and bored by ‘typical’ granny hobbies such as crochet. She would, however, make a great magician. Will Jada be able to fulfil her top-secret plan of helping her grandmother to become the latest member of the Dalton Green Magic Society?

This charming book is perfect for young readers. I love the close relationship between Jada and her grandmother. The book also has strong themes of friendship and of not conforming to the norm.

I am already looking forward to the next instalments in this new series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster UK Children’s for the digital reading copy.

This is a fun story which I very much enjoyed reading as an adult, and it is a book that I would choose to read to children, or encourage them to read for themselves. The characters are well described and the pictures are great. It begins the story of Granny Jinks, and it is clear at the end of the story that there will be more. I see there is another book in the series, so that will be good to find out what happens next. I really liked the instructions at the end about how to do the magic tricks mentioned in the story.
