So much has alread been said about this extraordinary book that I don't feel I can add much more. It blew my mind from start to finish. Gillian has been a favourite author of mine for the last few years since I read Anything I Do Say and she just gets better with every book. A triumph!
This was everything you need for a thriller and crime story. It is not as black and white as you first think and like most typical thrillers, is full of twists. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
This is the perfect thriller, full of unexpected twists. I love how complex the characters are, how at the heart of this story are very relatable fears. The main character questions if she’s a good mother, if she worked too much, if she didn’t love enough. And as she untangles the mystery, you really feel like you’re walking alongside her. I love the speculative twist. It’s so cleverly done! A 5 * read for sure.
Well this was some ride! Was actually a bit breathless from all the twists and reveals.
I had been seeing this book everywhere and some trusted friends had recommended it loudly so I was delighted to be able to access an early copy thanks to Net Galley.
I was a bit concerned that I might get a bit lost with the time travel aspect of the book - the main character travels back through time sometime by a day and sometime by much more - but it was so well written that this wasn’t a problem. I did have some questions about the physics of it to begin with but these were answered through the characters own research as she tried to understand what was happening and I was pulled into the flow of the story.
Jen the main character is very true to life and it’s easy to empathise with her. As she travels back through time to try and prevent her son from committing a terrible crime, she has the chance to look at decisions she’s made. It is perhaps no surprise that her biggest regrets don’t relate to her work as a lawyer but centre around her family - time she didn’t spend with them , things she didn’t say. I thought the mother’s guilt that plagues so many of us was really well portrayed in this book.
The other characters too were very strong, especially her geeky son Todd who I really sympathised with.
I was just totally immersed in this story. A brilliantly plotted, brilliantly structured original story.
I’ll definitely be looking out for the author's other books.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Michael Joseph for the chance to read an advance copy

Your funny, innocent son commits a terrible crime: murdering a complete stranger. You don't know who he is. You don't know why. You only know your teenage boy is in custody and is future is lost. That night you fall asleep in despair. Until you wake....
Jen is a lawyer. Her husband Kelly is a self-employed painter and decorator. They have an eighteen year old son Todd. It's a Saturday night in October, the clocks go back and it will soon be Halloween. As usual, Jen has to wait up for Todd to come home, to know he's safe. But she sees Todd being accosted by an older man. She witnesses Todd stab the man several times. When she eventually gets to bed and falls asleep, when she wakes up, it's the day before the stabbing.
This is a unique and cleverly crafted story. The story starts on day zero , then each new day is a minus one day. This is a time-travel novel that works it's way back a day every time Jen goes to sleep. The characters are believable in this well written book.
I would like to thank #NetaGalley #PenguinMichaelJosephUK and the author #GillianMcAllister for my ARC of #WrongTimeWrongPlace in exchange for an honest review.
I was really involved in this book with its interesting timeline and multi layered characters, but was underwhelmed by the ending. Still well worth reading as its very intriguing.
Well done to Gillian McAllister on yet another fabulous page turner for her fan.
I do enjoy a time travel book, and this is very cleverly written, with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Jen is living her life backwards, her tomorrow’s have become her yesterday’s, she needs to unravel the truths of 20 years ago and to change the event where her son violently stabs a man and is arrested.
Great characters and the story is pulled together very cleverly at the end. A unique fast paced thriller.
Thanks to Net Galley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
Another fantastic book, with such twists. This author has done it again!
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
I really enjoy reading Gillian McAllister’s books, and since I was introduced to her in my early NetGalley days she’s become an instant request author for me. Having been a lawyer in her early career, she usually writes straight crime fiction, and the court-room elements really shine through as she has real-world experience in these situations. The books are usually on really interesting topics and introduce a ‘what would you do’ moral dilemma which are great conversation starters.
Wrong Place Wrong Time is a little bit different from McAllister’s usual style. It is still a crime drama, for sure but the narrative technique is so fresh and really works well to create a unique and interesting read. I don’t want to give too much away but our main character Jen witnesses a murder which impacts her family and then is thrust into a Groundhog Day like reality as she keeps waking up further and further into the past to work out the context for the crime and prevent it from happening again. It’s an ambitious plot which must have taken a lot of time to work through and it is plotted perfectly.
The chapters are mainly from Jen’s perspective as we delve into the details of her life. Each day that she wakes up has a good mix of information about her life so that we empathise and get to know her as a person and then hints and small reveals about the crime itself. There are also a few chapters about Ryan as he starts his career in the police force - at first it is a little hard to see how these storylines fit together but the end reveal is very well done. Using the two different narrators also means as a reader we learn additional information to Jen and can start to piece things together in front of the main plot. There was only one part of the plot I had guessed before it was revealed but there were lots of twists to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.
As I got to the last 90% of the book I was a little confused about how the time-travel elements would be explained and wrap themselves up. Although there are not many answers given, I think that the ending was really well done and the conclusion was the only way I can really see the story wrapping itself up in a way that still made sense.
Overall Wrong Place Wrong Time is an interesting twist on Gillian McAllister’s writing style but is beautifully plotted and perfectly paced to make a fantastic read that I struggled to put down. Thank you to NetGalley & Penguin Michael Joseph for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When Jen witnesses her son Troy - only 18, and a cheerful and winningly nerdy kid - stab a man to death, she feels like nothing makes sense anymore. But then, after falling asleep, she wakes up and it’s the previous day. Troy’s crime hasn’t occurred yet.
Wrong Place Wrong Time comes garlanded with praise, and I’ve seen multiple people refer to it as the best and most ingenious thriller they’ve ever read. And perhaps that was part of the problem for me: my expectations were too high. Because honestly? I didn’t quite get what the fuss was about. The central idea from which the book hangs - of Jen going back in time until she can isolate the moment at which she’s able to change Troy’s actions and prevent the murder - is clever, and there were some nice twists. But equally, I felt frustrated by several plot holes and elements that weren’t fully explained. At the heart of the book are relationships - between Jen and her husband, between him and their son, between Jen and her father - and these all had a ring of authenticity to them. But as a thriller it fell rather flat for me. However, given the many glowing reviews it’s clearly just a matter of personal taste.

A book defying conventions . A story line that takes you on a time travelling journey to try to change the outcome of a devastating event in Jen’s life. I life lived in a web of lies is gradually unearthed . Well crafted characters draw you deftly in to this very different read.
Thanks to Penguin, NetGalley and Gillian McAllister for the ARC of Wrong Place Wrong Time.
I really enjoyed Gillian's previous title That Night, so was really looking forward to reading her latest book. The synopsis sounded really unique and drew me in immediately - I read a lot of thrillers, so it is rare to find a storyline that hasn't been done before.
Jen's world is turned upside down when she sees her son Todd murder a man, stabbing him to death with a knife at the end of her drive before she can intervene. When she wakes the next morning expecting her son to be in custody, she realises that quite inconceivably, she has woken up on the same day again - the day of the murder, except it hasn't happened yet.
Unlike Groundhog Day however, each morning Jen starts moving back in time, learning more about the sequence of events leading up to the murder, leaving her questioning everything she has ever known about her family, their secrets and lies.
Don't be put off by the time travel element, it's not as sci fi vibes as it may sound. Instead it's a drip feed, fact build up that helps you gradually learn the backstory and keeps you on your toes. You do have to concentrate, so whilst it's not an easy read, It really started to come together in the second half and I loved learning about the truth of Todd and what really happened that night. I loved the ending too. Sliding Doors for sure.
A really unique and gripping read from Gillian.
The concept of this book is so unique and proper genre bending that I didn't know how to take it reading the first chapter but Gillian McAllister's writing style is so perfect that I knew something good is coming
I got sucked in and it only took me two days to finish it. It is difficult for me to review it without giving anything away and I honestly want you to go all in when reading WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME. You need to open your eyes and mind and savour the entire story, think of the little things we brush off in life. There can be significant clues about the big picture that is our life, they can change things in one direction or another. If only we paid attention
This book will play with your mind and expectations. It is brave and thrilling and mind twisting. It will make you think just how far you would go to save your child? How far would you go to change your life?
Wrong Place Wrong Time is inventive and I kept thinking about the vibes it gives me. It's a bit of Russian Doll but also reminds me of MEMENTO (a movie that absolutely fascinated me years back and I still think of it)
It deserves to be a number one best seller. One of my favourite books so far
Wrong Place Wrong Time is a brilliant story .Completely different to anything I have ever read before .Absolutely extraordinary and an ingenious thriller with a time traveller situation .Such an interesting read a real page turner ,compelling ,exciting, lots of twists and turns ,secrets lies and finally the truth . Wow ! Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC .
MY HEAD HURTS! If you like books that make you think hard and use parts of your brain normally left for solving complex riddles, then you need to download Wrong Place Wrong Time the minute it is published on 12 May 2022.
I have just finished this book and feel like my head has been on a fast spin dry because WOW this is one very clever, very original headf*ck.
As a huge fan of Gillian’s previous books, I knew that I was in for a clever, thought-provoking and genius ride, but I really need to congratulate her on what I can only imagine to be a very complex and complicated writing experience because as a reader I was utterly gripped.
Wrong Place Wrong Time is Gillian’s latest standalone crime thriller, but this one has a real stand-out difference to the others. This one features time-travel! As I’m not a huge fan of time travel books and tend to steer away from fantasy/sci-fi, I would never have picked this up if it had been written by anyone else, but because all of Gillian’s books have that clever moral dilemma that I find fascinating I knew I had to read it.
Can you imagine waiting up for your teenage son to come home from a night out, watching him from your window and see him murder a man in cold blood and taken away by the police? That is what happens to Jen, devoted mother, hard-working divorce lawyer and loving wife of Kelly.
The following morning Jen wakes up to find herself a day earlier and starts to spot signs that the “universe” is giving her the chance to stop the murder and save her son. Over the course of the book Jen travels back weeks, months, years and even decades through her life trying to piece together the clues that lead to her son’s crime.
I’m confused just writing this review and my head is literally still spinning. Clever, addictive, so well plotted, moving in parts and shocking in others. I totally recommend it.
Usually I can't stick the plot device repeating days in the last ect but this was very well done and the best I've so far read in this genre. It had a purpose and point and didn't get boring or repetitive
I always love Gillian McAllister books, but I was rather slow to pick up this one when reading the synopsis as I could not see how a crime thriller novel with a time travelling element could work… I should not have worried or doubted the skills of an author as talented Gillian McAllister! Believe me, it works 100%. My only regret? That I didn’t read it sooner. Do not read any more reviews as it is inevitable you will come across one which contains a spoiler, just accept your instincts and read this book as soon as possible! Do not delay!
Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was sceptical when I read the trail for this book but was I mistaken , totally original and very clever I loved it , maybe my favourite Gillian Mcallister novel so far . Yet another 5 star read
Wow! This is the ultimate page turner! I’ve read all of Gillian McMcAllister’s books and this is her best yet.
The premise is great and very well executed. The main character, Jen, lives in Crosby, Merseyside with her husband, Kelly, and their eighteen year old son, Todd. It’s just after midnight on 30th October 2022 and Jen is waiting up for Todd to get home from his evening out. He’d due home by 1am but this is the night that the clocks go back so Jen sees her phone clock go from 1.59am back to 1am as Todd appears up the road cleverly making the most of the extra hour. To her horror she then sees Todd murder someone and their life is sent into turmoil as would be expected. Except that the next day when Jen wakes up she finds herself back on the day before the murder. Every day when she wakes up she finds she has gone back in time, sometimes by a big jump.
After a while she realises that the days she is returning to are significant in relation to the murder she’s witnessed and Jen tries to find a way to stop that murder happening as well as get back to her real timeline.
This backwards plot is so well done and all tied up beautifully at the end. Somehow, despite the time-travel, it stays grounded and clear to the reader and isn’t in the realms of complete fantasy. Apart from the clever plot it also raises a lot of thoughts as to how our actions can have far reaching consequences into the future. It’s a great book and an easy five stars from me.
With thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is great! The tension over a mother's anxiety about preventing her child doing something that will spoil his life forever is unbearable and I'm sure any who had or love a child will be gripped about the heart. Can't praise it enough!
