I like a time travel story and Wrong Time Wrong Place is a time travel story – with a difference – that I loved! This book is pretty good up until the halfway point. THEN IT GETS EVEN BETTER!

I mean – what a concept, right? Your son commits a crime and the next day you wake up and it’s the day before. You have the chance to stop what’s happened or, at the very least, find out WHY it’s happened. This isn’t Groundhog Day where the main protagonist Jen lives the same day over and over. She travels back a day at a time trying to unravel what’s happened and what the key is to change the future. The further back Jen goes the more she uncovers about her family’s secrets – but how far back does she have to go to prevent her son taking part in the crime?

To say much more would involve massive spoilers about how the whole story connects through time and it’s unfair to do that. You need to read this fresh with the merest hint about the story – which is told backwards and in such a fresh, unique way. Each time I thought I’d worked something out, the narrative would wrong-foot me.

As Jen travels back she’s able to focus more on certain things second time round. Little quirks and things that just don’t add up which she’d previously paid little attention to.

There’s also events she’d like to change but is totally aware of the butterfly effect and the ripples in time that could alter the future, for better or worse.

The genius of this story practically (quantum) leaps off the page. Every detail, no matter how miniscule, all eventually click into place as Jen tries to put right what’s gone wrong.

It’s an absolutely amazing time travel/crime thriller cross-over which is astounding in its plot intricacies and so well written. It’s only mid-March and this potentially my book of the year – I only wish I could travel back in time to read it again for the very first time.

Thank you Net Galley and Penguin Michael Joseph for this ARC.

I absolutely love Gillian McAllisters book and this one is simply no exception.

It is the story of every parents nightmares, you have a happy, funny, innocent son, who suddenly commits the worst crime and killed a complete stranger. You have been up all night worrying about where he is, what is he doing, when will be home, everything is completely out of character, and you just don't know what to do. Your son has lost his future and you don't know what to do. How can you prove his innocence. Cue groundhog Day every morning you wake up and it is yesterday, then the each day after that, it's the day before, and the day before and the day before. You have the opportunity to try and uncover what exactly went wrong.

This is the physiological thriller of the year! Completely suspenseful, utterly gripping, really well written and completely nerve wrecking. Another amazing book.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Penguin Michael Joseph UK and Gillian McAllister for my ARC of Wrong Place, Wrong Time in return for my honest review.

Having read and enjoyed all of Gillian McAllister’s previous novels I was delighted to receive my copy. This is a story of a mother, Jen, and her attempt to stop a murder which is committed by her son, Todd. She watches him commit the murder but then wakes up and finds she has gone back one day in time so sets out to change the course of events which lead up to this.

The intricacies and workings of going back in time are huge and I can only commend the author on the clarity which is shown throughout the novel. I found I got confused at times but this was a superb read.

Highly recommended.

What a magnificent tour de force of a read I was mesmerised most of the time whilst reading as just how this story was going to play out and I adored the ending so much !
I cannot stress enough just how remarkable this read is and how in particular it must have taken Gillian so much time in figuring it all out because hell I have never read anything quite like it. Writing my review for a read as good as this is never going to do it justice but I will try.
There is not one thing I didn’t like in the story, not one thing I would change either I loved the characters all of them I really can’t praise everything about it enough. This is a book I will read again in the future and I rarely do that but there is so much about the story I want to revisit . Damn Gillian McAllister you are such a superb writer and this book is by far one of the best books I have ever read so many, many thanks to you it deserves far more stars than I can give and everybody should be reading it !
Please if you love a thriller that is out of this world then read this one it’s astonishing, amazing and absolutely brilliant and not to be missed.
My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph UK for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down. Once I got my head around the time travel aspect, it was gripping and twisty with really great characters. A very well written book that I highly recommend as an excellent read!!

A quick and easy read that I found myself picking up after a long day to unwind. The characters are beautifully written and I came to love them within the first few pages and was rooting for them all the way to the end. At times I wanted to stop reading because I just wanted the experience to go on for longer.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really looked forward to reading this as I have enjoyed the author’s previous work and having a similar life story to the main character, but I struggled mainly because of the time loop dimension, I found it too frustrating unfortunately, just my personal preference

Jen, a lawyer and mother of Todd, has problems. She is caught in a time loop, believing she has already lived through events that have not yet happened. It is not helped by having a husband, Kelly, who is not really Kelly and has a complicated background she is only discovering as she lives through the future. Complicated? Yes. This is potentially a good story if it was told in a straightforward manner. As it is, the time loop business makes it hard to follow and not easy to believe. It would work better as a straightforward family story.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time is an ambitious thriller that combines crime elements with time travel for a truly unforgettable story. When Jen’s teenage son Todd murders a stranger in front of their house, her whole life is turned upside down. Todd is arrested and taken to the police station. Jen is devastated and falls into a troubled sleep but when she wakes up the next morning, it’s the day before. Each morning, Jen wakes up a day earlier than the last, still searching for answers. What would drive her funny, studious son to do something like this? Jen has no choice but to find out.

The premise of this book intrigued me and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to follow the story with all of the changes in time. However, I needn’t have worried. The story is told in a confident, skilful way and is expertly plotted, with some huge twists that I didn’t see coming. As always with this author, the characters feel like real people, with small details bringing them to life.

I enjoyed the time travel elements of this book. Some scenes had a nostalgic feel, with the mention of long-closed shops like Woolworths and how things have changed in England throughout the years. The setting weaves into the plot and it all works together well.

I read a lot of thrillers and this one stood out from the rest. It held my attention all the way through and surprised me with twist after twist. I feel that this is Gillian McAllister’s best book yet and I really enjoyed it.

I was delighted to be invited to read this, as I've enjoyed several of Gillian McAllister's previous books.

I was not disappointed. I have to say that this is one of the best crime novels I've ever read (and I've read A LOT of them)!

A highly original and compelling plot, combined with great characterisation, twists and turns, and a time element (always a plus for me!) kept me up very late into the small hours to finish this book.

I will probably read this again at some point (a rare compliment from me!), and cannot wait for Gillian McAllister's next novel!

My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.

An amazing novel, I struggled to put it down until I had finished it. Jen is caught in a time loop, which involves her going backwards in
time, in order to solve a crime that her son carried out, a stabbing. Her husband is Kelly and her son is called Todd. The plot twists and turns so much, and I cannot tell you the details for fear of spoiling the novel. However, this is my favourite novel of 2022 so far, and I highly recommend the book.

I had heard so much about this book that I had to get my hands on an advance copy and - wow. So clever. I’ve never read anything like it and I’m in awe of Gillian McAllister’s brilliant mind and the originality of the plot. Superb.

Wow! This is a fantastic piece of writing. I feel like Gillian outdoes herself with every book she writes! In my opinion, Gillian was genius being able to write this particular book given the main character is a time traveller.

This is a very clever and twisty book and I was totally blindsided on more than one occasion. It really is unlike anything I have read before and I absolutely loved it, was so different!

Jen the main character foresees her son commit a crime and then has to try and work out who and why - so she can stop it happening in the future.

This really got me thinking about something that I had previously thought impossible, it was a very well written and thought out plot where we go through Jens life lived in reverse and see's if she spots things second time round that she may have missed before

I will be recommending this book to others and looking out for more from this author in the future

A very clever high concept novel that kept me gripped right through. It took no effort to suspend disbelief re the backwards timeline and the twists and turns brought surprises up all the time. Great characterisation as well.

One of the best I've read this year.

This is one of those novels which would have fallen apart in lesser hands. Even in Gillian McAllister's hands I was still worried but I am happy to say that worry was unnecessary.

Books like this can often take a difficult and unusual idea and it gets away from the author, it goes from an unusual premise to full out ridiculous but McAllister handles it so well. There were a few times when I thought I had caught her out with inconsistencies however they were explained further down the line.

This was a very daring novel and I can't praise the author enough.

Rating: 4.3/5

Gillian McAllister is no stranger to the bestseller lists and I have no doubt that "Wrong Place, Wrong Time" is destined to be at least as successful as her previous offerings. Whereas her preceding novels have all essentially revolved around moral dilemmas, this latest book has a somewhat different slant to it and ventures into the realms of time loops.

When Jen's 18 year old son, Todd, inexplicably murders a random stranger, her world is turned upside down. But this is as nothing compared with the events that await her. On waking the next morning, Jen finds that she is actually reliving the day before! Each morning thereafter, she loops further and further back in time, searching for the answers that could save her son's future.

I have read some other early reviews that have described this as 'totally original' and 'unique', but - much as I really enjoyed and admired it - I would have to take some issue with those descriptions. Time-bending plots are nothing new in fiction. The ground has been covered many times in both literary forms and on-screen dramatisations. In the "Acknowledgements" section Gillian McAllister explains that she was influenced by having recently watched the television series "Russian Doll". And, for me, "Wrong Place, Wrong Time" evoked memories of other programmes and books at various points too: BBC's "Rellik" by the Williams brothers is one that sprang to mind as did "Life on Mars" / "Ashes to Ashes", "Quantum Leap" and Stuart Turton's 2018 novel, "The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle". I am sure there are countless others as well, but, ultimately, none of that really matters. Regardless of where the inspirations and influences may have come from, the important thing is that Gillian McAllister has drawn on them to create a captivating story in its own right.

While I would not describe this as a slow-burner as such, it is the kind of novel that engages you and draws you ever deeper into its realms. "Wrong Place, Wrong Time" is a novel that has a mystery drama at its core, but infused with aspects of science fiction, psychology, suspense thriller and emotional family drama. The characters are well-drawn and the plotting is every bit as meticulous as it needs to be to make the chosen structure work effectively. The result is a compelling read that should appeal to most readers of well-written fiction, regardless of their usual preferred genre.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for supplying an ARC in return for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book! I am a big fan of Gillian McAllister. I particularly liked How to Disappear, but I think this new one is just as good. The story starts with Jen's 18 year old son committing a murder outside their house. After spending some horrific hours at the police station, Jen wakes up the next morning to discover that it is yesterday and the murder hasn't yet happened. She continues to travel back in time and is desperately looking for clues in the hope that she can change what happens in the future. If you think that sounds crazy, just go with it! This is a brilliant story, fast paced and full of twists. It will keep you guessing to the end. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
