Definitely my favourite from this author so far.
Really clever and almost impossible to put down this is a story told in reverse, kind of like a superhero origins story but with a crime at the end and a...Well a beginning that you have to find out in the final stages.
Every reveal is a moment where you literally go OHHHHHH in your head and every past twist puts a new perspective on the starting point of this story in which a mother observes her son kill a man..
I loved it. The writing is terrific as ever and Gillian McAllister has such a keen eye towards relatable engaging characters. Imagine if you could view with foresight, what would you see?
An intelligent, classically addictive novel which gets a huge thumbs up from this reader.
Wow, what a different story! Very original, I didn't see where it was going until the author wanted me to!
Trapped in time, Jen has to find a way to stop her son doing something unthinkable. But what secrets will she uncover? And is she ready to face them?
I loved this. Would highly recommend.
My true rating for this book book is 3.5 stars.
This is the story of Jen. One night in late October she is sat up waiting for her teenage son to come home, She goes outside and witnesses her son murder a man. The next day Jen finds that she has woken up the day before the murder From then on Jen keeps going back in time in order to prevent the murder happening.
I was so excited about reading this book as it combines two genres that I love, thriller and time travel. There were lots of twists and turns and quite a few characters to keep up with. I sometimes got mixed up between some of the male characters. I did really enjoy the story on the whole but I am used to faster paced thrillers.
Jen’s son has murdered someone and she doesn’t know how or why.
Suddenly she is catapulted back into the past, waking up further and further back each day, and she starts to understand the murder and the smoke, mirrors and betrayals that bring it close to home.
But who can Jen trust when only she can time travel and remember the future as well as the past?
This is a great novel - layer upon layer of intrigue as the story unravels.
I loved the characters, I loved the plot. It was a cracking read and a total original.
Highly recommended if you like a thriller that’s really different with loads of plot twists.
This was my initial reaction:
Tuesday 15th February. The day I finished the best thriller of my life, and the best book of my life.
Gillian McAllister I'm sat here STUNNED. #WrongPlaceWrongTime is simply OUTSTANDING and my mind had been blown into smithereens. I just want to go back and read it all again, which I will do when my signed copy arrives. I can't even explain my thoughts clearly, I'm in awe. You actually just made me cry with it's ingenuity.
Masterpiece is a deserved title and you deserve all the awards to go with it.
Now, a week later and I am still lost for words. I have been telling everyone about it, even total strangers.
The plot is seriously ambitious. Jen is a woman who witnesses her son Todd commit murder in the dead of night. But the next morning, she wakes up and it hasn't happened. I know, crazy right?!
So as she is putting it down to a really awful vivid dream, she wakes up the next day and it's the day before that! Honestly, how she has come up with this is beyond me.
But, I find a lot of exciting high-concept thrillers beyond my brain capacity and I just end up getting frustrated. This one, however, is executed to beautiful, thrilling perfection. As Jen goes further back and uncovers more and more clues about the murder, the readers are hand-held through it. Every clue is explained and analysed and at no point did I lose track of the story. Those twists were something else too. Mind-blowing.
The characters are so well-defined too.
I am trying so hard to articulate how superb this book is, but nothing I say can do it justice. My sister doesn't read thrillers but after me raving about it, she has agreed to read my signed copy when it arrives. If any book will introduce her to the brilliance of reading the thriller genres, it's this one.
Also shared to my Instagram and Facebook accounts Curling Up with a coffee and a kindle.
I appreciate the effort that must have gone into this book, keeping the plot straight amongst a shifting time span and various twists. For me personally though, I didn’t enjoy it. I found it tedious and struggled to suspend belief in order to get behind the plot. Thank you anyway to the publisher for allowing me access to the ARC.
I have read several books by Gillian McAllister and Wrong Place; Wrong time seems to be one of the best from the author that I have read.
The story involves Jen and her husband Kelly. They like any normal couple, and they have one teenager son Todd. When Jen one-night witnesses her son Todd committing murder of a total stranger. In instant lots go through Jen’s mind. Whom is this person? Why is my son killed him? Todd is taken into custody.
Jen wishes she could have prevented what had happened and goes to bed distraught. When she wakes up, instead of waking up to find out what is happening to her son until she realises that she has gone back in time instead of forwards. Can she find out what happened to Todd and prevent him of doing the inevitable?
The story also includes the story of Ryan a police officer that goes undercover.
Thank you, Penguin Michael Joseph, for a copy of Wrong Place, Wrong time. Wow this is a unique, well plotted thriller that goes back and forth in time. It was a bit strange to get your head around first but as the story developed, I really enjoyed Jen’s predicament to find out why her son killed and why and what is Kelly Hiding. This is also one of them books that you will keep asking yourself questions after. 5 stars from me.
Wow! What a genius of a book! Totally unique storyline and compelling read. Jen witnesses her lovely son Todd murder a man one evening but wakes up the next day and it's yesterday before it took place.
She then travels back in time to various dates which seem random at first but all play a part in her understanding of what led to her lovely boy becoming a murderer.
It's a crime novel looking for the start of the crime buried deep in the past and the story is told backwards!
This book is a complex, gripping page turner, keeping you hooked to the very last page. It begins with Jen and Kelly’s son, Todd, murdering a stranger outside their home. They go to the police station where Todd is charged with the brutal offence, and Jen returns home desperately wondering whether she could have changed anything.
Jen wakes in what she believes is the following morning, but is actually the day before the offence was committed. The unfolding drama is intense and gripping, exploring her confusion as the author skilfully describes events leading up to the crime.
Jen becomes caught up in a complex time warp, where each morning she is taken further back in time in her attempts to see where things began to go wrong, and discovers incredible secrets from the past. Characters are well drawn, and you become emotively engaged with them. and totally absorbed in this unique story. The author skilfully crafts such an implausible storyline, she makes you believe it is possible.
This is a high-octane, gripping page turner you will not be able to put down.

This is a really clever story. A bit hard to follow in places but well worth sticking with it. The plot was really well put together, I absolutely loved it.
Without a doubt, this is Gillian's best book yet. I was very skeptical about the pitch - I'm typically allergic to anything with a speculative twist - but this was so masterfully handled. I was completely shocked on multiple occasions, and the ending had me in an absolute flood. Brilliant writing, perfectly paced, the reveals expertly timed - I can't wait to see this fly.
I loved this book from start to finish. The story centres around a family whose son has just committed a murder. His mum some how ends in another time before the murder took place. Each time she goes back she tries to piece things together to try and prevent it happening in the present time. Can she break the cycle of what is about to happen.
Gillian McAllister is a pretty cool cucumber. I first discovered her on instagram where she has a significant presence now, updating followers on both her daily writing life and the walks she takes with her dog Wendy in the countryside near her home. She talks openly and often about how she left her job as a lawyer to be a full-time writer and outlines in detail how hard she worked to make this a reality. She’s the type of writer who absolutely loves writing - fitting it in to any spare moment she might have, working relentlessly to producing novel and novel. Bestseller after bestseller even! As sometime who spends hours, even days, procrastinating before finally getting into the zone to write, I’m naturally both very jealous and full of admiration.
Wrong Place, Wrong Time is the third book I’ve read by McAllister. The first was How to Disappear which was really good, a novel that combined family drama with crime thriller, with excellent research and a little artistic licence combining to explore the concept of witness protection in a compulsively readable way. I then picked one from her backlist The Evidence Against You, which I also enjoyed though admittedly quite as much as How to Disappear. Both books had a similar twisty-turny vibe and multi-faceted characters, particularly the female protagonists in each, but you could definitely see how McAllister’s consistent writing regimen is paying dividends in improving her work. Particularly in how daring and complex her ideas are becoming. Wrong Place, Wrong Time further proves this point as the concept is her most intriguing and experimental yet.
When Jen sees her son commit a murder right in front of their house, she’s understandably devastated and determined to help him in anyway she can. After a bad night’s sleep she wakes her to find her son back home, rather than at the police station. In fact it’s the day before, the crime hasn’t even happened and he has no idea what she’s talking about. The next day, she’s gone back another day in time. Confused, panicked and still in shock, Jen sets herself the task of discovering the root cause of what went wrong for her son. This, she hopes, will return her to the future and prevent the crime from ever happening.
It’s a fascinating premise, crime thriller melded with time-travel, neither Jen nor the reader ever quite sure where we’re heading or what the end result might be. As Jen travels back further in time, and faster, the concern arises as to not only whether she’ll be able to prevent the crime but also as to the possibility that her life will simply continue rewinding until she’s never even been born. And then what?
I really enjoyed the way McAllister spun the story out, allowing me to gather clues alongside Jen and attempt to slot it all into place while simultaneously trying to remember where on earth we were in the timeline and what events had yet to take place. At the start of the book I felt like I could see where the story was heading but within a few chapters I was completely at sea and unable to guess what might happen next - exactly how I like my thrillers! As always with one of McAllister’s novels, the final twists were
This unique, thrilling new novel stretches out in every way. It is lofty, tasty and intriguing but it also reaches both forwards and backwards. The themes of mother love, a desire to protect a child at all costs, change fate and to find out the truth you will be enthralled. Believe me you will be fascinated, fully engaged and charmed. You may feel blind sighted at first, but whatever you think initially, keep on reading and I can guarantee you will be so glad you read the book from beginning to end. The ending is absolutely stunning. Yes this is a genre-bender, but it is also clever and fulfilling. I feel very excited to tell you that this novel is unmissable. I will never forget it.
There are three main characters, each from the same family. Father Kelly is a self-employed painter and decorator. Mother Jen is a lawyer in her father’s private practice. Eighteen year old Todd is their son who is mad about science, clever, witty and loyal. They are a very happy family until one particular night. It is approaching Halloween and Kelly has brought home a pumpkin so that Jen can carve it and display it on the window ledge, as her usual tradition. She is waiting for Todd to come home within his curfew time. Then she sees him and an older man, a complete stranger, walking towards Todd. Next thing the man falls to the ground and she sees Todd holding a bloodstained monster of a knife. She cannot believe what has happened. Kelly runs with her to see if the man is dead, and indeed he is. This is the beginning of every parent’s worst nightmare. Their son is a murderer and is duly arrested and taken to the police station. Imagine that. A life lost and a beloved son with so much promise, so clever, handsome and happy. Now his life is ruined. There is no going back. The deed has been done, full stop.
Next morning when Jen wakes up and goes down stairs, standing there with not a care in the world, is Todd. He is home. She is astounded. He denies anything out of order happened the previous night. Then she discovers she is not in the next chronological day at all. It is yesterday again. She muses over the idea that she may find a way to change the outcome of what to her was last night. Little does she know that her first experience of going back in time will not be her last, far from it. Each morning she wakes up another day, or another week, or another year back in the past. She wonders if she changes one thing in their past, perhaps everything else will change and Todd will have the life he deserved. This is the beginning of a journey but she doesn’t know where and why. What she does know is that she will do anything to save her son. Is it even possible? This is the story of Jen and her family, and what a splendid journey it was. Would she ever come back?
I am awestruck by this novel. I have never read anything like it before. It is full of emotion, suspense, regret, tension, lies (yes, I have told lies too), thrills and spills and more. The characters are wisely crafted and developed with care. As a mother myself, I had bag loads of empathy for Jen. She was brave and intuitive, and she was the very essence of Tiger Mum. I urged her on never once predicting how she could handle this predicament. There were red herrings, blind alleyways, thrilling twists and turns as the journey in diverted in every possible direction. I am still left thinking about this story.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from publisher Penguin through my membership of NetGalley. These are my own honest opinions without any other influences. I drank it in, open to anything and everything that happened and as the story drew to an end I still had no idea how the novel would end would end. The final twist was actually stunning, inspired and sensational.
I’ve started writing this review multiple times then deleting and starting again. It’s safe to say I’m speechless! I’ve always enjoyed Gillian McAllisters novels, but somehow this feels like another level entirely. It’s such a great concept (won’t spoil it by saying much as I got such a shock!) but done really brilliantly ie, not over complicating it so that it no longer feels authentic but keeping it simple so that after a while it feels like the most normal thing in the world. The whole novel is so very compelling and I really cared about the three main characters, and it just came together BRILLIANTLY. I can’t rave about it enough.
If ever there were a genius book with a premise you wish you’d thought of, this is it!
It has a complex storyline and although at times it’s hard to keep up with it is just mind boggling how clever and perfectly creative it is. Some parts kind of fell into place then others I had to read parts again but it’s just absolutely mind blowing! I also think the character must have thought the same.
This story is one that takes time-travel to a new reality. It takes a story and gives it a unique twist. This isn’t just Groundhog Day, it’s Groundhog Day in reverse.
The layers of foreshadowing within the storyline was just exemplary. I’ve tried to figure out how the author wrote this. Did she write it as a forward timeline or is she just the extraordinary mastermind I’ve always thought? I’m going with the latter because with every book of hers I read I’m left in awe of her writing talents.
So bloody good. So riveting, it had me gripped right from the first chapter and I pretty much read it in one sitting except when I got up for a cup of tea because I forgot to eat.
Gillian McAllister is an author who takes an everyday dilemma or as a parent, your worst nightmare (and as a mother myself, this is it) and twists it so meritorious that it makes it so much more than the most unique book that you’ve previously read.
It’s just mind blowing how she wrote this. I’m honestly in awe of her writing talents. An absolutely fabulously written masterpiece.
Side note. Read the acknowledgements… they are another piece of the story.
5 + Stars
Wow, this book was literally mind-blowing. How on earth did this author even think up this amazing storyline. Her imagination knows no bounds in this unusual addictive time warp of a story that had me biting my nails down to the quick and left my mind in complete turmoil.
Jen is waiting for Todd her seventeen-year-old son to come home one night and while waiting she is horrified to see Todd argue and kill a complete stranger as she watches. All their lives are turned upside down at that moment. Todd is arrested, everyone is in shock, the whole night is a nightmare no parents ever want to experience. Jen tries to sleep but it doesn't come easy and when she awakes the next morning she realises that it is not the morning after the event but the morning before it happened.
I was and still am in awe of this authors creative writing. I felt so sorry for Todd who was once a happy go lucky teenager with a promising future in front of him. Jen is a fantastic character that loves her son with all her heart and is determined to find out what the hell is going on. Jens husband is a different matter, I wasn't sure about him at all. First I really liked him and then as the story progresses I had so many doubts about this deep and complicated man.
What I do know though, is this book is just phenomenal in every way possible and I don't even enjoy the time travel genre usually as I find them hard to follow, but Gillian Mc Allister made it so easy to follow these characters and the story she wove, reading became a pleasure.
With exceptional writing, a very creative structured plot with lots and lots of twists and turns that had me second-guessing every step of the way. Absolutely brilliant, this is a book you don't want to miss!!
You know when you feel a book will become the next one that everyone wants to copy -- the next I let you go, the next Gone Girl, the next Girl on a Train... this is that book. Wrong Place, Wrong Time will be a huge hit, deservedly so. Such a brilliant premise! Opening with her son apparently murdering a stranger in the street, Jen finds herself the next morning waking up the day before the event.... and an opportunity to stop it happening? Going back in time to uncover the clues - so cleverly done. Really original - and despite the apparent time travelling element - not once did I find it implausible or far fetched. Totally gripped from start to finish.
WOW.
I don't know where to start on this one. Ground and rule'breaking. I read this over two days. An immersive read that shows McAllister's huge talent. I enjoyed One Night. This is better. Added to the 'buy everything from this writer' shelf.
Well this book warrants at least 5 stars. I enjoyed every minute of it although I had to forget even far-fetched reality to follow the retrospective story and resolution.
This book fits nicely into my trilogy of 'time travel' books - Groundhog Day (assuming it is a book and not just a film) where time stands still on the same day, Before I Go To Sleep where time moves forward but the lead character retains no memory of what happened earlier and Wrong Place, Wrong Time where time goes back each reaching more than 20 years ago when Jen and Kelly first met.
There are good twists and surprises throughout and I did wonder how the book could be brought to a sensible conclusion. Suffice to say the ending chapters are very, very good and for once I did happen to guess Tom's Girlfriend earlier role.
So, a hard book to put down and well worth reading
