What a mind blowing, thrill a minute Wrong Place, Wrong Time turned out to be. Gillian McAllistair takes ‘groundhog day’ to a whole new level. I must admit when I first picked this book, I found it difficult to follow as it jumps about so much, but there is an excellent reason for this and as you learn more, it all makes perfect sense.
Jen faces every parent’s nightmare. Her son Todd commits murders a complete stranger. That night, she falls asleep in despair. Until she wakes and it is yesterday. Every morning after, she wakes a day earlier, another day before the murder. Another chance to stop it. Each day she lands on is significant to the crime. I loved this aspect of the book as it’s these tiny snippets that come together to create the bigger picture. If Jen can change the past, will it change the future outcome? Or is Todd’s future destined by fate alone?
The characters are well drawn, complex, and each has a distinctive voice. Anyone who's a mother will sympathise with Jen. Her maternal instincts kick in and she becomes one determined cookie as she travels back in time, looking for the answers that will stop Todd from killing a man. The author has come up with such an original concept, that’s written in such away she makes the implausible feel plausible and that’s a challenging feat for even the most skilled writer.
McAllistair is possibly the Queen of twists. I appreciated everyone. There’s nothing more satisfying that not seeing a twist coming until it hits you slap bang in the face! Masterfully told, each chapter urges the reader onwards, looking for answers that are slowly but deftly revealed. Wrong Place, Wrong Time is fiendishly clever and brilliantly original. The simmering menace and mystery kept me absolutely gripped. I have a feeling this book is going to be a HUGE hit with readers on its release in May 2022.
Can you stop a murder after it has happened? How would you feel if you saw your son stab someone. Jen goes to sleep that night but when she wakes up it is the day before and has a chance to stop it happening. Wow, just wow this book is amazing, i loved it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 enjoyable stars.
To be honest I thought this book started off quite slow and the early chapters where Jen was re-living recent days felt a bit repetitive.
However once the time went back a bit further and the twists and turns came about as the plot unfolded, I really enjoyed it more
Wow! Absolutely loved this! Read it in one day, totally compelling, brilliant!
I have read books before where the protagonist goes back in time and they have always been very hit and miss, too many errors or silly mistakes. Not this one. It was an absolute joy to read, though it did get my brain whirring at times, which is a good thing. Wonderfully mind blowing!
All the characters were excellent, so well written and the plot was, well, wow! Even at the end I didn’t know how it would work out, but it was just perfect. I am in awe of this author, class act!
Thank you NetGalley.
Honestly I have no words! She’s gonna think I’m some kinda fan girl with all my praise but seriously I cannot fault the woman 😂 loved this one again, the twists and turns and endless and the characters brilliant, loved the ending and everything about it, I can’t wait for her nect instalment….eeeeeek
*4.5 stars*
I remember reading Gillian McAllister’s debut novel “Everything But The Truth” and I said in my review that it could have come from a very experienced hand, and I can say with some delight that Ms McAllister has maintained that initial promise becoming one of my favourite authors. Her latest being no exception.
Jen witnesses her teenage son Todd murder a complete stranger - an older man. Todd’s victim has lost his life and so has Todd really - his promising future over before it’s begun. Jen is completely devastated, doesn’t know how she can go forward after this. The following morning, Jen finds herself not on the morning after the crime, but the morning BEFORE it happened! If she can go back in time, can she learn enough to prevent this crime from happening at all?
Well this was certainly different, and there were so many twists I don’t know if I’m on my head or my heels! What a cleverly structured plot. How on earth Ms McAllister kept track of this and made it all fit I do not know, but just like that exceptionally difficult jigsaw puzzle, it all fits perfectly in the end. Just like a magician, Ms McAllister was pointing her readers in one direction, when we should have been looking in another direction altogether!
I have read many novels by Gillian McAllister and this really lives up to the rest of her fabulous reads. I will be completely honest and say that the going back in time part, initially really put me off but I am so glad that I read this novel.
Its such a great thrilling ride and I really loved it. Jen is a loving mother with an 18 year old son, Jen is witness to an awful crime that he commits and his arrest. The next day she wakens to find that she has gone back in time and she has to try and stop her son from committing this awful crime. Wow this really blew me away, so far away from my normal reads and I literally enjoyed it so much.
Jen goes on a journey as to why her son would do this in the first place and the novel is so pacey, I barely kept up.
Fantastic story telling by the great Gillian McAllister and a must read of 2022.
Thanks to NetGalley, Gillian McAllister and the publishers for allowing me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review
WOW what a different kind of book, just couldn`t put it down stayed up half the night to finish it.
Jen saw her son murder a man on their doorstep when he returned home 1am, the next day she wakes up but its the day before the murder and every night she goes to sleep only to wake up further back.
Why is this happening to her, is it so she can change the past she has to find out and everyday she finds out something she had missed in her life.
The twists are enthralling just couldn`t get enough.
Very well written even with the story going backwards it just flows so easily.
Loved the characters and wanted things to go well for Jen her hubby and son
Would definitely recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book is perfection! A fine take on the “sliding doors” concept, showing the plight of a mother trying to stop her beloved child from killing a stranger. Kudos to the talented writer!
Wow! This is just pure genius! I loved the concept and it was so perfectly executed. I truly believe this book is going to be huge. As a Mum myself, I related to so many of Jen’s emotions. I spent time reflecting about how I would cope in Jen’s situation. I loved the twists and unlike so many other books, the were completely unpredictable. I’m completely in love with this book!
This book is fabulous! It was like being on a rollercoaster reading it, with all the twists & turns in the story.! I thought I had the story figured out a few times but I was totally wrong on all occasions! One of my favourite books of the year already! I think this book will be a huge bestseller as it totally deserves to be! This is a book that will keep you guessing & keep you reading! Sometimes you read a book & you think WOW & this is one of those books!
Wow! You have never read anything like this. I promise. I have read all of McAllister’s books but this one totally stands out from the rest.
It starts on the night a mother witnesses her son commit a murder. But the next day she wakes she finds that she has gone back in time. She soon realises that it’s her duty to find out the catalyst and put a stop to the murder ever happening.
She finds that she wakes up on different days over the past 20 years, going further back every time. Some jumps are months apart, some are years.
She remembers some of the events and can predict what will happen but can she make some subtle changes along the way that might alter the outcome?
There is even a dual narrative, so pay attention!
This is such a clever book. Having multiple characters appear in a reverse timeline must have taken some planning. Who has not yet met? Who knows who? What were people wearing in X year. It is all here in this story and told in a beautiful way, with the undertone of danger never far from your thoughts.
This is one book that I will be going back to read again, as there is so much detail in here. Make sure you add this to your wish list.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy.
Wowza, this is an absolute mindblower. I’ve been a fan of Gilly McAllister for several years but in my opinion this is the best yet. My advice, don’t read the blurb, go in blind for greater enjoyment. All I’m going to say is that on day zero just after midnight Jen is anxiously waiting for her son Todd to come home. She spots him and shortly after her world stops turning. What follows on takes Jen on a journey of discovery after discovery.
Right from the start the author pulls you into the storytelling with shock, horror, disbelief and tension being the tone set and maintained throughout. The concept of the novel is fantastic and very different from her previous novels, yet it’s also full of many clever twists and turns you don’t see coming which is one of her trademarks. It’s very well written, cleverly plotted, pitched perfectly so it just flows and in some ways it shouldn’t but it does, demonstrating real writing skill. Flow is an apt word as it is a go with the flow read and it does feel a bit weird to start with and you’re full of questions but somehow you just accept it conceptually and it comes to feel ‘natural’. I like the fact there are genre crossovers here and it works really well, deepening the mystery and sharpening the thrill element so much so you can’t put the book down. The central characters of Jen, son Todd and husband Kelly are very good and because you grow to like them so much (especially Todd) you go on an emotional journey with Jen as she beats herself up with maternal guilt but so much love for her son. The game at play is a dangerous one and it’s a rollercoaster ride as she makes some shocking discoveries in this voyage of second chances.
Well played Gilly McAllister, what a book and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if movie rights or a Netflix miniseries offers wing their way with this one. The best yet and an easy five stars.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Penguin Michael Joseph for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
Jen sits by the window waiting for her genius, happy go lucky,18 year old son to return from his night out.
As he approaches the house, a man emerges from the shadows and her son Todd stabs him fatally. What could drive him to murder?
The next morning, Jen awakes to find it is the day before the murder and she has the opportunity to change the outcome.
A cracking book by Gillian McAllister!
Gillian McAllister is an extraordinarily talented writer, and I have enjoyed all her previous thrillers. I was therefore elated to be granted an ARC of her latest novel, Wrong Place, Wrong Time. In a scene that has featured in countless other novels before it but is nevertheless so McAllister, literary protagonist witnesses a terrible stabbing incident from the safety of her home when she looks out of the window late one night, waiting for her son to come home. Unbelievably for Jen, the perpetrator of the knife attack is her own son Todd. Initially, Jen and her husband Kelly stay in the present and do everything they can to support their son whilst trying to make sense of events. Then however, Jen travels back in time. Can she change events for the better and prevent this crime, and other evil? The time travel elements, combined with McAllister’s usual allusions and twists and turns, make this a more challenging thriller than most, as all of your concentration is demanded to follow events. Readers willing to commit a high level of concentration to this book will, however, find they are rewarded with an impeccable mystery, and flawless writing. Thank you, Michael Joseph Publishers and NetGalley, for the ARC that enabled me to read this novel and produce this honest review.
When I first read the premise for this, I was skeptical but if any could pull it off it would be Gillian McAllister. A fantastic novel that's different to anything I've read before. It was very clever, very well-written and just a joy to read. Thank you for the advance copy.
If you go back in time to change something, what does it mean for the future?
It's hard to review this terrific book without giving away too much.
One normal evening, Jen witnesses something terrible in her family. But the next day she awakes to find it is the day before the event. And every subsequent day she awakes even further before. Can she find out what's going on and prevent what she knows is the outcome?
My favourite McAllister novel so far
Wow Wrong Place, Wrong Time is totally different to any thriller I’ve read yet and I really enjoyed it.
The concept was so unique and I liked how it was told backwards and delves into the past to unravel how a event occurred in the present. It’s definitely a book that I don’t want to say too much about as I don’t want to give away any spoilers!
I was not ready for the twist and turns this book took, I was truly shook!!It’s definitely a book that you have to take everything in and give your full attention to for sure.
I 100% recommend checking this book out when it is released on the 12th May.
I preordered it back in October so I can’t wait to add it to my bookshelf when it is released. I can’t wait to see the cover reveal!
Thank you so much to the Penguin Michael Joseph and Net Galley for giving me the opportunity to review Wrong Place, Wrong Time.
Super interesting concept but I was nervous going into it because ideas like this are so often executed poorly. I needn't have worried, this was done perfectly. It tells the story Jen who sees her son stab somebody and then wakes up having gone back in time to before the crime happened.
What unfurls is a twisty, suspenseful thriller that made me genuinely gasp more than one. There were some plot points I felt ridiculous for not seeing, some I never would have seen coming, and a couple I was excited to figure out. The pacing on this is fantastic, it felt a little slow and then gradually ramped up until I couldn't read it fast enough.
An exciting thriller and one that really kept me hooked to the last page.
Absolutely mind blowing! This book jas so many layers and so many intertwined aspects all running through it, forwards and backwards. It's really is just complete perfection and I was obsessed. To say there are "twists" doesn't even begin to describe the shock of some of the reveals. The main character is so relatable and experiences so many human emotions, she's not some superwoman or someone who's about to chase down criminals whilst battling an addiction problem, she's just a very normal mum dealing with all the worries and struggles that that brings with it. In ots most basic sense it's the question of how far would you go to protect your son and husband...... but it also goes to the other end of the spectrum and if you went back to your past, what would you change? What would you notice? How much for your life has passed you by without you even clocking the most important signs........ the pace keeps up from page 1 to the end, it's constantly moving forward and never bogged down with filler or with repetition. Ots just so far beyond the average thriller book that I cant even explain it. Absolutely captivating.
