Lighthearted, easy beach read, Loved Thrown, it was exactly what I needed to read at the time! I recommend it to those who enjoy easy and heartwarming novels,
Thrown by Sara Cox was a lovely, quick and heartwarming read this week. I was really intrigued by this one when I first heard about it as I really like Sara Cox’s radio and TV shows, mostly because of her sense of humour. Happily, there’s plenty of Cox’s personality in here, as well as some great characters you can really get behind.
Fans of pottery will love this one, as well as anyone who likes reading tales of the transformative power of female friendship. And though I found it to be a heartwarming, life-affirming read, it’s not at all fluffy (CW: domestic violence and baby loss).
With thanks to @coronetbooks for gifting me a digital copy to review.
I really wanted to like this book as I love Sara. I just struggled at the half way point to be honest. I felt it dragged. But I did love some of the characters which I felt she built up well… it was just about 100 pages longer than it needed to be.
I really enjoyed Thrown, the author's first novel centred around a community centre on an estate near Manchester, When the centre manager Becky organises a pottery class it's an opportunity for some of the estate's residents to build friendships and discover what's important in their lives.
This was an easy, uplifting and warm hearted read, it's a fairly formulaic plot but filled with characters I was rooting for.
Recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
I received an ARC of this book via netgalley and am grateful for the opportunity to read this debut novel. I liked the setting of the pottery class on Inventors estate and the hints of humour which peppered the narrative. The cast of characters was varied if a little one dimensional. The author has created a scenario of unease for most of the characters which engage the reader but those scenarios are solved a little too easily. I felt like it needed another, deeper level to the story telling. It is a good if not brilliant debut and I expect the author will be worth watching in the future.
Enjoyable read about 4 women forming wholesome friendships. Lots of laughs and warm moments. Easy quick read
Thrown by Sara Cox is a contemporary story about finding yourself. This book does need a trigger warning as there is a domestic abuse storyline.
This book did feel unfinished on that I was expecting a little more closure, but the storylines are on the verge of the next step, and we're just not being shown that.
It's a story of female friendships, wanting some more out of life and reaching for change.
It's a light read but felt lacking, such as the end as I've mentioned.
I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review, so my thanks to NetGalley and to Hodder & Stoughton
Anyone who has had a relationship with the wrong one can identify with Becky, a single mother struggling to bring her son up alone with no support.
When she decides to set a pottery class up it brings 4 totally different women together who would probably not have been friends otherwise.
It’s a heart warming story to watch their friendships blossom, a little bit of sleuthing discovering secrets and a budding romance. You can hear Sara’s voice in your head reading the story to you and it is written in her uninimitable style and with humour. I defy anyone to not want to give Becky a big hug after the reappearance of her ex.
I really like Sara Cox and was looking forward to reading this one from her. Really enjoyed it with her sharp tongue amd smart one liners
Set around a community centre and with multi POV with 4 women this book tells the story of the estate, the ladies and their problems.
I was so glad to get this book as I’ve always loved this author on the radio and once I had heard she had written a book I knew it was one that I’d like to read. The authors humour and warmth that I love on the radio has come through so well on the pages of this book. I can imagine living on a housing estate that this book is quite realistic - not really knowing your neighbours unless theirs a community event. I live rural so I don’t have neighbours as such! I loved the characters and how they all had issues that the others didn’t know about - definitely like real life as you just don’t know what someone else is going through by appearances. There was lots going on in this book and I did enjoy it.
The inhabitants of the Inventor's Housing Estate aren't exactly unfriendly to each other, but bar a friendly nod in the morning they don't mix much these days. Becky hopes to change this by rejuvenating the local community centre. The first step is a pottery class. Hesitantly, some of the residents join and soon find themselves shaping new friendships as well as lumps of clay.
I really wanted to like this but unfortunately it left me a bit disappointed. I love Sara Cox. She's witty and clever, so that's what I was expecting here. But instead, it was a rather basic story that reminded me of 90's "chick lit." The characters are good, and the setting is interesting, but the story is just too light. There are some odd literary flourishes that stand out quite awkwardly, and it ended, so suddenly, I wondered if the download had gone wrong. It's not terrible, but i just expected better.
I really enjoyed this lovely book be Sara Cox. It’s full of interesting characters and it’s rounded off nicely.
My thanks to the author, the publishers and Netgalley for the advance copy.
I really enjoyed this novel with its exploration of more serious themes alongside Sara Cox's characteristic warmth and humour. I recommend it!
A perfect read that I have been pulled into and unable to put down.
This is a gem to read and one that’s taken me on a rollercoaster.
Brilliant, loved this! Given that Sara Cox is clearly an avid booklover herself, I was intrigued to see how she would perform as a writer herself...I was suitably impressed...
Based around a relatively small number of characters, I loved how Sara wove an interesting story about each of them, they all had there own reasons for joining in with the pottery classes and it was wonderful how she wrote of their bonding process through a relatively uncommon pastime.
Sara wrote with passion about the building of friendships and new relationships, and how this branched into the local community.... A gentle, easy read, with a well thought out plot made this a great debut novel for Sara, I was suitably impressed, a cracking read!
I love Sarah Cox and really enjoyed this book as it was an easy but fun read. Sarah developed the characters well and I loved the fact they all came together in the community through their shared love of pottery.
Never judge as book by its author! No spoilers here, but a great book which I have to say I wasn’t expecting.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
Great book, fans of the Pottery Throw Down will love it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access this book in exchange for my honest feedback.
At the beginning nine of this novel I was not sure about the story or characters, fearing the description to be a little trite. However, I persevered and found myself willing the characters on in their trials and tribulations. It was in the end an enjoyable, heartwarming tale of kindness and community which is some solace in the times we are living in.
3.5
I weren’t too sure about this book initially. I found the style of writing not to my taste and quite cringey in parts. However, I soon overlooked that and I got swept away in a family type drama full of thrills, secrets and betrayals. I loved the vast range of characters and thought that the story was quite refreshing.
