Jodie Madison thought she’d found the perfect new beginning in the upscale, gated community of Kensington Grove. However, from her first steps inside the gates, she begins to doubt her choice. Her involvement with Lacey, a neighbor's daughter with cystic fibrosis, puts her at odds with Lacey's overprotective mother, Nora, who disapproves of Jodie’s presence in their lives.
The story promises a twisty, unsettling experience, but I struggled to connect with the characters, and the ending was particularly disappointing. It felt rushed and left me feeling unsatisfied after investing time in the narrative. Overall, a mixed experience with a three-star rating.
When a woman moves into a gated community, she starts to find secrets the residents are hiding, and they begin to wonder what her secrets may be. When there is a murder, people dig even deeper. This domestic thriller was fast-paced and exciting. I was able to guess the ending fairly early on, but I was still along for the ride.
Wow........ what a thrilling roller coaster of a read I enjoyed the twists and turns and the edge of your seat moments this was a fantastic thriller
Awesome thriller, kept me turning the pages and guessing what was going to happen next. I have since read Day's other books and she's on my auto-buy list now.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. Unfortunately since requesting the book, my reading tastes have changed and it would be unfair to review this book as I do not think I could give it the review that would be justified
The Girl Beyond the Gate by Becca Day is a quick, fun read about a woman who moves into a gated community, and begins to find life claustrophobic. She lives next door to a single Mom with a sick daughter. The way the houses are configured, some of the windows look directly into each other, and Jodie begins to see things next door that make her very uncomfortable. Could Norah be mistreating her ill daughter, Lacey, a sweet teen? As Jodie gets to know Lacey, and how controlling Norah is over her daughter, her questions turn to alarm.
I have a couple of friends that live in gated communities, and I thought this was a good setting. It is probably a love or hate thing. Some people like seeing the same people every day and being involved in activities with them on a regular basis. Others might find it suffocating. This made for an instantly. interesting feature of the story.
This book kept me turning the pages and was very readable. I enjoyed the story, and although I sort of knew what was coming, I enjoyed the journey there. Overall, I had a positive experience reading the book and would definitely read a book by this author again.
I had two things that made me give a lower score. This is a personal preference, but I don't like protagonists who have a drinking problem, when this is a major part of the story. Ever since The Girl On the Train, I just find that device a bit tiresome. Fortunately for me, although Jodie definitely turned to drink to help her forget things, it wasn't a huge part of the plot.
There were a lot of secrets and reveals in this book, and I really enjoyed that. The ending threw me for a loop, though. I guess the author did it to end on an unexpected note, but it made me rethink everything I thought I knew about the character. I just found it confusing, and then it was over. Literally, the last page. Some people probably like surprises. I guess I don't , so much.
But overall I really enjoyed this book. I would give it a 3.5, but I'll round up to 4.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Becca Day, and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley for the early copy of The Girl Beyond The Gate. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed the storyline and the characters in this book. I liked how the author wrote the story in a way that kept me wanting to read more because I had to know, what next? But the big reveal wasn't too overly done. I love a good story with neighbors who can't keep their noses out of everyone's business. Jodie was my favorite character and totally likeable. I definitely recommend this book.
Jodie Madison has just moved into Kensington Grove for a fresh start and where better than the exclusive gated community. The safest place to live ... or is it?
Jodie begins a friendship with her fourteen year old neighbour Lacey, who is terminally ill and in a wheelchair. Lacey's mother is overprotective of her daughter. She isolates Lacey from everyone and is suspicious of Jodie and her daughter's friendship.
When a murder shocks the neighbourhood, Jodie vows to save Lacey from her mother. The safest community suddenly becomes a dangerous place to live!!
I loved this book with its twists and and how all the neighbours had their own secret pasts.
I was totally gripped from the start all the way to the very end.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
An amazing book and a fantastic writer. I’ve been recommended this writer by a few people and she does not disappoint. The book draws you in immediately and does not let go. I read this on a rainy Saturday and looked up and had missed my favourite sporting event, such is it’s draw!
A very strong 5/5.
A good read that constantly keeps you guessing, with some good twists, especially at the end. I'm new to the author but I will definitely look out for more from them.
This book was too slow I felt and filled with a lot of information that wasn't really relevant. It just didn't flow properly for me at all. The story didn't grab me either.
Jodie Madison is ready for a fresh start and buys a home within the gates of Kensington Grove. She begins to take a shine to her fourteen-year-old neighbor Lacey. Lacey is terminally ill and confined to a wheelchair. Her mother Norah is very controlling and overprotective of her daughter. She isolates Lacey from everyone and is suspicious of Jodie and her daughter’s friendship. Even the internet is off limits. When a resident ends up dead, Jodie decides it’s time to take action, and save Lacey from her mother. Everyone has secrets in the Grove, and the place that was billed as the safest community suddenly becomes very dangerous. This was a wonderful ride def recommend.
A great read by this author. I definitely recommend checking this one out!
Thank you NetGalley for providing a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Another one that was not for me. I thought I would enjoy this from the description, but it was just silly and not up my ally. Super slow and not twisty enough
Really loved this twisty, tension-filled thriller! Was happy to have Becca on my podcast (#badasswriters) to talk about this debut thriller and her writing process, how she found her agent, her publishing experience, etc. Looking forward to more books by Becca!
4 stars. The Girl Beyond the Gate was overall an enjoyable read, although the ending could have been cleaned up a bit. Regardless, this is a book I will recommend.
Thank you to Becca Day, Embla Books, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review,
This isn’t my usual type of genre but it’s always good to give others a chance and I’m glad I did! A really enjoyable book that made me a bit tense at times. I’d love to read more by this author. Well done.
An amazing debut thriller with twists and turns I didn't see coming. Look forward to more from this author in the future!
A quick, great read that masterfully builds suspense and intrigue. tThe pace dipped a little in parts but overall would very much recommend.
I really liked this one. The twist was good and the reading was smooth. I really enjoyed the writing and I will be looking at other books from this author.
